[Q] LG screen timeout like Samsung - Verizon LG G3

Does the LG G3 have a "smart stay" screen off option like Samsung has? If not, that may take awhile to get used to. I used my wifes s4 to read an article and she didn't have it turned on and I was going nuts with it turning off all of the time so I had to change it. Is there an app that does it that I could download if the G3 doesn't have something like that?

Yes it does, it's called smart screen.
Never really used it before, always seemed silly to me. May have to try it out!

That is great news. It's one of those features after having it, I wouldn't buy anything without it.

It does have one, and to be honest, I think it works a lot better than Samsung.

It does seem to pick up when I'm looking at the screen better than my old gs4.

Not bye but...it was a good run

Well as you can see by the signature what I upgraded to, I had really high hopes for the photon, I praised that thing daily until the Motorola ics/bootloader lock debacle happened, so I need to get it fixed anyway which I will still do, but I think for my photon and Motorola, the towel has finally been thrown in, I'll always keep tabs on the development if it still happens and maybe one day go back to that little beast

I went to the Note II, also. Amazing how small the Photon's screen looks now!

FYI

AT&T added the HTC One to their displays for today's launch of the HTC First. Just fyi you should be able to go to any AT&T store starting today and get hands on time with the One a full week before launch!
Btw, huge Samsung addict, but the One is by far the sexiest phone I've ever held...definitely picking one up next week.

Thanks for the heads up. Gonna check my local store during lunch.
Will be trying if it's still available. Thank you
I checked a store out. There it is, finally, after all the amazing reviews and everything I have consumed on the web about it and all the excitement ... I played with it for a while. After everything I had read.l which set such high expectations... And its just a phone!!
I'm coming from a Note 2. This phone felt very small to me...!

I have a Note 2 as well, and a grip case and all that so my Note 2 definitely feels comfortable to hold so I'm not giving it up until the S4 comes out but I'm still gonna pick up a One...maybe because I got to take it out the box so unconsciously I felt possessive about it lol but I really liked the One a lot...

Any phone after using the Note will look and feel small
I get you. I am sure to own both. Often when I move to a new device it takes a few days to get comfortable... And then no looking back. But I do like the big screen on the note.
Anyway I am sure they have a winner on their hands

ya it looks like the same sticker that was on the ONE x last year
Went to an AT&T store to assess the situation. Full disclosure: I pre-ordered the 32GB unlocked edition with AT&T LTE support, not AT&T's carrier branded edition.
There was only a single One on display and I didn't see any advertising for it. There was a ton of HTC First advertising and 5 of those were on display, but it's already for sale. Maybe AT&T will step things up when the One is actually for sale.
It's a beautiful device, as expected. Pictures don't give you an idea of how thin it actually looks in person.
The display unit did have tiny gaps on the top and bottom edges between the polycarbonate and the front aluminum speaker grills. It wouldn't bother me, but people have been calling this an issue and apparently it's not fixed on the AT&T version.
There are quite a few AT&T apps pre-installed. They're organized into a single folder in the app drawer by default, which is nice. None of the ones I checked could be uninstalled, but they could be disabled.
There is an ugly NFC icon in the status bar placed there by AT&T. Apparently AT&T is throwing that on all of their Android phones with NFC these days.
AT&T cloud contact sync is built into the phone and contacts apps. It annoyed me multiple times while I was just tyring to see the apps.
An ugly notification shows up when an AT&T hotspot is nearby. You can probably disable that, but I didn't check.
AT&T's hideous browser bar is built into the default browser and turned on by default. It can be disabled, thankfully.
The messaging app includes support for group texting, though it's disabled by default, and it also has different themes you can choose from. Group messaging is nice to see considering it wasn't added to stock Android until 4.2 and the One doesn't have 4.2 yet.
Chrome v18 is included. This makes me happy because I like the way it performs better than the latest versions of Chrome, though I'll probably use the stock HTC browser anyways.
Can't wait to get mine. Come to papa!!!

Great stuff, thanks! I checked for Group Messaging, too, and was thrilled to see it included. This means I won't have to put GO SMS on the phone, and one less "GO" app is always a good thing in my book...

[Q] Considering getting this phone

I need an extra push, I'm hoping to find it here.
I'm coming from a Galaxy S2. There are two things I will have to live without, can anyone tell me if I should be worried?
1. The lack of a menu and search button.
2. Not having the ability to take out the battery.
On another note, I was wondering if someone could confirm if it's possible to remove the HTC Sense? The first thing I plan on doing is rooting it and removing basically any software HTC and AT&T add. One other question.. does anyone know if the IR can be setup to use custom commands, or if that's something we have to wait for developers?
I don't have much to add on here except the search button is so two years ago. No need to have that button there with the advent of long pressing and double tapping.

Most people that cry about batteries are usually closet Samsung fanboys. The ability to "take out the battery" is a bit overrated. Sorry but I don't have any need to add a brick to the back of my phone just so I can show off some "amazing battery stats"

Actually it's nice to have a search button where if I'm in the app drawer I can tap that and search for an app. Or if I'm on the home screen it opens google now. Or on a browser, it's a quick search button. You get the idea. What's the alternative now? How do you open Google Now or search for apps quickly?

I hate the way the S4 looks, and the S3. The huge rounded corners are a big turn off. I would end up getting that if I can't put up with the limitations the one has to offer.

Actually, I don't care about that.. I can optimize android to get what I need out of it. But I do like the ability to replace it if it dies or degrades in performance in a year from now, or say.. my phone is frozen, taking out the battery is often the fastest way to turn the damn thing off. Most of my stuff is in the cloud now, so I don't see me needing to replace my SD card. But it has occationally come in handy when I want to just pop it into my laptop to transfer some large files. I'm going to miss that.
I'm usually a Samsung guy but the one is amazing. We complain about the battery being no good over time and needing the ability to swap out. However, we get the next best thing after a year or so of use then sell the current device. The one is good. I haven't even rooted yet. I can wait until we get a stock RUU.

If I have any issues with the battery I am calling Squaretrade and getting a replacement. That's the great thing about having insurance even though I am not even sure If I will be using this device for the full 2 years. Also, if you hold the power button down for 10 seconds its just like pulling the battery, but much faster.
I came from having a Galaxy SIII on Verizon, switched to ATT with a Galaxy SII Skyrocket and am now a happy camper with my One. The biggest hurdle was getting over not having the same capacitive buttons and how much faster the One is.
By no means am I a heavy user but I am sitting here with 60% battery going on just over 8 hours.
Lol I love being to put a beastly 7000 mah battery in my phone to get 3 days of battery. But if I can't, it isn't that big of a deal. Btw I'm not a Samsung fan boy, I'm a fan of whatever is the best.

On a custom rom you can map the other buttons to do a menu and maybe even a search (I'm not sure)
Holding power+vol up and down simulates pulling the battery
Right now there is not a way to remove sense, you can use 3rd party launchers for now. They are working on pure android ROMs and development will be GREAT on this device. I have owned a S2 and played with the One and the One is SWEET. (I'm still waiting for my black to arrive). I have a HTC One XL and think it is MUCH better than my S2. Just get it, You will love it. Or wait for development to grow a little to give you all those features

Shattered my S4 Screen

basically as the title says... I dropped my phone and shattered the screen at the top and bottom corners... it's still operable at the moment but it'll get worse over time. I have an upgrade available on my account that I can use or I could enter the Verizon edge program... I really don't know what i should do. it's obvious the edge program is only useful if I upgrade every ~12 months and I have a tendency to switch phones quite often but with a newborn son I may lose interest in upgrading/getting new phones so much... I'm mostly looking at the HTC M8 only because ive had the galaxy for a while and im ready for something other than touchwiz. use upgrade, pay 250 and sign another 2 year contract or enter Verizon edge program and pay nothing now and be able to upgrade again in a year... opinions?

any opinion on edge vs upgrade on 2 year contract? I was fortunate enough to keep my bootloader unlocked on my s4 too but it's still restricted development.
There's a ton of ROMs for an MDK s4. With all the unified AOSP ROMs now and the TW patches that allow for almost any Int'l ROMs I don't think there's ever been as many options as now. Just saying that's all. The M8 is cool too though

Edge is a huge waste of money. Over 2 years you spend approximately $1,100 more than you would by just using your one subsidized upgrade and buying/selling your phones off contract. I can find a breakdown I did with somebody else on here to explain the BS that is Edge.

lol I'd just order a new glass off Amazon for $20.00 but that's just me.
I've done it like 3 times on the S4 and 5-6 times on the S3.
I'm the IT guy for my company so I fix a lot of phones.
It takes patience but there are really good youtube videos out there showing how it's done.
I've got it down to about 45 minutes now.
If you have the skill, you can get new screen and digitizer for $150. That's what I did. There a lot of Youtube videos that shows how.
Yeah I thought about replacing it myself, I know I can... I think I'm just using it as an excuse to change phones ?
I do have the gpe ROM installed, actually love it. I'm just really intrigued by the build quality of the m8.

The new crop of phones are only incremental upgrades over the S4.
I'd say, fix your phone. Wait. Get something later toward the end of the year maybe.
For me, it's all full price anyway.
I have unlimited that I'm not giving it up until they take it.
I am about to replace a Galaxy S4's outer glass, just as many others have. The replacement parts are very cheap and atop of that you can take the phone from beat to mint if you put the time in. The outer trim (chrome) is what I want to replace as well but thats a tad more difficult I imagine. Anyway my advice on screen removal is to use a piece of clear tape on the cracked glass before using the heat gun. This will make removal easier and helps to prevent scratches or broken LCD/Digitizer.
last 2 that broke in my house I made profit fixing
I broke mine don't know how but I got a used one off of craigslist its easy to talk people down in price, I just swapped my mobo iin to that and put the new phones mobo in the broken one and sold the broken but still working one for 200 made a 50 dollar profit.
did the same when my sons friend broke my sons s4..

What ever phone you get, use a downloaded interface... such as Nova Prime. Yeah, it'll cost a few bucks to get into it, but you buy it once and then you use it on every phone you have after that. Why?
A> You learn one interface really really well. This means that over the years you become more comfortable and familiar with it.
B> It is heavily customizable so if you get tired of it, just change the way it looks. This can be kind of daunting if you want to completely customize it the moment you install it, but you don't have to. For me, the most important things were being able to change font sizes, icon sizes and icon spacing. This means I can see more of my background and less of my icons in the way. I make the screen fit me, not the other way around.
C> Once you have it set the way you love it, you wind up upgrading to a new phone... no big deal, you pop in your micro sd card or copy over a directory and you can restore your backed up launcher settings to the new phone. Pretty easy. Then the new phone looks and works much like the old phone did.
D> The customizations on something like Nova Launcher Prime are sick. You can change all the effects and it runs really smooth on my phones over the years. There are other really great launchers out there. I've tried a bunch of them, but nowhere near all of the big ones... so try something different. I stopped trying them when I got Nova Launcher Prime on a "Deal of the day" and I don't regret it.
I've tried using the stock launcher on the last three phones I've had and in 10 minutes I'm downloading Nova and putting it back on when I upgrade. Stock launchers have gotten better, but they are far behind the best custom launchers out there.
Thumbstarrepair.com fixed my wife's S4 for $50. Does it the correct way using LOCA and not cheap tape.

Ya those are the ones. Don't know why they would take those out.
Well that's silly. Does Tasker work without root in this situation?
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
Haven't tried that. There was a fix for the g4 where you download quickshortcutmaker on the playstore and you could re-enable it that way but that didn't work this time around.
I'm on the Verizon G6 and they did in fact remove Smart Settings. I'm not surprised to see them do this. I am tempted to get upset at this, then I think, how much functionality would having those settings really bring me and how much would I really use them. I know that tasker and other apps such as Macro Droid will replicate these things. I found out how to replicate them on my G4 and I rarely used them nor found them super helpful.
Ya I know it sucks and I probably wouldn't use that much either but I like to have the option.
http://www.androidcentral.com/here-are-things-verizon-lg-g4-doesnt-have-other-variants-do
Here are the features removed from the LG G4 a couple of years ago. It would be useful to know what Verizon disabled in the LG G6 before purchasing carrier version or waiting for unlocked version.
Verizon has a (bad) and long history of modifying phones they sale. Same thing happens to Samsung's devices. My S7 Edge didn't have a few features Samsung had on their international model. Not really surprising to see they screwed up the G6 as well
