Best PMA Charger for AT&T G3 - G3 Accessories

I picked up a Duracell dual Powermat pad and the official circle case from AT&T.
The Powermat seems to work with the official case, but you have to set it on there just right for it to charge and stay charging. There's a magnet in the pad that feels like it is trying to pull the back cover into the right location, but it does not put it into perfect alignment. It pulls it into the pad, but it doesn't really provide a lot of value other than a false sense of accomplishment.
I often have to lift and attempt to reset the wireless power connection to get it to actually start to charge. Also, you have to orient the phone off center where the bottom just barely hangs over the bottom edge and the top hangs generously over the top edge, which is hard to intuitively gauge.
Is there a better PMA mat that allows for a more logically centered set down? The Duracell makes the noise that it is charging when I put the phone on it, then most times, I notice the phone is not actually charging.

I'm not having these issues with my Duracells. They work fine. I did have an issue last night where wirelessly they charge to a full battery but cut off and will not charge again until the phone drops well below 99%. I am guessing this is a protection mode. Also, if you want to stop the sound, you can crack the powermat open and just pull out the little speaker inside. I did this on the one I keep next to my bed.

Are you using the dual or the single charger?

Yep. Just pull back the sticky film on the bottom about a half inch and you will see the screws. Take those out and the top pops off. You have some sticky tape inside holding it together so that will pop but it doesn't break anything. Then just pull the speaker out. Its also stuck with tape. I didn;t bother to un-solder mine, I just pulled them loose. Both pads perform fine not with no sound. You have the LEDs that tell you if you are connected similar to all the Qi pads I have tried.

My problem ended up being the phone itself. A few days later, it stopped charging wireless completely. It would charge via the USB still. I got my Circle Case exchanged with no luck. I went back and swapped out the phone, and it has been working fine ever since. The problems I was having of it being flaky on the Powermat are gone.

[Q] Damage to Z Ultra from Magnetic Charger?

Hey, I just got my Z Ultra less than a week ago and I purchased http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JEN5S6A/
I figured it would be easier to use then undoing the charging flap every time.
When I was trying the tip out without being connected to the charger I noticed the magnet was strong but didn't sit in the connector properly..
After looking at some other magnetic chargers online I saw some of them being plugged in upside down so I tried that and it sat in the port better.
When the phone was extremely low on batter (4 percent) I plugged the charger into the tip and put it on upside down. At first the phone restarted so I thought hmm thats weird and unplugged it, I then tried again and made sure it sat in the port snug and my phone turned off and wouldnt turn on again.. After about 15 minutes of the phone charging with no sign of led or charging symbol I found online to try the reset button and it finally turned on. I did some searching online and found out that the port isn't really meant for a magnetic charger but a dock and what I experienced was inverse connection.
So i am wondering if this could have possibly damaged the phone or battery in any way? I dont know if my battery life has been affected or stayed the same as it was the second day of having the phone..
Sorry for the long rant but I would appreciate any input. Thanks
You're not the first one to do a "reverse charging", and I believe that it will or can damage your device. The magnetic connector is made for the Sony DK30 dock, which costs around $30.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EC...200_QL40&qid=1404599682&sr=8-1#ref=mp_s_a_1_1
The thing with using accessories like you do, is that it's not a genuine product by Sony, so any damage done by say, a no-name charger like you're using, won't be covered by the warranty. If your Ultra catches fire in the middle of the night and you're using a " fake" charger, well tough luck. Sony won't cover that.
I would use a "fake" charger if the Ultra had a removable battery, in case it got damaged, but it doesn't, so you're really playing with fire right now.
Well to be honest I did not know the charger wasn't made for that until I experienced that. I've ordered the dk30 dock online as the sony store near me did not carry it but was wondering if I should be concerned with what already happened and get my phone swapped as it's still within return policy..?

i bought a aftermarket magnetic charging cable, plugged reversely and same as yours, couldnt turn on until i pressed the reset button to make the led lit when charging, waited a few hours plugged to the usb sony charger, led turned out normal. just when i thought it was fine again i noticed whenever i turned it off it turned itself on again and boot loop until i pressed the reset button to make it really off, plus, when it hit 15% battery life on the indicator on notification bar, it dropped 2% per second, yes, per second, and phone died. returned it and waiting for replacement.
see if yours has those symptoms, i think reverse charging does damage to the battery or the phone, see the shape of the tips of the charging port different, there may be a reason behind it.
edit: the reason i tried plugging the magnetic cable reversely was while i plugged it in normal direction, it showed its charging while it wasnt, thats y, and it was a cheap aftermarket one, i ended up buying a official dk30 from sony store

I have a Magnetic Charger - and I too experienced the shut down when I tried it upside down once.
I'm using a generic charger and haven't experienced any issues for months - just make sure to use it correctly.
This thread has me worried now though haha.

Im sure there has been one that the charger was the wrong polarity I think, and another where it was misused, that ended up with near dead batteries
I accidentally connected the charger in reverse, well the port is now dead. The phone thinks it's charging but the charger light never comes on and GSAM shows no increase in charge. At least the USB port still works.

Thank you very much for the warning. After reading this thread I was thinking that Sony should have keyed the connector to only plug in one orientation. I looked at my magnetic charger and that is indeed the case. One opening is round and one is oval, so the round opening will not fit over the oval contact on the phone. I guess the issue is the quality of the magnetic charger cable - a cheap one still may allow contact. The key is that the contacts on the cable are recessed into the housing so that the housing must fit over the posts on the phone before contact is made.
why in the name of all that is holy does the connector even allow for being plugged in the wrong way???
Cheap Chineese knockoffs. JUST DON'T BUY THEM.
Sony should have just gone with induction charging but oh well. As cheap as the GPe is right now, I'll just buy another one.

I just found this thread after plugging in my magnetic adapter in backwards. I have been using it for almost 6 months with no problem, and then this past Friday, I sat down at my desk and grabbed the charger and stuck it on without looking, and the phone shut off. You know the rest, now the magnetic port is done, and the screen will either keep coming back on while charging, or shut off and not come back on unless I force it off with Power + Vol + key. This sucks. I don't think I will get another Sony since it was so easy to kill it. Great big screen though, I will miss it.

You're right, it was some cheap Chinese magnetic adapter, and true, I can't blame Sony for that. I guess I have gotten accustomed to buying any cheap microUSB cable or even headphone I can find, and using it on my phone without a second thought. I think that's why all of us who have messed up our phones with these bad magnetic adapters didn't stop to think we were putting our phone at risk. It was just another cheap accessory. I guess I have learned my lesson to be more careful what I stick into my next phone.
Be careful of where you purchase the dock as well; I purchased the DK 30 dock on eBay, and after about a month, started having problems charging. One day, it wouldn't charge on the dock at all.
Saw that the right pin in the dock has one of the plastic surrounds which broke off, which I assume is the culprit of the problem.
So off I went, this time Amazon, to order another dock, which works, using it now to charge my mobile phone.

Fire!
I almost killed my phone! Aside from upside-down, I was using an apple 2.4a charger - it burned the side out of the phone, and melted the cable right off the connector - in fact - the melting-off probably saved me - house filled with smoke etc. It did the mad re-start loop thing for about half an hour (my guess - there's a temp sensor in there which was tripping our because of the heat), but to my amazement, even with the side melted to death, the phone now still seems to work OK for me (probably not including the "waterproof" feature anymore).
Was super lucky it didn't burn the house down. What kind of idiot manufacturer doesn't put a polarity bridge on their reversable socket!?!?!?!

Just to echo all of the previous posters - had the same issue as well.
My experience played out as follows:
* Got phone - over joyed since recently price reductions for such a high quality product meant approx USD290.
* Realise the flaps are a bit annoying so after 1 week; get magnetic charger. Seems to work at office
* Get another for home. After try two times; connect but not charge. connect in reverse. Phone shuts off immediately.
* PANICK - for next 30 minutes try the little red button, power switch + (combinations). Nothing helps
* eventually just plug into USB port and pray. After another 20 minutes get blinking red LED. But still doesn't boot
* another 20 minutes ago- solid LED; it boots! still at original percentage battery.
* now have strange problem - without anything plugged in; the phone can't boot properly, get repated SONY logo followed by power off and loop. CPU gets hot.
* If plug in USB - get styled battery icon; and when booting... IT WORKS.
* If close to fully charge (>90%) screen keeps on activating now when charging.
* to rub salt in the wound; the original magnetic charger at work doesn't seem to charge anymore (ie magnetic charger port dead).
Since it is a 3 week old phone, have lots of mixed feelings now. It was REALLY great purchase for the price and happy with it at first. but now I feel like I have a damaged product. feel quite upset.
I know buying cheap USB charger was the problem; but for SONY to have something so critical and vulnerable makes me wary as well. Initlally happy with phone (came from Galaxy Note camp) but now just wary of the phones.

I am facing the same problem. My magnetic charging port is now dead ( charging led lights up but the doesn't charged the battery. battery level goes down ). I have changed the magnetic charging port, but still behaves the same. Do you think changing the charging flex will make it work ? because if the magnetic charging port is damaged from motherboard itself, then there is no point changing the flex...
Appreciate your reply.
Thanks !

Magnetic Chargers

I've been looking for a charger that attaches to the side dock on the Z2. I bought one on EBay very cheap but the charging from seems to connect then disconnect all the time. I guess that's what I get for buying a cheap unit. Is there a good one that will charge the Z2 properly? I'm sure the flap to the micro usb is going to come off sooner or later so I'd rather use the magnetic one.
I too am looking for this. What eBay one did you buy? Don't want to accidentally buy a cheap one..

I'm happy with 'kwmobile' charger bought on amazon.de, especially I like the fact that magnet is not too strong therefore I don't have a fear that magnetic port will fall out. I hope so ... :fingers-crossed:

I bought a dirt cheap one from ebay too, works fine although the magnets aren't very strong so the amount of time I spend fiddling to get it to latch on I may as well use a micro usb!

Best I've come across, a bit more expensive though.
It fits very snugly over the charging port, so if you use case this cable might not go well with it.

I've heard that, I got a free app called timely and it works great, with smart connect it automatically goes into silent + opens timely when I dock.
Word of warning with magnetic chargers, don't be stupid like me and turn the charger the other way around to see if it connects better, you will end up shorting something inside your phone and you will have to RMA your device

I have a magnetic charging cable and did this drunkly one night, woke up to find the phone turned off and SUPER HOT. Like almost burning point, freaking out I quickly removed the cable and tried turning it on but it wouldn't power up.
After 2 minutes of having a mild heart-attack I used my USB charging cable and connected it once it cooled down and within a minute it powered back up and started charging. After a few minutes of doing this I booted up the phone and the battery was on 1%

upon close inspection, the charging pins on the magnetic charging port are different in size to prevent plugging it backwards.
for those of you who were able to plug it in backwards, is the magnetic charger a sony accessory? or aftermarket?
I bought the magnector x and holy moly does it charge fast...and the connection is solid and it snaps in place with ease...magnet very strong...only problem is it doesn't work with my roxfit gel shell case even though it has the cutout for the magnetic port...so either I stick with using my cheap Chinese made magnetic charger that doesn't always make a solid connection and charges rather slow but works with my case or buy the case-mate barely there case which is the only other case I can see that would work with the magnector x...

Qi Car Charger

Has anyone purchased/used one yet? I am looking at getting one, but haven't yet, mostly because I haven't found one that I am sold on. Thanks

Funny enough, one of them is the same one you just posted, just a different brand name. Worked good for my Nexus 5, but my LG G3 usually just stays at the current level when I put it on there with Ingress or Waze plus BT Streaming going on. If it is hot out it loses charge slowly.

Grips MUCH better, and is a really nice mount. 3 coil also, but not enough juice to do better than the other one. I've tried multiple 2.1A usb chargers too.

Does your DigiYes consistently charge your phone? I have one of the DigiYes models, but I'm finding it frequently stops charging, often within seconds of beginning charging, though sometimes it lasts a few minutes before giving up. I always get the "Wireless Charging" message on the display, never the "slow charging" warning.
I tried swapping their 2.1A cigarette lighter adapter for an Anker 2.4A charger -- same deal. Tried adjusting the vertical position in the charger -- sometimes seems to last a little longer before giving up, but generally doesn't help at all. When it stops charging, the blue light stays on (rather than going back to green).
When it does charge, I seem to get a decent charge current out of it. Very confusing, and probably going to get shipped back.
Edit: it seems to drop out less when charging from wall power, though it still happens -- perhaps correlated with greater power demands on the phone (Google Earth).
I did state above that it charges my phone, but if Navigation and BT Streaming is going on it keeps it at a steady level, or if hot discharges slowly.
If you don't have a 3 coil QI charger, positioning is very important, if it charges and stops, it is a positioning issue for sure.
Changing to a higher amperage charger won't help, as Qi only puts out so much. The new Qi standard coming out should fix this for us though, it transmits 2 amps I think, and has more distance so positioning shouldn't matter AS much.

Does the DigiYes disconnect constantly like the one I have? Or no?
Nope.
My other one did, but after adjusting how high it sat with the bottom brace that problem went away.
My air dock keeps the phone at a steady charge while running navigstion, bluetooth (aptx) via stock music app, and 100% brightness. The thermal protection activates eventually and lowers the brightness to 90%, and then it starts to very slowly charge. It charges fast if not running anything.
Also, you don't need 3 charging coils. My powerbot disk style charger easily works without worrying about position. I opened it up and the whole thing (~2.5") is one big coil. The air dock works well too, but I haven't opened it up.

It works perfectly fine. Does yours use both magnets and the suction pad? I believe they were separate options in one development point. Also, my car was dusty and it did get some dust on the pad which made it not hold, but wiping it with a damp cloth and letting it dry fixed that issue.

Does the DigiYes disconnect constantly like the one I have? Or no?

My DigiYes 3 coil frequently disconnects, sometimes in a constant connect-disconnect loop. Other times it holds for a while. It seemed to do better when I put it on a higher amperage charger than it came with, along with the original G3 cable. However this could be coincidence. When it does charge, the charging rate is comparable to any of my desktop qi chargers.

[Q] guaranteed qi charger that works?

picked up my new edge today ,tried charging wireless on my lg table mount and Nokia round puck ,charges then pauses ,is this a fault on phone or chargers ,anyone know witch one definitely works?

The three I have work perfectly with my s6 edge. My edge stays in and charges fine through a ringke fusion case.
In my car, I have the airdock 2.0
in my office, I have the woodpuck bamboo edition: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P7ZVIHW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

@fletch33 I've been very happy with it. I drive a Ford F250 so was a little worried that the phone might shake loose due to the firm suspension, but it holds on tight over speed bumps, pot holes (at slow speed), etc. Probably wouldn't trust it off road, though! It does collect dust over time, so I wipe it off with a wet rag or a alcohol wipe every couple of weeks to make sure it keeps its grip. It does provide enough juice to give me a net gain on the battery (slow, <10% per hour) while streaming music to the radio via BT and running waze and gps for navigation (screen always on), even with case on. I have the cd mount, which is rock solid. I would buy again.

hehehe
I have the choetech stadium and it works great. Obviously not as fast as the quick charger, but actually charges almost as fast as a straight 2amp charger.

Yes you can. But only Huawei has the 15w option. Others are limited to 5w-10w. At least I believe that's the case.
I just received my wireless charger yesterday.
I know some alternatives exist, but at least in Canada, 15W Qi charging options are as expensive as this charger was, so I chose the Huawei proprietary tech for the same price.
I am loving this wireless charger. I finally have quick wireless charging, and the pad feels premium.

I'm quite sure Xiaomi has 20w
Well, I ordered one of these from FastTech, and it arrived about a week ago. Amazingly quick shipping considering I bought about a dozen little el cheapo goodies and paid about $2 for the postage. The charging pad is genuine Huawei, in general anything on FastTech that outright claims to be genuine is. It came in a very nondescript tough plastic bag that held a white sealed box. Inside there is a meaningless tiny little pamphlet in Chinese, but why would you need any information anyway? As was mentioned, it doesn't come with a power supply - again, why would it? I crammed my official charging cable into it, works fine. The charging pad is quite a bit smaller than I expected, I guess it doesn't need to be anything more than it is - I would say about 2.75" in diameter and about half an inch thick. The surface is very 'grippy', I wish the TPU case that came with the phone was this sticky. Speaking of which, I throw my phone on the pad with the TPU case and it works fine. In fact, just in the name of science I just tried seeing how thick of material the charger would still work through, and it easily triggers through even 1/8" of paper - so this will work with *any* case that isn't made out of metal.
At first I thought that the placement was *extremely* finicky, because sometimes it seemed like it wouldn't trigger. I've learned since that it just takes a second or two sometimes no matter where you put it, so you just learn to trust it. The phone does have to be somewhat 'centered', but it isn't crazy specific. So, you plop your phone down and the nice green bubbly animation pops up with a pleasant sound, and the icon in the center shows that it is charging via lethal levels of radiation rather than safely through a wire. There is a very small LED under the lip of the pad, that lights up when it is charging. Obviously the LED on the phone will either be green or strobing for a notification while this is going on too. As far as charging speed goes, I haven't done any rigorous testing of any kind but it is most definitely not 'slow'. You put it down, and when you pick it up it has charged up enough that I have never thought "hmm, this is slow". Yeah, I know - real scientific. Oh, and the phone gets 'barely warm' when charging, and I do mean 'barely warm'. This is good, I've heard some combos out there result in a cooking hot phone - and that isn't good for anything.
Otherwise, not much to say. It is very, very nice not to have to plug my phone in - wearing out a charging port is an actual worry, and this way the bottom speaker isn't muffled to nothingness (a strange move, but when you take aggressive hyper efficient space and waterproofing into account it makes sense). One thing to mention, you obviously can't use your phone while it is charging. I mean you *could*, but you won't. If I had to gripe about anything, it is that the pad is a little thicker than I would like. It doesn't hurt anything, but if you have it teetering up on a high spot or something you will need to be a little wary about how you place your phone.
On a side note, not that anyone really 'needs' it in the real world, but don't forget we do have wireless charging in reverse. From reading up on it, the placement between two phones is *extremely* picky, and I would say that if both phones had a case it probably wouldn't work. The other thing they mentioned is that once you initiate a reverse charge, any movement between the two phones of any kind will break the connection - and it is a pain to get going again. Did you know we also have the option to charge something else via the Type C port? It is listed in the settings, I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere. That would be crazy useful - especially since we have SO much battery to spare. Think about it, you could charge wireless earbuds, bluetooth speakers, whatever. No idea at what rate it would charge (theoretically it could be fairly substantial) and of course the kind of cable you would need to do anything with this doesn't really exist... I am going to patch together a Type C to one of those 'multi-pronged charging ends', just to try this out. I have a very neat cable with one end that with one fixed end can fit both Micro-USB and Lightning ports - no one believes me, and honestly I didn't believe it myself at first either. When you eyeball it you think "now why aren't there more of these out there?"
Anyway, for the $20 this charging pad is a no brainer. It is legit, authentic, and works like a charm. One last thing - I swear I can feel the thing radiating from a foot away. I know that is 'impossible' given the inverse square law, but I'm not kidding.
@kaibosh99
Excellent and very helpful review, thank you very much !!!
@kaibosh99
Did the LED and cooling fan switch off automatically when the M20P was fully charged?
So does it show on the screen that it's fast changing?
