Hi guys,
I have the SGH-i777 and it's been a long time since I've tinkered with it, so wanted to get clarification on updating CWM before I do anything.
I'm currently running the AOKP Jellybean Rom and I have CWM 6.0.2.3 installed. I'd like to update to CM 11 and I see that this requires CWM 6.0.4.4 or higher. They've provided a link to a combination recovery/kernel from mr-cook that apparently has CWM 6.0.4.5.
My question is, how do I get that kernel onto my phone? My guess is I download it, throw it on my SD card, boot into CWM recovery and install it from there. When that's complete, I wipe data/factory reset/wipe cache/dalvik cache from recovery, then install the CM rom, GApps, and then I'm done. Is that correct?
Thanks and sorry if this is dumb. :silly:

Yes. Put that file at the root of your external card. Boot into CWM, flash that kernel, and then personally I'd reboot into recovery again. The rest of your route was fine, just wipe cache and Dalvik AFTER you flash ROM and gapps.

Great, thanks.
Out of curiosity - why do you recommend wiping cache and dalvik after flashing the rom and gapps? CM's instructions recommend to do that before flashing rom/gapps. Is it just a matter of preference?

Well, the more knowledgable folk than me on here usually list wiping dalvik/cache after ROM/Gapps, so, it makes sense to me to do what they say. It's not going to hurt anything, and actually a factory reset wipes both of those anyway, I believe.
Be sure that kernel you are loading is compatible with your current ROM, unless you have no intentions of booting back into the ROM, and only into the recovery.

Yup, looks like this isn't the case. I installed the kernel, then chose "Reboot now" from CWM's menu. It powered up, displayed the Samsung logo, and then the screen turned black. I held the power button for a bit and saw that it was off, so I tried holding the vol up + down buttons and power and booting into Download mode. (Phone had a full charge and was plugged into USB power source while doing this)
I'm now in Download mode and it says the following on the screen:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-i777
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL

What should I do now? If I remember right, this isn't a terrible screen and I can in fact power down the device and try again. How do I get back into recovery mode to continue installing the new rom?

Well, you can use this thread where @creepyncrawly walks someone through using Odin in download mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2-att/help/stuck-samsung-screen-t2803266
But do me a favor...make sure you are holding BOTH Volume + AND Volume - as well as power, and let the Samsung logo flash once, then when it comes back, let go. If it works, you'll be in Recovery, and you can try to flash your new ROM.

This was it. I wasn't timing the let go part right and I also had the device plugged in to a power source. Once I took care of that, I was able to get into recovery easily and continue the installation.
Thanks a lot!

Not sure what to do now. I went back into recovery and wiped the cache/dalvik cache again, but to no avail. I looked in the development thread and there's one post saying that I need to flash renderbroken's custom kernel after I flash the ROM and GApps. There's also a link to download renderbroken's CM kernel but I'm confused now because I also read that renderbroken doesn't update the kernels anymore, which is why they recommend the mr-cook kernel...
Any advice here? Is the renderbroken kernel the "right" one? Could I brick my phone if I try installing and reinstalling a few different kernels to get the issue solved?

Well, even Render's old kernel would work, but, no, he hasn't updated in a long time. You can use Rogersb's kernel (found here: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=15966), but specifically which ROM are you trying to install?

I favor TWRP, but if you are comfortable with CWM, grab that one, and flash it after you flash your ROM. I'd factory reset again first, then wipe cache/dalvik after.
I will also say this...that ROM you are installing is a fairly old version...you might consider updating to something a bit newer.

Resurrection Remix (not updated anymore, but an awesome ROM)

Okay so I should do it like this... factory reset, flash the ROM again, flash this new kernel I'm downloading now, wipe cache/dalvik. Yes? And here's another probably stupid question. the best stock based rom i have come across is this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998701&highlight=phenom
You don't need to flash a stock rom with Odin and your PC, just use CWM. Just follow the instructions on the page, i've pasted them below for your convenience.
***COMING FROM A DIFFERENT ROM A FULL WIPE IS RECOMMENDED***
***FULL WIPE***
MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP
Wipe data/factory reset in recovery
Wipe Cache & Davilk Cache
Flash Rom in CWM
Reboot
[EDIT] "can I just flash as usual using a ROM manager from the phone being turned on" - yes.

You have to do a megawipe if coming back from 4.2 roms, as these roms change the folder structure of internal storage. Dont forget to backup everything in your internal storage or you will lose them.
Many others have faced problems later by not doing a megawipe.
lefttobleed - pardon my ignorance, can this be done within the ROM manager or is it worth going into recovery to do this? I don't have my phone for a couple of days so I can't currently check settings.
Thanks

you have to go into recovery and flash the megawipe aroma file. sorry i dont remember the link for the file. Search for it.
Please note that i am not familiar with rom manager so i dont know whether this can be done with rom manager. I always flash through recovery.
Edit: Please dont try this through rom manager... i feel something might go really wrong.
I will be getting a Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 tomorrow and I am interested in installing the PACMAN ROM
However, the instructions are not clear for me since I am new to all this. I've downloaded the roms, gapps and kernal and now the instructions say to:
'Put the files on your device
Reboot into recovery
Wipe dalvik cache
Install the zips (or do adb sideload if you want)
Reboot'
Since I have no experience with android devices, I am not sure how to do these steps. I've tried searching on Youtube but there aren't any tutorials for SGP's. I am aware that I need to do a full wipe since I am going from GB to JB (so I need to delete data, dalvik, system and dbdata). It also says to do a backup if anything goes wrong, which I am not too sure how to do as well.
If someone could explain these instructions clearly to me, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

put your device in download mode (hold down power and volume down) and flash entropy's kernel with odin.
then you will have clockworkmod recovery, which you can boot into by holding power and volume up.
in clockworkmod, you can make a backup, wipe data, and install the rest of the stuff.
you could even do all of this without ever booting up the stock rom.
This is what I do/did...
I used this tutorial to flash CWM and root
http://m.androidauthority.com/galaxy-player-5-0-android-2-3-6-root-clockworkmod-recovery-116474/
Download SuperOneClick and
Download Odin. Follow tutorial.
Odin can be used to flash ROMs or kernels and to flash CWM.
Download the Pacman ROM and a kernel and put it on your External SD card.
Use ROM Manager from the play store to reboot into Recovery mode (easiest way) or volume up and power button at the same time as the Samsung flashes after you first boot your device.
From recovery mode you can wipe dalvik cache etc, but if this is a new device, you shouldn't have to factory reset or wipe cache (I think) If you're buying a used device, wipe and reset.
You're in recovery mode still, navigate to-
"Load zip from external SD card" and select it. Navigate to the Pacman zip and select it.
You navigate using the volume up and down buttons and select using the power button.
Navigate back to main screen in recovery mode and select Reboot System.
Do the same thing to flash a kernel. If the kernel has clockwork mod integrated, load the kernel first.
I use Xplore to move files around, it's quick and easy.
The reason ppl tell you to back up any data is, they have data they want to keep. If this is a new device, you don't have anything worth saving, such as contacts apps etc.

what exactly did you do in cwm?
did you install pac rom?
if not, try installing (using install zip from sdcard) it directly over gb, after doing a full wipe.
also install gapps the same way

then copy a cm9 rom zip over (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679957)
you should be fine

Yeah it sucks that Samsung made different devices for different regions...Makes no sense..
But yeah, I installed CM9 and when I selected to reboot my phone from the actual ROM it said 'Rebooting...' and now its been like this for 30mins or so... :| I guess I'll have to wait for the battery to drain or something, but as soon as it does I'll wipe data, etc and install PACMAN with the new kernel and gapps. Sucks that you can't take the battery out the phone, I don't think the phone is actually gonna reboot.
EDIT: NEVERMIND, I JUST SAW ONLINE THAT YOU CAN SWITCH IT OFF BY HOLDING DOWN THE POWER BUTTON AND HOME BUTTON...Yeah I'm totally new to Android and Samsung xD
Or you could hold the power and volume up buttons to go into Recovery mode and reboot from there.

hi i have the cyanogenmod 10 build from july 1st 2013.
its installed with the clockwork mod
even put the patch in during clockwork mod
and the google apps during clockwork mod.
the biggest issue im having is that when i click the camera it says no external storage avaiable and to insert an sd card before using the camera.
i cant transfer any pictures to my phone or files.
if i plug the phone into my computer it says turn usb storage on and i try that but cant get into the phones files to fix what i need.
i also can do a mtp mode but it only shows whats on the micro sd card that is it.
i really want to use my phone but this issue is tough to fix.?
what can i do?
What version of cm are you running your title says 10.1 but your post says 10 which one is it? Did you read the op on the Rom. Mainly the what works and what doesn't? Not sure if that's the cm but extsd is broke on one of them I think.
I'm running cm10.1 20130701, unofficial. And my camera works. If this is the cm your on try a full wipe and reflash
I.e. wipe data
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik
Then reflash

get that zip again

unzip the 7.01 build and copy that boot and run the fastboot devices
go in with clockwork mod
clean wipe data
clea wipe cache
battery status
delvik cache
format data
format cache
format sd ext
format sd card
all that
then install 7.01 build from zip
install patch from zip
install camera from 4.3 libs zip
and then what? u said something about reflashing?
K your out of my knowledge. I've never had to unzip and flash anything also I'm not sure what patch your talking about. So rather than doing what I said post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2217075

Did you flash the camera lib on your current Rom? If so why? If it didn't directly say that in the instructions for that Rom that may have broke your camera. Also why are you using fast boot, then cwm. What are you using fastboot for?
For the Rom I linked I don't believe you need a patch I haven't read anything about it I didn't need one. If you want to switch to 4ext go to 4ext.net and download recovery updater, it will flag 4ext for you then do exactly this
Wipe data factory reset
Wipe cache /dalvik
Install from zip
Flash the Rom
Install from zip
Flash the gapps package. Thus Rom is JB make sure you have the JB gapps. If not Google it

flash the rom means what again? i thought flash the rom means to install it from zip.
Yeah that's what it means. I was referring to the options you select in recovery. Make sense? In that post though I was sharp talking about flashing a recovery if you wanted that's different I put some basic instructions in there
Here's one guide on flashing 4ext recovery

where did u get your google apps?
http://goo.im/gapps (wrong link sorry)
Can't post within five minutes
Sorry
Download the one for cm10.1 bookmark the page in case you need a different one later on in life.
Honestly a simple Google search for gapps got that page in two seconds. No one will help you in here if you ask for everything. You've ask me for a link to everything I've said. So I have to spend my time to find your link. I don't mind helping but when all you have to do it search you need to do it yourself

i did what u said and got stuck with 4ext starting over and over and over again
so i switched back to clockwork mod and will see what happens.
i hope your right because u have a 7.01 build and no issues and i cant seem to get past this.
You didn't answer my question what sd card won't mount? And before you stay just doing things research your problem if 4ext went find sd you should have Googled that issue before you went back to cwm, jumping without knowing is what's going to Mess things up. So stop changing things and do some research.

What do you mean starting over and over. In the previous post you said it was working but couldn't mount sd. What happened to make it go from working to boot looping. Exactly what did you do? How far does it go before restarting? Is the recovery that's bootlooping or the Rom? I need way more info than your posting

What recovery finally worked for you? And if everything is running well make a backup before you start tweaking it that way if something goes wrong you can just restore your backup instead of having to stay over from scratch
Personally
I make a backup after a clean install then after I restore my apps then after mods then final. And I delete the post one when I have a working newer one. That way my sd isn't full of backups

I have a Galaxy S2 intl version. I was on carbon rom with siyah kernel. All was fine then suddenly it force reboots. but while rebooting it just didn't happen. Nothing happened. The screen logo just flashes for a second and then disappears, and then nothing happens. I tried entering the recovery mode, but doesn't enter the recovery mode. The download mode is working just fine. So I flashed a custom rom with siyah kernel using ODIN, hoping it would help, but nothing seems to happen though both rom and kernel are flashing perfectly alright! Please help me recover my phone guys. Would be extremely grateful, please!
Don't use siyah on custom roms. Flash Dorimanx 9.xx through odin . Recovery should now work. Go into recovery and factory reset clear the caches and reboot. Should work fine after this.
Remember
Dorimanx 8.xx is for stock and custom rom
Dorimanx9.xx is for custom only.

Okay so I left my phone overnight, with the battery pulled out. I had flashed a stock rom before going to sleep. And i woke up and just put the battery back in to flash Dorimanx, and, something happened. The phone entered recovery mode :cyclops: I had been trying to get in the damn thing for the whole day yesterday, and today it happened, so i did as you said, wiping all that, and rebooted the phone. In a little odd fashion though, but it booted up and the setup process started, and it's working fine now. So, now I'm on a custom rom JB 4.1.2 and siyah kernel. I want a stable 4.3 on my phone. What can I do, sir? I dont wanna run into trouble again, so what would be a safe way?

I am installing the Carbon Rom, JB 4.3 as I already have a copy of it on my phone, and I'm doing it with the same previous kernel on it, ie, Siyah-s2-v5.0.1. Should this create a problem?
Yes it will. DONT USE SIYAH. Use dorimanx 9.xx for any custom rom. Including carbon rom

Okay now I'm really sorry it's starting to bug you but my phone seems to develop new problems every time I reboot. Now, I havent changed anything, On a stock rom with siyah kernel. and i rebooted, and stuck again! I am able to enter recovery mode though (CWM recovery) and download mode also. BUT, now what happens when I boot is, the samsung logo shows with the triangle and, the boot tune plays but there's nothing on the screen, it's just black, and a few secs later, it gives a small vibration, all still with the phone screen black. Later i get to know that my phone has apparently turned on, but the screen is not showing anything. I called my cell and to my surprise it rings meaning its actually ON!! Why is the screen not ON then?? Please help, kind sir! Also if you could provide me with links to the required kernels/roms or whatever else required. Eagerly awaiting your saviour reply! :crying:
You need to go bk to stock with Odin. Test and see if it still happened with fully stock rom and kernel.

Hey, problem solved now, dont know what it was though! What i did was flash the Carbon rom with siyah, and it booted and then i flashed dorimanx and its working fine now. But the gapps package is reacting weirdly. I flashed it perfectly and when i reboot, it says "Google + stopped working" and then i check the app menu and there's no google apps whatsoever. http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip I then installed play store apk and it opened up and looked fine but then that is all it did! It won't download anything. What shall I do?
Full wipe. So format
Data
System
Preload
Cache
Dalvik cache
Then flash
Rom and gapps
Then flash dori
Then reboot

I did everything! I never got the option to format preload though. Everything else went smooth. Rebooted. Same problem persists.
Go bk to recovery and factory reset. Also maybe if that don't work redownload gapps and try again. May have curupt gapps.

What nightly of carbon are you on?
Edit: also format pre load must be there? Mounts and storage. under format system I think.

How do I check to tell which nightly I am on? And the first time I had done the full format, i had preload, and while i foramtted that, it gave me some error saying it couldnt do so. I completed the procedure anyways, availing no success. So, repeated it second time and found no preload option. The recovery menu seems to have changed. Is it a matter of concern? I am on a CWM recovery, apparently. and i found the preload option. tried. it says "Error foramtting /preload" how should i proceed?
Okay this is what I'm using "CARBON-JB-NIGHTLY-20131018-0102-i9100" Please help! I've run into more problems than I had anticipated! I am so worried. What should I do now?

Hi,
When i woke up this morning my phone was attempting to boot, but was stuck on my boot animation. So i pulled out the battery and rebooted, since then it has been turning on for a couple mins than rebooting the phone its self is slightly warmer than usual, but it has been hotter before. I have attempted to back up my data using cwm, but the reboot still happens, im unsure if its on the same file that causes the reboot. Im trying to back it up to completely wipe it and see if that makes a difference.
I would be grateful for any help in the matter.

Hi,
i would boot into CWM or TWRP and then i would do a wipe cache / dalvik, and flash your "rom.zip" from internal or external sd card. If that does not work then do a factory reset and flash "rom.zip". If the problem still exists what i do not hope for you, then you have to wipe all your data without doing a nandroid backup and then flashing again. Do you have a stock rom installed or what rom do you have and what kind of kernel?
But try to flash your rom and kernel again . Hope it will help your "Diva" ?!
Sounds to me ur power button is stuck.

No i meant you should flash your rom.zip, but when you have istalled a stock rom then you dont have a zip file of it on your sd-card, which you can flash. But a normal odin flash of your stock will solve your problem, and then you can do a custom nandroid backup in CWM (EFS, DATA partition etc). I hope odin will do a complete delete of your /system, /data/media, /data partition. But try it

We should do a full wipe of your phone.....
1. Load a rom xyz.zip file on your external sd card (i would recommend not a stock rom)
2. Reboot into CWM (what version do you have ??? etc. It is very important for your new rom what you want to install instep 6)
3. Do a full wipe (wipe cache / wipe dalvik cache)
4. Factory Reset
5. Delete /data and /data/media i mean everything (so your internal sd card has to be empty and empty)
6. Install zip file from sdcard1 (external sd card)
so a new rom will be flashed dont forget it, its your phone
7. REBOOT
8. Now you have a newly fresh installed ROM on your S3 :good::laugh:
