[Q] Much Google related stuff disfunct - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone ever had this problem?
Google Play works, but no images load, neither screenshots, nor the app icons.
At the same time, the YouTube app starts throwing Network Errors and becomes absolutely useless (browser site working tho).
Hangouts and G+ can't log into your Google account.
Most curious thing? This problem disappears on 3G. Also, it gets away with time even on WiFi. But it appears quite often.
Does anyone have an explanation for this? Is this location related?
Sometimes it's really p***ing me off, especially when I flash a new ROM and I can't log into my G account...
I just want to know what the heck is going on...

Really, nobody had this problem? Is it only me?

I'm necrobumping this thread because I found the reason. I was recently installing Arch Linux and ran into the same problem. Not sure what's the ultimate reason for this, but it's because some Android versions set only your router as a primary DNS.
So just modify your DNS settings and use whatever nameservers you fancy, preferably the ones provided by your ISP, it won't happen again

Anyone else have a problem with Google maps constantly running

Its seems since the last ota ,every time i check my apps tab i see Google maps running, i close it out an 5 mins later it's there again , i have no other mapping software installed and only ran it once when i first got the tablet to see how my gps was working, i checked to see if some other app is calling it up, but for the life of me i couldn't see any of my installed apps needing it , i run a fairly lean system with maybe 12 apps installed beyond stock . Most of these being rss readers comic readers and a few various off line games and work tools , I'm not around wifi often so I'm a big fan of apps that store the data as opposed to just refreshing links. No Facebook apps or location check in style apps either, maybe my browser settings for searching local, but i would think that uses wifi info to establish that....
I've been using android since its inception but am a first time tablet owner barring a returned ipad 1 when those launched and a complete moron when compared to the level of knowledge displayed on this forum, so any ideas would be appreciated.
Tl;dr ver.
Read the thread title, any idea why constantly run? thnx

My guess is it has to do with location tracking, like if you gave google permission to use your location for whatever. I couldn't tell you how to disable it as it was an option that came up when first setting up the device...it also came up once when I signed into my google account on the google.com home page in the browser.
This is simply me guessing but I would try disabling anything that tracks your location and see if that helps. Maps is always running on my phone as well.

Google tracks location using the maps app on all devices with the Android market. The use it for delivering relevant ads and also for their traffic data. Remember, if something is free then you are the product.

Don't keep trying to close it. It will keep coming back automatically and you actually making the prime work a lil but harder by it having to relaunch it everytime. That will lead to faster battery drain. Just try cutting off Google locations in setting and see if that remedies it. Of not there's nothing you can do. If you try to disable it or get rid of it. It might cause issues with other apps.

Need advice to troubleshoot - DRM Download Manager data use

Hey guys I need some help not in resolving this but in finding a way to resolve it...as weird as that sounds.
I've searched on google and here in the forums and there doesn't appear to be any clear answer to the problem.
The problem is that last week, my battery was drained like crazy (no this is NOT a battery drain post!), so after going over the usual BBS stats and logs, I narrowed it down to Media / Download manager / DRM protected media (each app will report it differently). I also noted that my data plan got sucked up with more than 300MB downloaded. Since then it's happened twice more, downloading about 90MB each time.
Going into settings, data usage and disabling background data use for Google services will fix the data use but it doesn't address the problem.
A bit of background: I've been using custom ROMs for years, and finally settled on Slim ROM (which is based on CM10), running on a Galaxy Nexus, so an OTA is out of the question. Also, this is the first time this has ever happened. Ever.
What I need help with (I've also searched and found nothing yet that could help me):
I want to know what the hell is downloading and from where.
That's it. How can I do that? Is there a way to check active connections, bw used and where they're coming from? Some log? Some app that will monitor this for me and tell me where it's downloading all this crap from? I've tried to use disk usage apps to see if any directory is larger than 350MB but all I can see is my photos and music which has always been there, nothing new. Maybe one of the privacy apps that could scream at me something like "this app is trying to connect to this server here". I need details.
I could easily wipe the device and install OS again, but I feel I should really find out what the hell is going on before anything else.
Many thanks to all in advance,

Some URLS are blocked (no idea why)

I have a problem with one specific website - downloading/opening podcasts from the Dutch Radio 1 (e..g radiobox2.omroep.nl/rss/ug/programme/80.rss- I can't download any mp3 files there, e.g.. radiobox2.omroep.nl/broadcaststream/file/426393.mp3.
First I thought it was an issue with my podcast app but then it turned out that I can't download the above-mentioned mp3 file (nor the others files from this and other podcasts) at all. No matter which app I use, the website won't load.
It's not an issue with my Internet connection (same behavior on wi-fi and 3G, and a PC and another Android device work just fine, using the same wi-fi).
In one thread here I've read AdAway might be causing similar issues - but I disabled it and it didn't help.
The above-mentioned website is the only problematic one (or there might be more of them but that's the only one I've tried accessing). And yet that's one of the most important sites I'd like to use, which makes the whole thing pretty annoying.
I've got Samsung Galaxy S3 (rooted), running Android 4.3 (stock).
I'd appreciate your help in identifying the source of the problem.
Anything, anyone?
I know it seems like the most boring and irrelevant problem ever but the general question would be:
What my block specific URLs (or IPs, probably) on Android?
Any suggestions where to look for?
Problem solved: it was the Adaway app. That was my first thought (and there are reports of this happening on the Internet, too) but it wasn't enough to just disable blocking and turn it off - it took a couple of attempts (disabling, turning off, freezing the app, restarting my phone etc.). Now it works. Finally
Is there any way to edit the Adaway blocking list?

[Q] How to get rid of - adsmatte.com Adware

Hi,
Few days back, I start experiencing some Adware issues in my windows machine and windows phone. I have a blog which server Google Ads. Now, If I load my blog or any blogpost and then starts click randomly anywhere, it open a popup to ad.adsmatte.com/rot.aspx?and_some_parameters. I noticed that, I can experience the same problem in any website that servers Google Ads. I suspect this to be an Adware. But, I'm not sure how this creeps into my machine as well as in my windows phone. All the software that I use are genuine and no pirated copies are there in my machine.
But, the most surprising this I noticed is, my Windows Phone is also affected by the same problem. Since, IE in Windows Phone don't allow extensions and has proper sandboxing architecture, then how come IE in windows phone could be affected? I tried resetting my browser in both desktop as well as mobile, but didn't helped at all. Also, I launched the browser in InPrivate mode, which has the same problem too. . I even tried loading the same in FireFox (with AdBlock installed), but has the same problem.
I searched the internet for a solution and came across these 2 links - http://forums.androidcentral.com/moto-g-2014/528571-adware-redirects-most-websites.html, http://www.asus.com/zentalk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=8189. And, I'm surprised by the timing of these issue. Is this a new Adware out-break? Is spreads to all machines connected in the same router, if I got it right.
Is there any fix? How can I get rid of this?
All machines connected to my wifi have gotten Infected with this admatte.com . Condition of my phone is worse , I cannot open any site from any browser as I get instantly directed to this site. It does look like an outbreak , because it has been reported on internet since yesterday only and no solution is working. No anti virus is able to detect this adware. So we really need help.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Ad-matte
I am facing the same issue. It infected my PC, iphone and my android. I tried malwarebytes with no luck. The attack is so bad that I am unable to open any article in NDTV app. Did anyone find a solution?
adsmatte
All this started just a few days ago. And yes it infects all the devices connected to the same router. What i observed was if you just try the link ad.adsmatte.com it redirects to google ad services, i dont know what to make out of it though. I have been using adguard extension in chrome and havent faced the problem since the installation. I would recommen you guys to do the same.
enjoy this

best solution worked for me
Got this virus on Firefox days ago, I had tried many means to delete it but did not help. I followed the guides here
removebrowserhijacker.com/remove-ads-by-ad-adsmatte-com-pop-up-how-to-get-rid-of-ad-adsmatte-com-adware
, reset browser setting and remove add-ons, then restart. It did help something.
For Chrome go to Settings--> Advanced --> Do not Track
Start the Do not Track option. This works for chrome browser in android mobile phones
ad.adsmatte prob solved..
I have been searching the prob all over the internet but at last my own intellect got me the solution... Its simple solution for android phones ..just go to wifi menu.. Long press ur wifi id and select modify settings.. In there change DHCP to static Ip and fill in the details as per shown there already.. In DNS type 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and save it.. Its done..No more rubbish admatte ...Such a headache i ve been through for a month
wat prashu posted sounds dandy except that I WI settings on my android - but Save button I not highlighted, and no use anyway
practically, my internet on hone is disabled because of the redirector.
If anyone is having any problems with the advertisement.just move to the router settings and head off to LAN and unselected dns automatically.. Select the dns manually and enter Primary dns- 8.8.8.8 Secondary dns- 8.8.4.4

Chromebook Flip (C302CA) Can't Run Chrome!

I have a STRANGE issue going on that I'm hoping the XDA community can help with.
My Asus Chromebook Flip has been a tank since I got it (warranty ran out 3 weeks ago, of course). Out of the blue it suddenly started rebooting "randomly". After doing a Powerwash and a full OS image restore (from microSD) it was still doing it, but I noticed that it seemed to only do this after Chrome would get re-synced with all my extensions. After I had turned off all extensions and another restore I refused to load Chrome itself and instead watched Netflix via its app, played lots of Android games and then loaded Firefox and browsed that way. So far it's been rock solid again.
I looked over the logs in file:///var/logs/chrome and they are of little help (to me). They show several different errors including something called Gaia login issues, bluetooth issues, devices not existing, etc. Nothing to me is obvious from them. It seems like a corrupted Chrome. Asus is of little use as they want $60 for a diagnostic fee, can't tell me what it will cost to "repair" and will have the unit for at least 10 days. My fear would be they'd send me a bill for like $200 to repair and send me a crappy refurb that wil then fail the same way once I resync Chrome. (My flip is in a clear case and is pristine).
Has anyone seen this sort of thing before? The obvious course (again, to me) is to go into Chrome and turn on extensions one-by-one until I find, hopefully THE culprit assuming that is the cause. Hoping someone here may have gone through this and found the culprit or likely culprit before I begin this hunt, especially since all my extensions are also disabled on my desktop due to the sync. I have extensions for Forecast Fox, Dashlane, Google Calendar Plus, Honey, Color Picker, U-Block, Tampermonkey (to allow a script to check pop accounts more often... now that I type that this seems a good prospect) and others I'm forgetting now.
Thanks.
Logging as Guest or another (new) account works?

It seemed to, though I didn't spend much time doing Guest as there's a lot of limits on it (for example Netflix won't work as a Guest). I didn't try a new account because I don't really have one, though I could create one just for testing.
