Bye bye pen window - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

First off thanks for stopping and seeing if you could help with my problem.
I used towelroot to gain root and tweak stock on sprint note 3, which worked perfectly. After installing busybox, supersu, and Xposed installer I went about reclaiming my phone from bloatware and limptard features. At one point I searched what apks were safe to remove from TW based roms, one that wasnt specified in the list was rakein.apk which I ASSUMED (<-- the whole reason for the headache...not confirming its true function) was part of scrapbook due to its icon....nope it controlled pen window.
I need to find a way to reinstall rakein.apk to system/app without it being cleared upon reboot.
Steps attemped so far:
Restored through original backup method-failed
Manually placed apk in system/app, corrected permissions to rwrr-failed
^ that plus mounted system r/w then unmounting partition for reboot-failed
Sideload-failed
---------------
Havent seen anything other fixes except a fresh flash from sammy.
Theres nothing changed on my sprint note 3 except for xposed and active modules all of which ive scoured for possible solution.
Sadly I didnt have a current sys backup either.
Thanks again for everyones help.
Have a good day.

You can always Odin back to stock and reroot. If everything else fails.

Ya... I was just hoping there was a reason for not being able to just restore it but I guess I broke it lol. Thanks

I have not used touch wiz for a while but what does pen window do? I use Tasker to pop an application menu and change keyboards when I detach the S-Pen. I am using SlimRom also.

It is just Samsungs version of a floating app windows. Adjustable by drawing the desired dimensions with the s pen. Multiples of the same windows. Rooted and equipped with aean developed app, all apps are pen window compatible.

Maybe you missed the odex?
Remove .apk extension from odex file. added it only cause of xda file type filter.

[HC EMMC] Working Market & Gapps

I want to share the versions of the Market and various Gapps that work for me on Sam's HC EMMC v4.0, 2nd ed. build {Huge props to him, deeper-blue, and others who got HC working on the NC. Without their heroic efforts, I'd be working 4 jobs right now trying to save up to buy a Xoom}
This script is the first one I run after doing a fresh build of HC EMMC, but you should also be able to do it on a stale version of HC as well.
Maps is version 5.0
While I am confident that these files will work for you as well, please remember, individual results may vary---use at your own discretion.
NOTE: The 'GoogleServicesFramework.apk' file in the attached .zip will remove the blue wi-fi icon from Sam's initial build. If you prefer the blue icon over a working Market (My Apps), then DO NOT proceed with the installation!
That being said, please do the following before trudging ahead:
+ Perform a full backup using your bootable CWR SD card [see samuelhalff's thread for instructions on this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947071]
+ Backup each of the original files on your NC that will be replaced by the script
+ See #1 & #2 above...you've been warned
Instructions for Installation:
Extract the files contained within the attached .zip into the same directory as your ADB directory (where your 'adb.exe' file lives). Mine was located here on my computer: C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
Connect your NC to your computer, ensuring ADB is working properly ahead of time
Double-click on the file 'HoneyGAppInstall.cmd' and the script to install the new apps will run
The script will reboot your NC upon completion
Once your NC comes backup from the reboot, you can then login to the Market, select "My Apps" and they should show up right away.
I have also attached the 'build.prop' file I use. This modified file allows me to see tablet apps (NY Times Tablet, More Good News Tablet) and also I can see/download/install both Angry Birds games.
NOTE: The ro.sf.lcd_density is set to 140 in my file. This is not friendly to Zeam and needs to be set to at least 150 for that launcher to work without Force Closing in Portrait mode.
Good luck and let me know if any issues.
EDIT: For those running a build that is not new and already has the original Market setup, would be best to do the following steps after running the Gapps script:
1.) Settings > Manage Applications > All > Market: Clear Cache then Force Stop -- DO NOT Clear Data2.) Settings > Manage Applications > All > Google Services Framework: Clear Data3.) Reboot

Would it be possible to flash the market zip through recovery? Looks like it would work in theory.
I can see all the installed apps on My Apps. Thanks for these files. But I have one problem. My Nook no longer shows up on market.android.com. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't use that site much, but I did just check it out of curiosity.
I verified it was working by going into: My Market Account > Settings tab. I can see "LogicPDZoom2" with last access of today's date.

Not being a dev, I don't know how to compile the files I attached and make them flashable.
However, I can tell you that I do have a black-themed Market by Darkslide for my DroidX that is flashable via CWR, but sadly, it did not work for me. I tried it by booting to the CWR SD card. Would have been nice to have the black-themed version.
I also have a flashable version of Zeam, but again, did not work for me.
Now, I have not tried it by going into CWR using Sam's method with his built-in utility. This is because I have not really been able to get that to work 100% of the time and also because it is just so easy to get to CWR via the bootable SD card that I have not really messed with it too much.
I can post the black-themed Market if someone smarter than me wants to take a look at it...might prove useful. I am just not sure if a DX file can be used on the NC
Just let me know and maybe we can figure it out together.

And you have to be pretty fast at disabling that little "HQ" icon in the top-right corner of the screen. From my experience, has to be almost instantaneous by the time it appears on the screen or the video won't load.

Thanks for checking. I did mess around with the build.prop you provided. I think I messed something up. I will use the file you provided without any changes.
Thanks.
Not being dev minded, I don't know how much help I would be. I was able to extract the apks from the zip file and move them with root explorer, changed permissions and it appears to be holding. Have rebooted twice and still good. Your script in the zip file would not work with cwr since it is windows based, I think. I don't know if the apks would install in recovery without a script, seems like it would not. Anyway, thanks for putting this together. Market works with the apks and the build. prop seems to have helped as well. Thanks again.

You are most welcome and yes, the .zip is not flashable for CWR. XDA will only allow for certain types of files to be uploaded and .zip is one of them, so easier for me to go that route.
Files in the .zip are meant to be extracted into the folder where ADB.exe exists in order for the script to work correctly. As stated in the OP, I have only tested this on a Win7 box, as that is the only platform I have access to at the moment.
Root Explorer will also work, as you already know. So, for those who want to go that route, it is certainly an option. Glad things are working well for you at this point. Thanks for your feedback!
I'm just checking. These are the Android 3.0 gapps from the XOOM, not the 2.3 gapps? (Sorry I'm a little tired and don't have the emmc version installed, I run the SD card version, so I can't test ATM)

2.3, not 3.0.
Just transferred all the apps and the build.prop to a stale build of eMMC 2nd (3 days of use) and other than using root explorer followed the instructions to a T. My apps seemed to work but not thinking I updated maps in the market and now it doesnt work. Tried to uninstall updates in market (didnt seem to even finish the process), replace with my original apk, replace with apk from your zip here, clearing cache and data. Nothing seems to bring it back to life. Anyone else have this problem?
P.S. I think the white wifi icon looks nice.

Just used a combination of Root Explorer and ADB (for the chmod) to use your mod and everything is working great. Thanks a ton for posting this!
Only change I had to make was the LCD Density in the build.prop since I want to use Zeam. I tried using the default launcher but it is so laggy, I just can't.

Glad all is working for you and that is a good point...I will update the OP to let folks know the build.prop has the LCD Density set at 160, which is not Zeam portrait-mode friendly.
Thanks for the feedback!
Okay, just downloaded the new Amazon Appstore and installed Angry Birds Rio (the first Free App of the Day). Force Close... so I tried both 140 and 160 LCD Densities and still no luck. Tried both of the other Angry Birds (original & seasons) and they force close on all three densities as well.
Any thoughts on why you are able to run them but I can't using the same build.prop? The only thing I had changed from your build.prop was the LCD density, but as I said, even changing it back to match your original setting doesn't make Angry Birds work.
Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons work for me. I had to move them to the internal memory. I already tried moving Rio to internal memory, however it still FC's. I can get the game to almost start, but when it's time to start shooting, it FC's. I haven't tried changing the LCD density.
Same issue here with Rio. Tried internal and no dice. Doesn't run at all when on SD.

[Q] Swype 3.0

Is there any way we can get the new swype update incorporated into some of the ROMs? Or do we have to download it separately?

I would imagine it will get incorporated into future ROMs or included in an update to a current ROM. But if you want it now you will have to download it separately. Before you can download 3.0 you will have to switch your default keyboard to another keyboard then using a file explorer app such as root explorer go in and delete these four files: /system/app/swype.apk, /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod, /dbdata/databases/com.swype.android.inputmethod, and /system/lib/libswypecore.so
swype 3.0 beta has drm/licensing stuff in it..so it will expire at some point if we incorporate as is into the roms (comrom/etc)
im hopeful we can get that stuff removed as was done for 2.29 that we were using in tsm roms
Okay cool. Thanks for the replies
Spent some time trying to get swype 3b installed.
The installer apparently requires the old version to be removed. So I did (Titanium). The installer went all the way through the download process, but actually installing gave me "was not installed." Gee, what a helpful error.
So I tried downloading an apk from the web and got the same error. So I tried using root explorer to install the apk manually (including setting permissions and changing owner). It FC'd repeatedly after reboot. So I removed it.
Then I tried adb install. That didn't work either. Then, realizing that Titanium didn't have a backup for my original Swype, I tried installing the v2 apk via adb, but that doesn't work either.
Ugh. Now I don't have Swype at all! Any ideas? Can someone tell me if there's a unique version for this phone or something?

Me too on the Swype problem. I had 3.0 working on the CM7 Alpha that jt built but that was a little to buggy so I switched to CommROM 2.0. Because of the way Swype is integrated into CommROM, it can't be easily replaced. Would love for someone to point me in the right direction on this.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you're not supposed to download swype beta if you have a phone that comes with swype installed. I'm not sure why but I read that it won't work.
Choose a different keyboard. Uninstall old swype. Reboot, then install new beta.
Worked for me.
Yeah, I struggled with that issue last night (getting "was not installed" with 3.0 after removing 2)... but don't fret, it turns out the solution (which I discovered by mistake) is to literally just reboot your phone before installing 3.0. Hurr.
Keep in mind you still do have to manually delete /system/lib/libswypecore.so using Root Explorer or the like after uninstalling Swpye 2 via TB -- otherwise you will have problems.
Is there an echo in here?
And I did not have to manually delete any files and everything is working fine.
I used Titanium to delete the original, then used the installer without problems. That said, I don't like 3.0 and went back to the old version.
Working!
After seeing your replies, I deleted the lib file. I also ran
adb shell pm list packages
and found com.swype.android.inputmethod was still installed:
adb uninstall com.swype.android.inputmethod
then reboot.
then used swype little installer package.
and now it works!
Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy
Delete using Titanium, reboot, install using the standard Swype installer seems to work.
Keeps getting better with every release!!!
I had been having some issues with the latest Swype beta's auto-correction, in that when I was touch-typing for non-dictionary words (like acronyms, etc.), the auto-correction was doing its job and was 'auto-correcting'; but of course, I didn't want these words corrected! (I guess I was still operating under Swype's old rules which were when you touch-typed, it always assumed you were entering the correct spelling of whatever you had typed). So I turned off automatic auto-correct, and now I just have the word suggestion bar. This process seems to be working much better for me now.

Are there any other file managers besides root explorer that take advantage of root access?
I'm sure root explorer is good and all, I just don't feel like forking over 3 or 4 bucks or whatever for it - I don't like paying for apps, it's just one more thing that isn't a free download if you have to reflash your ROM or do a factory reset or something. Learned that lesson a few years ago with an 2nd gen iPod Touch.
That being said, there's plenty of free file managers out there, will any of them perform root operations such as deleting Swype.apk manually?
Once you purchase an app it is linked to your gmail acct. If you wipe or reflash it's still your's. Save yourself the headache and just buy root explorer.

[A] Can't Defrost apps with Titanium Backup on ICS

I didn't notice anyone had a posted a solution to this problem, so I thought I'd do so in case anyone else ran into it.
I was able to freeze apps fine with Titanium Backup on the latest ICS leak (XXLPB as of right now) but ran into some problems when I wanted to defrost them. Titanium Backup said they were defrosted successfully but they still were listed as frozen and didn't appear in the app drawer.
Here is how to solve the problem:
1. Find /data/system/packages.xml with Root Explorer or an equivalent
2. Make a backup of packages.xml right away in the same folder in case we mess anything up any need to restore it later
3. Copy packages.xml onto the root of your internal or external storage
4. Plug your device into your computer and copy packages.xml from the root of your storage over to your computer
5. Open the packages.xml on your computer with your editor of choice - I suggest Notepad++
6. Search for the string {enabled="2"} (without the { }). Every line ending in this represents a frozen app. The lines should look something like this:
Code:
<package name="com.sec.android.widgetapp.socialhub" codePath="/system/app/SocialHubWidget.apk" nativeLibraryPath="/data/data/com.sec.android.widgetapp.socialhub/lib" flags="1" ft="11b7e237e00" it="11b7e237e00" ut="11b7e237e00" version="1" sharedUserId="10001" [COLOR="Red"]enabled="2"[/COLOR]>
7. Now for every app you wish to unfreeze, replace {enabled="2"} with {enabled="1"} (again, without the {})
7. Save packages.xml, move it back onto your phone's storage, and use Root Explorer or an equivalent to replace your original packages.xml at /data/system/packages.xml with your new one
8. Reboot

See this post for a way to freeze and unfreeze system apps without messing with the packages.xml file. Thanks polzovotel.
Will doing this then allow titanium backup to freeze/defrost apps as it should, or do I have to do this each time I want to defrost an app?
You will have to do this each time you want to defrost an app.
However, I would imagine it would be pretty trivial for a dev to make an app to automate the process. Unfortunately, I don't have the coding knowledge to do that.
Seems daft I cannot defrost apps on Android 4 in titanium or my tool box just doesn't work.
Not really getting any help from the app developers either!

Hmmm, so you both have some apps successfully defrosted using this method and some not. And I'm assuming you have double checked to make sure you did the process correctly and made the changes to the right app references in the file.
I'm just brainstorming here, but can you think of anything that the apps which didn't defrost have in common? Are they all user apps, systems apps, on SD, protected apps,...etc?
cant defrost
umm, first scuse my "english"
maybe something is not function well in my phone
but i think too that the problem are some apps that has variuos services running
have you tried using the gemini app?
thanks
wow thanks johhny
everything works . i did it on my galaxy note
here's what i did:
replace {enabled="true"} with {enabled="1"}
There is a nice option in in the ICS rom itself - to disable/enable applications. So there is no need to deal with the packages.xml file - just use native interface:
For me - working w/o any issues.

That is a good solution, but it only works for system apps. Otherwise if it is a user app your only choice is total uninstallation... which is less than ideal in some circumstances.
I thought I found a work around for user apps by using Titanium backup to convert them to system apps so you could disable them through the native interface...but this led to apps disappearing from the system... so it looks like it isn't a viable workaround.

I'm running Calkulin's ROM based on the ICS leak of FC07 and it doesn't defrost. The toast message says it did, but the app still shows as frozen.

Power Defrost seems to be the only way to do it.

Help Requested: Hiding root from Good for Enterprise

After a few torturous months on a Note 3 (screw AT&T for locked boot loader!), I've decided to switch back to the glorious M7. In the meantime, I've started new job which requires usage of Good for Enterprise. I've been a CM nightly junkies when I was using the M7 but with this email client that won't work with root, I'd like to see if anyone else has experience and effective strategies to work around the root detection.
From researching on other forums, it seems like removing SU, busybox, com.noshufou.android.su, and XBIN folder then GFE should work. That is a bit of work to do it every day though. Has anyone tried simpler something like Hide My Root and would that get past GFE root detection?

You could create two scripts that you could keep stored in the phones memory. One script will remove the files and place them in a temp location. The other script will put the files back in their proper location when you are not at work.
There is an xposed module that, rootcloak I think it is that will make the app think you're not rooted

RootCloak used to work until recently. As far as I can tell, it might have stopped working after the most recent SuperUser update, because I don't recall installing a Good for Enterprise update.
Thanks for the responses. I'll try to remove those files before installing Good for Enterprise. Trying not to tip off IT that my phone isn't stock.
I haven't not gotten around to switch back to the M7 since I made up my mind to do it. Work has finally slowed down a little so I read up on the instructions again and there are a few points that I'd like to see if someone is kind enough to clarify for me.
Here are the instructions I found on mydroidworld forum for the Droid X by _Matt (http://www.mydroidworld.com/topic/7904-good-for-enterprise-work-around/:
"1. INSTALL Good For Enterprise Last, its the last thing you install.
2. Be sure DX2 Boot Strap is installed.
3. ROM and setup your phone however you want.
4. Create a backup just in case
5. remove these files, SU, BUSYBOX, com.noshufou.android.su, XBIN Folder
6. Reboot
7. Install GFE and activate
8. If you need to make O/S changes learn how to make flashable .ZIP files through bootstrap. Works perfectly and I have no issues with GFE.
If you change ROM's you will need to do these steps to keep GFE working.
1. In GFE app turn off persistent mode.
2. Go Offline
3. Quit app
4. Install Root.zip that you made before unrooting
5. Freeze or back up GFE with Titanium back up
6. ROM your device
7. set it up
8. restore apps
9. remove these files, SU, BUSYBOX, com.noshufou.android.su, XBIN Folder
10. Reboot
11. Start GFE"
On the first set of instruciton, what is the equivalent for the second point "Be sure DX2 Boot Strap is installed." on the M7? And on point 8, what is does it mean by making .ZIP files through bootstrap?
I'm guessing point 4 in the second set of isntruction is to flash the zip file through a custom recovery. Am I correct in thinking that? Thanks for the help!
I'm guessing boot strap is an old recovery. All the readings I could find are from a few years ago.
So I think it's using a custom recovery to make a backup before installing GFE for the first time, do all necessary changes, remove the files related to root then install and activate GFE.
When it's time to change ROM, completely shut down GFE, flash the rooted backup, freeze/backup GFE with titanium backup, flash new ROM, remove the root files again, restore GFE.
Am I on the right track about this? If that's how it's supposed to work then if I just want to update to a new CM nightly, I can probably just shut down GFE, flash, remove files and start GFE again.

Temporary Root on the Verizon Note Edge

Check out this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-att/general/supersu-please-t3110954
I tried it and got temporary root on my Verizon Note Edge. I know it is temporary but at least it is root.
I do not have the developer version btw..
Did you use the Note 4 .img file?

I just followed the video that is posted in the OP and that gave me temporary root. I didn't use any .img files.

Doesn't it say to use one of the downloadable boot img files from the linked site? It's a boot.img file.
Also what sorts of things have you tried so far with it?

I have tried Root Explorer and it allows me to read and write to the SD card. I have Root Call blocker and that works as well, I have tried Xposed Framework and so far no go, it does a reboot and you will lose root. This is still a work in progress but it looks a lot more promising than a couple of months ago.
I did not use any img files due to mine being a note edge and I think those files are for those who have taken the lollipop upgrade on their Note 4's. Since we have not received the lollipop upgrade to our edge's yet you should be good to at least temporary root because it is only working on KitKat.
I was able to temp root with king root 4.0.1 apk ... and was able to remove bloatware files from: system/app and: system/priv-app but after reboot they are all back.
Update.... after temp rooting. . Install Titanium Backup and Freeze system apps will enable you to "turn off" apps that you otherwise wouldn't be able to disable through the stock app manager in settings menu.
See screenshot below. ...
Screenshot
Screenshot of TouchWiz disabled because I use a different Home Launcher. And YES it keeps disabled through a reboot.
Was able to turn off The KNOX apps as well... seems to keep root longer without rebooting. HOWEVER root doesn't last forever.. meaning apps like Titanium Backup will lose root... and you will have to reboot and run King root again to get temp root to freeze more apps etc.
This is still a work in progress, hopefully the losing root problem will be fixed soon.
This is nice but after messing with it all week I gave up. I could easily get temp.root and get SU installed but you lose root after about an hour even if you touch nothing. You will also get random reboots a lot and then have to start over.

If you install Titanium Backup and "freeze" all the Knox apps [see post 7, 8, & 9] you can keep root long enough to freeze all unwanted bloatware. That way you can at least "turn off" [disable] those apps from running in background etc. It's something more then we had.
Keep at it guys! I'll join when I get some time tomorrow and Monday

Yup, this worked. All week I was trying to "remove" these applications via tibu but yesterday I just froze them. I still lost root but see everything I froze is still listed as "Turned off" in Application manager. That will do for now, Thanks!
when you temp root, use TiBu to "convert to user app" this should move all the files to the user apps directory instead of system apps then try to uninstall and see if they come back after reboot. Just a hunch but I can't try since I don't have the retail version.

I do not see the option in Titanium Backup to ”convert to user app" .. Am I missing something?

You need to long press on the app. Towards the end of the setting that popup you should see the convert to user app setting.
Easiest way I found was to freeze all the apps you don't want, filter for frozen apps then go through the list converting them to user apps
Edit: this doesn't work. They will install themselves back after doing this.
I figured they would come back.. freezing app is as good as it gets for now.
long press or swipe right to get to the additional options. also thank you guys for confirming that for me. i wasnt for sure since I dont have the retail version to test out on.
also i think i remember reading in the note 4 forum that they were able to get it perma deleted by uninstalling all updates then uninstalling the app or something along those lines. I will go back and read it again to be sure of what i read, i may have misread.
I used this method to disable knox and bloatware on my Verizon Edge even without root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/disable-knox-ota-root-t2972263
As far as temp root is concerned using King root, I suppose while on a rooted state, one can make changes to the system such as:
1) Enabling 3rd party apps like ES File Explorer to write to SD card by modifying platform.xml as described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524277
2) Enabling hidden menu (if this is important to you) by modifying /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu file.
Even if you lose root, the changes you made to these files should stick, correct?
