DISCLAIMER:
1. I just got done perusing 10 pages of hits for "airplane mode" and everyone is trying to do something opposite of what I'm doing. So if there was a post long ago about this, I'm sorry I could not find it.
2. I'm not really that android-savvy. Just good at following instructions.
QUESTION:
How do I enable Airplane Mode "permanently" so that a child cannot disable this mode?
EXPLANATION:
I have several android devices (Droid Xs, specifically) that have clean ESNs and are not currently being used on any carrier. I also have children (5,3,1).
I've SBF'd, rooted, and removed all unnecessary APKs, leaving only a few educational apps and games for the children to use. And, yes, I enable Airplane Mode. They love having their own little "mini" tablets and being able to be like the grown-ups.
Unfortunately, the oldest has a knack for pushing all sorts of buttons and inadvertently turning the phone's radio back on. Now, I'm a bit worried (should I be?) that an inadvertent phone call or use of the carrier's data is going to cost me something.
Yes, I know that I have not associated the ESN with any carrier; however, as I'm sure most of you know, when you dial a number with a non-subscribed number, it still asks you if you want to make the call and charge it to a credit card - at least, this is what the phone did the last time this happened.
So, bottom line, I want to disable my child's access to any carrier's cellular and data networks. And I want to be the only one that could possible re-enable that access.
If there was some way to enable Airplane Mode "permanently" and remove access to all toggles, settings that could disable Airplane Mode, then this would ease my mind. Obviously, I would want this condition to exist only until I either reflashed the phone or had to do something very convoluted (perhaps editing some setting manually via command line or ADB?).
If there are other options, please let me know. I just need a solution to minimize the chance that my 5-year-old could inadvertantly access the carrier's networks.
Thanks in advance.
and they still should/will call 911 regardless of plan

I believe there is a guide out to remove items from the settings menu. It will take a bit of editting but its detailed! Then you can use any widget to reenable it. Or if you dont what that chance aswell pick a.launcher where you can disable widgets.

The apps that you can't remove, you can password lock. Slap a password on settings and the dialer and any other app you couldn't remove but don't want the kids in and don't give them the password. There are multiple apps available to do this, and I believe I saw one or two for free on GetJar. GetJar also has a lot of free games as part of their promotion, which may be good for your kids. It's a legit app store, no pirating or anything.
I believe that there's also a script to disable the cell radio. I don't know much more about it, but it may be something to look in to.

Thanks for all the responses:
@ltdanno360 - they will not be using the devices as phones. And essentially, my children have an adult with them 24/7. The adults just do not want to have to look over the child's shoulder 24/7 to see what app the child is running.
@tarends - ok, it'd be helpful to know where this guide exists; however, now I have something to search for.
@Bubble-be - it would be nice to disable the modem; unfortunately, Verizon Droid X do not have SIM cards... am I wrong?
@melvinchng - ok, I'll look into de-bloating those APKs too. I do recall reading something about that.
@plainjane - I'll look into those password apps and scripts.
Anyhow, I do have some direction now and will follow-up (eventually)...
Thanks again, everyone!

That script works great, I have used it for a while, but ever since android moved to the "fused location provider" that script/mod also disables the gps which I still want to function because I do sometimes take my son with me to play Ingress via wifi tethering to my device, and with that mod, Ingress can no longer get an accurate location. neither can google maps or earth.

Thanks for the reply, even though it's a few years later. I actually took a look at the script and it looks like it's perfect! However, since my original post, I've found an app that does everything I want it to do and then some:
Kids Place by kiddoware.
(Sorry, I'm prevented from posting links until my 10th post... I'll update the links later. For now, just Google it.)
It let's me selectively turn off the radio for apps. I can configure which apps they have access to and for how long. I can blacklist/whitelist websites. The feature list is impressive and practical. And it works on all three of my very old Droid X.
Hi, I'm new here, but I figure my question is as good as any other. I recently became proud owner of the Xperia Neo MT15, which is now rooted and thoroughly protected, but I noticed something about the GPS and Network Location that bothers me - each time I enable either one, it asks me to agree to anonymous data collection.. Well, I don't agree, and I see no reason why I should be denied the features, because of my belief. So my question is this - does anyone know which system apk controls this? I would really like to impose it some restrictions using Pdroid as to stop the data collection. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Nope. Not the culprit, since I don't even have it. I do however notice a lot of calls for Network Location from com.sonyericsson.learningclient(which sounds logical) and devicemonitor(which sounds just suspicious). They start actively operating as soon as I enable GPS. I've disabled the access to most things for both and set GPS and Network Location data to be served as random. I don't think there are any other moles.
It's weird, because they both sound so harmless, when I look at their descriptions in the list you linked to. Maybe there's something else. I'll see if I can find anything.
Sony has a particular feeling to collect data .
Soon you will discover also that the sony Gps will not works without data at all, because is affected by a bug, and it drops every 5 minutes if you don't have data enabled.

Holy... why did I ever buy a SE in the first place?! I love the brand, and I've loved every phone I've had/used (those include K750, K850, P1i). I'll try to see if I have the 5 min. bug.
EDIT: I'm not sure if i observed the behavior or not. I didn't go anywhere, but stayed on the window with the GPS and nav software on. The software never displayed a loss of connection. I did notice the GPS icon went to it's unfixed state twice for a split second, 5 minutes apart, but I guess I'm supposed to be on the move to notice the issue. All the while learningclient would call for GPS location and be fed random data. The wifi and data connections were both disabled. I'm going for a drive, I'll test and report back.

Hm, you don't have it? You deleted it? I just run a search trough my phone and found a lot of files with idd in their names. Some are even in etc/security and in system/lib there is even one in framework
there's even one folder data/idd who also have output folder. It stores some files in there but can't figure out what trigger loging.

I don't remember deleting IddAgent. The other two I track using PDroid. I just enable its notifications for everything and I watch what does what. learningagent seems very keen on getting GPS location, while it's on, and device monitor calls network location every once in a while, I see no good reason why.
If you are able to unlock your bootloader, and install a custom kernel like inteks, or nightelf ones (void guarantee), question about collecting data while you enable gps just dissapear. I dont know if there is a easier way.
If I wanted to throw away my warranty, I would have done it the day I bought it. I know a custom Rom would solve the issue, but I don't want to risk it with the warranty, not yet anyway.

Why don't you sign into the google play store, push mobile lookout to your tablet, and see if you can auto track it that way. I'm not sure if you have to setup the app first which would make this procedure pointless, but worth a shot.

Lookout sign in, and press INSTALL. Better hope it has an active WIFI signal else it won't install until it does.

You know, thats a very good idea, but i think you need to setup lookout on your prime the first time you install to set up tracking, last time i checked that is, I think that goes for all apps,
I think a developer would make killing if they managed to create an app that can do what you suggested
Edit: Never mind, thanks victorvasconcelos ^^^

Android Lost is another great app for this type of situation. You can push it to your Prime via tha Play store website and then use the Android Lost web interface to hide the app from your Lapp draweraking it harder to notice and uninstall.
Also from the Android Lost web interface you can force the device to take photos using either camera which will then be emailed to an address of your choice. It can also track the device via GPS and you can lock and password protect the device remotely. Of course all of this requires an active data connection, but it is pretty useful.

None of those will work if the person who nabbed it has wiped it or changed the google account on it.
I hope you get it back, but as one that left a palm pilot in a seat from a 13hr flight from Japan, I do not see good luck in your future for this.
Lookout won't work even if you install it through PC. You would still have to once downloaded run it and sign up/activate it all. There's no other way since you didn't prepare your tablet for the worse case scenario. Consider it gone

Lookout has an app called Plan B. Install it from the Play Store from your PC, and it will auto activate when it finally downloads. It will attempt to locate itself and send you the coordinates to your GMail account. Of course Wifi has to be active, and connected to a network, and the precision of the location is dependant on how good your GPS is, or how many WiFi networks it can see.
As for the Asus Device Locator, boot unlocker does not disable this, only a non-Asus Rom will. I am running a rooted .21 stock ROM on my unlocked Prime, and I can locate my device on the Asus site. If you have stock ROM and the device locater will not connect, its possible the WiFi is off and/or the Prime has no data connection to any Wifi network. The nice thing about the locator is that if it is found, you can activate the "ringer", which on the prime just makes it emit a loud sound. Handy if you are in the area of the device. I have not tested remote wipe nor lock device.
maybe a stupid question but.....
I don't think you mentioned this and this may be a stupid question but Have you gone to the airport or airline to see if someone turned it in to lost and found?

Possible, but lets assume that their an android noob for now, what i'd be concerned about is whether they have a charger or not, as you'll probably have to wait until they get round to charging it before you can do something, OP should take that into account if hes not getting a reply
Question, do you have a credit card saved on your playtore or anything, if so did you set up keylock?

Plan B was already linked on 1st page, as for Plan B I have personally tried it after READING it on the 1st page. My Prime is in a office GPS is on connected to our wifi and multiple wifi's around. Plan B installed but no e-mails after 10min so far. I think it relies too much on GPS for location, as it seems to be designed more for phones with cell coverage.
"After you install it, Plan B will start locating your phone using cell towers and GPS. On some phones, Plan B can switch GPS on automatically. Your location will keep updating for 10 minutes."
So you can try Plan B but don;t count on it as I am sitting next to my prime with Plan B on it and I have no idea where it is?
Also as I stated before if the gmail account has been removed or changed, you are not getting any software pushed from the play store onto your tablet.

I disagree, always prepare for the worst.
Forget the account begin removed, Tablet taken stuck in workers locker, driven home then turned on, Chance of an open wifi not good.
Plan B does not seem to work well on prime from my experience so far.
If the person who nabbed it is stupid enough to take it hook it up to their own home wifi and start messing with it before wiping it, they deserve to get caught.
I hope for the best, but I do not see it working out that easy. It would have been easier if it were a phone or if the software was on there from the start.
Good luck and keep us posted.
I would stick with Asus Device Locator as long as you were running a stock ROM. A wipe can't change the serial number. If the unit is off, has Wifi off, or is in an area with no wifi, none of these other apps are going to work anyway.
The sad news is that without Wifi, the Prime could never report is location even if a locator app was on it running.
The good thing about the asus devicetracker is that even if they remove your Google account or factory reset the device you can still track it.

Simply start the program. Thats it! If you don't have your phone nearby, you may remotely start the app by sending an SMS with the text "androidlost register" to your mobile.

I'm not familiar with MIUI but it's possible to create profiles with Tasker. It's capable of pretty much anything (activate data when a specific app opens, for example). Think I remember seeing someone do some stuff with MMS too. It can definitely be done.
Your phone IS only pulling data when needed. You and your phone just disagree on what constitutes a "need".
Are you on ICS or GB? Figure out what app is pulling the data. ICS data usage will show you, and let you disable the usage by app. GB will let you turn off background data in a blanket setting. On GB you can get an app like My Data Manager to see what app is using the data.
Juice Defender has settings too to disable data when your screen is off and such. But it's commonly believed to actually decrease battery life, especially the task killing aspect of it.
Sent from my Galaxy S II
Im on GB, ICS pissed me off to no end at the moment. Guess ill look into tasker.
Android devices are the only ones I've noticed to be unable to just idle properly on their own, but right now im in magical land of Japan where using Nokia is too problematic.
Hmm, good enough unless tasker will eat more battery than active data connection
Who bought this phone I mean? It looks like no one seems to care about this phone. Its all over youtube but, everyone seems to be doing the same thing, unboxing it. I was hoping I could get some attention to this phone so I can talk to others. Anyone plan on purchasing this phone? If so, tell me why, if not I also wanna know about that to.
Guess it is still early stage release for this phone, not many ppl got it. Youtube reviewer could get early shipped unit usually.
I got the phone but my mobile data doesn't work with telus and I can't change the apn. I need help. The only Sim I've been able to get work for Data is freedom mobile. I have reception just no data.
I bought an asus rog 5, red magic 6 and the lenovo legion 2 to compare them all since none of the reviewers ever talk about what I am interested in. No reviews I have seen have mentioned that the always on display is broken, or at least it is for me. You can turn it on, but it will only stay on for a few seconds and then it will turn itself off. Which reminds me, they also don't mention that the always on display on the red magic 6 doesnt show notifications. The only phone that has an always on display that works right is the rog 5. Also no matter what I do with the legion 2 it does not work reliably with notifications for anything other than sms. Sometimes notifications work, sometimes they don't. I've tested the legion 2 with tmobile and straight talk in the usa and 5g works with tmobile, so that is something that may be useful to know.

Wow, you bought all 3, thats awesome. The 3 you mentioned were the ones I was thinking about too, those and the ZTE Axon 30 Pro, because origianlly it was thought to have an under display camera and a 6.92" screen. Really, when it comes down to it, as long as its a flagship phone, whichever one has the bigger screen, thats who ill go with, hence why I bought the Legion Duel 2. Do you have the chinese rom or the global one? Mine is chinese. Of the three phones I wanted the red magic 6 to be the best because it feels the best when I hold it, but the battery life is terrible, the screen is dim and the software overall is not anywhere near the same league as the rog which easily has the best options and features. I am keeping the legion 2 though because I think it has potential with a few updates and it does have the biggest screen. Scrolling also is smoother even though the red magic 6 and rog 5 have all the same specs and either the same or better refresh rates. I use Firefox as a test to see how smooth a phone is when it comes to slowly scrolling. It is terrible on most phones for some reason, so if a phone scrolls smooth in Firefox then it is easily noticeable.

Ive got the Chinese rom but, I gotta be honest, im on the edge of switching back to my 12 Pro Max. I love the customization of android, and unless I start removing apps via ADB I dont think im going to keep the phone. I mean, iPhone has little to no customization but you expect that. When it comes to android, I expect to be able to make my phone the way I want and because of the way Lenovo has the rom set up, I cant seem to do much of anything. I cant fully run Nova Launcher, use Google contacts or Google phone. Lenovo locks everything down so much that it takes all the fun out of it. How do you feel about Legion UI?
I was able to install contacts and google phone with no problem once I installed the play store. Actually I wasn't able to receive calls until I installed google phone. I'm used to these kind of problems with using purely Chinese phones though so its just something I work around I suppose. I've read that the global rom can be flashed on this phone which would fix all of the google issues, but no one has actually tried it that I know of: https://www.getdroidtips.com/lenovo-legion-2-pro-firmware-flash-file/
If you want a proper phone though the Rog 5 with the global rom is the way to go. Everything just works and it is incredibly customizable.

That would be a thought, instead of just returning the phone. My only issue with that is it takes longer to get updates with the global rom. Do you have global running on your phone or are you using stock?
Also have a CN (legion 2 pro) 16/512, nice phone but killing issue is:
1) 4G, 5G (voice, volte) not working for incoming calls (the subscriber is not serviced IVR message for caller). Work only outgoing calls.
TELE2 Russia, using slow 3G for calls and data.
2) Google Pay always disappear from default payment method in Tap&Pay option.
Would like to try change CN to Global ROM but still no instruction and support of lenovo ignoring me (usual for lenovo, crap support).
I haven't installed the global rom, if you end up installing it let me know how it goes. There is so little information about this phone that I don't know if it is better or worse. It would at least have all the Google stuff though.

Anyway send me info in PM or just right there, wanna check it.

Which method did you use to install Google play services on you phone and what did you do to get Google contacts and phone to work for you?

I just installed the usual google stuff from the apkpure website. I install things in a certain order though, not sure if it makes a difference but I do google account manager, contacts, calendar then playstore. I use the playstore to install gmail, the google phone and google messages. I don't open anything until the playstore and then I just sign into the playstore and it seems to log everything else in that I use afterwards.

I don't sign into anything until installing the play store, when you open it you can't go any further without entering your information. I also manually gave permissions to everything in the phone settings and whitelisted things in the lenovo security app afterwards because this phone loves to deny permissions and kill apps in the background. I don't know if you've looked into the built in security app, but you have to set it up or it will kill apps automatically. It also can't be removed with ADB or you lose the ability to change permissions entirely. The stock launcher can't be removed either or you lose gestures.

I'm in Canada. Using telus only freedom works. I can Hotspot data from the phone because it has hotspot apn settings but not regular ones. Trying to root but I can't get fastboot to detect it.
