I was using Blackbox. I installed it incorrectly. No root or safe strap. no stock recovery either, lots of force closes. Also the boot sound was inappropriate. So I tried downgrading back to 4.3 so I could get back to 4.4 and stay rooted. Something went wrong in the process. Now it won't boot. Now when I turn the phone on, it says i need to open up Kies. I can still get into download mode though Any ideas?
If you can get into download mode all you need to do is grab odin and a copy of the NC5 stock ROM and reload. I've had to do that twice for stupid mistakes I've made rooting and modifying 4.4.2. Don't forget to towelroot after you're done loading the ROM.
I used a pit file for an mk2 keep data downgrade. Also, for an AP file it says it needs to be an xml file. The nc5 file isn't xml.. Feels like I am missing something.
I'm not sure what I did to get to the state my phone was in. I am trying to keep the mk2 bootloader, but I am getting a fail when it tries to write the cache file.
You will probably have to do the wipe version since you will be coming from a different rom other than stock

I have been in a similar state. I can get back to stock using Gigilies full downgrade file but I can't use the full wipe or keep data wipe method. Odin fails at aboot.
You should be able to downgrade even if it says you need to use Kies. Pull the battery, do like you are going into download mode, it will still say you need kies but Odin will recognize your phone (you are in download mode as far as Odin knows). Flash Gigilies full downgrade file (if you used his method to upgrade. If you didn't it still might be worth a try) and you should be stock 4.3 You might have to flash his nc2 to mk2 boot tar file or his nc5 to mk2 boot tar file first. Try that if the full downgrade doesn't work.
I managed to downgrade back to 4.3, using surge's method. I rerooted 4.3 and updated using surge's method and got an error 7 on the phone, not odin. It boot looped after. So I downgraded back 4.3 (surge)

Try Gigilie's. You just flash one file to either upgrade or downgrade. Per his method you use Safestrap 3.72, install a 4.4.2 rom, boot into download mode via safestrap, flash his file via odin, and let it boot up into your rom. From there you can install 4.4.2 roms but need to flash the supersu file and a wifi module fix file after each install. You then can go back and forth from 4.3 to 4.4.2 by flashing a downgrade boot file or upgrade boot file. Might be worth a shot.
Error 7 appears to be caused by a rom that is not compatible with your phone. Almost like the upgrade didn't take. Not at all. You can, however, run 4.4.2 Roms via Gigilies method and be able to upgrade and downgrade to run either 4.3 or 4.4.2 Roms much as apparently you were doing before and without actually upgrading.
Nc2 seems to work better for me but do nc5 if you like

I'm talking about Gigilies method and I'm going by his comments that the nc2 method seems to work better. You can still run nc5 roms from it if I am not mistaken.

Once you install the me7 ota you cant go back to mdk. If you didnt protect root before installing via voodoo rootkeeper youre going to lose root as well. If you flash the me7 update through odin you should be good to go. This issue has been covered a dozen times or more. Some searching and browsing goes a long way.:thumbup:

Got a s4 today, followed the root guide here, using mdk pre release kernel. Did not unlock the boot loader. Loaded hyperdrive and after loading everything did the reboot. left me at the black samsung screen with an unlocked padlock and custom underneath. i can get into recovery and download. but no matter what i do will not progress screens (even tried full cache, dalvic, system, and data wipe and reloaded Hyperdrive. same results)
Should i re flash back to stock and try the entire process over again? if so, links please
also, what did i do to soft brick my phone? for future avoidance
and whats the difference between mdk and me7?
You probably got a bad download of the rom. Its a good idea to verify the md5 after its been downloaded. Once you can get a good download of the rom you dont need to odin back you can flash the rom in recovery and youll be good to go. The me7 ota is the newest firmware, has a few nice changes but it also has a non exploitable boot loader so you cant run a custom recovery on it.

To clarify, your suggesting re downloading rls8, and try flashing that. Then, if that doesn't work, re flash the stock kernel (basically go through the Odin root guide again?)

Redownload rls8 verify the md5 checksum to make sure its not another bad download and then flash. As long as you can get into custom recovery of your choice and the download is good theres no reaaon it shouldnt work.

Hopefully someone will. Same problem. Putting my phone back to stock rooted MDK works. The minute I try to flash Hyperdrive 8 and 8.1, it boots fine, then hangs on a restart.

and yet no one has yet been able to pinpoint what mistake i made in installing a rom i've used for 12 months (s3) and installing a new version on a new phone while following every instruction to the letter, suddenly ****s on me. so please, enlighten me, what mistake did i make?
You didn't make a mistake. Chances are, you just used the wrong recovery. I spent 7 hours last night trying to fix my phone. I factory reset this morning to the stock MDK and re-rooted and figured out how to use ADB to install the Clockwork Mod Recovery. It's difficult to get started and figure out how to install and use it, but there are resources out there that will help you figure it out. I reinstalled the new 8.1 Hyperdrive with CWM recovery and was delighted when the ROM actually rebooted without fuss. It did hang on the Custom unlock screen long enough to make me nervous though. Figure out ADB and add CWM. It will work.
Edit for your steps: Reinstall the stock MDK with Odin. Reroot as per the instructions in the MDK root thread. Instead of TWRP, use CWM Recovery (which isn't nearly as easy), then reinstall the latest Hyperdrive (or whatever you were trying to install).
I have been on the leak (nc2) rooted and wanted to go back to mk2 and get the nc5 update as I believe it would work for what I need without root. I keep getting an error 7 when trying to upgrade from the device and using the update.zip in recovery. MK2 is no longer rooted nor have a rooted it. Any Suggestions?

If you're back on unrooted MK2, and just want NC5 without root, have you tried just going into Settings, Hitting "About" and then using the on-phone update system (SDM) ?
Yeah it errors out during the installing system phase then reboots says it could not install

Mine is doing the same thing.
As you found it, it doesn't work. Surges method is only to get rooted NC2. I tried it numerous times as well.
Is there a way to get back to full stock firmware mk2 from nc2? I know there is surges method but with the baseband still being nc2 is that the sticking point? The full odin wipe doesnt work with it. What would be the process if its possible?

I posted the below earlier but figured id repost it here. Ive got this error a few times ans solved it everytime. Heres a short guide:
1. Flash the MK2 downgrade tar.md5 first (the one that contains boot.img, recovery.img, persdata.img.ext4, hidden.img.ext4, modem.bin and NON-HLOS.bin)
2. Then reboot into download mode immediately after and flash the MK2 system.img.ext4 tar.md5
3. Then last but not least flash the MK2 cache.img
ext4 tar.md5 and see if you still get the error. If you do, factory data reset then flash #1 from above followed by the cache.img.ext4 tar.md5 (#3)
You cant flash a a full-wipe or no-wipe Odin tar to go back. You have to use a custom made Odin tar. Also for people getting the status 7 error where /preload fails to mount after flashing cache the solution is to boot into stock recovery and factory data reset followed by flashing hidden.img.ext4 via Odin or Heimdall. Why?
consider how the hidden and preload partitions are related, and there's your answer

Breakdown:
Was rooted with twrp recover running jellywizmj9
Accidently installed ota 4.3 firmware and got stuck in a bootloop
I managed somehow to the other day to install the stock rom that was rooted but then attempted to unlock the bootloader so I could reinstall trwp and custom roms again. This is were things fell apart.
Prior to trying to unlock the bootloader I had the following on the phone (trying to recall exactly from memory) Android version 4.1.1 and baseband vraljb
Using odn3 v3.07
I have flashed the pit file successfully
I have flashed root66_vzw_stock_system.tar.md5 successfully
---- still locked on boot screen
VRALJB fails in sboot.in
And WAMC3 says its unsupported version
In my oden mode the screen says:
Product name: sch-i605
Custom binary downloads: no
Current binary: Samsung official
System status: custom
Know warranty void: 0
RP swrev: A2
I have tried removing the sim card and sd card resetting phone I think I tried it all.
Right now I will settle for a functioning phone. Rooted or unrooted, bootloader or not. I just want my phone functioning again.
ok here is a solution that i found on xda. since i downloaded 4.3 i screwed myself until someone comes up with an unlocker for bootloader. I had to install vzwemj9. the phone is now working and is rooted still.
With this being said with the phone being rooted is there any way outside of the bootloader to install custom roms?

If you used ODIN to restore to stock 4.3 MJ9, then I'm confused how you're still rooted. Did you root it with saferoot?

the only way that i can tell that i am rooted is that super user is installed. ok after further investigation the program is there but there is no SU binary installed. it says i manually need to reroot. can i use safestrap for that?

Yep. You should be able to root 4.3 MJ9 with saferoot. Here's the link to saferoot-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48392009. If you have data and apps leftover from before you restored, it sounds like everything might not have got wiped with the factory restore. Did you use Droidstyle's guide to restore? You might see if a factory reset from within the settings of the stock ROM would wipe everything.... and you could also try to do another Odin restore.

It sounds like you took the OTA update to the recent 4.3 VRUAND3 build, which doesn't work with saferoot. Others have had success using ODIN to revert back to 4.3 VRUEMJ9. You can use Droidstyle's guide to restore back to factory stock MJ9.... from there, you should be able to use saferoot on MJ9 to get root access.

it wirked i have saferoot and superSU installed on my phone. Stupid Verizon locking there bootloader.

I'll be testing this out... once I unbrick my phone Second time bricking it trying to get blackbox 3.2.3 to work.
Cannot get it installed. SE For Android will not change to "Permissive". It's stuck on "Enforcing"
what baseband are you using?
Just reporting in to say it's working for me, installed on stock Verizon nc5, have blackbox on rom slot 1.

Try deleting any previously granted ss root priviledges from the supersu app before installing. may help if you post a screen shot.

Never seen that before. There may be a better way but one option is to odin flash back to stock nc5 and start over.
I'm on the NG6 update which I'm assuming is the reason it won't install. When I was on nc5 the terminal emulator trick worked.

No. I used Odin to reinstall nc5 due to a brick problem. One too many experiments with my phone. Anyway, it was clean when it took the update.

If you are game i will send you a file to update to ng6 using the new safestrap. Ss should continue working after the update. But you will have to be back on stock nc5.

Assuming the answer is no to the above question can someone try the following and see if it allows you to update to NG6, Keep your root access, and allow you to continue to use ss v3.75 after the update:

**Prerequisite** This method requires that your NC5 system is 100% stock except for root and Safestrap. If you are not 100% stock please don't waste your time by attempting this method.
Here it is: I545_NC5_to_NG6_KeepRoot_OTA.zip
