[Q] Wont charge after water damage - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Last week, I dropped my S4 into some water, fished it out, dried it out. It seemed to be alright, as far as usability. However, it wouldnt charge, it gave me the error that it couldn't charge because the cord wasnt recognized, the battery icon turned grey with a red X on it. I tried this with both cords that I have, both Samsung cords. I can plug it into my computer and after a few tries it will recognize it on USB mode, but not charge mode.
Yesterday, it charged, all the way using one of the cords I have, however, now it is back to the error. Now, I do have extra batteries and an external charger so Im not totally at a loss, but I would like to be able to plug it in at some point.
Any help is appreciated!!!

Water damage can be tricky, intermittent, and sometimes its effects can go away after a while.
For example, my girlfriend dropped her phone in a tub, the capacitive buttons stopped working for about a month, and then they started working again. Like 8 months later, they started going in and out, again, though.
If it's your only problem and you can get by with an external charger, more power to you. If it were me, I'd probably be looking on Ebay.

You could try the rice trick and put it in a ziplock bag and pour rice into it until its filled up then zip it shut and leave it there for 24 hours and see if that fixes it. Sounds stupid yeah but apparently it works.
Or try some of the other stuff from this: http://www.wikihow.com/Save-a-Wet-Cell-Phone

I've done this with my RAZR and it actually works very well. That phone went to the bottom of a pool and after a day in rice the thing actually worked just fine

Have you tried setting it on fire to burn all the water away?

I've only had my S4 for a few months! I was so mad when I dropped it in the water! If it dies, I can upgrade in November.

Dropped phone into water, weird battery issue

Hi,
So as the title say, my battery act very weird.
At first, it refused to charge through the charger. Took out battery and waited 10 min, then it charge, until 100%, unplug charger, and it still charging , never stop.
Took out battery again, waited 10 min, put it in, battery charging icon appear on screen with the little yellow triangle inside, cannot turn on phone. Then I plug charger in, now I can turn on the phone, but battery level now show 80% and notification : charging paused, voltage too high.
Could someone help me?
Thanks
P/s: It was happened last night, leave it over night and I can use the phone normally this morning though.

Oh. Good. Lord.
10 min is NOT ENOUGH TIME to let the thing dry after you dropped the whole thing into water. You probably screwed the pooch on this one.
If the phone is dropped in water, most people recommend taking the phone apart and putting all pieces into a bag full of uncooked rice and silica packages for at least a few (preferably up to 5) DAYS before attempting to reconnect battery.
Because you've reattached battery already after less than 1 hour TWICE, I'm betting you have shorted your mainboard beyond all repair.
Water + electronics isn't necessarily the kill factor. Water + electronics + electrical current (connected battery) BEFORE DRY = dead electronics.
You should leave the battery out of the SGS and put both in a bag with much rice or cat litter some days in a bag. No hair dryer or something like this.
It wasn't a good idea to connect the loader and to leave the battery in the mobile.
I have a friend with exactly the same problem, his daughter put the GS2 phone into water and then he put the battery out for ONE night only... now the phone says is charging when it's unplugged and sometimes the "car mode" activates by his own (i don't even know how to activate the car mode on my GS2) ....
we started to think that the problem will stay forever

And now that the battery was put back into the phone after only one night, it probably will.

You got lucky if yours isn't showing any ill effects after such a short dry time. Yours is an exception.

Well, i did have the same selfactivates problem like you for few min,It even turn it on after i put the battery in, without any action. But it gone now. The problem is that it keep saying charging and the notification keep pop up. I can overcome it by install AOKP or CM9 Rom which dont have that kind of notification. But still, my concern is how long can it take till it really dead?...

Start looking for a new phone now.
If you already shorted it, it's not going to go away. Electronics don't just heal themselves over time.
A repair shop may be able to replace parts with shorted components, but if many have shorts, it may not be worth it to fix, and may end up being more expensive to fix than to replace.
You should have left the phone to dry atleast for a solid 24 hours in a rice bag!
I put my old Sony Ericsson in the washing machine once (was in a pair of shorts) lol.
Of course I don't expect it to work... but I opened it up and took out battery etc... left it out to dry in the sun for few minutes (making sure it doesn't get too hot), then put in a nice dry place with dehumidifier. After a couple of days it worked again.
Now that is just lucky and it probably wouldn't last for long... but luckily I was going to buy a new phone at the time anyways.
Moral of the story... phones, or any electronics, are not waterproof unless stated that they are. You have to be more careful people... or get something like Invisible Shield.
do you think that the problem will go away if I got a new battery ??

How can you be confused about this? The issue is a short on one of the electronic components in the phone. Probably the mainboard. Getting a new battery won't address that.
Why not bring it in to some service center (or even some night market telephone tech guys) and have them check it out? Then they can tell you what needs replacing or if you're better off getting a new phone.

[Q] Phone got wet, help please!

so my phone got wet.. probably something was spilled over it or something...
anyway it shut down immediately (obvious)
i've opened the battery and pulled it out and i had water there.. i've dried it with a napkin as best as i could and power it on.. id didnt work
i've tried to plug it in the charger (probably shouldnt but was in panic heh) and i got the boot logo and the battery showed 5 precent.. i've waited a couple of minutes and it went up and up.. then i booted the phone... everything worked fine.. thought it was over and all was good.
then after 30 minutes or so i've unpluged the phone and after maybe 5 minutes it shut down (battery showed like 30 precent)
anyway.. i've then dried it some more with a hair drier but still the phone didnt boot
every time i connect the charger it shows 5% but doesnt move from it.. always on 5%..
When plugged in i can try to boot up but i see the M logo and after a few seconds it shuts down, nothing happens
I also can enter recovery or RSD or all the things...
What can i do?? is that the battery thats faulty? or the phone is gone? what can i try??
Well you have probably ended up frying something by turning it on while it was wet. I think you should let it dry out completely and then try to boot it up. If it still doesn't boot its a goner.
Google ways how to dry it. One way is to put it in a bag of rice for 2 days.

Towards the right of the SIM card, there is a whole in the plastic that has a moisture indicator spot, if that is white, then things are goodish, but if it is red??? then you may be in bad shape. Also, on the underside of the battery, there is another indicator, it should be mostly white with red + all over it, however if it is all red??? then the batter may be a goner. However, electronics these days are protected from some type of moisture, so it may just be still wet on the inside and may just need to be dried up.
To dry up electronics, as mentioned, a bag of dry rice is a great moisture sucker. Otherwise if you have an abundance of silica gel packets laying around, you can toss the phone into a container with those and let them sit for a few days.
However, you did you a hair drier, to that I say good luck. That kind of direct intense heat is horrible for most electronics, there is a very good chance you have destroyed some other internal component, and you probably won't be using your ATRIX any longer.
The issues you are running into are hardware related and the fact you can power on the phone at all surprises me. If you have a warranty plan that supports water damage, you can try reaching out to them and see what they want to do to help you, but considering you blasted a hair dryer at it, I would be very surprised.
take the battery, sim, sdcard, etc out and put in dry rice.
You plugged it into the charger, so game over imo. Whether it turns on or not you have damaged it. Better to cut your losses and look for a new phone. Done it myself.

Thanks for the replies.. An update for the situation..
I've waited more for the phone to dry and rest and then my girlfriend (her phone actually) started to mess with it and somehow turned it on and it actually works now.
The spot near the sim is white but the spot on the battery is totally red..
Now the strange thing is that the phone indicator shows that there is 5 percent left but when I looked at the battery voltage it showed 4196.. In the morning I checked the voltage and it was 4100 and the indicator showed 1%..
What's up with that??
Is the battery ruined? Or something else? Im going to buy a new one anyway but still...
Using neutrino 2.7 EE
You may have got lucky and just ruined the battery. Watch for corrosion on the connectors in the phone for battery, sim, and sdcard. That may be the next problem if a new battery works out.

[Q] S2 thinks it is charging all the time

I had a minor incident the other night, whereby the (USB) end of my power charger got water on it. I dried it off instantly as best as I could. The phone itself has not come into contact with any water.
It still charged the phone fine... however after removing the charger at 100% the phone continued to say charging. I turned it off and removed the battery for some time. Upon putting the battery back in, the display showed the charging animation again even though it wasn't plugged in. At this point it wouldn't even turn on.
After multiple attempts I managed to get it switched on. But even now, 2 days later after a couple more charges, it still says it is charging when it isn't. The battery % is also depleting a lot quicker than normal.
I tried a factory reset, wiping and installing a new version of the AOKP ROM I use which fixed the issue temporarily... but as soon as I try charging it again, the charging animation won't go away. This happens even with a different charger all together or a USB cable.
Any ideas on fixing this, or is it time to claim on my insurance? Thanks!
may b the enternal is still not dried , actually wen wet its best to dry it in rice bag for a day or atleast 16,20 hrs then clean an use a sylte warm or cold blow so the moist drys out...so first open the back cover, battery ,sim,sd card an let the phone dry properly..cheeeerz
Thanks but as I say, the phone itself never got wet. Literally a minor amount got on the charger... not sure it is worth drying out a phone that never got wet?
but the end of the usb port is wet right so dont do the charging thing jus use a blow dryer let the thing dry out ,i had dropd my phone in luke warm water of bucket ,i removed it an took out battry, cover and kept in rice bag water was all inside cause wen i checked by shaking it ,i could see water coming then i used a blow dryer an dried it but i had kept it rice for hmmm i think only 2,3 hrs ...but i dint on it for 6hrs like tht....then the next day i powered it an all was fine ..accept the speaker at the back but i used a app tht was supposed to clean speaker, well i don kno weater it got well on its own or the app....well thts my story...m8
be careful with the hairdryer though i know people who have melted plastic drying with a hairdryer xD
did you actually found a way to fix it? i have this problem. and i havent been able to fix it.
Also my PC wont recognize the phone.
Try to clean the usbport. If it doesnt work it needs to be replaced. Its fairly easy and cheap.
Theres guides on youtube.
Well i didnt follow a guide on youtube i just opened it used a toothbrush and alcohol and after with a bottle of suter and it kinda worked, the computer recognizes it but the charging thing is still on.
Im gonna check out the youtube videos.
Thanks!

Water Damage

Hello everyone, so ive dropped my SGS2 in water 4 days ago, its wasnt fully submerged, only the part where my charger is located and only for about a second because i was quick to react. Took it out and noticed that the battery indicator was showing as if the phone was being charged, i blew on the charger entry point(with my mouth) for 5 seconds, and the problem went away. Next morning i wake up, late for work, with that exclamation mark and temperature gauge on my screen. I took out the battery (3500mah chinese that was in the phone while i dropped it in water), put my original samsung battery in it, and the phone started working agaiin, drove to work while charging it, all was ok, then the battery died and i cant charge it anymore. After work, got home, put it in rice for 3 days, now i check, still doesnt wanna charge with original samsung battery, but when i put the chinese battery, the screen turns on and i get the same old exclamation mark and the thermometer.
Weird thing is, my original samsung battery didnt give me the same screen that my chinese battery is giving me now.
Should i try the "fan trick", or do you think the damage is severe due to me trying to charge it while it was still wet??
When electronics hit water, always let the gadget dry in altleast 3-4 days before thinking about turning it on.

If you're talking about repairs with samsung and they even think that it's water damage they won't fix it / charge you for it.

[Q] Note 2 dead, nothing, won't turn on

Verizon
Haven't taken an update since the last kitkat one.
(No root)
Had been running crappy for about 2 months.....last thing I installed was Viber. I un installed it weeks ago.
No change though.
I've also experienced the thing smoking through battery.
Bought 2 batteries with an external charger. Think it was mostly the original battery was bad....
Still....Isn't/wasn't charging over night with the stock charger/mini usb...have been rotating the 2 batteries I bought, charged externally. But they don't last a whole day.
I'm 50 years old. I don't game or watch videos all day. Just text phone and some surfing/Facebook occasionally listen to music/I heart radio.
So, I've been putting off the inevitable hard reset, by running it in safe mode for the last few weeks.
Slightly better battery life, but, pretty useless in that mode.
Also, the wifi and blue tooth turn off on their own. Never leaving the house/range.
It wouldn't turn back on.
I don't have any of that stuff set up, to ever shut it off.
The only thing that fixes it is the 3 or 4 hits on my knee. I found that here somewhere. Honest. It worked. (Why would something that's Solid State respond to being struck?)
Up to this point the phone was never dropped on anything harder than carpet a couple times, wearing a protective case
.
So, I was going to download helium to back it up........so I rebooted it. To get it out of safe mode, for the trip to the play store.
It WAS working. ...had just used the phone. Was on wifi, reading about helium.
That was it......She's dead Jim.......
It has never made so much as a red light for the charger being plugged in. Nothing.
I didn't download anything. Haven't messed with trying to get the lollipop OS...
So........
Removed battery, sd card, sim card., charger port clean as a whistle, used with w/out different chargers, (the one from my samsung tab 10) held power 30 seconds, let off for 2, push again. (Some secret trick I found reading? ).... , held every button for minutes with battery out. ?..
Battery tested with multimeter. It's charged. Both of them are. Have tried both.
Not so much as a blink/flash/vibrate. ..
So from my extensive reading here, it might be my charging board? Something about a cap being bad?
Plugged into the computer I don't get anything. No charge, no acknowledgement it's plugged in by the computer (Win7, , get the sound and an installing driver/what do you want to do Window. Nothing).
I've got Kies installed. Been a long time since I used it though. But again, the computer doesn't recognize it's plugged in.
I only posted my experience because I have not found any others with ALL of these symptoms.
Sorry if anyone thinks it's a repeat.
I've been on here reading for 2 days now.
Pulling my hair out. Would like to salvage this thing. Don't want to get stuck in another contract.
So, , obviously,I'd like to get it running so I can at least back it up, and do a reset. And hopefully get it back to normal.
Also, is there a fix for this wifi/bluetooth thing, or am I going to go around pounding it on my knee every day? Pretty annoying.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts. (Sources for parts)
