ODIN. Make sure you use the .tar image appropriate for the base that you were on.

Just make sure you use the mdk tar file. There's instructions in that thread as well. Make sure you root it soon after restoring it and freeze SDM with Titanium Backup asap. Don't want to lose that boot loader

Well I'm not really sure what your saying... I think you mean recovery?
As far as recoveries your choices are TWRP or a version of CWM.
Odin is just the tool we primarily use to flash stock firmwares back on our phones as well as certain recoveries like Philz (cwm) .
I'd say just load up the MDK stock firmware using odin.
Root the phone.
Freeze SDM
Then for sake of easiness use ROM manager or Goo from the play store to install your recovery.

Ok as long as you have the correct tar file that goes with your i9505 s4 you'll be good. You can still root using that root method and install a custom recovery.
I'm not familiar with your phone model and the builds , tar files. So just make sure your flashing the right one in odin.
If you have any doubt find the forums on here specifically for your phone and ask someone. Please.
Try switching out your USB cable and also make sure you have the Samsung USB drivers installed.

Thank you very much for that
Hello everyone, thanks for everyone's hard work. The s4 is my first smartphone and root. I used the exploit on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380325 without issue.
I'd like to update before 4.4 is pushed, since it doesn't seem rootable yet. I've read over the saferoot thread and it appears pretty straightforward.
My question is, what should I do to prepare my phone for the update and root to go smoothly? I know I have to unfreeze the update app and the bloat. I will do a full backup in titanium. Do I have to remove things like adaway and greenify? I made maps a system app in titanium to properly greenify it, do I need to revert that?
Thanks for any help!
When will the new OTA be pushed? I wanna root but I'm on MK2. Is there a way to flash any boot loader yet for mk2 or any version?

I think you can find some answers here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501
Don't EVER take an OTA. I got me S4 before the Nazi's locked the boot loader. I wont take an OTA. You can flash modems, ROM's and kernels separately so there is no reason to take the OTA and reroot. Just flash a ROM. You may have to wait an extra week or so to get the latest version, but that's better than ending up with a locked boot loader.

Thanks for the replies. In this case I appear to be more knowledgeable. My phone came with ME7, which means it already has a locked bootloader. I cannot flash custom roms, aside from using maybe safestrap. Given that I'm not interested in running that, my only option for android updates and Samsung app updates is to do an ota.
I'd really like to avoid bricking my phone, as I haven't had much luck searching this topic. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

You're easiest option will probably be backing up with titanium, using Odin to flash the newest update you're wanting, then root with saferoot and restore your backup. You won't have to worry about unfreezing anything or removing root. Everything you need is in the development section. There is also a guide in I believe the general section on the dos and don'ts of your phone and what to expect.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.
Thanks hexitnow. Silly me, I figured my answers would be in the q&a section, not the general one. I had also dismissed odin as useless as I couldn't flag anything custom, now that I researched it I see it can be used to flash a standard update as well. I have located a download for the mk2 update at androidromupdate which I will give a try later. I was going to ask in the development section, but I didn't have enough posts. Guess that's a good thing, keep suckers like me or until we know what we're doing. Thanks again.
Device: Rooted Verizon Galaxy S4 (MDK).
1. Wiped/Formatted internal storage via TWRP
2. Rebooted back into Recovery
3. Flashed new ROM
4. Flashed GAPPS
5. Rebooted phone and setup new ROM.
6. Worked great.
7. Rebooted phone
8. Stuck on Samsung Custom Screen
I'm able to boot back into recovery, just not sure what to do now. This happens every time no matter what ROM I flash. I have a feeling I effed something up by wiping internal storage. Just need to know how to fix. Thank you very much in advance.

No Odin is for all our S4's no matter what build. Here are the MDK files http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2289325
I'd say first though to update your recovery. Then I always use KToonsez Kernel myself with every ROM I run and can say I've never had an issue . I have seen a lot of problems like yours that were kernel related and one way to test that would be to flash his kernel ( KToonsez ) after the ROM you've already tried before.

Did you soft brick or are you just looking for the factory/stock image?
Nope not bricked just tired of custom ROMs and bugs...I am back on MDK but I will probabaly upgrade to newest firmware and lose the ability to have an unlocked bootloader. I have been flashing ROMs, kernels, themes, you name it...for years and I am ready to just have a stock phone that works all the time.
You can upgrade to NC5 and root via towelroot.com with no issues and get busybox and safestrap. All done with APK's, no ODIN flashing required. You DID successfully wipe and restore to factory MDK?

YES I am now on factory MDK...not even rooted or custom recovery...just like you would pick it up at a Verizon store.
Wow, that must be something new I will check that out
I downloaded the APK what exactly do I do? Update to NC5 via Samsung update and run APK?
Remove unlock icon on startup
I can't remove the unlock icon on boot and set my device status back to stock from "custom"
I used towelroot.com and SuperSu to root my phone because I was having issues with it. Now I can't put it back to return it to the store with my warranty.
I used ODIN to do a full wipe and loaded the VRUFNC5 file along with the PIT 16G file to successfully unroot, but the unlock icon still shows on the screen and the device status still shows "custom." After running the odin full wipe, I rebooted and few times and reset it, but to no avail. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172
Any assistance would be appreciated so Verizon will honor their warranty. THANKS!

I don't think freeza 's stockish NH7 will work, it will remove the twrp recovery, and replace it with stock one. Which you cannot replace without a PC.

Can't you use freeza's rom then use Flashify the recovery or Mobile Odin Pro?
Sent from my SM-N900P using Tapatalk
Now you might want to reconsider going to 4.4.4. You need to read up, there is a lot of problems with this update. The main complaint is a loss of signal strength. The other problem is that the 4.4.4 backup will have personal info in it, most people will not give that up. If you can get your hands on a backup, you will have to download it to you device, move it to your sd card twrp backup file. Now once you try and restore the backup, you will end up with a md5 mismatch error. To correct this, you need to get a root type file explorer like root explorer, then go to the backup file that failed and click on it. Now delete the nandroid.md5, and click to add a file and reinstall another nandriod.md5 file where the old one was, check permissions. Ok, try the backup file again. This time the system will ignore the empty nandroid.md5 file and install the backup.
