NVIDIA Shield Tablet-- Should I buy it? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was looking and I got to know about the NVIDIA Shield Tab.. It has the latest Nvidia processor: NVIDIA K1. And all specs are good. I wanted to know that is it worth it? I am a gamer and My Acer Iconia Tab A700 doesn't run some heavy games smoothly. For example, FiFA 14, Need For Speed Most Wanted and many more. Plus its RAM is always about 80% occupied...
Thanks in advance...

From the information I've seen on the device it's shaping up to be an excellent device, with top of the line performance at a very reasonable price. It will run all your games smoothly, plus it has support for all of Nvidia's extra features such as game streaming, and the stylus is supposed to be one of the best out there. Considering the A700 is over 2 years old if your looking to upgrade the Shield Tablet is shaping up to be a great choice. For future reference all device advice, and what should I buy discussion should be asked in this thread .

If your looking to upgrade from your old A700, I would say it is definitely worth it. It is not only a very very good tablet, but is also a good gaming tablet with many features. It's mostly stock android, and it runs smooth as hell. I just got mine yesterday and I have yet to see it lag or stutter with any thing that I do with it. If your worried about it being only 16GB, don't be. So far everything that I have installed on it, I have been allowed to move to my SD card. That's the good thing about his tablet, it's not like most devices with KitKat 4.4 , where moving apps to the SD card is very limited. Nvidia has done a good job at making it a necessity to move things to the SD card considering its core focus is gaming. Be aware though in order to stream PC games, your desktop or laptop has to have a minimum of a GTX 650 video card. I have the shield portable as well, so I was already good to go in that department. For the price IMO you cannot go wrong. It is both a good tablet and a good portable gaming rig. You really can't go wrong.

What he ^ said. This tablet is hella bangin for the price.

Yes you should, just like I should...

Hope this clarifies everything

Love the Tablet
So i have had the Shield Tablet for 2 weeks. The thing is a beast. Not only does it play games well on the tablet itself, its ability to put the tablet screen up on my HD tv via HDMI is a nice perk. It allows me to play titan fall in my house on any TV. The thing is just a beast it powers through anything i have thrown at it so far.

Looking for a Tablet

Hello,
Here's my situation, my AMD laptop died, so I bought another for school, but the only one fast enough for my needs sported a 15.6" display.
Unfortunately, that means that it is too large to use on my commute for homework and/or reading textbooks.
So I was looking for a decently cheap tablet of roughly 7"-9" for $200-$250 Canadian.
My eye caught this: http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/prod...spx?path=d8681b33552db55b5d0936b6fd46521den02
The lenovo ideapad. What kind of performance could I expect compared to my captivate? And how well would it integrate with my Ice Cream Sandwich powered Captivate? Would it work like blackberry bridge with the Playbook?
Thanks ahead of time for the help
Is the Kindle Fire available in Canada? It has a dual core OMAP 4 series dual core processor compared with the single core OMAP 3 in the Ideapad. Besides for that RAM and resolution are the same and the Ideapad has a microSD slot. If you plan on carrying a lot of movies/music then it may be a better idea to go for the Ideapad.
The Fire requires a little modding to get the true Android tablet experience, but it will have good developer support here on XDA. The Ideapad isn't bad though, it looks like it will get an official ICS update where as the Kindle Fire will probably be stuck with unofficial ROMs
Thanks for the reply, I'll have a look as soon as I get to a computer.

Get the kindle fire if its available in Canada you won't be disappointed. You would have to root it to get the full experience but its REALLY worth it especially if you flash an ICS ROM.

I googled the kindle, and amazon ships internationally, is this it? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051QVF7A/?tag=gocous-20&hvadid=8782576877&ref=pd_sl_1jz3836cn0_b
EDIT: I gather that this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugy3pQWSUGo&ob=av3n is it rather than the link above. The review seems pretty decent, however I did get a chance to try out that lenovo tablet in my local futureshop, and that device SCREAMS. I was blown away at the performance considering it is basically the same under the hood as my cell phone. I'm going to do a bit more research on both the kindle fire and the lenovo, as well as some shopping around in my area, thanks for the recommendations.

[Q] Which tablet to get?

Hi guys i need help/advice on what type of tab to get. I only got $250 so i can't get much.
Main things i want in a TAB:
Dual Core
Able to get latest android *SOMEHOW*
Good battery life
Camera(depends though not NEEDED)
The tabs i had in mind are:
Acer Iconia A100
HP Touchpad
Kindle Fire
What would be the best option of those 3 or at least something thats better or comparable and in my price range
I think you should wait up and read on the nexus tablet that's rumored. It is meant to be cheap but not have the BEST hardware add a result, but of course those are rumors

Capacitive, ICS Z& 1.5 Gig Cortex? Not bad
the resolution kills it for me
Circuit city.com is where I got mine from. After playing around with them I decided I had to have 10". If you can pull together a little more funds you can get a refurbed Acer a500 for $299 or a galaxy tab for $329. Or wait a little bit longer for the tegra 3s to come out and the price of the tegra 2s will hit rock bottom.
Kindle Fire...
decided to get a HP Touchpad 32GB for $200
ICS runs nice on it
thanks everyone

I bought my Nook Tablet for the RAM...

So...one of the big reasons that I bought my Nook Tablet was for the RAM. Yeah, the display is better than the Kindle fire, but when it comes down to it, one of the major differences is the RAM and the SD slot. When it comes to the potential for development I figured that those 2 variables would make a big difference...
How many of you did the same thing? Do you feel like it was the right decision? I follow the development thread daily, and it seems promising... Then I look at the kindle fire threads and feel sad.
Sigh...
I'm no longer sad. Thanks everyone! We'll have ICS running soon. Can't wait.
same here. we have the same sediments.
.
i have a hong kong tablet ( haipad ) also with half the memory and so it does not run as zippy as the nook... my next tablet will be an iPad 3 ( just joking... )
Patience is a virtue.
Remember Kindle is sold worldwide, Nook Tablet is USA only.
Better screen sd slot and double memory is a kill feature, i bet a lot of kindle owners envy us
I live in Cyprus (Europe) and i paid $250+$48 delivery + $45 VAT and taxes and am still very happy with my buy and i dont even have warranty and am the only one to have this tablet in my Country.
I paid 250 + 16 us tax + free shipping to my DinersBox (credit card service) in Miami +10- shipping to Equator .

I considered the extra memory and microSD slot when I decided to buy the NT. Since I've owned it and played with a friend's Kindle Fire, I appreciate these two things even more, plus the better screen. The Fire doesn't zeem as "zippy" as the NT, and I like the NT reader better. The ability to boot of the microSD is something I now consider a "must have" feature, so I'm really happy I didn't buy a Kindle Fire. I came close, but actually played with both at a store the day they came out -- and promptly bought the NT. We now have two of them.
Great points. I haven't really had a chance to play with the kindle fire.. Knowing that you can tell a difference gives me confidence that I made the right decision.
I tried out both the kindle fire and the nook tablet for a little while from people who had them at my school. In the end the determining factor was the UI. They're both god awful but I like the NT's desktop approach as opposed to the carousel view. The specs were nice too but I had no idea I was going to be rooting and flashing roms on it. I think I made the right choice and I don't regret a thing.

Being able to get the Google Play Store without any internal modification (thanks to the SD card) is huge and reason enough to have the Nook Tablet. And no hardware volume switch would drive me nuts.
That said, my Dad recently got a Kindle Fire and it ran pretty smoothly with much better non vibrating speakers (probably the thing I envy most!) I didn't detect any major difference in performance when I compared Flash video streaming so perhaps the Kindle RAM is sufficient at least for now.

Yep... me too
I bought this for my wife. (I buy things I like and give them to people, who knows what they want as a gift). She liked it out of the box, but my primary purpose was to root and explore. It is definitely one of the best pieces of hardware available within that price range. I still haven't rooted, but the fact that I'm in this forum means it wont be long now. Can't wait to break out of the BN cage.
I bought the NT as an extra device to play with. So far I'm happy with my purchase.
Sent from my Nook Tablet using Tapatalk 2
I love my NT. Played with the ipad 2 and just felt it was too bulky and hard to read from. The kindle fire had a good feel and I didn't notice a lag in speed but what at really sold me on the NT was the sd card slot. And I'm happy with the mods I've made. All in all, a great buy!
I sampled a series of android tablets before ending up with the NT. Through careful purchasing (and returns) I tried out an unmodified NT first, a Lenovo K1, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and a Lenovo A1. I bought the final NT and rooted and installed CM7.
I find I like the 7in. form factor much more that the 10in. I miss the cameras, gps and bluetooth. I pretty much got the NT as an interim tablet, to use and play around with until the new stuff comes out later this year. I'm actually looking forward to the Win8 tablets.

Nope, we have 2 'ducati' cores that are specifically used for graphics and video decoding. Those haven't been utilized (I think) in any ROMs up till now. Ducati cores require their own special 'governor/kernel elements. Rebellos' job is to write these kernel elements and we are sending him a Nook as we speak. So we will have our normal dual core 1ghz processor with the addition of our 2 ducati cores. 2+2=4 4=quad. We've got a quad core tablet on our hands gentlemen.

I was about to take xperia z2 tablet but there are threads in xda supporting the cons i mentioned below , so i myself am waiting.
Xperia z2
cons : slight bend after few weeks of usage , creaking sounds, low build quality, touch screen issues
pros : sleek and light weight , snapdragon 801 , waterproof (low build quality destroys it tho) , larger screen
nvidia shield will be available from 29th july why not wait a week and decide after you read its reviews too.
Things to observe in NVIDIA SHIELD reviews
Heat , battery life , stylus performance , UI lag

My Z2 tablet works like a charm. I have no problems, except of the occasional touch issues. It's not a deal breaker, though. Also I'd simply install CM if I wouldn't be satisfied with the stock ROM.

Don't expect too much of Nvidia:
You can connect a PS3 controller on the Z2, too. I use the sixaxis controller app, but there is an app from Sony installed per default, too.
Almost all Android games are optimized for the Snapdragon SoCs because of Nvidia's miniscule market share. Tegra zone apps are the only ones which are Nvidia-optimized, but lately there were not much new games released AFAIK.
I had the TF201 and TF700. Especially Gameloft games were running on low settings, even back then when the tablet was new. Of course you can try out GLTools, but it's hit and miss.
The shield of course also has its strengths, but don't assume that Android games run better than on a Snapdragon 801.
When I look at Nvidia's track regarding their SoCs, I am pessimistic about their future market share. Hence I expect not much games to be Nvidia-optimized. That's why I wanted the Snapdragon 801 and nothing else.
Of course I dislike monoplies and wish Nvidia the best, but realistically I cannot see them succeeding.

Thx for the balance response, I have not made my decision yet, I have been using Sony for ages, I willing to test something new, the only thing that worries me is the fact that android games aren;t working as great as I would image e.i gameloft. I will not buy it until finishing my master degree, otherwise i will go nuts...
Touch issues pretty much gone after latest update. And I for one have zero build issues. Some people do but what's the bet some people do on the shield as well.

Hello now that both the z2 and nvidia shield have been out for a while what are your thoughts and experiences on both devices please?

Nexus 9 (Hopefully) or Nvidia Sheild Tablet?

Hi all, first of all I hope this is the right section (forgive me mods and admins if not.) Secondly I'm looking to buy a tablet running Nvidia hardware for their optimized games and since I'm a Google fanboy the nexus 9 is at the top of my wishlist. I was just wondering as far as hardware goes, which is faster? I know they have the same processor and gpu but the nexus 9's is 64 bit which will make it the winner right? Also is the nexus 9's Kepler GPU on par with the Shield tablets Kepler GPU, and does the Nexus 9 have all the optimizations and benefits of the Nvidia Tablet?
How much do you have to spend? At this stage, if I didn't have a n9 already, I'd be looking into the Google Pixel C
Sadley I'm on a 300$ budget. I know what you mean, the Pixcel C looks like the tablet to have for a power user but I won't have the resources sadley.
I have both the N9 & the Shield tab. IMO the Shield is the better device. This doesn't mean that the N9 is a bad one. But for pure media consumtion like watching movies, videos and ofcourse playing games go for the Shield. In games the Shield performs better and you will never notice any heat. Its also near stock and latest 5.1.1 runs really great. As for flashing roms its not the best option, but you see N9 has also not alot.
But as always its your choice

I haven't seen any reputable stores sell it anymore. It's off Amazon, Newegg, and even Nvidia's site now.
Thanks for the reply! Will consider when buying! Can you explain why the Shield Tablet isn't the best for flashing? That's usually what I like in a device but I can reconsider because I'm looking at these at a gaming tablet standpoint.
Nexus 9 has a lot of problems. I have my 2nd tablet and its still messed up.
