Sigh...
Whenever I press my power button, I have to press it directly in the middle to get the screen to turn on. If I press the button towards the edge (left or right) the button just pushes down (becomes flush with the phone frame) and there is no click and the screen doesn't turn on. Not being picky, I just have to press the button more than 3-4 times and it feels loose.
Is anyone else's phone like this? Would help if someone could post a picture of the plastic tab underneath their power button. It feels like mine is broken.
I dunno about you but sometimes my power button won't even work. I have to take the case off, remove the battery, put it back in, then restart the phone to get it to work again. Kinda strange...
i was thinking i had the same issue earlier, then i just reseated the back and now all is well... now if i can get the rubberized black case from sprint i will be in full effect!
If you take the cover off, you will see that the button is a very small rubber and it lines up with the power button on the case, so you have to press it in the middle
So does this fix apply to power buttons that are really easily pressed too?

I've actually taken the case off and pressed the button to see if the phone would turn on. Yeah no go. It's like it locked up or something.
My evo 3d has a super sensitive power button.. it does not click at all. If I hold my phone in a land scape i accidentally turn it off if i even rub my finger over it. The design of the power button is terrible
I am exchanging this phone tomorrow hopefully I wont have any further issues

I got a case off eBay that has the power button recessed...paid $6 Also managed to get a 32 GB SD Card for $21
My mom's is super sensitive too and is pressed when holding in landscape, also has no click. Should she take it back or has anyone opened the back and fixed it?

Reason I really want to know is cause she got one and gave her ogevo to my sister and she misses her og. So I talked her into trading me her 3vo for my og.

My power button was driving ne crazy. I couldn't get it to work consistently when trying to turn the screen off, and I would sometimes get the reboot/power off confirmation box while using the phone, like the button was somehow being held down.
I found that if I pulled the top left corner of the back from the fully locked position just slightly, the button worked much better.
By this afternoon, I was tired of repositioning the back every time I took the phone out of my pocket. I went to a Sprint store, and they tried a new back. That didn't solve the problem, so they swapped my device for a new one. Problem is 100% better now. Feels great now and works perfectly.

I had the same problem with mine. Got it home from just buying it and couldn't turn it back on. Thought the battery was dead so plugged it in and presto, it came on with a decent charge still on it. Then I couldn't turn it off or put it into sleep mode. Took it back to the store 1 hour after buying it. RS exchanged it immediately, so no issue there. The new one had a definite click to the power switch where the first one had no click at all. Working great so fa.
Cool, I'm gonna get her to take it back before we switch then. Thanks guys

Is it just me or is the power button too flush to find and and too soft to press. I believe I will eventually get accustomed to its position which is a bit lower than on the GS2, but the rounded bezel and flushness seem to make it a bit hard to press sometimes. The volume rocker seems more click for some reason.

It's just you, you'll adjust to it eventually.
I had pretty much the same issue. Maybe a little worse. My power button had no "click" whatsoever. It would often get stuck in when I pressed it to shut the screen off and would then cause my phone to reboot over and over until I noticed.
This happened way more often than I would expect from a £500 phone, so I called Vodafone and explained the issue. They sent a person to deliver a brand new phone the next day and the power button on this one is much, much better. So if you think you could swing it as faulty hardware, which mine clearly was, then I'd recommend getting it replaced.
Is your power button much flusher than the volume rocker? Mine seems so.

I think it's just you.... ive played with over a dozen S3s and all the volume buttons are clickier than the power buttons.
I am having an issue with my top volume button, it seems a bit sticky.
My power mutton is crap also, no click at all. I have samsung's slim case ant it's very hard to press power button. I bought that phone only 4 days ago, so i don't want to send it to repair service, it takes usually about 2-4 weeks

You shouldn't need to send it away for warranty repair, the button seems faulty, I would get it replaced. I have similar issues with mine, the power button is spongy and creaks. I will receive a door to door replacement today. Don't sell yourself short mate
yh its too flush, some times i have to double check that if its working and ive pressed it. but i got used to it
my volume up button is very sticky, sometimes press and volume goes full blast when i dont want. kinda annoying, taken button out and cleaned but no difference . not sure if i should send back as im rooted :crying:

The volume up button broke on mine after 4 days. It stopped springing back up after pressing it. Vodafone swapped my handset, and so far so good.
It is a little worrying to see others having similar issues with their buttons - I assumed mine was an isolated incident.
I ordered an Xperia Z Ultra and received it in the mail yesterday. Unfortunately, the unit I received has a defective screen. When you press the power button, the screen backlight turns on but stays completely blank (black). Android is still running fine underneath -- pressing back/home/app softkeys gives haptic/audio feedback, pressing volume rocker gives volume up/down sounds, etc. However the screen stays completely blank and the device is unusable.
No matter how many times you press the power button, the screen still remains blank/black. The screen will only turn on correctly, randomly. On my unit, anywhere between 5 and 150 power button presses.
The screen also has a noticable yellow tinge.
Turning-off the phone first does not solve the problem. In fact, the screen is still blank when booting up (i.e.: the "Sony/Xperia" loading screen/boot animation).
Pressing the hard-off button next to the SIM card tray also does not solve the problem.
Pressing and holding Power+VolUp also does not solve the problem.
Factory-resetting via Settings also does not solve the problem.
Reflashing latest firmware from PC Companion or SUS also does not solve the problem. (Flashes correctly, but screen is still defective)
So just beware, for anyone getting a C6802. Either confirm in-person that you don't have a defective unit, or have your retailor confirm for you.
The unit I received:
- C6802 (3G-only), White
- Hong Kong, unbranded
- Manufature date: 13W29 (2013, Week 29)
- Firmware version: 14.1.B.0.471
Edit:
Other YouTubers similar/worse defect on their Xperia Z Ultra:
Both video upload by same person, it is ridiculous having two units and both is defective.
Lucky me and my friend + at least 30 users (report at Malaysia lowyat forum), our units running perfectly fine and no issue with great panel display, not as above video look that terrible and full with problem.
Got my C6802 on Friday and love it!
No screen problems at all here.

Seconded.
Good to hear you haven't had any problems. Hopefully this is a limited issue that won't affect a lot of units.
Unfortunately the RMA process for me will take some time, and my retailor just ran out of stock, so looks like I'll be waiting for some time before I can get a replacement.

Ordered from Expansys. As I'm in Japan, I ordered from their Japan division (based in Hong Kong), which is unfortunately under-staffed. Sadly, I'll have to pay additional shipping costs for the replacement, as well as paying import tax again for the replacement. Hopefully Expansys will be willing to help cover some of the extra cost, but so far I haven't heard back from them (because they're just under-staffed).

Did you have the same blank screen problem as in the video?
And can you explain the "hard reset button"?
I have tried soft-off (Power+VolUp, or OFF switch located next to SIM tray), software factory reset (Settings > Backup & Reset), and Sony PC Companion/Update Service (reflash factory firmware), and my device still has the same issue.
Thanks.

I think this is a software issue (there may be multiple root causes/symptoms).
Today my display would not turn on, but the phone appeared to be working OK- audio etc.
I hooked it up to ADB and saw many messages about inability to turn the dislay on.
Did a adb reboot command and all is well.
Didn't know about the reset switch - I think that would have worked also.
So I believe the phone gets into a state where the display will not turn on (and requires a reboot). Adb reboot is not practical. A hard reset may be, but I need to carry a reset tool with me.
Had the Ultra since last Thursday (so 5 days and 1 occurence). Not sure on root cause (I have a Pebble watch and it's battery also drained at the same time and the Ultra was in a state where it was not charging properly).
Will see if it happens again.

The phone auto restart when you take out your SIM card also.
Good to know - BTW taking out the SIM tray/card seems very difficult (at least for me) - any hints on how to do this quickly would be appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks for your input.
I think there are different problems that cause the same/similar symptom.
On my device, no matter if I reset (via Power+VolUp or reset button), or adb reboot, or factory reset, my screen still turns on blank, as I described in the first post. Even when turning on the phone, the Sony boot animation does not display -- only a blank screen.
FYI: You can also power-off the device by holding Power+VolUp until it vibrates 3 times (same as the reset switch next to the SIM tray).

Another correct way is press that red button near SIM card there.
Edited first post with a video of my device.
Note: received the phone yesterday on the 6th, no screen issues were present. It's a white unit.
Had this randomly start happening to me today while my phone was plugged into my car radio. The phone was laid flat. I hooked the phone up to the PC and reinstalled the latest firmware again and it seemed to clear it. I didn't have the issue on the prior firmware, but who knows.
Edit: still randomly happening and I can't recreate the issue. Screen goes off or I turn the screen off and it may or may not come back up blank on the first press. Upon startup the phone displays properly, the Sony logo and animation are visible. It just randomly produces a black screen when turning the screen back on. I think this is a software issue for me as it didn't happen until today and isn't consistent.
I received my Xperia Z Ultra this morning from Negri Electronics, which was shipped direct from Hong Kong, and it has the/similar screen issue. If the phone powers off for any reason, either by way of power management timeout or by pressing the power button, then it's dead. For me, no illuminated black screen and no OS sounds, just dead. I can reset via volume up + power or the side reset switch but yeah...
For what it's worth, the phone arrived in a retail Xperia box but the retail box was not wrapped in any kind of cellophane. I just lifted the lid off to a phone. Is that normal for Hong Kong packaging or did someone decide to sell a known defect as new retail?

Also, my version of the power off death is only when on battery. If the phone is charging, I can power it on and off no problem. Each time I do, I hear the audible power off click. However, if the phone is unplugged and running on battery, then most every time I power it off, I hear no audible click - just the screen goes black silently - and it's frozen/off. This is different than the original poster in that it seems his device is still running and the screen may be "on" but black. Mine, power off and it's completely dead until reset - but only on battery (regardless of battery level obviously). If its useful or relevant to anyone, I'm not using a sim at all. I have tried with a sim in, but it still exhibited the freeze behavior.
About 6 weeks ago the biometric scanner on my G5 started working intermittently, then after a week or so of this, it stopped working altogether and then it disappeared from security settings too!
Then next the power button stopped working in the OS, it works fine for turning the phone on, but once on the power button is completely unresponsive!
I'm trying to get LG to replace it but they are dragging their heels, I read something about a dud battery causing the issue possibly?
If anyone can offer some advice that would be awesome, I have already reset the phone back to factory settings and that didn't help.
Cheers!

I never had issues with the fingerprint scanner but I can relate to the power button issue. (E.g. not being able to reboot the phone or turn it off)
What ROM and version are you on?
I had the issues on MM stock.
On Nougat neither Stock nor custom gave me any issues with the power button.
In my case it seems to have been a software issue.
I'm on Nougat, so it's not that

I am experiencing the same issue. The fingerprint option had disappeared from the phone completely. I tried reset, hard reset the phone. Now the fingerprint option is back, and it won't record any fingerprint at all.
I ordered the part in attempt to replace the power button, aka fingerprint. Hope that should solve the the issue.

What a bad constructed phone.
Hope it helps you
Hi there just wanted to mention my experience from today. I bought a g5 with the power button not working but the fingerprint scanner did. I ordered a part from eBay and replaced it fine.
Then when I put it back together, it wouldn't turn on still. I took it apart about 3 times and tried to redo it until someone online mentioned to clean the gold pins with rubbing alcohol... Well I was getting ready to do that when I looked at the pins on the motherboard that makes contact with the power button part and.... A gold pin was missing. A drop or something must've made it fall out. I barely touched the one next to it and that one fell out. It had a hook that went to the underside of the metal thing and it popped out of my tweezers and I was never able to find the piece after that....
What a dumb design that they made. Those pins should not be there without being attached to the metal that's there.
Interesting I'll try cleaning the contacts first I was thinking it's strange that it's not working as you can still feel the button clicking when you press.
Just taken mine apart and cleaned the contacts with pure alcohol what did strike me was the pitting on the connections for the power button (see attached image) the pitting wasn't present on any of the other contacts in the back of the phone but the good news is it worked and my power button works again I'll update if it stops again anytime soon when I'll probably try ordering a new one as they're about £4 in the UK!
Intermittent button action all day today now not working ordered a new one will keep you updated!

I know it's been a long time, but mine did as well.
I found that it's just extremely touchy. You have to remove the back case to get good access to the entire button underneath and just press the button in various places/positions.
It may take awhile to find the position that'll trigger it.
You can find a replacement button at https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2510209.m570.l1313&_nkw=htc+amaze+power&_sacat=0
And to take the device apart: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/HTC+Amaze+Motherboard+Replacement/73022
or https://dereks-projects.blogspot.com/2013/02/diy-damaged-htc-amaze-4g-repair.html
I haven't done it yet, and may not considering 3G is going away and there is no LTE with it (funny, given "4G" in the name).
Given the "similar threads", it seems this is a common issue. Disappointing, but definitely better than LG or Moto issues. My old Nokia has been flawless other than using the very obsolete Symbian OS.
