Hi,
i'm just finished rooting my device (HDX 7, 64GB), installed Safestrap, created a backup from the recovery, created a new rom-slot, restored the backup to the new rom-slot, and now .. ?
I want to stay with the amazon-rom, not the gapps-rom.
would it be better to make modifikations to stock rom slot (i have a backup, so hey ?!) or would you work on the rom-slot-1 copy leaving the stock rom slot untouched ?
If the latter, what would you suggest for a data-patition-size for the daily-use rom-copy? 16G?
thanks for reading,
macfly.

Always do all your modifications to your slot. Only modification I would do to stock at all would be to run the OTA blocker . Personally when I set up my slot I increased my cache partition by a hundred megabytes then used up all available or close as possible for my data partition and I have not had any problems with any apps games or downloads installing .. Now the Rom partition or system partition is not adjustable and sometimes can become too large to install or modify any system applications you might want to install such as gapps . Personally I use titanium back up to watch my system partition (rom size) and uninstall a few of their system applications that I did not use to make room .

I plan to try my hand at installing some custom roms in the near future to gain some more experience of my rooted device and to see what the other roms have to offer. Before I do I want to make a complete back up and keep this on my computer hard drive so that I can go back to my stock unrooted rom as it is now.
I have TWRP installed and can boot into the recovery menu
The back up option comes with a number of items already selected but some are not - what it is showing is:
+System (1148 MB)
+Data (2691 MB)
+Boot (8 MB)
NS Recovery (8 MB)
NS Cache (17 MB)
NS efs (8 MB)
(settings)
+Enable Compression
+Skip MD5 created during back up
it is also set to back up to external SD rather than internal storage
Do I need to select any of the unselected items for a full back up?
Do I need to change any of the selected settings (+ = pre-selected NS= not selected)
This should I believe give me a full back up to restore my phone to its complete original, but rooted, state!
From what I have read I then need to do another data back up to recover my data and apps to a newly installed custom rom - this seems logical to me as I wouldn't want to try and write system files from the stock rom over the system files of my new custom rom
I have read the forums, and several others, so what I am trying to do is to clarify my understanding of them is correct- I know that installing a custom rom is bread and butter to most of you but for me it is the most scary thing I have tried (at least it will be the first time.
Initially all I want to do is install several different roms one at a time to see what they do and what advantages / disadvantages they have for me - it is likely I will use each one for a couple of days (weekends) and then restore the stock rooted rom for use during the week when I need my phone to be reliable. Is this a good (and realatively safe) plan?
Thanks guys
First backup just your efs partition, copy the backup to your PC, dropbox, attic and anywhere else you can find - this is the most important step of all before flashing anything on your phone. Don't enable compression or skip the MD5 creation.
The standard Nandroid backup will return your phone to it's current state so yes, that part of your plan will work.
Don't restore data, or anything else, to your new ROM via recovery- you'll just break it unless it's exactly the same build version e.g. 4.1.2 and even then it's not recommended. You can backup and restore apps and their data safely using titanium, but no system apps or settings etc.
Do a full wipe of system, data, cache and dalvic between ROMs and you shouldn't have problems, also before restoring the earlier Nandroid backup.
Finally, have the correct modem and RIL for your country in a CWM flashable form on your external SD card - many ROMs contain the wrong modem and will result in no connection when you first boot then.
Hi all,
I've a XT910 with this rooted android version : Jelly Bean OTA 982.124.14.XT910.Retail.en.EU. Now I want to do a copy of the stock rom and I want to install the copy in the Slot Rom 1 with Safestrap. Can I do it with Backup/Restore option in Safestrap ? Can someone tell me the right steps ? If I can't do that with Safestrap, is there another way ? Thanks for any reply.
Cheers
Stefano.

why do you want to do that? keep your stock ROM as your backup if anything happens when installing other ROMs on other slot.
anyway, i recommend you to install Boot Menu Manager . its more easier to use. you can backup your system and data in the recovery, and you can restore it on other slot. you can also do this on safestrap.
R: [Q] Mirroring of Stock ROM
I want to do that because I want to modify my stock rom. I've tryed to restore my stock rom in slot 1, but it didn't work. I've tryed also to copy system partition and I tryed to build a custom rom with the extracted system... But it didn't work either. In the second way, after few minutes it appeared the android logo with a warning. Sorry for my english....thx in advice

it should work. I did the same thing. I made a backup of my stock 4.1.2 and then re-created rom slot 1 and restored the backup i just made of my stock to that I could modifiy it to my liking with out having to worry about messing up my safeside stock.
Did your backup of stock have Voodoo OTA protected SU. If it did try disabling voodoo su protection and then make a backup. Otherwise when you restore you end up with just a black screen sometimes. also delete rom slot 1 and re-receate it then install backup.
R: [Q] Mirroring of Stock ROM
What did you use to backup? Safestrap or BMM? Did you backup only system partition or system/data partition?

Ok, I found the problem. The size of my system partition ( done by SafeStrap ) is 640 MB. However the backup of my system stock partition is 711 MB. Safestrap doesn't warn me about the overflow. How can I shrink the system backup ? Is there a way to improve the size of system partiotion ?
Hi, i'm new in this so i just need answers for couple of questions.
1. Can I flash new ROM from phone storage or does it have to be from SD card?
2. If i flash from SD, will new ROM be installed on phone storage or SD card?
3. When i do that, will all my data be deleted from previous ROM?
4. When i flash ROM do i need to again root my phone and install titanium backup?
5. what Custom ROM's are really good? your suggestions
1. Can I flash new ROM from phone storage or does it have to be from SD card?
depending on what kind of custom recovery you are using, you can install it from internal phone storage and sd card. Use philz touch recovery to have both storages available for you to choose roms from
2. If i flash from SD, will new ROM be installed on phone storage or SD card?
if performing a clean flash all data from phone would be lost as the primary step itself is to wipe data. Data on external sd card remains intact as long as you dont format it from recovery
3. When i do that, will all my data be deleted from previous ROM?
all data would be lost when you do a data wipe and devs take no responsibility for any loss wrt to your phone or data and so their piece of advice before you flash ANY rom or mod is to : Back up Back up and Back up. Use titanium backup to retain apps and a nandroid backup from recovery to be on safe side and stay away from after effects of a bad rom flash.
4. When i flash ROM do i need to again root my phone and install titanium backup?
rooting phone again is not required after installing custom roms since they already have the SU binaries included when the rom is cooked. Installation of Titanium back up after every rom Installation is must cuz itz an app on your phone memory
5. what Custom ROM's are really good?
again depends on what you like to see on your phone. If you like having the stock look on your phone and still enjoy benefits of using a rooted custom rom go for roms based on sammy firmwares. If you want to go a step ahead and have a nexusish look on your phone and be more open source go for CM and AOSP roms
thats not all. XDA has a lot of threads about flashing roms and recoveries. Do a lot of reading and proceed carefully at your own risk before playing with your phone.
Cheers
Well its so easy..
1- yup you can..
2- no it will be installed on te phone..
3- most of the roms are rooted.. but you can instal supersu.zip to root it or update the root panery, and you mostly will not lose the costem recovery..but some romes offer to download custom recoverys..
4- i think temask's unofficial cm11 is good.. and you can install omega touchwiz rom..:good:

watz NEXUS OPERATING SYSTEM .... D-UH
I'm currently running a cm 12.1 official nightly that's about a month old on my XT1022 and it says that cm 13 (nightly) is finally available for my phone as an update......
When I install this update, do I lose all my data and start over? All the stock cm12.1 apps that i deleted or replaced, do they return? Also i'm running TK Gapps (the latest release), so do I need to reflash it after installation? My recovery is TWRP (The latest version). Will I have to root again?

System update won't cause data loss but a nandroid backup is always recommended.
Stock apps of cm12.1 won't come but the stock apps of cm13 (this might include common apps like browser or file manager).
Yes you have to flash gapps again. You may not have to root again coz supersu comes with a backup script. (this applies to gapps too, some comes with backup script. So to be safe flash gapps again just in case)

Would I have to flash my custom Kernel (Zapdos) again? Also, What about the apps that Iconverted to system apps?
Yes you have to flash your custom kernel again after updating.
Those apps will be removed you have to download them again and make them system app.
Do one thing, the apps you moved to system, convert them back to user apps and then do a nandroid backup.
This because when you'll update rom data of those apps might remain and conflict when you'll download them again.
When I realized the update on my phone ... the apricativos part were , but I ended up doing a clean . I thought it would appear the option to restore a backup of Moto And normally the Google saves the information , but Will not appeared.

Yes, but in the previous ROMs same to make a clean completely, the time that appears the first screens to set up your machine ... provided the option to restore the latest handset by Google settings.
[Another noob question]
Is there a way to flash a custom ROM (like CM13) on SGSD then restore old user apps & data? I've read a few articles online but i doubt they work with our device. (Most include making nandroid backups on recovery and then restoring only the data.)
Hoped there'd be a way for this other than backing up all data on a PC.
Thx to whoever answers.

Different rom has different style of data storing.
So data from stock rom/cm10/11 wont work on cm 13.
But still u can try and see if it works.
Get a TWRP recovery,
Go to backup and then backup data only(u will see tick-marks and u will be able to choose what exactly u wanna backup).
Then flash a new rom and restore backed up data.
And u can backup the whole rom and restore back if u don't like the new rom.

On TWRP,u will b able to choose what u really wanna backup.
Eg - kernel,system(os),data,ems,bin
But on cwm there's only one option.
Backing up the entire rom.

Ok, so i'm going to flash a new ROM cause i find the stock rooted slower since my SGSD is really old. Can you suggest some ROMs with better I/O speed, little to no lags, or anything that's suitable for slightly heavy use everyday? Many thanks.
