I am currently running a 4.0.4 rom based off of the at&t official 4.0.4. I recently compared phones with my friends samsung galaxy note 2 also running 4.0.4 but the core samsung version, and i love their messaging appearance so much better. its the same, but the background is black, and their speech bubbles are blue and yellow. mine is white with blue and grey bubbles.
anyway to download this version for my messaging app? i am otherwise happy with the way my stock one works.
anyone got anything at all??

You should be able to change the appearance of the messaging app's speech bubbles and background, by going to the settings section in the messaging app and then under the display options section should be the options for changing background and speech bubble appearance.

What I would recommend doing is using ADB on your friends device and using the adb pull command pull the messaging application from his device to your computer, and then install it on your device. The command adb pull /system/app/AppName.apk should get you the app you want.

Handcent - Settings - Conversation list settings - Display contact pictures
You can set your own account picture and that of others.
Also, if you go to settings - Account - Handcent Themes, register and you should be able to download themes.
is it possible to increase the limit of 160 characters?
no, I don't think it is
A little thing but annoys me... When i get a notification from CNN for example the text is black and you cannot read it in the notification center... Is there a way to change the text color?
The system has global light and dark colors. If the app writer forces a specific color, like black, it can cause problems like that. If the app writer refers back to system colors, they will automatically present in a readable format. Unfortunately, in this case, its a poorly written app reference forcing black text, and your only choice to be able yo read it is to try a theme with a light color background in the notification shade. Serendipity 8 has a white background in there, so that would make it readable.
Long story short, no, you cannot change the text color.

I get the same problem with Facebook notifications

Pandora and Power AMP also do this. It really drives me nuts.

Hi all, when using stock email application and viewing the list of emails, it is black on white text. I'd like to reverse it to white on black text. Anyone have any idea how to do that?
My phone is rooted if that makes a difference.
hi can anyone help w/ this?
I'd really like to know this as well. I saw that you can change the background color for messaging and the GMail background is white but can you do the same thing for the stock email client?

I'm wondering the same thing. I know for a fact that it started off White background/Black text. But since rooting the device, this color scheme has reversed. I'd like to get it back.

I had this same problem just yesterday. My S3 email app has always been white background with black text until I rooted my phone and installed a custom rom a few days ago, my email app was then black background with white text, very aggravating.
There are a few things you can do first that many suggest but for me these did absolutely nothing. This was to first see if there were any settings in the email app itself (which there isn't), then to try inverting your colors somewhere in your android settings (not a solution obviousely), and last was unchecking the option under power saving mode settings that allows the phone to change background color to save battery which actually worked for some, but not for me.
:good: I did fixed the problem however and I think this may help those who tried everthing else above. The problem is simple and lies in a short CSC line of code.
If your phone is rooted and have superuser you can use a program like "ES File Explorer" with superuser permission to browse the files on your phone. Simply navagate to the root of your phone then go to "system" folder, then to "csc" folder, then open the "feature.xml" file using a text editor with superuser access. (ROOT/SYSTEM/CSC/feature.xml)
Down close to the bottom of text in the "feature.xml" file you will see this:
<!-- Email -->
<CscFeature_Email_UseFixedBgColorAsWhite>false
</CscFeature_Email_UseFixedBgColorAsWhite>
If this is the case you found out why your email app is black. Simply change the text "false" to "true". Save the file, and your done.
I actually closed my email app, cleared cache, cleared data, then I edited the text and saved. So I would recomend doing that first but you would have to re enter your email account info so it may work without clearing the data of your email app.
Hope this helps those who tried other means like changing settings.
Hello everyone.
I recently installed the CM10.1 on my galaxy s3. One thing that really annoys me is the fact that the messaging app (text messages) does not display the little bubble on top of the app to show that i have text messages. Is there a way to make it happen or am i missing something in the settings?
thanks!

There is a thread for CM10.1 discussion here.

try using a custom launcher like apex it allows you to set a default messaging app and various others and then have the notification bubbles there but yeah as the other guy said wrong section
Using the Samsung Messages app on my Verizon S9+, I am unable to permanently change the font size in the actual conversation screen. Yes, you can pinch to shrink and expand font size but that gets reset to standard size every time (unlike on the S7 Edge where it remembered your size preference).
Through Settings, you can globally adjust font size but the only Messages screen this affects is the main Conversation screen which shows all conversations. Once you click on a conversation, normal font size is presented. Frustrating for my old eyes...
UPDATE: Ironically, when you adjust Font Size in Settings, if you swipe the sample screen above the sliders, it shows you a sample Messages screen and the font size does change in the sample, but it does NOT change in the actual Messages app. Sounds like a bug to me as they are depicting what I want to do, just doesn't work.
I'd like to use the stock app as it has some features that are unique. There must be a way to change the font size so the setting is persistent, no?
Seeing the same also. Hard for my aging eyes to see.
And also finding it doesn't follow the global setting for size. Same as you.
Same issue. I don't think you can change the font size just for the Message app.
I when back to my beloved and trusted Textra SMS app.
It changes when you change the font size in display settings font.

As I mentioned in my post, this is not true. On my phone, changing the font size in display setting ONLY affects font size in the main Conversations view. Once you click on an actual conversation, the font size returns to the default tiny size.
You can get a newer version on apkmirror.com but it wont allow updating samsung apps for some reson. Anyone have the latest version of messages signed by samsung that will install?
They need ro bring back the S8 messaging app which has this inbuilt feature to adjust text. Wonder, why they ripped off that useful feature.

Hopefully Samsung will acknowledge this bug and release a new version of the app. Clearly the global Font Size Setting is supposed to do exactly this.
Same thing. Very frustrating

It's really not that hard to pinch zoom. Takes a half second. Sure, it'd be nice if it would stick but, c'mon man.
I had a problem with the Background colors in the Messaging ap - some of the themes I like to use are really awesome but when I get to the messaging ap, they used yellow fonts on a white background - nearly impossible to read. I either have to use a different messaging ap entirely (Mood is a pretty good one I found that has TONS of customization options) or just guess at what was written - or change themes.
It's dissapointing that I can't change the balloons or fonts in the messaging ap any more - would be nice if we could - and change font size too - so for now, I am using the MOOD messaging ap and while I prefer the Samsung Stock one better - Mood isn't bad at all.
Its not only internal Messages app, Viber and Hangouts has really small font in input line. Tried increasing font size, tried toying with DPI settings. No idea why its like that and only affecting text input lines, but hope some later update could fix that?
Hi Everyone..I just got the 9 plus and the messaging app is different than it used to be. It is just blue bubbles with white background. It wont let me change anything like before and the setting the background wallpaper for messages is no longer there....is that how everyone else's is?
I also switched to Textra for the all of the customization that it offers. It's a free download so I gave it a try and I've stuck with it since. Just my 2ยข

No, not "come on man". It should work as designed, and has worked since GSI-II.
I use Chomp. Let's you change all of the fonts and sizes, including the message notification pop-up.

I think you mean, "It should work the way I want it to work." It IS working as designed. It's just that you don't like the new design.
That's not to say that I don't agree that it would be better if we could choose a persistent font size. I do.
But we're talking about a split-second pinch out to increase the size.
A split-second.
So, yeah... C'mon.

Thousands of people having to take a split-second to adjust for a design bug every single time? No. You're missing the point.
