HI,
I have a galaxy player ( YP-G70CW - international ) that has had an Eryigit Rom installed for quite some time but it has never been very stable for me and constantly crashes and freezes! last week i decided enough was enough and i have decided to try some of the newer roms out now but for some reason i cant get anything to install from CWM recovery, i just get install aborted and error messages.
From Reading through the forum i have seen a few times that my ClockworkMod recovery v5.0.2.7 maybe outdated but cant find anyway to upgrade to Clockwork Mod v6.0.4.4 on the YP-G70....
Does this sound like my problem? is there an updated version of clockwork for the GP5.0? can any of the newer roms be installed by Odin? i have no issues installing things from Odin, should i be using Odin to upgrade to something else before i go to a 4.4 rom?
any help anyone can give me would be amazing, thanks in advance guys and girls

The thing that most people don't understand about recovery on the player 5.0 is that unlike a lot of other devices, recovery is in the kernel image. Ipso facto: flash a new kernel, get a new recovery.:good:
If your trying to get to KitKat, I suggest that you install an android 4.3.x ROM first. Make sure to read all of the dev's installation instructions and notes before flashing...:good:

Hi, recently bought an Samsung Fascinate for Telus so i could enjoy yet again more Android powerfullness! ( Had an HD7 before and i didn't really liked it )
So i started hacking my way trough this phone (wich is far more complicated than my previous HTC Desire or Motorola Milestone) and i got to the point in wich i have the WeUI Rom installed! Woohoo!
Except, i'd like to try a AOKP Rom (Kang's for example) but in every topic they talk about CWM Recovery fixed for CM7 (wich i have already downloader and tried to install MANY MANY times)
Here's what i was doing in order to get that CWM Recovery :
1. Get back to Stock Froyo using Odin files.
2. Update to 2.3.3 Using Samsung Kies
3. Now Flash CWM Recovery Fixed for CM7.
4. Odin Crashed and Failed at Recovery.Bin now in boot loop...(HELPP!!!))
.... Kidding made myself a JIG with some tutorials in here so i wont have to buy one
note : i also tried starting from STOCK 2.3 to Speedmod kernel recovery and Flash the recovery trough the recovery but it just... doesnt do anything?
1.Redo 1 to 2....
2. Get up with Glitchy Kernel with WeUI and it works...
3. But i'd really like to get those AOKP wich seems to be way more battery efficient!
Now i was wondering if that was the real method in order to do this or if there was a special order for TELUS user as i'm aware that there's some tiny things that are different.

make sure anyfiles you use are specifically for telus or you will brick the device.

i went from CWM 2.5.1 to your file 4.0.1 which then i was able to flash teamhacksung build and that has a cwm build of 5.5.0.4, then when flashing CWM 11.0 that flashed TWRP 2.6.3.0

I am thinking of flashing cyanogen mod or paranoid android which I plan on doing through goo manager but I would like to switch to TWRP first. I already have goo manager installed. I have read that people have installed TWRP over CWM through goo manager on other devices with no issues but haven't read anything like this for my device. Also as I'm a noob I still don't understand what a kernel is but I have read some roms require custom kernels can anyone tell me if cyanogen mod or paranoid android require custom kernels. Cyanogen mod and PA with their own kernels. A kernel is like the brain of your phone. It controls how your cpu, gpu behaves and it's clock speeds + some extra features such as headphone volume boost. Just search for twrp in goo manager and you'll find it.

99% your phone won't get bricked. I have flashed twrp over cwm many times and nothing has happened.

It's very hard to 'brick' your S3 and if it were to happen there are methods to 'un-brick' and flash back to stock firmware. So, I wouldn't worry about this. To be sure, wipe your phones data, cache & dalvic cache before switching/flashing between different ROMS. Finally, be sure the ROM you choose to flash is for your S3 model (i9300/international).
Personally, I'd check out a ROM for the Galaxy S3 called 'Chaos' (version 8.1) that runs Android 4.1.2 but includes many 4.2 features including PhotoSphere, Driving mode etc. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2148726
Alternatively, there has been a leek of what Samsung have been working on for the S3 update to 4.2.2 which is also worth checking out if you like the stock Samsung interface...
I recently picked up a GP 4.2. I immediately got it rooted so now I'm running a 2.3.6 stock rom with root. What's the next step in terms of getting a recovery installed and maybe moving up to an ICS or JB rom? I've kind of poked around a bit but it's some what confusing with all the other types of GPs in the same area. Does anybody have a recovery and rom they'd recommend? Is using rom manager to push CWM feasible?
I would recommend the ChaOS ROM/Kernel which includes CWM. It is one of the few available ROMs for this device right now but offers a lot of great features. You can also install an S3 or Jelly Bean theme with the ChaOS ROM. Here's the link to the ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2279806. I do not believe using ROM manager to push CWM is feasible on this device. Also, CM7 will most likely make it on to this device very soon. I would recommend watching for that in the near future. Thank you for the info Meta. I'm somewhere around the mid-high mid level with flashing and rooting but slogging through trying to find the right info for a GP 4.2 was getting a bit hectic. I think part of it was the way some people abbreviate the model compared to others. I just wanted to make sure I didn't brick the device.
I got it mainly for a perm, in-car music and GPS/navigation provider instead of always looking to my phone to do it. One thing I noticed about the rom, it mentions installing it via CWM. If I don't have CWM yet, can this rom get pushed by odin or do I have to get CWM first and then flash the rom?

Do you know if CM will come to the 3.6 as well? And from what I understand, to get CWM on the 3.6 you have to flash a custom kernel?

Yes. Those instructions are correct. However, you do not need to run the adb dev tool like the person does in the beginning of video in order to boot into download mode. You can just hold the power, home, and down-volume button to boot the phone into download mode before using Odin. Zaclimon's CWM kernel can be found here (along with the wifi fix): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198444 and installed with the instructions in the youtube video.

From what I have read I know that SerkTheTurk is currently compiling CM for the 4.2. I would imagine either him or some other 3.6 dev will take up the task of CM for your device. And, the answer to your second question is yes, you do have to flash a custom kernel similar to how the 4.2 requires a custom kernel.

Ok thanks. I also have a question regarding flashing kernels. In the linux world (and other os world), randomly changing your kernel is a big no no that would lead to major compatibility issues. I don't understand how people can mix and match kernels, roms, firmware, bootloaders, recoveries and everything else? There won't be conflicts?
Regarding the kernel available for the 3.6: what do I do if I encounter stability issues with it and, say, the upcoming CM7? I wouldn't be able to go back to my original kernel because I didn't have CWM to back it up in the first place. Won't I be stuck with a potentially faulty kernel?

In changing kernels in the android world, you have mixed results. There are times a kernel can cause some issues but for the most part (we're talking like 98%), if an XDA dev posts a kernel and lets you know you can use it, you can trust it. These devs no matter the device spend painstaking hours ironing things out. Also, many of them have a select group of people testing the kernel for faults and issues. In a very active community, if a well known dev posts a kernel, you can trust it. HOWEVER...no matter what we think or believe or what we're told, every device is a unique and beautiful snowflake. Back up back up back up BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP your stuff. If you want to be super ULTRA safe, take the back up and download it to your PC or somewhere safe.

Well that's my dilemma because in order to backup my kernel I first need to flash the custom kernel to get CWM. What do I do?

Just flash the cwm kernel because its basically the stock kernel but with cwm, and it shouldnt brick but if it does you can flash the stock kernel back again

But about kernels, on the webpage where I downloaded the stock rooted rom http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=166 it says specifically that the Wifi module in system and kernel must MATCH. This is what I'm talking about in regards to kernel compatibility with roms. How do I know if a kernel I'm downloading will have changes applied to it that will work with another rom like with this stock rom/kernel?
Well in order-I used odin to flash CWM. Once it rebooted, I saw the Galaxy SII boot anim. Used Rom Manager to have it boot to CWM. From there I flashed wifi fix, the rom and then the mod pack. My build number is gingerbread-ueld3. From what I can tell, I think I'm all done. At first I was like hrmmmmm. Doesn't look much different. When I hit the toggle bar though, I could tell it had changed. The process was all very simple after I got headed in the right direction with CWM. That was my only confusing start point for this.
Edit-my bad. The rom didn't take on the first flash. I could tell by the build number. Reflashing the rom and the s3 addons. Hrmmm. Might be boot looping. It's going through the comet and coming up to the white samsung, vibrates a few times after a bit and goes back to the comet with no sound.

Well I had to flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198234 to get CWM on mine. I haven't actually flashed anything with CWM because there doesn't seem to be any good roms for the 3.6 unless CM7 comes out sometime. I used Odin to flash a stock rom from here http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=166

Poop. I think I bootloped the sucker. I can use Odin to reflash the stock, rooted rom just like I did when I got it first rooted right? Do we have another rom for the 4.2 I could try flashing? Not sure why it has bootlooped. I even went back into CWM, did a factory reset, flashed only the rom (no addons) and same thing. Possible bad download? It is flashing from the internal SD as my CWM is not seeing my external SD.

I have been meaning to post this on the dev thread for awhile. I thought this problem might only be for certain people but I think it applies to US and maybe non-EU devices. I believe that the ChaOS ROM will bootloop on US (YP-GI1/XAA) devices if you do not install ChaOS's Enhanced Stock ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2279450) for whatever reason. I spent days trying to install his ROM and bootlooping.
The way I successfully installed (if I remember correctly):
-Do a factory reset of rooted stock ROM
-Boot to CWM (meaning you have already flashed the custom kernel) and install ChaOS's Enhanced Stock (put all install files on internal SD)
-Boot to CWM, wipe davlick cache under "advanced", wipe cache partition, and install the ChaOS ROM
-Wait a little while and your device should boot up properly
I hope this works for you. If it doesn't let me know and I can help you further. If this does work for you too then I will post this on the ROM's thread for other users.

ell there's not really much point in backing up the kernel when I've already downloaded it on my computer.
I've since flashed KingOS rom and don't really notice any differences at besides a few color changes... what's all the hype about?

Xen-it seems GPlayer development is still fairly newish. the work you see from devs now are all ground work. For the 4.2 and 3.6, they seem a little less dev populated than the 4 and 5. People will build upon the work of early devs and eventually get kernels that can OC and maybe ICS and JB roms. At this stage, we likely won't see anything like ZOMG earth shattering until people spend time with the devices. Seems Serk is on his way to doing the best he can for 4.2 but I am not sure who is tackling 3.6
It's weird how roms for devices go. I learned this when I had a tbolt and shockingly saw a FUNCTIONAL JB rom for my old Eris while the tbolt was still hanging back in ginger land with not even a really good ICS rom let alone JB. I asked the Tbolt community-why? How is it the dinosaur Eris has JB and not us? It all depends on what the devs can do with the sources provided. Sometimes certain hardware points are sticky. you can have beautiful JB rom for a device that can't talk to the camera if the hardware source isn't made available (reference the HP TP for many years)
For now, flash what you're comfortable with and and learn what you do and don't like. Also learn if you want to play things safe and not experiment or take on potentially beta builds. For the tbolt, tackling an ICS rom was too dicey so I never did. On my new Rezound, I eat up JB roms as they are in much better shape
My phone just gets stuck in a black screen when I try to boot into recovery. It happend once a few days ago, and i soloved it by going again to stock by odin and rooting it again. It booted to recovery the first time, i flashed carbon rom nightly 26 and now when I try to update, it doenst boot again. What is happening?

Firstly: Please give more detailed information (which kernel do you use, which ROM did you use before the problem occurred?)
Secondly: It is possible that you can't acess recovery mode anymore when flashing new updates. Happens with CM 10.2 OTA Update right now. The solution would be to flash a new recovery using Heimdall (Open-Source ODIN alternative) [Didn't try that, but should theoretically work] or, mor simple, a new kernel. Dorimany v9.34 is suited perfectly for that. Download here: http://dorimanx.shine.sk/ .

Well, i used Carbon Rom for a few weeks, so that was definitly the rom. Talking about the kernel, I dont even know how to install one.. haha Now in kernel version it says..

Yeah but even if I dont want to flash an update, just boot recovery, I cant. Have you any link to know about Heimdall? Or how to install Dorimany? Im a beginner I have to say.

You installed a Kernel while rooting your phone: Its the .tar that you have to put into the PDA section in ODIN. There are Kernels with .tar and .zip: .tar files are only flashable using Odin while .zip files are flashed using the recovery just like you flash ROMs. I guess your Kernel is a custom CM Kernel (CM for Cyanogen Mod). Carbon ROM is probably based on CM. There is currently no other workaround to get your recovery back then flashing a new kernel/recovery. I am currently working on an easy workaround for this problem, but it will take a while.
Dorimanx is downloadable here http://dorimanx.shine.sk/ and should be compatible: Just flash it like you did when rooting your phone in the beginning, just with Dorimanx .tar in PDA. Recovery should work again afterwards.

Yeah, I remember.. it was siyah kernel.
So in your opinion I should flash Dorimanx by Odin then? No other way to fix isnt it? and.. in dorimanx page, which one of all them should I download?

1. Yes you should
2. Not right now, maybe in the future, flashing recovery.img using Heimdall would probably help, but I didn't try it myself and using Heimdall is quite complex

But every aosp rom, like Carbon PA and these are based either in AOKP or CM, isnt it?
The newest one is 9/39, is that the one?

CM & AOKP are actually based on AOSP, so Yes, every AOSP ROM should work.

I did what you said and after installing Carbon Rom again recovery is gone.. so I suposse it is Carbon problem. I will do it again and install a different rom

I agree, the problem results of the ROM: But you have to flash dorimanx after carbon because carbon replaces the current kernel with its own CM custom Kernel. It should work just fine with carbon when it's flashed after installing carbon.

I wish to install a newer ROM than the one I currently have, yet it seems I might need a new kernel and CWM instead if TWRP.
So my questions are:
1. How do I know if I need a new kernel?
2. At some kernel threads, it is said that they only work with kitkat ROMs for example, and other ROMs might brick the phone with this kernel.
So do I flash a new kernel first or a new ROM first? Basically, how do I not brick my phone?
3. I read somewhere that SGS2 users can't install recovery without installing a new kernel. Is it true?
4. I would appreciate some directions about installing a new recovery (I would probably need CWM).
5. Why is it so hard to find answers to these probably many times asked questions?

1 - if you are happy with your current rom, dont flash a kernel if not sure what you are doing!
2 - kk and LP kernels are not compatible between them as your cpu doesn't fit in a incompatible motherboard ! newer kernels are safe from brickbug ! you wont brick your phone with a wrong kernel (kk kernel over LP rom), just a bootloop.
3 - because a kernel is a recovery and a recovery is a kernel.
4 - Slimsaber is a good rom to start see first and second post
5 - is not hard to find if you know were to look!

Just a small correction. A recovery (CWM or TWRP) can not be installed by itself because we don't have a recovery partition. Therefore kernel with a custom recovery needs to be installed.

1. I am happy with the current ROM, yet I want to flash the kernel to fix the annoying FPBug and to finally get LP ROM. And I might not know what am I doing, but if I won't try I will never know
I've flashed a new kernel and a new LP ROM, and I'm trying some others.
I still find it difficult to find a kernel that answers my needs since many kernels are hiding in specific posts and some kernel threads doesn't mention which recovery they install.
