I'm running SC 2.9.1. When I try to listen to music, the music players don't locate or the songs don't show up in the play list. When I try the stock player, I get a Vcast error "Would you like to down music"? When I try the music player that comes on SC 2.9.1, nothing shows up in the view. The same thing happens when I use WinAmp. I've renamed the music folder a few times and still no luck.
Should I reinstall SC 2.9 and then 2.9.1 update? Or has anyone else had this problem and solved it?
This is driving me crazy!!!
Thanks
It sounds to me like you may have a .nomedia file on your sdcard. Search for any file named .nomedia that is on your sdcard and delete them, reboot and when media scanner does it thing it'll find your music. I haven't heard this problem from other users so I would suspect that this is the culprit.

It worked!! Thanks for the help. I've been searching and posting for a solution, it you had it.
You are DA MAN!!!
Peace
After I deleted the .nomedia file and rebooted the SF, I was able to see and play the music files. But then I rebooted the SF, the .nomedia files comes back. It keeps doing this everytime I reboot the phone, so this doesn't allow me to play media files. I have to delete the .nomedia files everytime after I reboot to play media files.
Is there an application that will remove .nomedia? Does anyone know a way to remove the file permanantly?
Thanks
Sounds like you have a script that is attempting to speed up your media scanner, I don't know what you have on your phone so I can't help you solve your problem.
I'll make a suggestion though, use an app that makes the Media Scanner scan, for example "Rescan Media Root" which is free on the market. After you delete the .nomedia file, just run the app instead of rebooting. Should be quicker than what you're doing right now. But in regards to stopping the .nomedia file from coming back eventually, dunno.
i love u man !!!! i had this problem for 2 days, i changed every thing but didnt work
thanks aloooooooooot
( happy tears
this solution worked great! thank you so much!
Has anyone noticed this? I filled my SD card with songs via isyncr but the music app wont recognize atleast 200 of the songs. It gets the name of the song right but no artist or album. First I thought that it was a problem with iSyncr, so I did again with double twist. Same problem. Then I took the card out and put it in a Droid X and I found that all of the songs are easily recognized with Album and Artist names. So it seems that the problem is with the galaxy s2.
Has anyone else noticed this or am I doing something wrong? Does anyone know how to fix this?
anyone who has this problem?
Yes someone else posted similar on general .

slightly off-topic, but what is the general way which people use to put music on this device? Do you just create a Music folder and drag and drop? Do you use that **** kies program?
When I've tried only Kies seems to work, and it just dumps the files into /media. When I try to copy via USB directly windows gives copy errors..
Mine are all AAC+ and i just cut and past to a folder .

Hey everyone, have a question regarding dropbox.
I just installed it on my tab to watch a video that was sent to me. When I tried to watch it I think it took me to my mobo player, but I got a msg stating that no media directory was selected.
Anyone able to tell me what this was about? Does it mean that the file format is not supported? It gave me options to select a folder from my tab. Not sure if that was to try and find a player or the video that I was trying to watch... thanks for the help! PS,the video said .mov , wasn't sure if hat was the format or just stating that it was a video.
Sorry for the noobness...thanks again!
Not sure about the format issue, and never used Mobo player... And I did know/ don't think you could stream videos directly from dropbox. But would be interested in this.

I don't think that dropbox on the tab works the way it does on a PC. It doesn't download all the content, just grabs it off the net when you request a document. You could probably move a video from your dropbox to a folder on your tab, but I don't think that dropbox would support streaming.
Let us know if you get this to work though; would be great to be able to stream directly through dropbox!
If Dropbox actually downloaded it, you'd get a message in the notification tray, and the file would be in the Dropbox folder on your Tab.
There's only a few programs that work directly out of Android Dropbox (Aldiko will install epubs from there, and of course APK files are ran).
Whenever I try to copy an MKV file to my Prime, there is a loooooooong delay where nothing happens, then finally a screen pops up that says something like "this file might not play properly, are you sure you want to copy it?". When I hit "yes", it copies just fine.
Does anyone know of a way to keep this from happening? My MKV files play just fine with MX Video player, so it's a pain to have to deal with this annoying delay every single time.

Depends where that file type check is done. If it's in the USB driver, there is no way of getting rid of it other than hack the driver or use another one.
Do you use Asus software to copy the file or do you just use the prime as usb storage and copy it?
My Prime is on it's way to me, as soon as it's here I'll upgrade to ICS (rollout in Germany just began) and check on movie files.
Same on every Android device.
Got the question you get with everyone of my Android devices I have had. but I don't have that delay you mention.
Isn't even a problem, just click yes.
This message is just a heads up that it might not work properly. And how can Android or Windows know if you have installed a program that can play those files?
Think the problem is more your computer than Prime. when it comes to send files its most time the computer that is the problem.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Problem is that the Prime connects as an MTP device. This in conjunction with the MTP/USB driver used could be the problem. Run "devmgmt.msc" from Win+R to get to the device manager and check if "Asus MTP device" is properly installed, if not, update the driver (if possible).
Question pops up instantaneously for me.
I think this is DRM related issue. It seems like the prime has no option (or purposely removed) to be mounted as Mass USB Storage. The only option available is to mount it as MTP or as a Camera.
I can copy small files in and out fine with MTP. However, I think it checks for file types and warn/deny certain ones that the prime should not be able to play, even though you have an app installed you know can play it. It's really annoying specially when copying multiple files and you come back to your computer to find out it stopped copying because of a stupid warning or question.
Whenever I copy large or small .mkv files, explorer.exe just tanks and quits. I think ICS or some DRM app is doing this on purpose for movie files. .avi files seems fine but gives a warning. But when all else fails, I can pull out the external sdcard and copy the files through a reader.
Is there a way to force it to mount as as a USB Mass Storage device like my other android device? Or was this option removed now from ICS as Google gets stricter with DRM related issues? I wonder if the Nexus can be mounted as a USB Mass Storage rather than MTP?
Any ideas guys?
PS. It's kind of silly that they brag you play HD movies and the screen can show them in HD, but you can't copy any HD formatted files either because of DRM restrictions or the sdcard format can only handle movies with 4gb or less (which is not HD quality anymore). The only thing its good for is to shoot your own HD videos with the camera and play that video in HD, which you can do with your phone better since it's smaller and easier to maneuver.
And they say the new T700 is coming out with 1080p, I say its useless unless they can mount the drives with ntfs or ext4 with faster read/write throughput to prevent lags.
I can't explain the delay before getting the prompt, but here's an explanation straight from a Google engineer for why the Prime doesn't have USB Mass Storage enabled.

Pfft, at least you can copy MKV files to your Prime directly . I had to transfer 13GB of files to a USB, transfer them to my netbook and then from the Netbook to my MicroSD card in an SD card adapter all because my MicroSD to USB adapter broke and I can't transfer directly to the Prime

That still doesn't explain why some files would transfer fine while others do not. Have you tried transferring a .mkv file (let say 2gb) and see if it works? It crashes for me. As for other file types, I get ask stupid questions.

It wasn't meant to explain that. It was only meant to explain why there is no USB Mass Storage.
I highly doubt it's a DRM problem because I'm able to copy .mkv files over. The only thing I have to do is confirm that I want to copy it, because it will complain that it might not be able to play that file type.
FYI
Android is smth like linux (FAT drive) you are UNALBE to TRANSFER ANY SINGLE FILE MORE THAN 2GB thru usb.
micro sd card is limit to 4 GB if i'm not wrong.
the BEST solution is network transfer with ES file explorer, itz good to invest on NAS aka network drive now, SCREW USB.
set yourself free, no more limitation and driver ****...
aragorn182,
So you can copy .mkv files fine. Hmm I guess I'll try reformatting my micro sdcard coz its acting flaky and try again. Thanks, at least I have some confirmation it works for others. Funny thing is, I can copy into it if I pull it out and put it into my card reader.
With regards to NAS. I already have NAS at home and the WD Live (3 of them) so I can watch movies in each room. Problem is, I want to watch movies on my tablet when I'm traveling long flights (starting to tire of carrying my laptop, tablet is so much lighter). At home, Its kind of useless to watch movies on my tablet when my TV is bigger and I have media players to play them. Lol, even my computer monitor is bigger
u can use network transfer to ur prime...not asking u to stream...
you wont have any problem with file size or type when using network transfer to your prime. since u have NAS make for use of it.
I've copied a few gigs of MKVs to my Prime (both internal storage and microsd) and had no problems. Windows 7 does tells me the little error message about how the thing might not play the format back properly (I wonder why that error shows up considering the Prime can at least playback H.264 with AAC audio in MKV using the native video player).
Did you disable Asys Sync on your tablet? I noticed once I disabled that, transfer speeds were a lot faster.
Ok finally worked. I reformatted the micro sdcard in FAT32 and ran read/write test on it to make sure it is not bad. Tried it again twice and it worked both times. Thanks guys. Really weird problem, something must have gotten corrupted. I have also tried wireless transfer and it work flawlessly. I think that will be my preferred method of transfer now.
Thank you everyone.
When you download a google play movie. What directory are they downloaded in. I want to try to put it on sd card after that point for more space when offline. Although I know its probably not possible. That is fine. But does anyone know where its downloaded and what format ? Oh yah I know internal phone memory but where.
THanks,
Ok does anyone at least know the file extension will be ? If you could tell me that I could find the directory . I know it will be at root level
Ok I finally figured out where it is stored. So I temp unrooted my phone made purchase and then selected download for offline viewing. So in the directory there is a file
application_4jSa8szMNjs.wvm
so i brought my root back to get into that directory then where i was stumped i figured it would be wmv mp4 3gp or whatever with drm protection but no its wvm I have never heard of wvm. so anyways I moved the wvm file to a different directly. Temporarily unrooted my phone . Then went into the google play movie app and it said that the download was missing. so i know I have the proper file. Now my question is does anyone here know anything about a .wvm file ?
Wvm is a file format used by a program called wave to store engine data. Shouldn't be possible to have it as a video file but you can open the file on a pc using vlc media player and use its view codec menu option to see what codecs are used.
It could be just named .wvm so people can't guess its codec by the file extension but vlc would tell you.

Where is the file stored?
thanks
wvm
okay, so from what I can tell the file is stored in:
/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies/****.wvm
I downloaded the file, and opened it in VLC Media Player and it shows:
- Stream 0
---Type Audio
---Codec: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mpga)
---Sample rate: 22050 Hz
---Bitrate 80kb/s
I can only think that this is either the audio file and the video file is sitting somewhere else, or that this is the video and audio file and it is encrypted in such a way that it is only recognized as audio.

You should be able to tell if it is really just audio by the files size in megabytes.
If it is small it is likely just audio.

i was wondering the same thing. Found the movie in the place mentioned, it's called framwork_345345_blahblah.wvm
I can play the opening "20 the century fox" part in any media player then it hangs. However, Gallery can play it fine. I am going to try and move it out and put it in my movies dir and see if gallery sees it .. nope, it will play from that directory if I use Gallery as the player, but the Gallery up doesn't show it as a movie in my movies list. Wonder if I play with the extension...
Edi: nope, even changing the extension to mp4 didn't work. Unless gallery didn't refresh or something.

Yes, the movies are removed.
I have a similar issue....but I'm going to add a little twist here.
So I purchased the Wolverine DVD from Walmart, it came with a digital copy and a code to be able to download a copy from the Google Play Store. I did this, and then decided to move the movie to my external SD card. When I try to play the movie, it hangs during the "Universal Studios" opening at about 12 seconds in and then displays "Video cannot be played". I've downloaded countless different video players, but all have the same result.
Now here's the twist.... I used a file explorer app to locate the video folder and selected the movie file, it gave me the options to select which of the many video players installed I wanted to use to play the movie, I selected the stock player, and played the video through there instead of opening it from a video app directly, this time it worked! The movie opened, and played fine, but when I stoped the movie and tried to use the same procedure again, it failed and now displays "Video cannot be played" yet again.
Now no matter what I try, I can't get the video to play. This is very confusing, how can it work once, and then not work again, almost as if it got corrupted? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I can confirm that you can't. I purchased the HD version of Elf for $5 and moved a copy of the file to my computer. When I try to open the file with HandBrake, it states: Scan failed: Unrecognized file type.
Would be nice to figure out how to remove the DRM on the google play movies so I can play them on the TV without having to purchase a chromecast. I wouldn't mind one, but it sucks being forced into it. Only other option is to download the BD copy online.
Hello,
I m a new user to this group. Would like to post my views since I was searching for the same thing as you guys are.
I downloaded couple of movies from playstore. Reading the previous comments, I went to the directory - Andorid/data/com.google.android.videos/files/Movies/*. there I found 3 directories - knowledge, subtitles and some blasdfjsd. I checked all 3 and came to know the last directory fjsdnfdjnd, contains my movies since the file size was huge.
I have Astro File Manager, using it, I copied one video file from that dfdsjnfdsjf folder, pasted it in Downloads folder. Then I selected that file -> Open As. It gave me some options. One of them is Video. Selected it. A list of video players came up.
Selected MX Player since its very renowned n can play any format. Ta Da. It starts working fine. I can play, pause, stop.
Only thing needs to be remembered is, for playing this file, you have to go in file explorer and then play as MX player.
If I open MX player to search for the file, I cannot see it in the directory.
I hope, i answered correctly.
Thanks.

You're right, it worked for me many times until I moved the file and renamed it. This thread has been very helpful. Thanks OP and all!
Will someone please post instructions on how to download a movie you purchased on google play, and then move that movie to a laptop to watch on the laptop? Perhaps also give instructions on how to convert it to an mp4? perhaps also give instructions on how to remove DRM?
is this impossible?
Ok, so I'm able to download wvm file, and transfer to the PC. but how can you convert OR watch that movie file on a laptop without an internet connection?
