Hello,
I know, there are dozens of threads, articles and recommendations over XDA and internet. But I am still not sure what best practice is. Erasing Hard Disks is quite easy. In this case one deletes the whole storage from an external device. One can also delete unused storage and so on...
However, I have not really any idea how to delete the storage of my phone, especially internal storage of my Nexus 5. If i plug in the phone to my PC it is recognized as an MTP device. A tool like Eraser http://eraser.heidi.ie/ is not able to choose this destination to erase. I am also not sure how the partitions are handled in Android. Is it enough to erase securely the complete internal storage after resetting, wiping, reflashing the phone or are there still areas of interesting data around other partitions?!
Would be glad to get some advice
This is my suggestion:
1. wipe your phone and storage, data...
2. flash new ROM
3. adb shell: dd if=/dev/urandom of=/sdcard/junkfile (http://zackeryfretty.com/posts/secure-erasing-android-devices-guide-for-the-super-paranoid-seller)
4. adb shell: dd if=/dev/urandom of=/data/junkfile (http://zackeryfretty.com/posts/secure-erasing-android-devices-guide-for-the-super-paranoid-seller)
Any other suggestions?

Every now and again when I reboot the phone, my Internal Storage seems to be formatted. It's really starting to become a nuisance. I am on rooted on U4_2.1.1 - anyone else experiencing this issue?
Self bump...I found that if I reboot the phone in adb (using the reboot command) it formats my internal storage almost every time. I'm trying to isolate other causes while I am at it...
Bump, I also have this issue and it is extremely frustrating!!!
This happened to me when I rooted mine yesterday too, and this is my first post yay.

Hi,
Do a full format in Windows. Connect the phone in use storage mode to a pc, right click on the drive and select format, default settings, turn off quick format.
This happens when running Gingerbreak to root your phone.
Cheers!
So I backed up everything and am now formatting it but did I do something wrong wail using gingerbreak because I saw no where this could happen, just want to know what I did wrong.

hi,
This is what I am guessing happens: In order to get root, Gingerbreak hacks into the volume daemon (the android bit that knows about inserting and removing sdcards). So you get root but it's like you pulled the plug on your computer while your hard drive was accessing data, you need to do a full format to avoid glitches. At boot android checks volumes to make sure they are not corrupt, that they are 'checked' that they are fully synced and closed out before the power was turned off. If there are any problems, either a repair is attempted or a format is done, depending on the phone/firmware. So, after using Gingerbreak to root, there are some issues with the format of the internal memory, once you start filling it up, you get errors when it runs across a bad patch of the format. So, even though it may look like the drive has been formatted and empty, you still need to do a full format from a pc to clean up the mess. I would recommend both the internal memory and any external sd-cards be formatted properly afterward.
You'd need to talk to the author(s) of Gingerbreak to get more of a breakdown on what happens.
Cheers!
Atrix internal storage format after boot
I've the same problem using Atrix when reboot...
The internal storage will format after every reboot...
And my Atrix is new phone, that not root before...
I've try to format storage within phone format tool.
It success to stop the format after reboot.
But, I when put the sdcard into the phone, the reboot will format the phone, again...
Anyone can help////
wow thanks for the break down man really appreciate it.

I have this problem, but cannot get the computer to see the phone as drives to format. Is there any other way of doing this?

Do you have it set to Mass Storage under USB Settings when you have it connected?
Do you have the proper drivers installed?
I had this problem too. But even trying full format using pc, it still wouldn't help. I even did a full wipe on my whole phone.
Dear All,
I forced to preform a Factory Reset to my HD2.
I made backup from my contacts and mails. But forgot to backup 2 EXCEL files.
IS THERE ANY WAY TO RECOVER MY DATA?
It's critical for me.
Thanks in Advance
Not sure of any such way. Storage technology is different on phones and on disks. Still look for any software you may find for it. Or check your PC for the files.
One solution is to take those files from the PC, if you have deleted them from PC, then run file recovery on the PC, there's hardly any efficient way to recover from a Phone memory.
Recovering from My Storage (internal storage)
1. first and most important thing is, after losing your data DO NOT COPY ANYTHING to your device or it will overwrite the current data (yes, the data still exists but the pointers were deleted)
2. download Active Recovery: http://www.file-recovery.net/
3. download nueMassStorage (or any other USBtoPC app. you can find a guide for it in this thread so you can choose the most compatible software for you if nueMassStorage doesn't work): http://www.nuerom.com/BlogEngine/pag...ssStorage.aspx
4. go to start/settings/connections/USB to PC and mark Mass Storage (USB Drive) instead of Activesync
5. Soft Reset
6. connect your device to your comp. the device will be read as a storage card.
7. use active recovery to recover from Removable Disk

OK, so the DNA has support when booted into the OS for USB OTG cables/thumb drives... is it a pipe dream getting the same feature in recovery?
I've tried with both TWRP and CWM to no avail. When in the phone's OS, the mount point is located at: /storage/USB but that doesn't appear in either recoveries.
My reason for asking is simple: Considering the DNA's weakest feature is the storage space (both the relatively small amount and lack of SD Card slot), it would be beneficial for many to enable it so that when performing nand backups, ROM/Mod/Script flashes, etc. in recovery, one could actually store all of those items on the Thumb Drive rather than the internal storage. I'm finding it very painstaking to have to perform these types of items, having to copy/paste/move/delete them on and off the phone's "SDcard" folder... it's also somewhat of a risk if your phone somehow gets hosed and you didn't move your files off of the phone prior to the hosing.
HTC may not have given us more storage options (dare I say like the iPhone, where you can get 32/64gb+ space), but with USB OTG we can use a thumb drive as our sdcard.

Have you tried poking around in /dev or similar folders for the drive?
I was reading the Apps and Games section searching how to retrieve one of my games' save data, and I found it's probably on
/data/data/com.square_enix.android_googleplay.FFIII_GP
However I cannot access it normally, it's phone's internal memory. After few more searches, I came to a little idea: maybe using adb.
Then the question is, can I use adb to browse my device's internal and external storages, just like I browse through my PC using command line? (In my case I use Linux, so my terminal is Bash).
Can I copy from internal storage and write on it without root using adb? I don't want to root my device for a series of reasons...
Thanks.
No, to write to your internal storage you need root (to read it I'm not sure, try it). And yes, to explore you can use commands (btw, the commands are the same on Linux and Android).
Can I use "adb shell" to browse my phone with commands, just like I browse my Linux system with the command line?
I ask this in order to avoid being trial and error using push and pull and getting "remote object does not exist" errors, I'd need to see the actual directories and files...
I really dunno. As I said before, you can't write, but I'm not sure if you can read, so you need to try.
I've been using LineageOS on my phone for months without issues, until yesterday when I got an error message at boot: "Can't load Android system. Your data may be corrupt", etc. In the end I had to format and reinstall everything, but I'm worried that the internal flash memory could be getting defective or something.
Is there a way to check if there are "bad blocks" with the internal storage? (I mean physical issues, not the filesystem, like chkdsk or smart for hdds)
My phone is not rooted, so I've tried booting into recovery and launching adb shell, but I don't know how to proceed from there. Any help would be appreciated.
There is no way? with adb or with any other method?
