Hi my friend recently gave me his old vibrant after he found it and said I could have it now I have a good phone already so can I take the Sim out and use it as like a iPod also would
D it charge him even after I take out the Sim card because I notice it still showed that it had signal after I told the Sim card out
Also its a T-Mobile so would it charge or could I take it out factory reset root and be good

nope, no one will be charged any thing while it's not in service. you can do what ever you like with out having to worry.

Serious Data Problem

So long story short, I opened a new line and swapped my hardware to the new line for the TB on my line. After I left BB, I called Verizon to do the swap. They said they couldn't because my SIM card was programmed for the original line and I had to go back to a VZW to get a new provisioned SIM, which I did. It worked when I left, but since late last night, I have no 4G or 3G. Any ideas what the issue could be?
Oh and when the phone goes into sleep mode and I awaken it, the 4G is lit up and then shortly after, no data.

when i first got my phone, the original 4g card wasnt working. turns out is was just bad... they swapped it for a new one and all is well. so i'm assuming u've already tried to reboot and see if that helps. maybe that card is bad as well? hmmm....u should go back to see if they can swap out to another one.
When I was in the store getting mine they were talking about how they'd been having allot of issues activating phone because of the large demand was causing a backup in the switch. There was a guy that walked in about 5 min before me and his would not activate, but then mine activated perfectly. So I guess it was intermittent. Makes me wonder if you got caught up in that backup when you activated the second sim.

Should I go back?
I would do a battery pull (pretty sure you've already done that) and remove and reseat the sim as well (if you haven't already) and if that doesn't work I'd reach out to Cust Service. May be something easily fixable in the system, save ya the time and gas of driving to the store.
maybe try a *228 and press 1 to program .... just a thought, I hate having to deal with customer service
I could be wrong but I thought *228 did not work with these phones because of the sim card.

I'd assume there is some good system in place for phones ordered online and what not.
How did anyone who ordered their phone online activate?

My 4g would drop off randomly and I just assumed it was my area's LTE working out it's kinks. Then after doing the manual 3g only switch, the data was still randomly dropping off, so I was up to try anything out.
I pulled the battery and reseat the Sim like you said and so far so good...mind explaining that?, lol, doesnt make sense to me.
thanks in advance

Improperly seated SIM card? Corrupted memory that a battery pull resets? Good Karma?

Wow, exact same experience I had yesterday. I went in late, like 5:00 PM. I had to wait a while for someone to actually help me, but once I said what phone I wanted it wasn't more than 20 minutes to get the transaction done.
Do NOT do *228.
I had this same problem today when activating my phone. Just call Verizon and they will walk you through getting it activated correctly.
Ironically, on my way to VZW it suddenly started working. LOL. "clog" in the system? I don't know, but it's fast as hell!
I don't have 4G in my area yet but I got the TB anyway. I love it. But the 3G does the same thing, just keeps dropping out.
This keeps happening to me also. Its very Frustrating. What the number to VZW Customer Service?

doesnt it still update the other radio? not everything uses lte.
No need for *228 because the sim card now is provisioned with auto PRL for when the phone does enter 3G service
DO NOT EVER ESN SWAP THE PHONE TO A NON 4G
Just like mentioned initially, the sim card and phone are designed for 4G lines only so swapping back to your old 3G device or onto another line is a bad idea.
If your trying to do an alternative upgrade and the store your at is full of morons, ask them if they could possibly do a Customer Provided Equipment Upgrade and then then ring out the phone in their point of sale system with the contract you have signed.
Until VZ Corporate figures out another way to do alternative upgrades, this is the only method I have found to get around this
Yes in many cases (including me) we have found it to take a while for 3G or 4G to stay on. Give it time. dial #832 to prove your phone can make calls and receive text messages. anywhere from 10 to some cases an hour before the phone is in full lock.
If your still having a problem go out for a walk or drive, heard switching between towers can help push the process.
I had the exact same problem as the OP, to fix it Verizon made me go back to best buy, you have to get the phone exchanged for a new one and then they have to call in to setup the new untouched TB on the line you want it on. Believe me it took 3 hours for them to finally fix it, and that's what did it.

LTE sim cards?

Ok, so I'm totally used to CDMA, obviously, but I've lived abroad and appreciated the beauty of just swapping SIM cards in when you're in a new country.
Is it possible to just swap SIM cards like GSM cards, or do you still have to call Verizon to activate? The reason I ask is, my father and I were going to swap Thunderbolts, but I didn't have time to call Verizon and do the ESN swap thing. Could we just have swapped SIM cards?
SIm card
SIM cards are for GSM technologies.... Verizon LTE is a GSM tech... And yes thats the theory, with Verizon announcing some day you will be able to use other networks LTE SIM cards in VZW phones. Sim card in your fathers phone gives you access to his google account and contacts.. unless you have transferred all google contacts to your SIM card.
It will only work with the sim you are given for the TB.

Got it. So the SIM is tied to the ESN somehow? Either way, they don't work like GSM sims.
they would most likely if the phone were entirely gsm, but since it's not. Like if you ruin the one you have, the only way to get a new one is directly from verizon and they can only be activated for the phone they are first put into.
dude no one here knows what they are talking about. if you swap sims with your dads phone then it should work fine. the phones will activiate with the respective phone number tied to your sim card. that is how you activate a replacement device as well. i just took my sim from my old phone and put it in the new phone and that is it. works JUST like GSM

If that was true, I wouldnt have to replace my SIM card both of the times Ive sent my phone in for repairs. My service is still on, just switched to a different phone. The verizon rep I spoke with yesterday(One of the few that actually know what she was talking about) confirmed that the moment that a phone gets disconnected the sim card gets retired. I dont know why, and I dont understand it, but thats the way VZW is rolling with it for now. As long as I dont have to pay for it, IDC. lol.

that must be because whoever is disconnecting the phone is killing the sim also for some reason. i have used the same SIM card in 2 thunderbolts and a samsung charge.

That's just it. That rep doesn't know what they're talking about. If you get a replacement TB, nothing should be changed on the account - no phone gets "disconnected." You simply move the SIM to the new phone. Sounds like that rep thinks it should be like a CDMA phone, where the account is changed to reflect that the phone's ESN has been changed when swapping phones.

Did you activate an old phone while waiting for repairs? That's really the only way your SIM would be deactivated.

I did. Im still unsure of why they retire my sim though. All in order to send me another one that will sit here till my phone gets back. Why not just put it on hold or put it on temporary hold?
Sim cards work in any phone that will take them.
Just to put this one to bed--they work just like GSM SIM cards. I swapped my SIM between another Thunderbolt and a Charge, and it worked perfectly every single time.

Network Reject - HELP please

Hello Problem solvers
I am going to buy an HTC Amaze , but there seems to be a little problem with the network of the phone , below i have stated down the exact lines what the seller has told me. Please suggest should i buy this or not.
The seller says :
"I bought it from someone and everything was unused. I put my sim card in and it worked for a few hours then it was unable to read my sim card. My sim still works on my other smartphone, but I do not have the time to find out what is wrong with the phone. I've tried other sim cards from other phones and also did NOT work. Seems like it won't connect to the network no matter what. Maybe the phone is locked or is not able to be used for whatever reason. Everything on the phone works perfectly as new. WIFI, apps, camera camcorder, games, etc. Everything.. Just doesn't seem like it will get any signal from the service provider. Possibly someone will know what to do and can fix or modify it. Can use it like it is or take it for parts, I don't know. Comes with all original equipment: USB cable/charger, manuals, and will have 8GB micro SD card. AGAIN, THE PHONE IS NOT CONNECTING TO THE NETWORK (SERVICE PROVIDER) AT ALL."

He later adds on to his saying :
UPDATE: Actually, the phone recognizes when a sim card is in, but will not connect to the network to make a call or connect for data. I am almost sure nothing is wrong with the phone and possibly could be a problem with the network or service provider.

Has anyone experienced this before? Please let me know what should i do, The price in which he is giving it to me is very good. If there are any solutions for this problem , please mention.
Thank you forum!
Regards,
Hmmm....the phone is like a month old. It is still under warranty. Why isn't the seller getting it fixed rather than take a loss? I'd be very suspicious. It could have been reported stolen and locked down. My spidey sense is tingling.
My replacement did this, I went into network settings and chose network, search automatically and wala problem solved. But still don't hand over the green until your sure.

Could the IMEI be blacklisted?
You have to call Tmo and have them register your sim. I had same prob when I first got amaze.

it might also be the sim card ... i know when i bought the amaze from the tmo store they said it will not take the sim from my old phone and that it only works with the sim card that came with the phone...

I had this problem running miui, cm7, and now I'm on unnammed. I've used all the modems and still nothing helps. I thought unnammed didn't have this problem? To fix it I haft to flip to airplane mode and back, then its fixed.

Could be APN settings. I don't know them off hand, but they are listed in post 2 of the miui thread.
If it happens on multiple ROMs it could also be a bad SIM card. Does it do it on pure stock? If so, try a new SIM card.

This. I haven't seen this issue reported often, and in the past, it's turned out to be an app interfering with the connection. If not, it's likely an apn issue.

I've had the same thing happen to me on other AOSP roms too. On both the SGS2 and my captivate.
I just switched to iscrewed to see if the prob is still there. Its hard to reproduce the bug, but it happens when i go from either:
1. being connected to wifi for a long time and then leaving that area, mobile data doesnt turn back on
2. being in a bad service area for a long time, and then leaving it, mobile data doesnt turn back on.
The worst thing about it is i use google voice for texts, and thats usually how i can tell that it cut out, because i stop getting texts from people.
I love android and google, but honestly if problems like this dont get ironed out, then as long as the next iphone has a decent size screen im probably switching over.
FYI this has occurred when i had the bare minimum installed on my phone, and i never use any ridiculous battery saving apps.

ill try this out tomorrow. just now when checking my email i had to turn on airplane mode and back off to get data to work.
also, i tried the apn settings on the first page of the miui thread and it didnt work. i tried those settings on miui, wiui, cm7, and unnammed but they all made it so that my internet didnt work at all.
so just to clarify, i shouldnt haft to change apn settings and my phone shouldnt be doing this on non stck roms, right? sim is likely the problem? this has gotten really old really quick and its embarrassing when im trying to show my friends something but my phone isnt working.
Your phone should work fine on any ROM you find here. Mine does. I never have to play with APNs, even on miui. I never have to play with airplane mode or power cycle. But, when my SIM was bad I would drop data connectivity all the time. Calls would fail (outbound only), and other glitchy reception issues. Sometimes airplane mode fixed it, sometimes power cycle, sometimes airplane mode on, power cycle, and all times it was temporary. Its worth a try, shouldn't cost anything to get a new SIM. If they give you trouble at the store just tell them you called 611 and they told you to go in for a new one. If that doesn't fix it go warranty route for a new phone.

Those APN settings have worked fine for me on both CM7 and every Sammy ROM I've used. I always have (unrelated) problems with MIUI, so I can't verify that one.
So i went today and got a new SIM. Its been about 9 hours, but no problems yet. Time will tell if it works, but im willing to bet that was the problem, and this is why.
When i went to get my sim, the guy there told me that when ATT started rolling out 4g phones (which includes 3.5g) many employees had trouble with their data switching on and off until they switched their sim cards.
Then i started thinking to myself - I've had the problem about as long as I had my SGS2, and only had the problem with AOSP roms on my captivate - then i made the connection.
When i used a stock, or stock based rom on my captivate, i had no problems. The second i used an international ROM, or an AOSP rom is when i would have the issues. What is the difference between the roms............. The ATT rom doesnt have hspa+ enabled, so using my old "3g" sim card i was fine. No 3.5g to connect to to cause problems. CM and international Roms would use that new 3.5g network and would then screw up.
That is my theory anyway, and if it turns out true it would have solved one of my biggest annoyances with android. (or at least my android experience)
fingers crossed
i too went in and got a new sim. my phone service actually quit working before going in. id get calls and i could hear them but they couldnt hear me. i replaced the sim and all is good. where miui would hang and data would freeze and id haft to redo the airplane mode trick, it would just hang for a sec or 2 and then start downloading again. ive only had it hang 2x now and i think its because it might be switching from hspa to 3g or even wifi.
so for the sim card thing worked. if it fails in the mean time, ill come back to this and give an update. thanks for suggesting it being the sim card cause i wouldnt have thought of that.
I'm another day strong without any problems. I don't know of its due to the new sim or because i switched to a Samsung based rom. I should switch back to test, but I'm loving the speed of icsrewed right now.
If i had to guess i would say it's due to the sim, and if so, there should be a sticky somewhere that says to make sure your not using an older 3g sim card. Would have saved me months of aggravation.
Will report back after a few more days. In a week or so I'll switch back to cm to see if it fixes it there as well.
That's one reason I generally buy my phones at the att store (authorized reseller, but dedicated to att phones). Usually they will price match, and they know things like that. My SIM went bad when I had my captivate. Later when I upgraded to a faux G phone the att rep knew I would need a new SIM, and replaced it then, even though it was only a month old. They also knew the "3G" data plan needed to be converted to a "4G" (still unlimited) plan on their system for me to get data.
You don't get that kind of assistance when you buy at Walmart, online, etc.

Interesting, maybe next time if my data refuses to work I should bug at&t for a new Sim card. I had problems on different roms including stock rom where I had to turn off and on my data or else it will not work. But I think my modem might have played a role. Data seems fine now.

Yup just show up. They shouldn't charge. as long as your an att customer theyll take care of you. I've never heard of anyone paying for a new Sim. If you lose your Sim I've heard of them charging people, but i doubt they'll charge even then.

Am I doing something wrong or does it take an hour or more?

I am guessing that possibly a couple of million of new DNA owners are also trying to activate and the system is overloaded.
Or not?

Who knows. I got to the Corporate store at 9:45 and was the first one in at 10.....they had just received a shipment of 15 DNA's the night before, and they were ALL gone by the time I left the store an hour later (I browsed for accessories). I've NEVER seen that store this busy. At least here, the store was sold out and busy activating DNA's.
Over an hour later my DNA is still trying to activate.
Not happening.
Could it be a bad SIM that's causing this for you?
Call Verizon.
I had same issue.
Needed to turn phone off, remove SIM, have them do something on their end. Put SIM back in, turned phone on, voila
Thanks Guys!
I signed into my Verizon online account and followed a few additional steps and the phone was activated.
Removing and reinserting the sim may have done the trick but I'm not sure.
Anyway.....good to go, now.

check if it's s-off and all the good stuff?
also I went to a verizon store to just look at the phone (gonna buy it on friday somewhere else) and their phone couldn't activate either.
It takes awhile, mine took about 15min... maybe longer

It's because they have to manually change the SIM ID from a new SIM to your number. It won't activate automatically. You have to call and they'll transfer the new SIM ID to your phone number. If you just put your old SIM in it, it would do it, but they have a new micro SIM.
took them 30 mins at the store to activate it today, first the pre-installed sim wouldn't activate in their system so he couldn't process the order. so he tried a different one, that one wont activate after the phone was turned on, only recognized 3g and he took another sim activated online my account first and then plugged the sim in my phone and 10 mins later it finally activated.
Mine activated with my old SIM in under a minute.
