Update your ROM, via ROM Manager (If available) and scanning through the forums, every now and again..
I use AnTuTu CPU Master free - Simple, good looking and does the job - Also I'd recommend the SiyahKernel, bei GokHanmoral (See his website: here
Download the latest kernel for your ROM, based on if it's Stock, AOSP or AOKP..
Hope I could help!

Stock means samsung firmware and AOSP/AOKP are firmwares build from the "android source code" released by google without samsung modification/framework. "real android". use aosp rom if you don't like touchwiz or miss nexus functions

The kernel is the "boss" of the OS, which contains all the drivers and commands.
Imagine an OS (Operating System) as a company,
you have following in the OS (company):
the kernel - Boss
the shell - the office/s
the utilities - the outpost/s
The kernel is, like I said, the boss and tells which part of thecompany has to do what, at which point in time.
The shell is the office and calls everyine, making sure everything is going to plan, and delivering commands, from the kernel (boss), to the utilities and externel sources.
The utilities are your main working area, where you can interact actively with the OS and make changes to it, including changes to the UI, settings and apps (programs).
And that's how an operating system works, I hope I broke it down enough, for everyone to understand
Hope I could help!

Well, the main difference is, that they are practicly ll the same.
What most people understand as "stock" firmware, is AOSP code, released by Google, and then modified by the different manufacturers, to give their devices that typical (i.e.) Samsung look.
AOSP is the stock (unmodified and pure) Android code, that is periodicly released by Google, to maintain Android and the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
AOKP means Android Open Kang(ed) Project, kanged code is code, taken from source, and modified, to then be made open source again.
If you take what I write/say seriously (Which you should), then "stock" which, by the way, is branded software, is only a kang, of the AOSP code, so each and every one of you, who has left their device stock, with what they got delivered with, is using a kanged Android ROM.
Hope I could help!

You are the probably not using ROM Manager Premium, buy a key, from Kousch, and then you will be able to set it up
OTA - Over The Air, AKA FOTA = Firmware (Update) Over the Air

Your kernel version is listed in Settings -> About Device
You can download Odin from Sammobile.com/firmware, or buy Mobile Odin from the Play Store.
Mobile Odin has the abilty to auto-detect what sort of tar you want to flash, so you don't have to be an expert in those things to flash a simple kernel
Hope I could help!

Beware with overclocking, that's actually the only way a software can fry your hardware if something goes wrong.
In this case, the warranty will definitly not work.
Either you have modified your device and won't get OTA, you need to go through odin. I think only rooting allows you to get them through kies though.
OR
you have to (triangle away and) go back to a stock rom and you will have update through OTA
So u mean i needa unroot my device???

Wrong - Any modification to the device will "tur off" the ability to Update OTA..
You can update via CWM, TWRP, Odin, Mobile Odin, ADB and so.. And waranty will work in some cases, if you have bought your phone in a shop - it won't work, if you have a contract, just send it in and request a new one..

OK let's clarify something, someone here is giving bad advice.
1.) Don't use ROM manager to flash ROMs or anything else, it can cause issues.
Use it to download them but flash them via your recovery (cwm, twrp etc.) Or with mobile Odin.
2.) If you root your device then it will show as system modified and stop you getting OTAs, we don't care about OTAs on xda, we get it here to flash before 99% of people get OTAs.
3.) TL;DR about kernels: they give you control over your hardware, they allow you to overclock your CPU and GPU, undervolt them too. Also with the S3 we can alter the equaliser settings in our audio chip (Wolfson, great hardware)
Don't worry about the rest, research that in your own time, but DO research it.
4.) Triangle away is an app by chain fire that removes the binary flash count in the bootloader. To simplify, Samsung inserted a mechanism besides the system modified one, that registers if we change anything in our system so if we send it back they can know if we tampered with the system.
Triangle away sets it back to zero.

Come on dude, even if you HAVE modified your device, some ROMs still have FOTA enabled, like with Update Me, ROM Manager and kitchen apps, so what you were saying was wrong - I was not insulting anyone, nor am I "Mind limited". Retarded is the word, btw.
You can use Mobile Odin, to go back to stock, but you don't need to, I'm pretty sure, that as long as the counter states the device is running stock firmware, you can still receive FOTAs.. I'm not too sure, though..
P.S. The OP didn't say he's running stock (rooted/modified) firmware, did he?
Btw, wat is OP?? And is it gd for me to flash cm10 or should i just wait for JB 4.2?? if yes, when and where can I find the jb 4.2 file or package (idk wat its called)And wats the difference between using mobile odin and the original odin that i used before to flash jb 4.1.1??

OP is original post, as in first post in a thread.
As for cm10 well you can always flash it if you want to and when/if 4.2 official drops then you can just flash that, you are never stuck on one or the other.
You can download firmwares from samfirmware.com.
You need a PC/laptop to use Odin, mobile Odin is an app on your phone with the same functionality as Odin.
Its really convenient.

Custom ROM != stock ROM when it comes to OTAs, stop trying to cover your tracks by twisting what was said.
On stock and rooted = no OTAs.
Custom ROMs with OTAs means you can get updates of that custom ROM only and they aren't even real OTAs, it just downloads the full firmware as opposed to the deltas.
The jury is still out on whether or not you are "mind limited" or "retarded" as you said yourself.

Grand quattro stock recovery dont allow us to perform such actions. You have to flash cwm using odin. The detailed process is mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2494471
And I dont know about add bocker, removing bloatwares etc. But u can perform such actions with root uninstaller, titanium backup, adaway etc etc. I have rooted my phone just to use gl2sd soft. Actually am pretty happy with stock rom and recovery. After getting all the conception I will use those things. If you are having less knowledge then dont do anything till u know what u r doing. And obviously take backup of efs folder, its really important if u are planning to play wid ur firmware or recovery..

I have been a member of xda for a good minute. So, I know not to post questions or ask for help unless you have exhausted all other means. Well, I have exhausted all means. I rooted my boyfriend lg p769 yesterday because I was tired of him complaining about the bloatware on his phone. I was stunned to find out that although it was rooted I could not remove the bloatware. I used root checker to check. So I searched xda and found out that the boot load on those phones is locked. I tried several different methods from the kdz to fastboot. None worked. So, I decided to try one last thing and decided that if it didn't work I would leave his phone alone. I searched google play and found some app that was to install recovery. I installed the app and told it to install clockmod recovery. When the phone cut off and back on it was stuck on the s/w updating screen. I searched xda and tried the support tool update, the guide that says unbrick/unlock bl, have also tried pc suite update and fastboot. Within fast boot it gets stuck on the wait for o...something something device. The update tool stops at downloading firm with an invalid path error. I don't know what else to do. I feel bad because I have my rooted s2 on rom deviant developers working just fine and he has nothing. I know in the past when I have softbricked my phones send it in and the manufacture did a warranty exchange. However, I don't want my boyfriend waiting 2-6wks to get his phone back. I am asking the xda community for any suggestions.
Welcome! You can try using fastboot to flash ICS x and u, then flash T-Mobile 20h using offline method.
After you root, I suggest installing L9Recovery followed by making a backup. If you want less bloat, you can try restoring a custom backup.

Well the way the op recommends it is:
1 - Copy recovery.img to root of SDCard
2 - Open Terminal Emulator (or adb shell) with root and run the following command-
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
3 - Reboot
But I don't know if that would work in all cases/haven't tried, the other way to flash it is by getting into fastboot mode via adb or something and using following commands:
-fastboot erase recovery
-fastboot flash recovery recovery.omg

Did you manage to do it?
I needed to update too, similar thought process. Wondering whether i can flash this *.img using Flashify. I also made a backup of my stock recovery.img before I installed TWRP, could that be used either?
And most importantly, was the OTA update smooth after you got stock recovery back?
Worst case scenario, no TWRP recovery & unable to boot...
hi please help me

hi i bought a refurbished lg g2d800 but accidentally i flashed a kdz file of d802 now my touch isnt working and imei is gone too please some body help mew
I recently went through the process of trying to update my recovery rom (yes, all rooted up already!).
The problem I was running into was while the tools (TWRP manager, ROM Manager, Goo Manager) all said the recovery was flashed successfully it wasn't.
During the course of my many attempts (which included some hangs, removal of the battery, etc) all of a sudden the updated recovery ROM appeared!
I have no idea what sequence of events resulted in the right behavior, either the tools are not really flashing properly, or there is some black magic (more likely) process which is restoring the recovery ROM.
What's the proper process to change/update your recovery ROM?
Sure yo are rooted but what firmware are you on, unless you're on mdk you can't flash recovery. So if your firmware says me7, mi1, or mj7 you're sol (ull find it under baseband in the about phone setting)

Then you might wanna try flashing cwm manually... Goo manager hasn't worked for me for a while... And ROM manager hasn't ever worked for me...

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. Does one need to go through that process in general on S4 these days?
Also, what's the recommendation TWRP or CM?

Just tried this process to upgrade to newest CWM recovery 6.0.4.7 (currently on 6.0.4.4). COuldn't update via rom manager (again says it flashed successfully but still running old version).
When I run the install-cwm.cmd script in that loki package, I get a permission denied when it tried to run the loki.sh script on my phone.
Any more ideas??
