FWIW, I have tried GtabCom, Flashback, and Clemsyn/Calkulin6 recently, and I think I am going to stick with Clem/Calk6 (froyo). Here's what I found, and the order of the comparison topics reflects my priorities:
Boot time: quicker on clem/calk6 - takes about 24s from power button press to lock screen
Responsiveness: snappier on clem/calk6.
Stability (FCs, freeze-ups): better on clem/calk6
Video playback: Tied. Even though froyo has HW acceleration, video playback seems to be about the same for the quality of videos that I watch
Netflix: Tied. Available and working on both
upnp: Tied. Access to content over upnp works on both
Web browsing: Tied. HC has a better shortcut widget but Clem/Calk has a snappier browsing experience.
Apps/games: Tied. Everything I play seems to work on both platforms
Flash web games: Tied. Sites like Kongregate seem to work on both.
Flash video: Tied.
Sexiness: HC. HC is WAY sexier than froyo
Widgets: HC. Related to sexiness. Widgets are way better on HC.
Gmail widget: HC. Have not found a decent gmail widget on Clem/Calk
Location: HC. IP-based location not working on Clem/Calk6
Camera: Froyo. Works on froyo but I don't use it
Overall, I would say that in comparing functionality, froyo and HC are tied. HC is definitely better looking, but for me beauty is only skin deep , and speed and reliability are keeping me on Froyo.
Could you run this hw acceleration stress test on calkulin + clemsyn combo and let us know what fps the tablet could get :

Thanks
Thanks for posting.
How about battery life? Supposedly Gingerbread fixed a lot of the battery life problems and HC implemented that. Did you do anything with battery life comparision?

Good point - I forgot about this in my original post. I think that battery life is much better in Clem/Calk6, and this is also important to me however I don't have any hard measurements to back this up. There are some threads that talk about included apps that reduce battery life in HC.

Al, thanks for posting the result. I assume that you are using the stock browser ?
People who used HC alpha reported their test results to be between 4 - 12 fps. So it seemed that the full hw acceleration of froyo is not being utilized in browing ?
Could you repeat the test with different browsers, i.e. firefox, Dolphin HD v4.5 and opera mobile ?
Your 12 fps score on the PC is low. A $30 cheap 5450 radeon video card with 1 MB memory could improve the score to 60 + fps and you will notice a significant improvement.

Problem for me is the 'sexiness' of HC makes it very hard for me to go back to my old rom (Beasty/Clem) despite the fact it is noticeably faster then Gtab. Plus you lose out on some great tablet apps like News360.
Reeser,
What other tablet apps do you like since I do like News360 and a number of apps I find are definitely designed for phones instead of tablets.

You gain very little but lose a lot with HC. Mainly NO HW Acceleration. If I have good hardware then I want to be able to get the full benefits it has. HC is definitely the latest but gor GTabs, not the greatest IMO.

Yeah but it's like using a pc with an awesome video card only that he awesome video card is disabled in favor of lame intel graphics.
Just to get a consesus going. I've went back and forth between GTC and Clem/Calk5, I keep going back to Froyo. It may not have all the bells and whistles but it's just not worth it for what I lose in HC.
I'll stay on Froyo until I encounter a must have app that will only run on HC.
Here is the one thing that is detering me from going back to Froyo (and its so minor..)
PORTRAIT ORIENTATION. I WANT MY SOFT KEYS TO BE ON THE BOTTOM.
If Honeycomb would play hulu I would stay there, but I only get sound or video but not both in any of the solutions I have tried....anyone have a working hulu fix for Honeycomb?
I also agree, I also switch back to Gingerbread or Honeycomb due to the buttons on the bottom, if someone could create a utility for this I would probably stay with Froyo. As it is I switch between Beasty's, CM7Tab and Flashback and GtabComb on nearly a daily basis...So conflicted!

I hear this often, but in my actual use I don't see any issues with overclocked performance in graphics. I must not be playing enough games - I use it for email, reading, browsing, etc. Maybe watch a video now and then (on the far less than 720p screen, watching "HD" video makes no sense)
So, yeah. Whatever floats your boat.
I've been wondering about the hardware acceleration issue as well. It came up in the Illuminate thread, since he's claimed that HA is working on his rom. Folks there have tested some graphics intense games and they worked fine on their system. They can play video with software decoding, so what exactly does HA give us as a benefit.
Can anyone that's running a HC rom please run an Antutu benchmark and report their 2D and 3D rendering results?
the other benchmark test mainly concentrate on CPU performance, not graphics rendering. I had run a Neocore test and got 62.7FPS with Calk/Clem. I've been told that the test is outdated, but if it produces the same results with a HC rom, then we'll know that HA doesn't effect graphics rendering as much as we thought.
Thanks,
Todd Evans

I have tried every ROM available, senseless or with sense; and whenever I run Apex or Nova, the scrolling is low quality, laggy, and choppy. I've tried setting different scrolling times with no avail. Is their some sort of optimization that stock ics has that sense phones don't? I'd love to know if I can fix the issue, or at least figure out what's causing it.

People's perceptions vary. It's the same for them as it is for you. They've probably never seen the launchers running at a full 60 fps on a Galaxy Nexus and have no clue they're getting subpar performance.
It seems to boil down to unimplemented acceleration for some functions in the graphics driver (if sense doesn't use it, they don't need to support it). Don't bother with the 218 drivers, either, they aren't any better.
i dont know why more people dont use nova.. its the smoothest launcher for me.

That's why I left Apex for LauncherPro. Not ICS, but fast as hell.
I emailed the programmer for Nova and he told me it might have something to do with our leaks not including the proper 3D or graphics libraries.
I do know exactly what you mean, when flipping desktops with Sense, it looks like we get 60 frames per second and it's super smooth. With Apex, Nova or GO, it's still fast but the framerate drops down a LOT.
What's weird is that when opening the app drawer, all those launchers become really fast and really smooth. It's only when flipping desktop pages. Even with no wallpaper scroll it's choppy.
Same problem here. I tried flashing the Adreno 220 update but it lowered benchmark scores and didn't improve the responsiveness of Apex.
Guess I'm stuck with Ultrasmooth Rosie, I don't really like the Sense app drawer (neither 3.6 nor 4.0) but I'll take 60fps over 10fps.

My thought was that the libraries just fell back to software for some functions, and that was why it was slow. We certainly have the necessary library files, but that doesn't mean all the hooks were properly implemented.

For me, the app drawer in Nova is choppy until you get to the widgets section, which is ultra smooth. Apex's app drawer is adequately fast. Both home screens are terrible, though.
This is also quite irksome for me because it also seems to affect Chrome's performance, and I'd really like to use that.
One can only hope at this stage that the official OTA is different and properly accelerates the missing drawing functions.

Actually I have used a Galaxy Nexus, and the only thing that my Rezound does not compare too would be Jelly Bean on the Nexus. I switched things up lately though to sense 3.6 to run Tablet mode again though and I Still dont have any performance issues, Even on Apex Launcher. Both on Sense 4 and on 3.6.
Although I would agree that when running Tablet mode, Nova runs a tad choppy, but Apex is still beasting it!

I had a Galaxy Nexus, too, and the home screen was much smoother when scrolling. Are you saying you're getting 60 fps with your Rezound?
What about with Chrome? Is your scrolling there 60 fps or does it stutter?
I'm curious about the Droid Incredible 4g now, too. I'm wondering if it does or doesn't have this issue. I pulled the Adreno drivers from its image and tried them and it makes no difference on this phone.

So far its super smooth, I have a friend I work with too that has a Nexus and he says I did a good job setting up. We did side by sides and it keeps up very well with his ICS Nexus, then he Put JB on and I lose lol.
For Chrome I dont know, I never use it, I use stock ICS Browser or even ICS + (The Stock runs better than ICS + [Although I'm sure they are the exact same thing?]). Only issue I have is that stuff shows up kinda small since I'm running Tablet Mode now.
Also what's the purpose of the Adreno drivers? I read the thread on it a while back when they first pulled them from some other device, but dont remember what they were for.

Saying it's "super smooth" doesn't mean anything, because it might mean something different to you than us. I was looking to quantify things. If you know what 60 fps looks like, you can definitely say whether or not you're achieving that. I can say that this phone does not reach 60 fps in the cases I mentioned. A Galaxy Nexus does.
I use ICS Browser+ as well, as it doesn't seem to suffer from the stuttering issue. If you're willing to test, it's simple enough to download Chrome and check if scrolling is smooth like it is in the stock browser or ICS Browser+.
The Adreno drivers are just that: the drivers for the Adreno 200 series of graphics hardware. They are an implementation of EGL and OpenGL ES for the GPU in the phone. The theory was, being newer, that they would be faster or have improved acceleration and/or power management. From testing, I haven't seen any qualitative benefits to using anything other than the stock drivers, and people have said their benchmark numbers aren't any different, either.

I agree with you that saying Super Smooth doesnt really mean much to everyone else, but without any real method of measuring the true FPS at the moment makes it even tougher. Although I can truthfully say that it seems to be matching the smoothness of the Nexus so far, if its not a full 60fps then its pretty DARN close lol.
For Chrome I'll be testing in a few when I get out from work and I'll post what my findings are. Never used Chrome on Phone mode or Tablet mode lol.
I might try out those Drivers see if it makes it even better....ish? Although If you guys havent had much luck with your rezounds then I assume I won't have much luck either. Either way i'll Try that out too. Anyone have a link to it?
Yep, this was the main reason why I stopped using de-sensed roms with apex/nova/trebuchet and switched to sense roms. Just couldn't take the choppiness anymore
Anyone have the latest apk for chrome. I can't get it off the market. Says not compatible. Much thanks in advance

It is definitely faster than Dolphin on this ROM for me. It seems to be pretty smart about how it uses memory without sacrificing the experience much. For instance, when switching tabs it seems to dump the stuff you're not looking at and reload when you return. But, because it's so fast to load pages, it doesn't hurt the experience as much as saving all the tabs into memory and having to suffer increasing slowness.
It's definitely not the most feature-rich browser. But, what it lacks in features, it makes up for in speed.
I tried Puffin last night. I didnt like it. I will stick with Dolphin for Pad. It looks better and runs about the same speed.

Puffin Browser is fast because it's cloud-accelerated. I have it as a backup browser but I wouldn't use it as a primary browser. It doesn't allow you to download anything through the browser.
Also it seems the Puffin browser free version offers Flash support on a trail basis for only two weeks after which one need to pay $2.99 for extended flash support on this browser

Perhaps you could try one of the lollipop versions. They (both aosp and Omni) are really stable. If you however need 3G I would suggest the aosp rom.
There's no harm in trying them out. If you still feel that they lag to much you can always go back to stock.
I've been running the aosp rom on my wifi tab for some time now and it performs pretty great actually.

Yes, responsive. I did overclock it to 1400mhz but it's running stable. Only youtube is sometimes not the best when running 720p videos.

I can only speak from my experience with the aosp rom but scrolling in Chrome is smooth, I'm also using Nova Launcher and it is overclocked to 1400 mhz. Please don't expect miracles from this old device that samsung gave up on one ago. It runs 5.1.1 as smooth as it can. Also don't expect any hard core gaming and youtube will sometimes have issues. If all these things are deal-breakers then stay with whatever you have now. I wrote this from my own experience with my own tab. My father has the same one else only that one is bone stock. Touch wiz and everything with only a handful of apps installed. And yes it runs smooth and has less "issues" but it's running 4.0.4... I hope my explanation helps you make an informed decision.

I was considering the same. I was on 4.4 omni, seemed laggy. Flashed stock ICS, which did seem snappy but still bloated. I thought I'd give AOSP 5.1 a go. Haven't over clocked anything and its definitely smoother than 4.4 omni. Very compact ROM, I installed gapps and that only set google play. Currently tested WiFi and GPS and they're working. Chrome is smooth and running flash smoothly. Auto detected resolution on YouTube.com is smooth. Haven't tried YouTube app as yet. I normally use tubemate anyway. This tab will always have trouble playing 1080p vid. Max I go now is 720. Tried and its working fine using mxplayer. 5.1 is still in social testing but the bugs are slowly being fixed. I was on ICS for a long time as it performed well. Having experienced the same with 4.4 and now upgrading to this rom , I'm happy with how smooth and responsive it is. Ticks the boxes.
My main concern is lags. I run omni 4.4 on with nova and the response is disappointing.
Most of the time, my son use it to watch movies, YouTube and some games but nothing really hard. When I take it to do some stuff on it, the lags just giving me crazy. I know that the main problem is lack of RAM but hey, with 4.0.4 it works OK.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda premium
Going back does mean stability. The way I look at it though is you can only put so much into a mini, but it will always be a mini, not a Ferrari. Lollipop seems to work OK but its stretching the capability of this tab. For me with minor tweaks its going OK. A goto software always on all my droids is Greenify. It kills all the apps lingering in the background and stops them from opening again unless I open them. Try it out, you need all the ram you can get outta these older tabs. With the paid version it also kills system apps like google play services which is a big ram hog. I guess the only way you'll make your mind up is give ICS a go for a few days then try LP and see what you think.
A lollipop ROM might be smoother, if there would be the "Performance" menu in the settings app (like CM12).
If anyone has got any cyanogenmod ROM, i suggest these settings:
CPU governor:
• Intellidemand/ondemand: The CPU will increase the frequency when needed. It's default in many kernels. I really suggest that, because the device will be very stable (and smooth) and the battery life will be quite good :good: ;
• Performance: The CPU frequency will be set to max setting;
• Powersave: The CPU frequency will be set to minimum setting.
CPU min frequency: 150mhz (max. 200mhz)
CPU max frequency: overclock to 1400Mhz (do not overclock to 1.5 or 1.6ghz, the cpu will freeze and might be damaged)
I/O scheduler: deadline
zRam: 18%
Resources clean: on
KSM: on
PS: Enable "Set on boot" to each menu.
Sorry for the worst english ever.
I like decatf's 5.1 AOSP rom. He put a lot of work into creating a wrapper for hwcomposer which does a better job translating some of the newer rendering apis to work with the ancient ics binary Nvidia video driver blobs. That's why videos and animations are much smoother on his rom than the alternatives and why you don't get that weird "lightning bolt" rendering effect that's been around since pershoot's cyanogen jelly bean roms. He also implemented an audio driver wrapper as well in the same vein. And if you use his TWRP version, you can format /cache and /data to use f2fs, which definitely helps with disk I/O. He even ported over Multirom so you can dual-boot, but alas, it doesn't boot Ice Cream Sandwich roms at the moment.
It's the best modern rom thus far for the original Tab 10.1. Other than proper modern and native Nvidia drivers updated for Lollipop, the only thing really holding back the original 10.1 at this point is the Tegra 2's lack of NEON support. But there's nothing decatf can do about that.

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the Essential Phone under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
It is choppy and freezes a lot. I did not expect this from a highend phone
Mine has a slight chop to it especially if there are ads and pictures in the article. Usually it is fine.
My first device ran pretty smooth, but after 2 months the fingerprint scanner stopped working. I received a replacement unit this week and this just runs horribly. I don't know if this is a touchscreen issue or software. Scrolling through Youtube or a web page will seem to just hang and not move. The other day the phone just hung in the launcher. I'm getting more disappointed with this on a daily basis. I'm almost tempted to install the Oreo beta just to see if that improves things.
Scrolling is hands down much smoother on my 2 year old Nexus 5x. Hoping Essential can fix it. It's been choppy on all of the stock-based ROMs. AOSP/custom ROMs appears to be really smooth.
If you're rooted try a kernel control app & switch the gpu governor to CPU freq, userspace, or performance. That worked well for me. Especially cpu freq & performance.
Scrolling has been smooth on open beta 2 and 3.

Touch scrolling is very choppy on my device. Even the app drawer is choppy as hell. I was on OB3 and it was the same. The only fix for me on all ROMs is to set GPU governor to cpufreq or performance (which I believe are similar in keeping GPU clock mostly at max). In the past Lineage 14.1 was super smooth, but for some reason all Oreo based ROMs are just as choppy as stock. Fortunately, the GPU governor tweak works great until Essential finally releases a fix. I'll believe it when I see it. If the GPU governor tweak didn't work, I would have moved on to a different device.
I thought it was really smooth with the GPU performance governor until I used my friend's Note 8. That thing has some smooth scrolling.
This device has horrible scrolling stutter that doesn't seem will be resolved anytime before I pick up the OP6. It's unfortunate that there isn't a fix for this problem, despite having released supposed fixes. I miss the OP3, never had a single issue.
If you like a buttery smooth and readable/responsive experience, pick any other phone. This won't give it to you.
On beta 3 stock, never rooted.
I don't own the phone, but I read about the issue, and this sort of thing has really bugged me in the past. I'm curious: has anyone tested the refresh rate by going to vsynctester.com in Chrome? I wonder if the refresh rate is significantly off the reported value and resulting in an asynchronicity of sorts.

Haven't used this site before, but on my phone, it's reporting 60.3-60.7 Hz refresh rate, on a 60.7 Hz screen. The word on the right generally stays grey with only 1-2 flashes of blue or red.
That’s not perfect, but it’s not too off the mark. I was expecting something like 55 or 65hz if it were to be the source of the stuttering. It’s gotta be something else causing it, then.
I'm running 8.1 Beta and the only place I notice a slight choppiness is on my Google Feed page. Very smooth everywhere else.

I am on beta 8.1 already, the phone is not that smooth compared to my pixel 2 XL.
on Los 15.1 03/10/2018 and is buttery smooooooooooth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For anyone who sees this and runs latest stock rom as of this reply, how is scrolling smoothness now? I am considering getting this phone for a relative but they come from a Nexus 6P and with that, smooth scrolling so switching to something like the PH-1 and have choppy scrolling. Is it any better than before?

I'm on P beta 2, scrolling jitter/frame drops are still there. Coming from a Nexus 6P I'm sure they will notice it.

It is an issue with the screen/digitizer so it is never going to get fixed. You can either up the responsiveness and get jitters or make it smooth but very unresponsive.
