hello there
before my new s3, I owned an i9000, it had a slow cpu but the microphone recorder was great. nice and clear, no complaints.
the s3 on the other hand sounds like a cheap dictaphone with codec artefacts, hiss and dynamic compression, not good.
has anyone found a fix to bypass all this processing so we can record directly into a HQ wav recorder untouched? ? if not, I need to sell my new S3 and buy an i9000 again, as i need it for sound recording interviews, things like that, with a password protect, the i9000 was perfect for this, but very slow cpu. I hear the s4 and s2 are not great either for sound recording compared to the s1.
just found that the s3 has a Wolfson WM1811 the s1 has a Wolfson WM8994E. maybe this is the issue for the input quality?
thanks for help : )

HI,
I want to see if the problem is only with me. Right now I'm really disappointed from Samsung. here shows comparison of camera quality:
iphone 4:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKm-7rzfS2g&feature=player_embedded#at=124
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGAteITuZVo&feature=player_embedded#at=59
s2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TFm93qvGnU&feature=player_embedded#at=65
Quality absolutely awful compared to the iPhone 4, there are quite strong background noise (Even I was recording in a completely quiet room I can hear background noise)...
* I will note that the Hacked Camera.APK mod of Potatoman still did not help
Is my cell phone is broken or simply Samsung had blown it???
it seems that you were standing right infont of the left loud speaker, were with the iphone it seams the guy way in the middle. so it wont get so much distortion.
I have the same problem with my S2 when the outside audio level is high.
NIK516
i far from the speakers , the iphone 4 is closer to the speakers
and you can hear the different.
and i have more video that you can hear that iPhone better if you wants..
i try to fix the S2 problem mic record not to compare.
thanks
Are you certain you installed the Camera.apk correctly? 6 seconds should equal roughly 12Mb (stock is about 9). If anything this is either the modded camera (When I used it the audio was very shrill, much like the video you recorded. This is due to the larger sampling and bit rates.), Samsung screwed up (maybe this is just how the mic records), OR you were standing in a poor location (the two video weren't recorded in the same place from the look of it).
I think that being close to a speaker should not be a problem if the auto-volume adjustment worked properly. What we are trying to understand here is if this is just a problem with our devices or a general issue. Is there anybody who can confirm that videorecording live music performances with the S2 does NOT produce distorted audio?

Same problem here as well...
same problem, please help
Same problem! I would love to see a fix for that. Even a little bit of wind will screw up the sounds completely. I'm also looking for an external mic now....
It looks like you can't use an external mic either...

I just did a test with 2 different earbuds w/mic. the Camera app doesn't seem to use the external microphone when recording video, it just uses the internal mic. When I used the voice recorder app it does indeed use the external mic and makes a huge difference.

I have the same problem (record in a quite room with no noise, then when i play it back there's a hiss)
I've checked Youtube and there's only 1 video demonstrates this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pePAqjgugHM
Now is this a fault with the phone or can I fix it? Just wanted to ask before I send it back to Samsung.
The white noise (hissing sound) comes from a plastic piece inside the phone that is over the microphone. Removing it removes the white noise. You cannot do this without voiding the warranty, so bringing it down to the service center would be a good idea.
The plastic piece over the mic is like cupping your ears with your hands. HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Now that I am on Android 2.3.4, recording video using an external microphone works. I used your headphone mic and I got rid of the distortion. Has anyone tried the Brando Mini Capsule Microphone (or any other mini microphone) on their SII?
I've noticed the past few times that i've been recording at events like night clubs, the playback would always be really messy and alot of broken bass sounds. I uploaded a youtube video to show you what I mean. I've compared this to the iPhone 4s and the iphone has no broken bass and it really clear, just wondering if anyone had any experience with this problem and what solutions can be done
s2 sound is bad in nature. Try to record with lgcamera app, you can change sound settings more than stock camera app, or look for the modified camera apk in this forum.
SGS2 does not play well at the low end of the spectrum
You want distorted bass try one of the many sound fixes posted on XDA .

Buy an iPhone 4S (Yes you asked for this because you mentioned/compared the iPhone on a forum devoted to the SGS2)
I agree with you, the Samsung Galaxy S2 has bad/poor sound quality, even much worse than Nokia N82, for example. You can note it when using phone's speakers. This is one of the worst things the SGS2 has.
Why would you want to record night clubs? Shouldn't you be grinding?
Hey guys!
I still have not ordered the s3 because of the lack of availability of the blue model.
And i have a (for me) important questions to people owning the device:
How is the sound quality of the microphone at high volumes?
Videos from S2 at concerts, festivals or bigger (louder) parties are simply unwatchable because of the really poor sound quality. Other phones do that way way better. So could someone test it for me??
Greetings
X
Apparently it's dreadful, worse than the SGS2. There are at least two relevant threads I've seen if you want more info.
Can't say it worries me, tbh, but each to their own..
Hmm
I have not found any thread for that. I guess it wont be possible to do much about it with software...?
funny to hear that... first thing my girlfriend told me after i called her the first time with the S3 was that the sound-quality is much worse than on the htc.
but honestly... not my problem, especially since the speakers are much louder and clearer on the S3
Does the S3 record in stereo like the One X or is it just mono? because I know it should be capable by using the noise cancelling Mic.

Good question- this could be the reason for a bad quality..
Yes the S3 does record video in stereo and from all the YouTube videos I have seen, they still have reversed mics just like the S2 has.
hey guys i am just curious will the wolfson DAC give a better sound quality while listening to music over bluetooth than phones with other DACs like the galaxy note
i'm not really an expert on this. But from what i've read and gathered, the wolfson chip used in the International S3 is of extremely high quality. Its supposed to produce some really good sound. Better sound than the S2 and the Note.
Theres a whole thread dedicated to the sound quality. The only 'issue' i've seen is some people saying the volumes too low, but theres already a mod and everybodys waiting on "Voodoo" sound which is supposed to make it even more kick ass

Answer: no!
The internal dac is not used when you use a bluetooth headset
Coming from a SGS, having Voodoo Sound makes my SGS sound amazing. I've read that SGS2 is a disappointment when it comes to sound quality so I'm wondering here, aside from the Equalizer app, is there a way to get the sound quality to be similar to that of Voodoo Sound?

There nothing similar to voodoo sound.
However, PowerAmp will blow your mind away with its sound quality. That amazing music player produces the best sound quality ever and has made me forgive my galaxy SII ever since I got it.
