Anyone else having physical problems with their Z2?
As of a few weeks ago, I've started noticing that the top right corner of the back panel of my Z2 popping up slightly (like 2mm to 3mm) several times a day and I would have to press it back down. The cover on the USB/SIM area will also mysteriously be open sometimes when I fish the phone out of my pocket even though it does still feel quite firmly closed once I put the cover back in place.
I went down to my local Sony service centre and they said that they will rectify the issues for me and might replace the "loose" flap too (also told me to avoid water since it's not waterproof with the back like that) - but it would take 7 working days and that I should call their helpline to check if there was any issue for me sending my set in as it has an unlocked BL.
Seems like the original Z had the same problem with the back cover - http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/08/0...ose-back-panels-water-resistance-compromised/ and the loose flaps issue isn't new either (but the rubber seals on mine look perfect).
Flash a stock kernel and relock your bootloader, few people actualy check these days for DRM keys however they do check rarely for your bootloader status
And your physical problems are totaly abnormal so try very hard to get a replacement

for the flap problem, easy easy fix. Get some silicone grease at your hardware store or wherever. Take a lil and moisturise the flaps' rubber, works like a charm. Seems like the seal just dries out.

I just tried it and it seems to make the flap come loose more easily. Looking at the flap, it seems to pop open because of insufficient friction between the seals and the socket for the flap...

I just applied this - http://www.wd40specialist.com/products/silicone-lubricant/) - thinly using a q-tip. No worries. Wasn't too expensive and it could be closed again once I cleaned it off. Tried a slightest touch of hair gel (I was desperate...LOL) and that didn't work too well either.
I guess I'll just try to relock the BL and feign ignorance and send it in for "hardware faults" even though the bored sounding helpdesk lady on the phone said that the warranty is voided.

Genuinely quite disappointed with the niggling faults that the phone has. Random freezes and self-reboots and WIFI issues on my Z2 and my dad's Z1 is making me lose confidence in Sony to deliver a solid all-round device. It's a really beautiful phone with a wonderful camera but compared to build quality and software stability my previous HTC M7 (converted to a GPE ROM) which was essentially bulletproof and could have months and months of uptime without a reboot...ugh.

For me, the flaps are good, and the back panel on the edges doesn't seem to pop up or to be misaligned with the edge, but on a light press on a few places it feels like the back panel is loose, and you can hear a small "tactile" feedback when pressed.
Should i get it checked or is it just a little hollow on these few places? For me that's the spot a little to the left and bottom of the SONY logo on the back, in height of the volume rocker.

I kinda semi-fixed the loose flaps by cleaning off the accumulated dust around the edges of the seal and the covered area...doesn't seem to fall out as often now.

I've received my new USB flap and the issue is fixed, the new flap is not loose. It was not due to the phone body as I feared but a premature wear of the flap...
Anyway, I don't recommend to open the flap but in exceptional circumstances. Transferring files wireless and charging phone with magnetic port should be the rule and recommended by Sony.

To be honest, it's just the hassle of having to wait a week (and having to go back to my HTC M7) or so for them to get it fixed. Plus my set might not be accepted by them as the BL is unlocked (towelroot came too late for me unfortunately )
I do intend to send it in for repairs (also dinged the flap a little, might as well get that swapped out too) some time soon as the loose back is really REALLY bugging me.
My god I have the same problem. Everytime I pull it out of my pocket the flap is out. Damn this phone was perfect . I cleaned soo ****ing well and the USB flap stays in more time but its still poping out.

So I just got a View, and for the most part it seems to be a well-crafted device. But, when I press on the front side of the plastic piece on the bottom (right above the charging port), it makes like a cracking noise, like the plastic doesn't fit right. Does anyone else have this? I'm trying to decide whether it's major enough to try to send in for warranty/RMA, especially since I took the OTA to HC and now want to HTC unlock to flash back and do S-Off for some rom action, which I think would void the warranty :-/
Mine is very solid, no cracking at all.
just got mine today and it does have that cracking noise ..
Hmm okay....well so far is 50/50 lol so maybe its common. I noticed that the plastic piece on the bottom can be slid forward and lifted off the charge port, and the noise seems to be coming from the gap between the screen border and the plastic piece over the charge port. So, maybe I'll try putting something in the gap to see if it stops. I feel stupid doing a warranty claim for something so trivial.
no cracking here, but i got something i do not like.
the screen is not fitted correctly on the lower side of the device.
It is not in line with the rest of the metal part, in fact is aprox 1 mm above it.
If you look at it you may not see it but if you swype your finger you can feel the edge of the glass.
But otherwise it is well built device.
I do not think i am going to try to replace it(or maybe i will).
That's ok. I almost ripped my bottom off looking for the sd card slot.

Also afflicted with the click. Kind of annoying bit of cheapness/shodiness on an otherwise very solid device. Wondering if a silicone cover would help mask it...
I have something similar but it was on the top camera cover. Where it wraps around directly under the power button it didnt seal right, and there was a gap that irritated me. After trying to fix it with no luck I ended up sending it back to amazon and bought another. New one perfect.
After a pint or two at the pub, the lighted buttons wiggle and wave at me. Should I return the unit, or stop drinking so much?
Hi there, it's only me or the cover for USB and HDMI (but the second one is less important) sucks? opening it's ok with my nail but get back in closed position is hard -.-, and I have the fear to break the small plastic connection :S tips? I'm thinking about remove them...
I have got a technique to do it, but it's hard to explain. I push the top of the cover inside first, then the bottom.

Exactly, it slides in at an angle, then click in the bottom.
I agree it looks flimsy; I had the same fear with the usb port cover on my X10 though, and it lasted well over 2 years of daily charging.
I am used to it now, it's still pointless though. My Nexus One had no cover and the USB port is still working fine after well over 2 years. I don't know why some manufacturers think a cover is necessary.

It's way prettier, obviously. I saw a picture on here with the cover removed, and it makes the design of the phone sink below sea level.
A flapless port only looks good on a phone with a metal or proper metal-color body. Like the Xperia P. But the Xperia S would look like crap without port flaps.

Yeah but that's because you are taking the flap off when it was designed with it on. Phones designed with a flush usb port and no flap look fine.
It's like saying cutting the roof off your SUV didn't look good. A convertible sports car looks ace.
I don't think the XS would look bad with no port flap. Look at the headphone socket, that's very nicely styled. If they'd done the same with USB I'd be happier.
My samsung tocco ultra had a similar style flap to the XS and lasted me 2 years just fine despite me thinking it would only last two days.
The galaxy s had a slide cover which mostly did the job but wasn't exactly pretty. The pins in micro usb are pretty fine wouldn't take much ingress to mess it up.
I think when the flap spare pieces are available online I will get one and make proper opening for USB for it and leave it there permanently.
Some smart manufacturer could make a delete with correct opening. They could have made it just like Xperia P and it would look very nice.
I was thinking about such same thing. Waiting for spare USB flap availability.
I wonder if a replacement flap could be worked into a clip on case?

Ace, works for me too. I'd been faffing something chronic til now with it but that's deffo the method.
Good to hear that other people have had previous, port-protected Sony's last a couple of years and more OK, especially with 2 year contracts almost being the norm these days. All told it's encouraging, therefore, to read that Sony seems to be some kinda master of the flaps.
Too much innuendo - fnar!
I find the flaps very sturdy so I don't mind if they are a bit of a learning experience. I pop the bottom part, then the top part and it works for me XD.
On my X10 it was easy to remove but it was pretty fragile, so I would rather have it the way it is now, then none at all .
Sent from my LT26i using XDA
i think, it's hard to say whether it is better to have those flaps or not to have them (like in the xperia arc). of course, it also depends on how often you use them.
because of wifi, usb is mostly only needed for flashing, but at least you have to oben the usb-flap once a day for charging
but at the end the phone looks better with them...
The flaps don't bother me that much, but what does bother me is how loose they become after you have opened them a few times. It makes it feel like there is a loose spot in the casing.
I just wanted to chip in here and say if you're worried about the flap, you are right to be. I left mine charging overnight and when I came to unplug it I noticed that the flap had a crack in both sides somehow - despite me being super careful with it. It's not broken - some kind of membrane within seems to be holding it together somehow - but it bends along the crack now and it's a matter of time before it snaps completely.
I don't like that flap design one bit... I thought the X10 had a bad flap design but this one is far worse, especially when you have the phone in a case. It's vulnerable when being charged, sticking out worryingly... hopefully spares will become available. I tried to glue it to reinforce it but it's not easy as the crack is only a hairline when sitting properly.
I don't like them, on mine it has become loose and doesn't latch in at the bottom properly anymore. It has also list it's matte black and is quite shiny now, as is also the 'chin' bit at the bottom under clear strip, there's a definite bit of wear under the back and home buttons. :-/ 3 months old :|

I sent mine to Texas after receiving RMA#. I've been waiting over 3 weeks to have it fixed. Tried to buy the cap but could not find it anywhere. I have only found port cover for Xperia phone Z but wasn't sure if they match those on the tablet. Anyway it is fixed now and recently I bought a cradle and it works great. I think it is a must to avoid damaging those covers. Pricey but I think it looks good, functions properly and it is great for watching movies, playing games and typing.
Bottom line send the tablet back to Sony and in the same time get a cradle and you will not have any issues with the tablet's waterproof tabs.

Thanks. I am sure the cradle is the best solution but not very practical when traveling and charging on the road on trains or air plains.
the cap must have a design flow if it breaks only after a couple of weeks.
Agreed. It was not the greatest engineering marvel. Cradle is in fact very thin and it fits the tablet very snug so I don't see any problem of taking it with me when I go. The threaded plug port with an o-ring would have been much better solution than that cheesy tab. But then again not many people would have bought a cradle. It is a good product but like most electronics it has its flows. My advice try not to open those tabs too often or better avoid opening them altogether. They will last forever. Bluetooth headphones, cradle, WiFi can easily facilitate it.

I would prefer that Sony replaced these, but they told me that when the tiny piece of plastic bends and breaks that it's considered physical damage. I find that odd that a main selling point is its resistance to damage but the part that protects from damage breaks off with normal use. I had to settle for replacement covers I found on ebay.

I had this situation that the cap got bend because I forgot to put it back after closing the tablet cover over it. I was able to bend it a bit the other side and also notice the little pin needed to be straighten so that it will fit back in place. This is when I notice the hole next to the usb to be used when the cap is open you insert the cap pin in it.

I don't know if that could work as a replacement part: something that looks like the current part, but with an extra rubber plug that would fit inside the mini usb port to hold it in place...
Seems like I now have a reason to get a 3D printer :S
**EDIT***
I remembered something I saw a few years back, is called Sugru, a moldable rubber that cures and can be used for almost anything. Search them out on Google.

well the problem with removing the back is that it is not waterproof any more when you put it back on

Btw are you talking a bout a video of replacing the cap or a video about dissabling the tablet ?
From what I've seen the tab cover has a "nipple" which can be squeezed and pushed through the hole (from the inside of the tablet). I don't think it is easily or even possible to do it from the outside. Besides I think the back panel acts like a gasket and seals the inside so I don't understand why would the tablet lose its waterproof capability. Do you have any bad experience?? Besides I don't see why could not you smear very fine silicon layer around the mating parts and make it 100% waterproof! Disassembly is here: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zczfTnBFqtA
Good luck and let us know how did you make out.

Hi guys,
I have been facing a problem with the falp on the left side of my xperia z2 (white, but has no gaps nor missaligns), which is that it keeps coming off. First it was ok, nothing moved, then, after opening and closing 4 times to connect to the PC it started coming off.
Now i only take it off to plug it tot he charger. infact, i bought and adapter so that i can use the wireless charging already.
The only solution I found was on a thread where someone said to put sillicone lube on it. This worries me, since i've put some (not to gross out people) "mouth moisture", AKA spit, on the rubber and it instantly makes the flap jump out of position, so i assume a lube will only make it worse.
I have contacted sony but if i send it to repais i will be without a phone for atleast 10 working days, and that is if i'm lucky....
This is a problem, since the phone is waterproof, or i would just cut off the damn thing
Does anyone have a solution for this?
thank you very much

Well, unfortunatly not mine... that was the forst thing I did when it stopped closing.
Amazingly now it is staying closed, has not self-opened for about 8 hours.
I guess it just gets posessed now and then...
I'd get that checked out, been using mine a lot since I got it a month ago and this has never happened, surely this will affect the water resistance.

Same with what Envious_Data said, cleaning out the dust from the flap and the "socket" where the silicone seal seats solved the problem for me.

Haven't have it pop open on me since then actually. However I do fully agree with you that it's totally unacceptable for a shiny new flagship device to have such flaws.
I got the damn same problem! It looks like is the dirt but it might be something else. I cleaned the flap pretty (really) well. I did it with a slightly weet (with alchol, be carefull)cotton swap. I had to do this two times to be sure its really clean. Its holding more time in its place now. I'll post if the flap pop out again by itself.

Sony do, either send it for repair or live with it.
Bear in mind if any home made repairs ie silicone gel worsen matters you may find Sony refuse to fix ot

Definitely its the flap. I bought one from here (they are original) http://www.witrigs.com/sony-xperia-z2-replacement-parts and finally after more than 40 days!! it arrived and now my z2 is 100% waterprof again! Im very happy now. The flap stays in his place!
I recomend you guys to buy this to solve the problem, at least it helped me.
In case you buy, I used swiss post, it take a long time but it was secure. This was the first time I buy someting from another country (Im from Mexico, btw sorry for my english hehe)
Remember, here is how to remove the flap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzXmsgNP2Eg&app=desktop
Hope this time I really helped! Good Luck!
PD: Now im going to use my magnetic charger so I dont have to move the flaps, I suggest you the same!**

Thanks, must be the flaps have been twisting too much and it was trying to twist back or something which made it push off.
Taking it off and putting back in fixed it 100% for me, just ordered a magnetic charger though. Dont wanna remove and put it back in every month.
Thanks so much for your post, I used a wall pin and de-dusted my flap and it no longer wants to keep opening.. It was quite surprising how much was actually there
Thanks again!
You could buy a new one from internet (ebay, amazon, etc) or clean it

Buying a replacement isn't so easy, well it is, but 99% are copies unless they have been pulled from old phones now. Most if not all the reviews condemn these replacements as poor quality and unfit for purpose. I have recently lost my micro USB cover and am waiting on delivery of a "copy" port replacement. Cost just under £5 for a pair of covers. Could of got some second user official ones for £7 but I thought I'd take the risk with the copies.
As for cleaning I just use ear buds/Q tips to collect the lint/dust.. anything sharp will only compromise the water proof nature of the seal.
I have had my Ultra Z since January. Zero problems, but this morning I removed my USB charger at work and a rubber gasket (see pic) fell out. Now the door does not close properly. I have the gasket and tried to work it back in but it would not go. There is a small tab and I cannot tell if it goes up (towards the screen) or down. I think I can get it back in with a toothpick or similar but want it to stay (and not lose it) and for it to re-seal the door properly. Not being able to close the USB door is a BIG deal to me.
I had been meaning to get a docking charger but bought some from China and they were crap. Guess I'll have to break down and get a real DK30.
The o-ring goes on the door.
Tab to back by the looks
Glue it back? What kind of glue?

Thanks Jammol. I'll try to figure this out. When I place it in the position it appears to belong in (now that I look closely I can see the small tab indention on the cap) but the part is so small I cannot even handle it with my big fat fingers, and don't really have a magnification station and stability setup to do it.
Big question is for the people who have had the cap break off, is there a source for the whole cap? Is it possible to install without taking the whole phone apart? Would it make sense to just throw it away and forget it was there?

I don't know what part of the world you are in but you can check these out. Couple folks have bought them:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Original-Son...zer_Ersatzteile_Werkzeuge&hash=item2339fdd95e
I say just replaced the entire cap with one of those and call it good. Mine is experiencing the same thing, tearing off little by little. I think that is where water might be getting into my phone, but I'll be replacing the phone soon anyways. Just not sure what to get yet.
I have not gotten mine wet yet other than rain in my pocket but the lines are much better with the cap on than removed, and I'd worry about the edge material getting pulled off the rest of the phone. I appreciate the ebay refrence and will try to find a US version. So is there a way to remove the old cap without breaking it off internally and having the tab rattling around inside?
I ordered a couple of the caps and a magnetic charger off thEbay US, but seller was in Spain so it will be a while. Crappy design trying to get rubber to adhere to plastic.
Does anyone know how to safely remove the old one? Just yank? slip something very thin in to try to get the tab to ride over the notch?
Thanks,
Marc
Super glue is what bonds o-rings to other materials because of the greasy slippery surface. Mine has also come loose. Contact glue, industrial glue or anything else wont bite on that thing because of its chemical resistance that the o-ring has.
try to get a hold of a bottle of Loctite 401 meanwhile if you can't wait for the parts
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOCTITE-401...Instant-Adhesive-Super-Glue-20g-/121407567300
to remove the old one just pull..just a bit harder ...its kind of some bend at the end of the flap that's holding the thing in place inside the device.
Apply with a pin or paper clip I take it?

mmm something like that I dunno really.. I've yet have to figure this out myself lol. Use your imagination!
At my moms work when I was young they had superglue bottles from loctite with really tiny metal pipes attached on them I wonder what loctite model that is. They could be used to do any precision work!
So it's possible to get the new one in properly once I get the old one out? From this picture it appears the new tab should slide in but I'm worried if you have to tug hard to get the old one out.

calm down...just pull on it. You won't break anything
edit: its no big deal to get the new one in
Great! Thanks, that's a relief. I'll let ya'll know how it goes when I get it. May buy a few extras too.
I got the replacement parts from thEbay tonight. Pulled on the old one and it came right out. Took 2-3 tries to get new one in. Tether was bunching up. Turns out if you hold it at about 45 regress it goes right in.
Thanks for the help everyone.

gutted!
I am so gutted i didn't see this thread before I sent my phone to Sony for warranty repair.
My gasket didn't fall off, it started to come unstuck so was hanging off and when closing the lid the gasket would unroll and the lid would open.
I sent it to Sony as I think this is there fault. The gasket should stay attached for the duration of the warranty.
They want to charge me £55 for repair, handling and shipping!! I have had my claim escalated and now they say 'upon further inspection the device is bent'!! They are willing to send it back free of charge should I not want to have it repaired...... But should I now expect the device they send back to me to bent when I know full well it was in near perfect condition when I sent to them?!?!
The bottom line is follow instructions from this thread. DO NOT send your phone to Sony.
Sony use 'authorised repair centres' so they don't even know what is going on with your device and the trust you put in Sony to give your device to a respected engineer is misplaced.
