CWM installed but not booting - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey everybody! Got a little problem. I am trying to i stall CWM via ROM Manager premium on my rooted Galaxy S4 so I can make a nandroid backup.
It downloads fine from RM fine and says it's installed, but when I boot into recovery, I get the "no command" message for like a second then the android stock recovery takes over. Any idea as to what I'm doing wrong? This is really aggravating. I also tried uninstall and reinstall RM but CWM is still there but not booting. I followed all the installation instructions to the letter and it's not working.

Did you read this thread that's stickied to the top of the general section? You can easily soft brick this device doing what you tried to do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501

I didn't read that. Thanks for the heads up! Soft bricking is exactly what I am trying to prevent. I just want to make a nandroid backup.

Scroll down in the OP of that thread and you'll see a link to another thread by k1mu called something like "Customizing your Galaxy S4- what's possible and what's not", that will give you info more specific to what you're looking for. Tapatalk won't let me link it for some reason. Good luck

I'll give it a look see. Thanks!

How to restore from a Nandroid backup on Mac?

HELP!!! Ok well it's not that bad. I applied the white bar hack and don't like it. I didn't know if I would like it so I did a Nandroid. I neglected however, to find out how to restore it, I just thought it would be like pushing the restore button in recovery. It gets an error saying run nandroid-mobile.sh restore from adb. I have a Mac and no fastboot. Can someone provide me and the rest of the forum with instructions?
I found this great site that may be able to point you in the right direction.

Sigh... Reflashing time. A quick search on google told me how to do it, and the system.img md5 doesn't match.
OFF TOPIC: CPCookieMan update your signature lol
Lets get this Eris ROOTED!
It looks like 2.1 is just around the corner!
Root is too! I'm so torn over updating or rooting...
Will we be the first Android not to get root? NO!
Nice to see that CP finally rooted his phone.

Yep! I will try Nandroid again after reflashing. In the mean time, I will update my sig.
i had the issue with the mobile.sh error flash via adb. From what I read it had to do with battery life. Try plugging in and running again it worked for me.
It was a problem with my backup. I didn't backup correctly so it didn't restore right. Works fine now.

Stock Nandroid Image

If anyone needs a stock nandroid image (with root),
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YWQJRO90
There is no need to flash this unless you messed up or just want to go back to stock (with root).
instructions:
DO NOT install it as update.zip . you are supposed to unzip the file after you download it and place the folder called 2010-09-21.18.31.12 in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup then you boot into cwm and goto backup and restore -> restore -> 2010-09-21.18.31.12
what is this nandroid ? stock image ? i mean im new to android and i keep seeing nandroid but im not sure what it does

Nandroid makes a complete backup of your phone, all your data, apps, everything. It's like it takes a snapshot of your phone, and when you restore it your phone will be back to the exact state of when you made the backup.
The image i posted will take your phone back to what it was like when you pulled it out of the package, except with root. In order to use nandroid, you have to flash the cwm kernel and install the recovery for your phone through rom manager.

Ok, so I am getting my Fascinate tomorrow (can't wait by the way). I have been cruising the forums doing my research before I attempt to root, flash CWM recovery, etc. I am completely unfamiliar with with using Odin, but have used nandroid via Amon's recovery on my Droid Eris (which is running Froyo by the way).
Here's my question: how do I apply this image? Do I have to be rooted first, or can I go ahead and apply this zip and never have to fool with Oden? I just want to be sure I don't make a mistake. Eris development was firmly established by the time I arrived on the scene, so I have not had to worry about these kinds of things. Sorry if this seems like a noob question?

nope, the update is not compatible with root right now. Wait for a dev to release the root friendly vzw update.

I really appreciate the prompt response. I think I am going to wait until a dev develops a root friendly vzw update. Or I may go ahead and root and wait till then ..... decisions, decisions
I saw where you posted that some Sticky topics need to be compiled, wasupwithuman. I could not agree more. A couple more questions for you (maybe these will help someone else too) .... (1) How stable is CWM on the Fascinate? I read somewhere that it is a duct-taped together recovery that will do for now. Is this true??? (2) Should I just wait for a dev to develop a custom recovery (like Amon's on the Eris), or is CWM stable enough as it currently is? There seems to be some confusion about this from topic to topic. (3) This is unrelated, but has anyone confirmed Wireless Tether working on their Fascinate. I believe I read that it was somewhere else, but would like to know for sure. Thanks again!!!
P.S. - First link is down, but I found another guide on XDA and will probably just follow it (considering it uses adb which I am familiar with from my Eris).

Also she is coming from froyo..
You can root it in froyo but the question is what do you want to do. If you are going to flash a custom ROM then you need to go back to stock (eclair). Either way, short fuse super one click is best way to get root. Google how to root vibrant with super one click, you should find files and directions. The update zip you referred to is directions to get CWM recovery.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
You can download the Superuser.zip and/or the CWR zip from my signature.
If you are just going to root it and leave Eclair on there, then pull the Superuser zip from my signature.
If you are going to flash a custom ROM on there, then pull the CWR zip from my signature (but make sure you have already downloaded a ROM.zip to flash with this).
For Root. Put Supersuser.zip in your Internal_SD card and make sure it is named Update.zip and the only thing on there named that. Boot into recovery using the key combo (Volume +/- and Power, when you see Vibrant come up, release the Power button but keep ahold of the Vol+/-) It will boot into "stock" recovery. Scroll down to Reinstall Packages and hit it. Might have to hit it twice, then reboot. You should have Root.
For CWR/Custom ROM. Same as above only no need for the Root.zip. Find a ROM that you want to flash (make sure to read OPs) and download it and put it on a folder where you know it will be in the phone. Just put the CWR on your Internal_SD and again make sure it is named Update.zip. Boot into recovery, scroll down to Reinstall Packages, hit it. It will cycle through and the stock (blue) recovery will turn to CWR (green) and you can then scroll down to Install From SD card and find the ROM that you downloaded beforehand.
Some things. Booting into recovery isn't easy and can take you a few times to get it. Also you can root using Z4 app, but you'll have to find that on your own.

[Solved] Yay another soft brick/bootloop!

Yes I have searched, yes I have tried google and yes I am still stuck...
I *think* I have tried just about everything and I have read through about 10 "soft brick" or "stuck on samsung screen after rooting on stock ICS" (and most combinations of) but nothing is working. I'm sure it's probably an easy fix but I just can't seem to get anywhere. Here's what happened.....
I googled rooting galaxy not after ICS update and found this http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-no...y-note-sgh-i717-icsgingerbreadeasiest-method/
It was all I could find about rooting after the ICS OTA update, so I did it. Everything seemed fine. I had CW but no superuser so I DL it from the market as well as my old Titanium pro from back when I rooted my HTC. I rebooted my phone to get it all settled in and decided to run Titanium and get this party started. I got an error message that busybox was not installed so.... I installed it but when I clicked the app on my phone it said it would not install because I didn't have root access.... This is where the confusion starts to set in.
So I restarted to see if I could get into CW but when I rebooted the soft brick started.... I was stuck at the "samsung" screen.
I IMMEDIATELY ran to XDA and began my search. I can still get to DL mode, Odin and CW so I know there is hope. I tried the files listed in the "All in one guide for noobs" and the "Galaxy Note Super Everything Thread (I717)".
There was a suggestion to use Kies but when I put in my serial # and model name i get the "galaxy note does not support initializing" message.
I'm not new to flashing/rooting, although things are a bit different, I have a basic understanding of the process but I ain't no Einstein either...
I also tried to flash the stock Telus ICS rom but I got an error message and my lil droid guy went belly up....
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I love my note and this is killing me...
I have to go to work so if I don't reply immediately its because I have no email access at work.... Especially without my Note....
The steps are correct in the link you gave.
Did Odin3 say success?
Did you get CWM installed?
Did you flash superuser?
Is there a superuser icon in your apps?
Ranger is on it....
I'm thinking we dont have CWM on the device....????
And no SU flash, from within the recovery that doesnt exist....g
He has cwm, he did not flash superuser, Looks like he assumed flashing cwm would automatically root him.
Since you can get into recovery... i would just go ahead and download a Rom zip, transfer to phone by mounting in cwm (mounts and storage if you didn't know) and flash that sumbitch
Oh yep...found that.......Thanks brother....g
That means do or redo steps 13 to 16 in the guide you posted.
agreed....g
im back...
Just got in, thanks for the replies.
Yes I have CWM and can access it. I have tried to flash the CM roms as well as the stock telus ICS rom but was denied at install. I got a "assert failed getprop (ro.build.device)" message and 2 other "ro." error messages when I install the cm nightly quincyatt rom.

I appreciate the help by the way, I know how frustrating it can be to try and help with tech situations from emails and messages (Hi Mom ).
Thanks has been pushed....
That assert error is in the script used by CWM to flash and it is saying 'wrong rom for your device'. So for sure you have the correct CWM and rom for your phone? Just checking because errors at this point make your phone useless.

[Q] Problem loading Safestrap

Hello,
I followed the below instructions from the attached link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441
The problem I am having is after I use the “Install Recovery" button my phone goes through the install process and prompts me that I have installed Safestrap however the State of my phone says not installed. I assume that Safestrap is not installed did I do something wrong? Thanks
I also attached some screen shots as well. Phone specs: Verizon S4 Saferooted on Build VRUEMK2, Android 4.3
HOW DO I INSTALL SAFESTRAP?
1.Requirement: Root
2.Requirement: Allow APK install from Unknown Sources
3.Download the Safestrap APK
4.Find the APK using a Filemanager tool and open it on your device, then click "Install".
5.(If updating from an existing Safestrap you might be warned that this will over-write the existing installation. Click the "Yes" equivalent to this message.)
6.Once installed, open up the Safestrap application as you would any other app.
7.Agree to the disclaimer that you won't try to sue me and hunt me down with a rifle if you manage to break your phone..
8.Then use the "Install Recovery" button. You should see the current version down in the lower left corner of the window. And the "Status:" should say "Installed" when you're done.
9.From there you can reboot and you *should* see a new splash screen during the boot up. While this is showing you can enter Safestrap Recovery using the [ menu ] button.
10.That's it for the installation! Read below for a brief overview of Safestrap Recovery v3.x

Im gonna give ya the best info i can. Im new to the safestrap stuff so bare with me hopefully someone can tell me if i am wrong.
1st:
On the stafestrap page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45517751 make sure you are using the correct SS for your version. There is a MJ7/MK2 version and a ME7/MI1 build.
2nd
If you have ran and installed SS before you may need to uninstall it before you install the newer version. There is instructions on that in the link i provided also.
PS
Make sure if you get it working that you download the correct Kernel Modules for the baseband you are running. Very important.
Hope this helps, but like i said... I hope i can be backed up on this and if i am wrong that someone can tell me that lol

Im running out of ideas but Im gonna do whatever I can to help you get this going. I may be doing this tonight to my girlfriends phone and I want all to go smoothly .
This may be stuff you have tried so just ignore if you have already. Just gonna make a list.
1. Redownload the APK. Maybe its a bad download and reinstall it in your phone. Uninstall your current version and then reboot phone. Then install the newly downloaded one.
2. If you can, maybe find a little older version of SS and try it.
3. Do a complete wipe of everything on the phone and start clean after the factory reset (as long as you dont mind factory resetting your phone) and then try the SS install. (make sure you can install from unknown sources again)
4.Make sure you didnt deny the SS app superuser permissions by accident
5.Buy me a beer and maybe i can come up with something else?. Just kidding ofcourse :silly:
Ill do what i can to find a solution for ya

I tried again with no luck I also tried the 3.70 version and that did not work. If I do a system wipe do I lose my root? And I assume I lose apps contacts as well?

Root should not be lost. If it does then you can reroot. Yeah all your app / contacts / settings will be deleted. You can using Titanium Backup to back up all your apps. Gmail can back up all your contacts. Settings, unfortunately you will have to redo all these. Also, what are you using to download the SS APK?

Maybe download on the PC then send to the phone. I very short on ideas. There has to be something we are overlooking.. small and simple...
Anyone else viewing this thread have any ideas?
Well this process shouldn't be this hard. What I would do at this point is Odin the MK2 no wipe.. so you keep all your data then use Saferoot again to root the phone. Then re download SafeStrap and try again.
Another thing are you opening up SuperSu so it can update your binary after rooting and before installing SafeStrap?

Never thought of that.
Never really figured basically unrooting and rerooting the phone would help, but hey, anything that will work.
Thanks for the feedback!

I mean I actually don't think you'd even have to Odin back either but at this point might as well just start over fresh.
Then root the phone again and make sure to update the SuperSu binary then reboot and try installing SafeStrap again. Seems like a superuser deal to me. I could be wrong... Just something I'd do to troubleshoot something like this

I am a little hesitant to re-root as I had a problem rooting the first time but I got through it. And I am not familiar with the Odin process but I see it all over the forum. Eventually I know that I need to venture out and learn this if I am going to experiment with the S4 and other roms. At this point in time I don’t plan on changing ROMs do I really need Safestrap? All I am trying to do is this 4.3 Tether Unlock MOD? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512981
As for the SuperSu updating the binary it did prompt me and I allowed it and I am pretty sure it was before trying to install SafeStrap. Thanks
