I was trying to install rom manager and it was telling me i need a custom recovery. If i do install custom recovery will it void my warranty? I don't want to root i just want to back up my current stock rom cuz i have so much customization. I have rooted in the past but i forgot if installing custom recovery roots the phone.

Yep. Flashing a custom kernel, recovery, or rom will trip KNOX which voids Samsung's warranty. T-Mobile on the other hand, doesn't really care. Don't hold me accountable for anything, but as far as I know, no one has been rejected a warranty exchange or JUMP because of tripped KNOX.

Usually no. Samsung will try to disavow a warranty if you install a custom recovery. But most people do not deal directly with Samsung for warranty claims. They usually deal with their carrier and most carriers don't care about Knox. In particular many TMB customers have posted that TMB honoured their warranty on 0x1 phones.
And in the EU, stronger consumer protection obstensibly stops Samsing from voiding warranties simply because you install a custom recovery.
This question has been asked and answered hundreds of times in existing forum threads, so we also know that you haven't learned how to do a forum search in three years.
.
If you have to deal with Samsung directly or send it back...just Odin back the stock tar..good idea anyway for personal data protection.

Uh huh. That will not decrement Knox from 0x1 to 0x0.
Installing a custom recovery will increment Knox and Samsung does check that.

Never deal with Samsung, knox is irreversible.

Knox is reversible, just not by the average end user. There are development threads demonstrating that it can be reversed and certainly Samsung resets it on refurbished phones.

You mean not even by the expert end developers either.. Probably only a few can. If that was the case a fix would have been prominent and provided. Plus it's another completely thing if it's done Samsung, that means it's irreversible for most

So far so good
I gave the towel apk a try and I must say an excellent and easy root . I went from slim rom back to nc5 stock uprooted . Down loaded root checker pro then from the stock browser I downloaded the apk file . No problems with my reinstall of twrp. No problems flashing a new rom . Will say that busy box needs to be reinstalled but having no problems at all :good:

Did it reset your Knox counter when you rooted with towelroot? If so, did the counter stay at 0x0 after you reinstalled TWRP? I'm already rooted and using TWRP so the only advantage to me would be to clear that Knox counter.
Well I have never been concerned with knox so I didn't notice an actual 0x0 but I will say all Samsung apps updated. Also I had no warnings on boot . Until flashing a kernel . Unless I've been told wrong that has little to do with my equipment replacement warranty so my thing with knox is solved with a??

I could be wrong, but this is only a root method that does not trip knox. It is not meant to reset knox. It is being marketed as a root method.

Am I wrong in thinking that rooting isn't what trips KNOX, it's the installing of a custom recovery? I am very excited that this easy root is available and it wont trip KNOX but wont I need a custom recovery in order to flash a custom ROM or anything for that matter. I just want to figure this out before rooting my device.

So if anyone has a link to tell me otherwise i would love to know why Knox is such a concern . i got my note a few weeks after the release and tripped my knox asap .1. if your in contract you most likely have a warranty so bust the sucker into bits and learn a lesson . No updates from sprint or samsung the problem so what !!! i have yet to see an ota compare to the custom roms i run and eventually we will get the update/feature . The absolute only down side i see at this point is most likely the replacement note3 wont have the snapdragon or will it ? sprint usually sends you a refurb . I really ask this honestly I have been flashing for 4 years and barely could chicken peck the keys on my pc when i started . my day to day job is as a master plumber so i never touch computers , but 4 years later and going through an evo, epic 4g touch / briefly a s3 AND A NOTE 3 ON SPRINT NO LESS . I HAVE YET TO SCREW UP MY SAMSUNGS SO BAD THEY TRUELY HARD BRICKED. Im a risk taker I used towel 10 min after i first heard of it . My advice to a total noob is if you think you bricked but it comes on at all its not a brick give it 2 or three days and do your home work most likely a fix will be or is available . If its as sammy from sprint rwilco12 repository is a life saver . Please let me know what IS the trip in tripping knox if any one can and happy flashing. :good:  took me all them years to finally post in the forums lmao
I rooted my phone with towelroot. I want twrp but I don't have a computer readily available. I've been looking around if I can flash twrp another way without tripping KNOX or bricking, but I have yet to find a reliable solution. Anyone have any suggestions, solutions, or ideas?

you might be able to install twrp without tripping knox. but if you use it you will most likely trip knox. custom recoveries , kernels and roms all will trip knox and void your warranty. at least with towelroot you can make plenty of modifications. and keep your warranty intact in case you need it in the future/

No, flashing a custom recovery WILL trip knox. What do you need that requires a custom recovery? Most mods can just be manually pushed to the proper location without a custom recovery.
I don't really know about tripping knox but you can install twrp through there app from the play store
Been researching into this issue as well. There must be a way around this because on my old AT&T S5, I tried out Alliance Rom via Safestrap and it never seemed to trip knox as far as I could tell. Knox counter was 0x0 when I got rid of that phone. I may hold off and put TWRP when I pay off the EIP on the phone which should be in a few months.
So basically if you towel rooted your device and installed twrp and you tripped Knox there's no way to reverse backup and untripped Knox putting it back to 0x0 is there?

Towel root will not trip knox. Only custom recoveries and custom rom and kernels trip knox. There is no way to get knox back to 0x0 if you trip it. Maybe in the future, but it seem unlikely. Most of the folks that could figure it out , now work for these companies and r not allowed to share info anymore. The companies motto is "If you can not beat them, then hire them."
At the rate android is going, we might as well buy iphones. Good quote that these companies share is "The android people are free to do exactly what they are told to do. "

You can't...yet. Flashing a recovery, which is needed to flash roms, trips knox. You can flash a kernel in ODIN (rarely) but that will trip knox as well since it isn't signed by Samsung.

You can flash it, but it will still trip knox when you boot into recovery. What I really don't understand (no offense), is why people care about knox. Tmobile doesn't. So unless you live outside the US, it really doesn't matter.

If you are planning to use the Jump program, it does matter from what I read on the T-mobile support forum because you will be charged the insurance deductible on the phone if it has been determined that knox has been tripped. One would figure they evaluate these phones to see if they can refurbish them.

I see no reason why they should care. They flash back everything to stock again using Samsung software that resets everything.
If you trip knox, can you still flash anything you want, modem, kernel, etc. I just have to ask, because i read that if you trip knox you will no longer be able to flash a modem or kernel. I sorry if this was asked but i tried to google search and really did not come up with anything to support it or deny it.
thanks

Flashing kernels, custom recoveries, and boot loaders WILL trip Knox. That's why people don't do it. After Knox is tripped, you don't have to worry about flashing anything you want. Knox just show's if you've flashed something. Once it's tripped, it does not limit what you can flash or not flash.
People are just careful not to flash kernels or bootloaders or custom recoveries so as to not trip Knox. They are worried they will not get warranty work on the phone if Knox is tripped.

I don't know where you read that but I wouldn't go back to that site. Knox is long ago tripped in my phone and I've flashed tons of ROMS Modems, Kernels, etc. I got the TMO S5 because it's bootloader isn't locked and I can flash what I like. I use it on AT&T btw.

Just rooting your S5 will keep you from getting OTA updates. But you can always odin your updates. Taking OTAs is dangerous for many reasons. It's better not to take them and find out what all they've changed by watching what happens to other peoples devices. Plus, if you use Mobile Odin Pro you can inject root and SU when you update.
Good luck with it.
If I've helped, please hit the thanks button.

No you have to be rooted to use mobile odin on your device. Mobile odin pro just injects root if you decide to update to a newer firmware using mobile odin pro.

Use pc odin to flash an ota that works with towel root. After that get mobile odin pro. Use mobile odin to flash all ota. You dont need to flash bootloader. Tho im on nh5 with an nh5 bootloader. Also this method will not trip knox.
I assume when android L hits, you will need to upgrade the bootloader to that version first, then use mobile odin to flash android L on the device.
Some one correct me if im wrong on that.
im sure some people know about this but a lot don't so I wanted to post this link to a thread that's buried here regarding flashing custom touchwiz roms without tripping knox. http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/help/flash-tw-custom-rom-tripping-knox-t2892774
basically you can get a debloated custom rom with aroma installer and not trip knox. Its no cyanogenmod but I prefer touchwiz anyway . this works with neatrom and alliance rom apparently. I have not tried it but there are many who have with other variants
I know that it just detects whether you've tampered with the firmware or bootloader. If you trip it you lose warranty. But seeing as I have insurance I don't necessarily need to use the warranty.
Am I safe to flash different roms and root? Or does knox do more than my basic understanding. The last samsung I had was the original note and flashing was stupidly easy and without worry!
Sent from my SM-G925F using XDA Free mobile app
yes mate just flash away most roms remove knox anyway but root will still trip it but like you who cares lol
I just got my note 3 from a 3rd party. Oddly, it had a t-mobile card in it which assuming is a an ability it has, stock.
My phone reports to me that it is infact n900p. It is 0x0 knox and is NOT rooted.
My concerns: a valuable and intelligent, with personal experience with this same phone but differnt carrier, friend, told me that tripping knox not only voids your warrenty, but prohibits you from flashing modem roms ever again.
From my research: rooting my already ok2 base rom,is possible, but no matter what, will trip knox..or is that only on custom roms? Can i enjoy xsposed?
Apparently, this update dropped recently aswell, so am i boned? Will i have no choice but to trip knox?
Is my friend correct about loosing more then my (non existent ) warrenty?
Honestly, if the samsung warrenty is all i am losing, i am in..cuz sprint doesnt care about knox, i already know that from getting replacement, i have tep.
I hate sounding so noobish, been in the scene since my first htc hero, i am not new to this...

Well, I will tell you that my knox was tripped within a week of having my phone. I can also tell you that I have used Odin on at least three occasions to reflash stock so I could get the OTA updates, and have had no issues. Only thing to remember for when you flash back in Odin, you have to enter download from completely powered off. Two or three flashes might be necessary, but it can be done.
Just make sure you get the right ROM for the crrier you want to use (you probably already knew that). Hopefully you have your MSL.
So, the only thing to lose is your Samsung warranty...which is probably void anyways with you not being the original purchaser. Just have a copy of the stock ROM for that phone to Odin if you "send it south" by accident.
Your baseband version under device info is your modem version. I was able to successfully update it to ok2 after I flashed back to stock and got the OTA updates.
