Some clarification please over 5.0 root and knox - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I just got my note 3 from a 3rd party. Oddly, it had a t-mobile card in it which assuming is a an ability it has, stock.
My phone reports to me that it is infact n900p. It is 0x0 knox and is NOT rooted.
My concerns: a valuable and intelligent, with personal experience with this same phone but differnt carrier, friend, told me that tripping knox not only voids your warrenty, but prohibits you from flashing modem roms ever again.
From my research: rooting my already ok2 base rom,is possible, but no matter what, will trip knox..or is that only on custom roms? Can i enjoy xsposed?
Apparently, this update dropped recently aswell, so am i boned? Will i have no choice but to trip knox?
Is my friend correct about loosing more then my (non existent ) warrenty?
Honestly, if the samsung warrenty is all i am losing, i am in..cuz sprint doesnt care about knox, i already know that from getting replacement, i have tep.
I hate sounding so noobish, been in the scene since my first htc hero, i am not new to this...

No one has a answer? I was for sure thinking l was going to be called noob or something.

You know what I was thinking about the same thing since I just got my SM-N900P the other day from eBay and I rooted it then I put the TWRP recovery. I did a backup of my original stock rom after the rooting process and also I downloaded the stock rom from xda so worse comes to worse anything happens I'm downloading the stockrom and I'll start out fresh.

Well, I will tell you that my knox was tripped within a week of having my phone. I can also tell you that I have used Odin on at least three occasions to reflash stock so I could get the OTA updates, and have had no issues. Only thing to remember for when you flash back in Odin, you have to enter download from completely powered off. Two or three flashes might be necessary, but it can be done.
Just make sure you get the right ROM for the crrier you want to use (you probably already knew that). Hopefully you have your MSL.
So, the only thing to lose is your Samsung warranty...which is probably void anyways with you not being the original purchaser. Just have a copy of the stock ROM for that phone to Odin if you "send it south" by accident.
Your baseband version under device info is your modem version. I was able to successfully update it to ok2 after I flashed back to stock and got the OTA updates.

Relock Boot-loader

Just wanted to know how to re-lock the bootloader to return to Verizon for warranty purposes.
I have the stock odin file but want to know would it relock the bootloader itself ? If not how do i do it ?

Just ODIN back to stock and your bootloader will be locked again.
I would check the flash counter also if I was taking it to Verizon. Good news triangle away supports our device now.
yeah I think imnuts had a thread in dev has a tar image that will restore to shipping software

i was wondering the same thing , but i thought you couldn't flash anything in odin once the bootloader was unlocked. Can anyone clarify this I need to do a warranty claim and I need to undo everything to avoid any hassle

Youre not supposed to odin anything EXCEPT imnutz odin file to get back to stock. With the bootloader unlock it will let you flash anything. So to be better safe than sorry and help prevent people from flashing what they should be not they said dont flash anything. That way they dont have dozens of people bricking their phones. Ive read in multiple threads and if you search adams thread youll find there is no problem with flashing back to stock with odin.
Sent from my SCH-I605
OP, did it work? Did you successfully return it? I need to do the same, but if reflashing the stock ROM and triangle-away'ing didn't work, please let me (and others from the future who want to do the same... hello people of the future!...) know what happened for you. Thanks.
I flashed mine back to stock and returned it. No charges yet depending how you rooted your device, your flash counter might be tripped. To check power off, hold up, power and home button. It should say something like:
Custom binary: no

This is exactly what I was wondering too. I can't believe I haven't found this thread before, shouldn't have started one myself, I guess. My assumption, based on what I've read is that you can still use the imnuts restore after 4.1.2, and that there's no real need to re-lock...but I'm still waiting on a confirmation of that.

stock 4.3 may be unlocked &rooted with jtag!?!

I just bought a note 2 off of swappa that is completely stock and on 4.3. Since reading many post about Knox and how this bootloader is completely locked down now I contacted mobile tech videos to see if they could unlock, root, and put custom recovery on this phone with the knox 4.3 update... They replied YES!!! Their guy emailed me back saying that they do have a service for downgrading, rooting, and cutom recovery install...I'm not sure about people with the knox already flagged or other circumstances. You would have to email and check...but for 30$ in my stock 4.3 locked situation this seems like my only option to install custom rooms and recovery. I haven't done it yet. I will be within a couple days. But I have used their service before on a droid dna unlock with no issues. We shall see. Just though some of you might like to have the info to contact them for yourselves.
Please update us on the results when you do get it back. I'd take a fee if I could get it unlocked.

Yes I will update...not sure if they are going to downgrade then unlock it or if they have the ability to unlock 4.3. but the guy said they have what it takes to unlock, root, install custom recovery, and custom rom different samsung phones on the 4.3 knoxed bootloader. I get the phone this week and will be shipping it when I get it straight to mobile tech videos

I just emailed them as well and here's the reply. " I do indeed have the ability to revert the Knox bootloader back to the 4.1.2 bootloader." looks like I'll have to try them.
Color me skeptical. Optimistic, but skeptical.
What is Mobile Tech Videos' reputation? And is this something generally possible with JTAG?

Hmmmm; I had emailed them also, and the reply I got back was, "At this time, there are no options for unlocking the bootloader if on 4.3."

SUCCESS!!!!!!!
so i just got my phone back and it was a Success. MobileTech was able to downgrade my stock 4.3 note2 back to 4.1.2 stock, unlock it, install cmw,and root the phone.(no knox tripped or unofficial software flags shown). when i turned the phone on it wanted to download the 4.3 ota again so i freaked out, because usually my rooted phones dont try to ota update. so i odined it with the kies 4.1.2+ pit. took it back to locked stock 4.1.2, and then ran casual to reunlock/root/recovery-Success again...(meaning we can go back to clean stock if need be). It wanted to ota again so i just froze the SDM 1.0 apk with titanium back up. Josh from mobile tech said this will be a new service for our phones and will be charging 60-80$ for the service. email them/him if you have any ????s....He also warned me that even after jtagging if we take the 4.3 ota its back to locked with knox. But I am back to installing roms again and very pleased.

I know this wasn't my issues, but just to recommend Mobile Tech and their great and fast service. I hard bricked my phone and had to send it in to get jtag and they were nice, answered questions and quick with their service. Its nice because they are located about a 1 hour away from me. If they say they can do it I would believe them.
Had anybody else been able to confirm this? It seems that there are a lot of threads about people being bummed about their phones that have 4.3 them. This could be their solution.

This is a repost because I saw someone preaching about the MobileTechVideos again. I have spent a vast amount of research and hands on technical work on downgrading
From: VRUEMJ9 4.3
To: VRALJB 4.1.1
And it possible. The problem isn't downgrading the ROM, it's the bootloader, it consistently stays at a 4.3 Bootloader while the ROM is at 4.1.1. Your post looks more like a promotion/advertisement, therefore I ask you Steurer1, can MobileTechVideos:
1) Downgrade the bootloader
2) Unlock the bootloader
3) Load a custom recovery (CWM, Philz, TWRP).......
4) Furthermore installing a custom rom?
From your post, you acknowledged this, so assuming MobileTechVideos can accomplish all this, then these guys are gurus and I will happily send them my phone, tuck my tail between my legs, and hats off to them! Taking it a step further, this is what fellow techies really want: If we could please get a technical post by MobileTechVideos here on XDA describing the process that they used to perform the four requirements above. This would be the most beneficial post that the rest of the Note II SCH-I605 4.3 community could really appreciate. Awaiting a follow up Steurer1.

Well, looking at their site, you can see they are not going to do steps 2-4. That is up to you when you get your phone back. They are only going to downgrade the bootloader from the non-unlockable 4.3 version to the unlockable 4.1.2.
And I have no vested interest in the company and have never used their services, but by all indications that are a reputable business. Their name comes up constantly for unbricking devices.
Also, given that they currently have the market cornered on the service, I truly can't imagine they would release all the technical details on how they are doing it. They have a monetary interest to not let it get out, in fact. Just my two cents.

I have a galaxy note 2 gt-n7105 and running 4.3 with knox tripped at 0X1. everybody telling me you cant downgrade. I can only downgrade to 4.1.2 using a backup using clockworkmod. but the funny thing is using odin I can flash 4.1.1 I don't have a clue why no other older firmware cant be flushed using odin but I can flash 4.1.1 so Sguitari your telling me I am running 4.1.1 but still using the 4.3 locked bootloader ????????? CAN SOMEBODY SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS. THANKS
worked for me
I didnt have the Knox issue but I did have a hard bricked NOTE 2. My jig didnt work and there was no life to the phone at all, but then I saw mobile tech videos site and sent in my device. My NOTE 2 was returned with in the stated time frame (I did not request rush service as this is not my primary device) and in perfect working condition. They are very easy to work with and have an excellent level of communication. An additional USB cable that I ordered was not in the return envelope but upon sending a polite email to Josh it was sent to me the next day. I would highly recommend mobile tech for any problem that you are not able to fix yourself.

[Q] New Note 3 owner, root questions

Hey everyone,
Just got the note 3 today and it's pretty dope!!!! I did not take the OTA update to kk 4.4.2, which is what I assume it wants to do. I'm on 4.3 with the MI5 baseband. Is there Knox on this bootloader that I have to worry about? Is it easier rooting with what I have or easier on 4.4.2? Thanks in advance for any advice
Either one you can auto root with Chainfires method which trips knox, you can also root with Kingo which doesn't trip knox. But as soon as you flash a recovery it will. Congrats on the new phone.

Take the update and then decide if you wish to root. That bootloader and version of Jellybean in 5 months old. Where did you buy this phone? You have 3 updates to get to KitKat, so it's going to be awhile.
I would suggest going straight to KitKat via one of the One-click or tar files in the dev forum, but I strongly suggest that you read before making the choice.

No problem, and thanks for answering. I really do hope you enjoy your time here on the forums.
[Side notes about the build number being MI3, I don't know if that bodes bad for Sammy or not, but that is pretty stale inventory. Kind of boggles the mind when there have been many on these threads whom have been bi+ch slapped by Sprint's recent rapacious turn IN servicing existing customers, waiting weeks for refurbished devices, when they've more than likely got older unboxed phones sitting in inventory collecting dust. That would kind of irk the crap our of me.]

No prob! And thanks, I certainly will, xda is awesome! Spent plenty of time of here for my S3 and N7. Doesn't seem like Sprint cares or they dont want to give out new phones unless theyre making that dollar.
Correct me if im wrong but you cant flash a custom rom w/o a custom recovery right? I want to root so I can get a debloated rom whether it'd be stock debloated or CM but it seems tripping knox is inevitable.

This is why I suggested that you either take the OTA updates on step sequence, or flash a one-click, and possibly avoid rooting if you can. You need to read, take counsel of patience, and choose for you. Going from TouchWiz to AOSP is not swift, requires time and care. Most importantly, do nothing in hot haste that which you would not do by taking time.
There is no single good reason not to wait if you are in the least undecided or unclear about the means or your desired outcome.
You'll be far happier in the long term. I'd avoid AOSP if this is your first time, but even here, that's my opinion.
Good luck.

If your not worried about your knox being tripped just use Chainfire's it's easy, download the correct version put it in the Pda slot in Odin flash and you are rooted. It's just about easy as it gets. Then download Rom manager or Goo manager and install one of the recoveries. Then you can flash what ever you like or debloat what you are running.

Towelroot, a new way of rooting Samsung phones?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157 I don't know if this will work for our phones. I don't know if it's safe, but I thought I'd post it anyways. Read about it originally at androidandme.
Edit: People are reporting it works with the sprint note 3 and doesn't trip Knox.
So far so good
I gave the towel apk a try and I must say an excellent and easy root . I went from slim rom back to nc5 stock uprooted . Down loaded root checker pro then from the stock browser I downloaded the apk file . No problems with my reinstall of twrp. No problems flashing a new rom . Will say that busy box needs to be reinstalled but having no problems at all :good:

Did it reset your Knox counter when you rooted with towelroot? If so, did the counter stay at 0x0 after you reinstalled TWRP? I'm already rooted and using TWRP so the only advantage to me would be to clear that Knox counter.
Well I have never been concerned with knox so I didn't notice an actual 0x0 but I will say all Samsung apps updated. Also I had no warnings on boot . Until flashing a kernel . Unless I've been told wrong that has little to do with my equipment replacement warranty so my thing with knox is solved with a??

Am I wrong in thinking that rooting isn't what trips KNOX, it's the installing of a custom recovery? I am very excited that this easy root is available and it wont trip KNOX but wont I need a custom recovery in order to flash a custom ROM or anything for that matter. I just want to figure this out before rooting my device.

So if anyone has a link to tell me otherwise i would love to know why Knox is such a concern . i got my note a few weeks after the release and tripped my knox asap .1. if your in contract you most likely have a warranty so bust the sucker into bits and learn a lesson . No updates from sprint or samsung the problem so what !!! i have yet to see an ota compare to the custom roms i run and eventually we will get the update/feature . The absolute only down side i see at this point is most likely the replacement note3 wont have the snapdragon or will it ? sprint usually sends you a refurb . I really ask this honestly I have been flashing for 4 years and barely could chicken peck the keys on my pc when i started . my day to day job is as a master plumber so i never touch computers , but 4 years later and going through an evo, epic 4g touch / briefly a s3 AND A NOTE 3 ON SPRINT NO LESS . I HAVE YET TO SCREW UP MY SAMSUNGS SO BAD THEY TRUELY HARD BRICKED. Im a risk taker I used towel 10 min after i first heard of it . My advice to a total noob is if you think you bricked but it comes on at all its not a brick give it 2 or three days and do your home work most likely a fix will be or is available . If its as sammy from sprint rwilco12 repository is a life saver . Please let me know what IS the trip in tripping knox if any one can and happy flashing. :good:  took me all them years to finally post in the forums lmao

[Q] To Root or not to Root?... that is the question.

Hello guys! I'm new to the S5 section and even more new to the T-Mobile area since I'm on AT&T network. I come from a S4 that I could root without tripping Knox and at least use different variants of TW rooms using Safestrap.
I was under the impression that Tmobile S5 version was not as tight as the AT&T version but after reading a few threads I'm not sure.
I have to say that I love the stock UI of S5 more than the one on the S4. That said I still would like to have more control over a few things.
So I could live with a rooted S5 with Xposed Installer and Wanam and a few other Xposed modules.
But I would not like to trip my phones Knox counter.
I wonder if that is possible under BNH5 firmware and how?
Can I root using Towelroot and intall Xposed, Wanam and a few other customization modules without tripping my phone's Knox counter?
Also Would I be able to go back to a virgin Stock Rom without tripping the counter?
I would appreciate all the help.
Thanks.

You cannot root NH5 software directly with towel root, but there is a thread that shows exactly step by step how to downgrade to a version that towel root will root and then go back to the latest. This procedure does NOT trip Knox. Knox is tripped anytime you load a custom recovery or kernel.
So, if you just want root so you can run Xposed and Wannam and what not, that's not a problem and you can odin back to stock if you need to for a return. Look around here on the TMO S5 threads and you'll find all this hashed over and over.
Good Luck!
Hit thanks if I've helped.

Yes you can root your phone but you will have to roll back the firmware back NE6 and then use towel root. Once you do that, then you can use pc odin to flash the nh5 firmware and use mobile odin pro to flash the NH5 software back onto your phone and retain root. Just remember that you will not trip knox using the method above, but if you flash a custom recovery or non tmo s5 kernel you will trip knox. There are a few threads here that you help you root and upgrade to keep root. Make sure you read thru some of the rooting threads before you do anything to your phone, It is your responsibility to make sure you know how and what your are doing when flash your phone, We are not responsible if you forget to read or flash something that is not for your type of phone, if you brick your phone or if you trip knox. Also Remember that if you do trip knox, there currently is no way to reset the knox counter, so please Do Not Ask.
Have fun and read before you decide to do anything to your phone..
Sorry for the question but could you pont me to the right thread. I found one that wad NJ ot so clear or explicit.

First Question is do you have premium handset protection? If so then I wouldnt worry about Knox at all. Handset protection covers everything including running over your phone with a car . I have had devices that I didnt have insurance on in the past when I was a NOOB that had the warranty flag tripped and never had any problems at T-Mobile with replacing it . T-Mobile would rather replace a knox tripped phone over replacing a phone with a cracked screen because they just re-flash the device and pass it along to the next person . It doesnt cost them anything like it would having to repair cracked screens etc... I have the S5 G900T and I rooted while I was still in the T-Mobile store buying it LOL . The sales guy told me their was no way to root it at the time (which he was wrong ). Anyway I understand kind of why you wouldnt want to trip knox but at the end of the day it really wont matter if tmobile is your carrier . There really isnt a difference between a tripped phone and one that isnt when it comes to getting it replaced . I know this from experience and many many others on XDA will tell you the same .

It's my understanding that the KNOX security flag is a electronic fuse. Once tripped it's burned to 1 state and a "re-flash" won't repair that.
That said, I could see T-Mobile taking it back because of the value of the replaceable parts, including an intact display. Enough profit is made on the extended protection plans that T-mobile could grind them all up and use them for fancy pavement surfacing. I've yet, for example to replace "anything" under an extended service plan. I get them to be careful, but there's been plenty of $$$ for those plan providers.
Extended service plans? Total and absolutely guaranteed profit for vendors.

I read the towelroot thread but it does not say anything on how to downgrade firmware version.

hI THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
1. DOWNLOAD G900TUVU1ANE6 FULL STOCK TAR FROM HERE https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358541270
2. uNZIP THE FILE AND FLASH IT USING PC ODIN. WHICH YOU CAN GET HERE https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291676783
3. ROOT WITH TOWELROOT . TOWELROOT IS HERE https://towelroot.com/
4.DOWNLOAD MOBILE ODIN PRO FROM THE PLAYSTORE IT WILL COST YOU AROUND $6
5.DOWNLOAD THE NEWEST STOCK TAR TMB-G900TUVU1BNH5 FROM SAMMOBILE OR FOR A MUCH FASTER LINK GET IT HERE https://mega.co.nz/#!F0gFFIpL!SdOFS_5OSOB6b1WUSxfVR286LgrAeDdugRRC5-G0dQ8
6. UNZIP THE FILE AND COPY IT TO YOUR SDCARD OR INTERNAL STORAGE ON YOUR PHONE.
7. USING MOBILE ODIN PRO CHOOSE THE OPEN FILE SELECTION AND THEN CHOOSE THE FILE THAT YOU COPIED TO THE PHONE
8. IGNORE THE WARNING FROM MOBILE ODIN REGARDING KNOX. IT WONT TRIP. TICK EVEROOT AND INJECT SUPERSU FLASH THE PHONE .
YOUR PHONE SHOULD BE ROOTED UPON ONCE IT RESTARTS AND ON THE NEWEST FIRMWARE.
YOUR BOOTLOADER CAN NOT BE UPGRADED BY MOBILE ODIN. THAT CAN BE FLASHED SEPERATELY BY USING PC ODIN.LOOK FOR THE BOOTLOADER FILE IF YOU WISH TO UPGRADE IT BUT IN MY OPINION IT IS NOT CRITICAL TO INSTALL AT THIS POINT. MOST OF THESE FILES CAN BE FOUND HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2761412 OR HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2715487
IF YOU CANT FIND SOMETHING USE GOOGLE.
FINALLY WHATEVER HAPPENS TO YOUR PHONE IS SOLELY YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
I WOULD READ THESE THREADS BEFORE DOIN G ANYTHING
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2790292 http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/general/nh5-stock-rom-ur-phone-to-stock-t2901732 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784025 http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...all-updatetmb-g900tuvu1bnh5-size-1-5-t2873090 http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo.../experimental-how-to-root-triggering-t2845421
LASTLY YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT XPOSED DOES NOT PLAY WELL WITH THE S5 IT BREAKS PRIVACY MODE S HEALTH CAUSES LAG AND IS ONLY USEFUL ON DALVIK. ONCE ANDROID L IS RELEASED . IT WILL BE USING THE ART ANDROID RUNTIME WHICH IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH XPOSED .
HAVE FUN!
