INTERESTED in Z2 please help - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there I'm really liking this device and I want to buy it but it read about this overheating camera issue, reviews don't mention anything about it but many people complain.. I do live in a hot County where temperatures are around 40 C in the summer! I don't mind if it's a problem with 4k only, but if the camera force-closes when just taking pictures then yes!
Please Help
Thanks

Honest answer, I live in Holland it is around 15 degrees Celsius and it shuts down on 4k and on ar video mode fast, and with pictures after 15 minutes or so.
Verstuurd vanaf mijn D6503 met Tapatalk

I've had Camera shutdown using 4K and Panorama Sweep feature.
The camera was ON for a whole of 5 to 6 minutes and while taking the panaroma shot, it shutdown.
Haven't tried 1080p recording.

It seems that it depends on what phone you get. If you get a lemon, you are scr***d and if you get a decent one, you should be fine.
I was afraid that this phone is plagued with this overheating problem and while it is one of the "hottest" I have ever had, mine is under control. I did not manage to overheat it with normal usage of camera/hd video, but surely enough I would be able to overheat it with AR mode or 4k video.
Anyway, If I lived in a climate like yours, I would definitely not buy this phone!

I live in the similar climate conditions as OP (at least for summer) and I've already purchased this phone. Guess I'm screwed :crying:

Will do! I get mine Thursday, so shoot me a pm over the weekend just in case I forget.

My batch is 14W17, so in theory it should be flawed with misaligned flash/camera (which it is a tiny bit) and overheating (which I have not experienced yet).
You are not screwed, don't worry, if you bought it and there is already 40 degrees outside.
You just have to remember a couple of things to keep it cool and you should be able to use the camera whenever necessary.
Do not leave it for too long in hot car or on the sun, do not use it extensively before going to the camera mode.
The last thing you can do is minimize the brightness of the screen when using camera (drawing more power from battery and putting even more heat).
You should be fine though!

Stop the batch madness already. There is no such thing as defect or perfect batch, some models have better build quality than others same as with any other manufacturer, batch has nothing to do with it.

[Q] Light Bleeding/Clouding in Screen

Take a Look please... Is it decent? Do you have the same amount of light bleeding/clouding?
(In the pics seems a bit worst than real life)
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7LQWVonPr4eS2VOZWRmQW9QcmM/
I have it on the bottom corners, but I can only see it through my phone's camera and when it is almost pitch black in the room. Otherwise, can't see a damn thing.

... And the brightness @ 100% , Also Its a bit visible when I watch a Movie (As you stated, In real life I only see the bleed in bottom corners)
But What can I do? Should I exchange it for a new one?

I think you should exchange indeed for a new one.
Just changing what I said to be more clear.
When I CAN see: 100% brightness, WHILE looking through my phone's camera
When I CAN'T see: Any other time.

Thanks. I will try to exchange the tablet but only If It comes in 1 week or less. Otherwise, I will keep the Tablet (There is not bleed when a hold it with one hand, Its solid, no sound cracks).
Anyway I have 11 months of warranty. Here is a better pic that shows what I see in "real life"
Bad news but I will fight until the end.
Sony only will replace the tablet If another company called Technologistics (the technical service) approves that.
I bought it in Falabella, but the 10 days for refund has passed away. So, I leaved the tablet in a Sony store. The sales man made the report and then send the device to Technologistics The device was there for almost 13 days!, BUT they ignored the problem even when they have the pictures that I posted here !! Their excuse, I mean, their report claims : "the device is working according with the manufacturer settings and we updated the android version in order to solve the screen flickering"
There is not ANY WORD about the fix for the backlight bleed!. Indeed, the tablet was working fine BUT it has a factory defect as me and the Sony sales man stated in the first report ...!! Damn.... I will call again to the technical service, and will try to find out what the **** were thinking those negligent guys. Even I will try to force them to change the report. While, at this moment, the tablet sits in the Sony store. But I'm not going to take it due this bad, very bad and negligent service.

[Q] Z2 vs HTC One M8

Hey,
I was consider to get the HTC One M8 but then I came across the Sony Xperia Z2. I was looking at the feature set of both. I went and got a feel of both the devices. My only real concern that came about would be the development aspect of the Z2. I love to tweak around with my phones.
The other issue that hit me is the speakers on the Z2. I havent had a chance to play with the Z2 in the sound department but I did have a chance with the HTC One M8. Does the speakers feel good to listen to?
Any thoughts would be helpful
Well opinion wise on the Z2 , the speakers arent perfect but thats because of the fact the phone is waterproof, everything else is amazing
Development has started slow for Z2 alike most xperias, give it a couple months for it too speed up, we already have official CM11 and TWRP, there should be more to come
And not to mention all mods for 4.4 will most likely work on other xperias
(this does disinclude kernels and roms)
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I have both devices i think that the M8 is better in design and the sound quality is better both speakers and earplugs wise.
The camera on the Z2 is waaaaaaayyy better then the M8 and i personally think that the system ui is better as well i am not a fan of sense it just to heavy.
And custom development always takes a tad longer on sony devices. I've had both devices and i'm still not sure which one is better .....:silly:
i have z2 and love it. Overall i feel m8 is great but z2 has a slight edge in all departments other than sound. Sound is awesome on z2 but m8 is better.

If you want a single device for all your needs go for Z2.
Want only a smartphone and have a separate professional camera? Go for M8.
Here's a comparison video :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKCgqeVdZ3w
Well as far as I see. The sony xperia has a pretty gud feature set. I know the development is a wee bit slow. But considering the fact, I think I just might go for the Z2.
I haven't got a chance to play with M8 but I have had M7 for 5 days before I decided to sell it and married Sony Z2.
Originally, I came from Apple 5s and to be honest the camera on HTC One M7 was horrible. I went out for a persimmon picking trip and I took my brandnew HTC M7 for photo shooting and I was shocked by the photo quality, blueish, dark, blrury and incorrect colour. Even my gf was shocked with my new toy's camera performance. Overall HTC was a good phone, sleek design, study and iron cold feeling, nice and sharp screen and beautiful UI. But after I sold my HTC M7 and bought the Sony Z2 and I must say it is one of the best phone I have even owned. Fast, beautiful scree large screen, simpe UI and super long lasting battery. I am a heavy user and apple 5s could not keep up with me as long as Sony Z2. Anyway, from Apply 5S -> HTC M7 -> Sony Z2, I am really happy to stay with Sony for a long time. And it is my first Sony device I have ever used since I was born ...lol
Hey all, I have the same dillema.
I have just sold my Note 3 and want something smaller and with a capable camera, very good sound quality on speakerphone while on skype and normal calls.
In the last aspect my previous HTC M7 was the best however it's camera was unacceptable, especially in very bright sun light...
To be honest I don't know why I am even considering the M8 because of the camera, but I guess I have the sentiment for the previous one.
Anyway, my biggest concern with Z2 is overheating. I went to Vodafone shop and turned on the Camera app to see how the phone behaves. Within 1-2 minutes it got noticably warm, just because the screen and app was on...
How widespread do you think the overheating problem is? Logically speaking, if something is sealed very well for water not getting in, than it must be not so great with heat dissapation... Unless it is made of aluminum...
I don't want a camera phone having a camera which I cannot use because of overheating...
Also, is it difficult to flash stock firmware over branded one, with sim lock present? Does the phone need to be unlocked?

The one you tried in vodafone store was probably on for whole day i.e., screen, speaker, demo... therefore it was already hot prior your camera shooting trial. I have no problem with my device. Trust me HTC M7 heat problem is a lot worse due to its metal case. Sony used combine materials including plastic, glass and aluminum therefore heat is not as bad as metal housing in general.
Worst case scenario, it is waterproof so just give it a shower, will help to reduce heat issue
Feels like I might just get the Z2. Ijust have the issue of the dev community for the device. Since its a new device, I have a feeling that the dev community will be strong but that we shall see.
Plus me getting the Z2 depends on my stupid carrier keeping it in stock xD. They released the device here and with 2 days all the carriers ran out of stock. So lets hope I get my hands one xD
I think I answered this question to myself...
Until Sony fixes the overheating problem (provided it can be addressed through software and it is not the hardware at fault), I will not get this phone.
I went to Vodafone Ireland store close by and put the phone to test. I started the camera app and launched 4k video and left it going, while I was playing with HTC M8 and Galaxy S5 (ugly phone and the same design all over again...)...
Well, after around 5 minutes I got the overheating message... Keep in mind when I started playing with the phone it was cold (no one playing with it, screen off)... The temperature now is around 20-22 idle.
Ok, I thought, It can be forgiven as I do not give a damn about 4k... So after it crashed and took me to the screen, I opened photo app again and managed to take 4 pictures before I got the message again and when the app force closed... After 10 seconds I did the same and the same story...
All I managed was to laugh out loud, while playing with the HTC camera and having its chasis still cold, and I just left the store...
Those temperatures cannot be good for any internals inside, especially the battery. I can bet Z2 users will have their batteries deteriorated significantly by the end of this year, if they use it as GPS nav, gaming devices or... Just as a camera...
RIDICULOUS... But I guess I will be tracking the forums and see if any of the firmwares fixes the problem, if not, I will wait patiently for Q3 phones this year as there is nothing that ticks my boxes at the moment.
Thanks.

Camera is set to shutdown at 65c cpu temp, which is nothing in todays technology. So no, it wont affect battery or something else. Also what do you expect, you make 4k recording, turn temperatures to hell and then take pictures, outcome clear to me. If you start by taking pictures that wont happen. And m8 is not a factor here, its probably imposible to make any smartphone overheat by taking 4mpixel photos lol.

No offence here but really you buy a smartphone just to shoot 4K?
So I just got my z2. YAY!!!!
Sad part is that I didn't get the noise cancelling ear buds. #WelcomeToTheMiddleEast
On the other hand. I just love the feel of the device. It just feels right. The aluminum and glass feel just perfect. It's feels a bit more premium than the M8 imo.
Problems. The device heats up. But tbh I live in a hot country so it really doesn't matter XD. The heat is more towards the top part and the device just heated up when I cranked the brightness high and started recording 4k video(Which I doubt I shall ever use in the near future)
Now all I got to do is get a case and a screen protector so that I don't destroy it in my rough daily use
Hope my short review helped anyone

Can you do a test for me, please?
Could you actively use the phone for a while (say 3g browsing or wifi) so that it becomes warm at the back, and once it gets warm, can you open the camera app and try to record 3-5 minute hd video or take at least 10 pictures in the row?
I am wondering if you get the warning message.
I just sold my M8 and ordered the Z2, I'm excited, I hope it was worth it!

Okay so I tried that. And nothing much happened. It just got a bit hot. like it wasnt that hot. Keep in mind I tried this indoors when the air-conditioning was on was thats something.
I live in a hot country where temperatures can reach 40+ Celsius or 100+ Fahrenheit but still I dont find the phone to be that hot. It does become hot ever so slightly but thats expected.
Hope I helped you out.

I was inclined to the M8 in the beginning but now I feel this device is better in terms of hardware as compared to Sony.
Development is real slow but thats expect from Sony devices. As far as stock goes, Its not bad but can definitely be improved. Sony actually did a really amazing job with the software.
Believe me you will love the Z2

That is the thing, the phone is not expected to get hot when doing not so really intensive tasks like browsing, downloading, or recording hd video/taking pictures... I had Galaxy S 1, 2, HTC One, Note 3, played with M8, Galaxy S5 and those phones only get "warm" when sat nav or comparable heavy task...
If your phone gets very warm at home with AC on, than what do you expect will happen when you try to use it outside at 35 degrees in your country?
Nothing like this would happen with any other competition's phone, seriously... It must be a design flaw, those problems were present with previous Z's as well if my memory serves me right.
No, I don't care about 4k video recording, I would survive this overheating problem if the phone overheated only in this case, but overheating when taking pictures after doing some light intensive tasks? Unacceptable...
I am pretty certain it can survive for a long time. The thing that gets hot is the glass not the metal frame. And when it's hot it's not hot as in u touch and u r gonna burn yourself.

Is your autofocus in normal camera mode(16 mp) rather slow?

Mine is. Even slower in low light no matter if the object is close or far the autofocus would lock-focus in and out couple times before it locks on the object and when the object is moving, it often miss and renders bad results. Is yours behaving the same?
Yep. Tried to take some pictures of my daughter on a swing the other day, most shots out of focus?! Had to revert to my wife's S7 to get pics as G5 just couldn't nail it. Also has a problem with manual focusing when trying to create a foreground bokeh. Took about 40 pics of my daughter sitting on the grass at a beautiful venue, held the phone low to the ground to create a slight foreground bokeh but with her in focus and the phone just couldn't do it. Every time the whole frame was out of focus, there was no obvious focal point used? In the end I gave up! Did a similar thing on my HTC 10 a few weeks ago and got stunning results, most people dont believe that i took pics on a phone.
Waiting for the next batch of phones to be announced over the coming week and will buy one of those or possibly new Nexus.

Dude. Buy from Amazon, they have 30 day refunds. I try all flagships this way. Never actually own a phone per say. Some I keep if they are particularly good and them sell to fund the next one.

Mine has been fine with both still and action shots. In fact I was very surprised at the quality over my Xperia Z2.

Camera lag Xperia Z5 Compact

Is it just me or does the Z5 compact have a very annoying lug right after taking a picture?
I mean, I can pre-focus on something, lock the focus, but after I press the botton (or touch the screen) to take the picture, it looks like the phone quicky focuses again or measures the exposure again (or whatever it does). The result is that I always miss the moment, especially with children pictures or things that move faster.
This lug sometime is very short, sometime is longer. I tried different camera apps, I tried the Sport Program (which indeed makes it a little bit better if you choose also 8Mpx resolution) but it does not change: the lug is always there.
I have a Z5 compact rooted, with 32.2.A.0.253 and Androplus kernel 3.10.84-v36 (and security patch April 2016, unbeliavable Sony!).
Reading online, I saw several complains about that, I am afraid I need to live with that or sell the phone. Anyone managed to solve it?

You should switch camera mode. Use different scenario, like children or sports. Or download timeshift burst and use that. Superior automatic is quite bad when you have to take quick photos

Thank you for the suggestion, but Timeshift burst can take pictures in low resolution only (max 1280x720px)

hey , have you tried to clear cache memory ? or use a third party apk to see if your lag is gone.. I don`t have this lag problem and i have 2 mounths with my z5c .. sorry for english !
Yes I tried what you wrote, it is even worse with 3rd party apk.
The lag is minimal but enough to loose the moment. Are you sure you do not have this problem? Have you tried to focus your finger and move it as soon as you click to take the picture? I can bet that your finger will be far away from the starting position in the picture, whatever settings you try in the app... Than do the same with another brand phone and the difference will be so clear and so annoying

It really does not work for me. It would be nice to have feedbacks also from some others Xperia phones about that.
Z1C to Z3C to Z5C user here. Sony stock camera have always lagged like hell. They supposedly finally "fixed" it with the X Performance, don't know if they're going to "fix" their older phones though.
I'm half hoping it has always been a pure software issue so that I might have the chance of getting a improved camera in a future update, but then again if that was the case then ****ing **** you Sony for not doing **** for so long, and "fixing" it only to sell the XP.

LG V30 Screen: Blacks too black problem ?

I was watching some movies last night and I noticed that the blacks would sometimes get way too black making stuff almost impossible to see. The grey areas seemed kinda pixelated and it looked odd and didn't seem right. Ill try to post pics later. I was watching in 0% brightness and turning up the brightness helped a little bit.
I looked it up and found Digital trends stated the very same thing in their review although it seemed only one of their devices had this. So I'm wondering if it's just a defect with my device possibly. Other than that my V30 has been absolutely amazing, I'm loving it.
Anyone else noticing this on their V30?

I was watching some movies last night and I noticed that the blacks would sometimes get way too black making stuff almost impossible to see. The grey areas seemed kinda pixelated and it looked odd and didn't seem right. Ill try to post pics later. I was watching in 0% brightness and turning up the brightness helped a little bit.
I looked it up and found Digital trends stated the very same thing in their review although it seemed only one of their devices had this. So I'm wondering if it's just a defect with my device possibly. Other than that my V30 has been absolutely amazing, I'm loving it.

Watch it. There's a few threads around here about this. A bridge dweller will reply to this staying that it's pretty much caused by the way you use your phone.
There's defects with these on some of the screens that people are encountering. Do you have any pics?
I'm thinking about picking one of these up. So am I to understand that it would look poor quality to watch a movie with the brightness set at 0%?
Geez louise ! You can't go by that !
Have you ripped the movie ? Is it Blu-Ray rip ? Constant or variable bitrate ? High Resolution ? Framerate ? 1080P 720i ? Is it on low class sd card ? Are you using standard stock player that has no codecs installed ? See there is million other things that can be wrong . Not your phone ! There is amateurs out there who rip movies and they don't know what they are doing and then you blame your new phone . Naaaah . Your phone is ok .

Sounds like the OLED display uniformity defect people have been experiencing. Some users notice it below 30%, others not until much lower brightness. Doesn't seem to affect all phones but it does affect a fair number of them. Not sure why the person above is acting as if this isn't a known problem.

Because there's a handful of them here that seem to pull whatever out of the sky to defend lg or something.

I have to agree, I was streaming recorded TV from my DVR, it isn't the best quality, it had the greatest amount of artifacts and problems I described. On higher quality video is was definitely less noticeable. Neflix HDR is doing something too, the blacks kinda turn orange. There are a lot of factors i need to take a look at.

Agreed. I mean, my V30 is arriving at UPS today and I'm excited, but I've been burned by LG on my last two phones so I will send it back immediately if I notice any issues and will be buying from Samsung with their $300 trade in deal. I can't deal with more LG defects and having them replaced multiple times haha I'm just done with exchanges of defective phones.
I understand you, I had my G2 replaced twice, my V10 3 times for boot loop and screen ghosting.
