[Q] Bricked Z Ultra - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hello,
I just got my Z ultra yesterday. Set up everything, installed dual recovery and rooted, backed up TA partition, backed up via Titanium and Helium, and then through recovery, and then attempted to flash PA 4+. Now my phone will not turn on. When I press the power button it vibrates once but nothing happens. I can get the blue led to turn on for flash mode but screen is still off. I read through the PA 4+ and did not find anything, how can I fix it, will it be done with Flashtool? This is the first time I have had problems as I could usually always find a fix on the forum for my note 2.
Edit: Sony C6833 running kitkat .108 with a locked bootloader. Backups are all on the EXT SD Card.

Thank you, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who made this mistake. I will post as soon as I get home and am able to flash. Right now I have been thumbing through all the threads and had just come across using Flashtool and the stock FTF to get it bootable again. Thank you for the quick response.

Posting update, was able to flash and boot. Phone is back up and running.:victory:

You didn't research before trying to flash a custom ROM did you?
I did the same damn thing day one but I got lucky. Hopefully this will show as a lesson to others that just jump in. But then again I guess that's how all learn.

Well I read one post that stated that as long as you kept the stock kernel you could flash. Just didn't realize only some roms worked. Also everything I'd different from my old Verizon note 2.

[Q] MIUI installation and user data question

Hello,
I am unable to post in the Developement threads at the moment due to the post limit but thought I would ask here and hopefully someone can help me.
Firstly, I have a Locked BootLoader that cannot be unlocked, I have rooted my XS and it is running ICS, I pretty much have it the way I want it but would like to try the MIUI ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768057 which works for all BootLoaders.
Secondly, I need to know if I will lose Root access by flashing the above ROM and also if I will lose all my personal Data. I have CWM installed and have backed up everything it will alow me to back up. But I am just concerned about losing root access and personal data.
For those of you who have flashed the ROM, can you tell me if root access is removed and if personal data is also wiped?
Thank you in advance and I appreciate all answers.
Personal data like pics, music and movie will not be lost if they are on the ext sd card.
Root should stay, but all apps that you install will be wiped so you need to download again from play store and make a backup for contacts and sms.

Would backing up via CWM not be advisable, just backup using the Sony PC Companion or the Backup and Restore utility on the phone itself, should I just use them all to be sure?
Thank you for the reply, much appreciated.
Allow me to add, all Media files are on the additional storage of the phone, the 32gb, I am just worried about SMS, Contacts and so on.
Also, with the above mentioned ROM, are there any limitations as to what apps would run, for instance, ICS compatible apps I previously purchased should have no issue?
Forgive my ignorance, I am not so familiar with Android.

He will lose root, as he have locked bootloader. But there is a link somewhere that is a workaround for it.

Any chance you could point me in the right direction?
I originally used the method outlined by Sharaz22 to root my XS, downgrading to GB and flashing several things, but that is the only thing I have read on the subject of rooting a locked bootloader and to get it up to ICS rooted, I have not read about any special method for MIUI to maintain root access, even in the thread I linked above I could not see a work around, unless I am going blind.
Again, thank you and your help is appreciated.

If you have CWM, when you flash MIUI you'll still have it.

You will never lose root if you install roms with cwm,you will lose it only if the rom are buggy but not in case of miui.

Okay, this is making sense to me now, so I just need to place the files into the suggested directory and reboot into CWM and flash MIUI throught there. Obviously following the instructions in the original thread and all should be fine, root access will not be lost and I can restore backed up content such as SMS and contacts without any fuss?
Thanks guys, that is great. :good:

I lost both when I flashed MIUI. I still had root, but not CWM. For locked bootloaders, the CWM is installed in the /system partition. When you flash MIUI, all of the files in that partition are changed, so you lose it. You can either reflash CWM like you did the first time or you can use this method (I forgot I had the link): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787532

Sorry GM, one final question.
What is the difference between the one you linked and the one in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1793432
I notice Sharaz22 states he removed the Kernel so it would work with the stock Kernel, now I have the stock Kernel since I installed a stock ICS so what problems would I face if I went with the official one and not the one Sharaz22 "edited"?

Nope. Flash ROM with CWM, wipe what you have to wipe, and before rebooting, flash the CWM package (no need for the Superuser one)
Guys, I suffered some mishap yesterday trying to flash MIUI on my phone.
After the flashing process with CWM, the phone would not boot, no response other than a single flash of the green LED and a vibration, it would not boot and i tried for over an hour. In the end I had to use Flashtools and get ICS back on the phone.
Since that, I cannot root my phone again, I have tried and tried, the first time I did it, it was easy and straight forward, downgrading to GB and using the batch files and so on, but now, each and every time I try to do it and follow the guides, of which I have found two, it does not work. That is because the process states that the "Device is not detected" and it cannot locate anything related to ADB. I have checked the drivers, installed several, reinstalled flashtools and each time I go through the guide I am left with an unrooted phone and nothing seems to work. Even in flashtools it struggles to flash the ROM every now and then and the phone just seems to randomly disconnect even though it remains plugged in.
Any help, I am struggling to get anything done on this phone and I would rather just have Root and CWM than MIUI.

To all of you, thank you, I f***ing love you guys!
I managed to get Root and CWM back on with ICS and Flashed MIUI, I was disappointed by MIUI and thankfully I had created a CWM backup a day earlier of my phone the way I wanted it, so I restored that and have everything I was missing and back how the phone was before I started messing around with MIUI.
Thank you all so much for your help, you guys are a great benefit to this community, thanks!

What kernel and what firmware/ROM are you on and do you have a unlocked bootlooder?
Turn off with volume up +power button try stock kernel if you are on stock firmware also did you wipe cache and dalvik

stay calm its not that easy to completly brick your z ultra
search for fastboot and a guide for flashing kernel.
use e.g. the boot.img from your current rom.
enter recovery and flash a rom again!
there are a lot of good step by step guides so its easy.
more infoand another question.
The power button plus volume up trick didnt work, had to let the battery drain out. and i am currently running running pacman 4.4.2. rom and the kernel i flashed was revolutionkernel. after some more reading which i should have done earlier im pretty sure that that kernel was meant for aosp and c11 based roms. i have a different kernel, slimkat this time, i want to flash it and give it a shot but this downloaded as a .zip. how do i do this? the other one was just a .img and that was it. im sorry if these are dumb questions. ive been rooting and putting custom roms on phones for a while but im new to kernels.
red button to power off
you also have a tiny red button to power off the device if you open the lash for the sd card.
flash the same way as you flash a rom.
edit:
i dont think slimkat kernel will work but you never try you never know

where do i find the boot.img of the current rom. ?
so far ive tried two other roms, slimkat, and codename lungo. with three different kernels, revolution, pimped kernel, and slimkat kernel. the farthest i got was to get my phone to boot up but it keeps showing an error msg saying android system has stopped, and i cant get past that. I want the codename lungo rom to work so what kernel do i need to run with that? or is there a way to find the boot.img of that rom?

You need to extract the boot.img that's in the Lungo Rom zip file. Fastboot it using Flashtool or adb push it. Flashtool will be the easiest way. Once you get that on there try to enter recovery BEFORE the Rom boots from power on. If you can't enter recovery then that Rom doesn't have recovery built in. In that case you'll need to get it from somewhere. The Carbon Rom has a boot.img with working dual recovery and you should be able to use that one to boot Lungo as they are all CM based Roms.
Also when stuck with the PHONE ON and need it turned OFF. Press and Hold Volume Up + Power Button until the phone vibrates 3 times. Make sure it's not plugged in or it'll boot again. If holding those buttons doesn't turn it off, you're doing it wrong because it works without fail. Little something Sony put in there. If all else fails, open the cover of the SDCARD/SIMCARD sport and there should be a small Red Button.
Good luck.
Also note that all the roms flash their own kernel when you 9nstall them, use that first, then play when you knpw that thingsmwork. It sounds like you are trying to do too much for your current understanding.

Thanks for the help.
I managed to get it working again. albeit on the original pacman rom and kernel. I tried to do a restore back to stock and it cant restore data it says, i also cant do a backup it says the same thing. no matter. its working again and thats all i needed. thank you guys for the help.
I just had a similar problem,,,I tried to restore to the first nandroid (after rooting 757) but it stops at the Sony logo. If I do 2 restores in a row it than works....weird?

[Q] I think I bricked my C6806 GPE

Ok, I bought an Experia Z Ultra C6806 GPE. In stupidly trying to install a recovery that worked I flashed a kernel that wouldn't boot, after having unlocked the bootloader (at Sony). Then I tried to go back to stock and forgot that I'd left the bootloader unlocked. It seemed to flash successfully (FlashTool said it succeeded) but won't boot now, no lights come on and I can't get into Flashmode or anything else. It seems to be well and truly bricked. Is there anything I could do with a jtag or a hard reset or SOMETHING to bring it back to life? I'm willing to open it up if someone can hand hold me a bit in the process-I really like this phone. Any help at all would be much appreciated!

The partitions are different which for sure will cause hard brick, not sure if the boot loader would have mattered.

You're scaring me. You're like a madman (madgirl?) on a bike, heading for a cliff and tells you "meh" Just keep in mind that Xperia and GPe ROMs, kernels and recoveries are not compatible with each other, so don't flash stuff unless it specifically says "GPe" in the title.

Thanks for the help-I know that now. Wish I'd done a bit more reading then so I wouldn't have to know it so much I suspect that, when I get it back all I want to do is root, get a recovery working, do a backup and then let it be. Unless there's some compelling reason to change it, the GPe stock rooted will suit me fine. Waiting a while for the info on what can and can't be done to firm up won't bother me a bit. This is my very first Sony phone, the first 5 or 6 were all HTC or Samsung starting with the original G1.
Oh, and I really am a madwoman on a bike-I have a homebuilt Yuba Mundo with a 52 volt/40 amp battery pack

What I ended up doing that bricked the phone was flashed a sony stock FTF on a GPe phone (C6806) not knowing at the time that the partition sizes were different. It is indeed hard bricked and will be going back for (hopefully) warranty replacement. What I was having trouble with before that was flashing a recovery..which seemed to work, except that I didn't know about the up/down button to choose a recovery when the led flashes. I thought it hadn't installed correctly and wasn't able to get into recovery to do a backup....which led to me flashing an (Ultra) kernel that wouldn't boot the rom, which led to me flashing a stock sony rom....I was far too eager and thought I knew what I was doing. I can only plead stupid and stand mute to the court
It might be helpful if someone could start a GPe only section, as I didn't find that (at first, I have now) and ended up in the regular Ultra section...evidently some of the things that can be done on those don't apply to the GPe.
This is actually my very first brick-I've passed a milestone...probably not one I want to see again, either.

Hello XDA! this is my first post here. Though i have been reading it for a long time and and i am very helpful to this site for all help it provides.
this is first time i have to post because i couldn't find any solution after two days of searching around.
I have a sony xperia Z2 (D6502) and i was trying to root that thing. i unlocked the bootloader using Sony's official guide. But i can't root it. i consulted a guide at android.gs which told me to just download superSU.zip and boot into recovery, and install zip from there.however i just can't boot into recovery.
All the guides for booting Z2 into recovery say that -
1) Switch off the phone
2) Switch on, when notification led lights up, press volume up or down a few times.
But -
when switching on, notification lights of my phone never light up.it just shows a Sony logo, followed by a Xperia Logo and boot animation.
even the adb boot recovery method does not work. phone just does a complete restart. thats it.
Do i even have a recovery installed on my phone? i got no idea.
Yeah You have to flash recovery first. Maybe it is better to flash DoomKernel, he is explaining how in his post. So it should not be to difficult

P.S Don't forget to check your build and use right kernel. It won't boot if you flash wrong one.

well, i have certainly tried that.
i downloaded all of files but when i put in first code in command prompt
"fastboot flash boot boot.img"
all it says is <waiting for device>
and the wait never ends,
Follow these steps and try
Flash the custom recovery again using odin and when the reset button appears in odin window at the same time press the volume up and down both and hold till it get to the recovery menue

@dfire86 That's Samsung territory, doesn't work that way with Sony.

Maybe not booting the phone in fastboot mode?
OP, if you haven't already you should install flashtool, link here that I used last night https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByK8JL7P6wDTMXRvcTdjMzVuNFk/edit
You'll need the drivers to go with it, here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2635830
I went through all this last night. Unlocked bootloader fine. Used fastboot to install DooM's adv stock kernel but the rom I was on was stock 255 and kernel was for 402 so I was getting a black screen. I think the easiest thing for me would have been to fastboot on the 255 kernel but I wasn't thinking straight, used flashmode to put on a stock 402 rom and then used fastboot to put on the 402 kernel, finally got into recovery.
Man, this is much more work than doing a Samsung phone!
It might be the point! OP try what he said!

You can't root through flashtool, you only need it to get the kernel w/recovery on it. Then install supersu from recovery.

Are you sure that your bootloader is unlocked successfully ? Some career is not allowing you to unlock the bootloader. Can't think about other reason. Maybe try reinstall driver... Or maybe another method is avaliable for D6502
OFcourse. Nexus is easier... As it is made for development.

well, im in india, and here, thankfully, carriers don't bother with locking bootloader and stuff.
And thanks to fatguy666. booting into fastboot mode was genius.
i booted into it and flashed kernel using flashtool.
and then phone went into recovery using normal given methods.
everything is done and dusted now. my xperia z2 is rooted! yay!
i love XDA. and thanks to fatguy:good::good::good::good::good::good:
Gratz! enjoy!

Same here .. am too facing the same situation in India. It is not possible to go into Recovery Mode with any procedure i.e. tried Keys Combination and also through ADB method but didn't succeeded.
Is it mandatory to unlock the Bootloader before entering Recovery Mode? Please help.
Regards!

my bl is locked and my recovery worked fine until after x amount of restarts and now it will not let me back in.
Hi all, there are a few poeple on here with the same problem. The link is for the dual recovery thread. I assume everybody is on .314 and that is what everybody has? The problem is being looked into. I'm also looking for a solution. I did have it installed before updating to .314 so I'm gonna wait till a solution is found before re-installing. Apart from clean installing .314 and re-installing dual recovery I can't think of a solution off the top of my head. I was posting back and forward with someone last night who had tried re-installing dual recovery, but to no avail. Hence the reason I'm gonna wait. Hope this helps a bit peeps:fingers-crossed:
Yes on 314. I was thinking of.flashing a old fw onto phone before.dual recovery again but this issue has been around for months and I really need to update my rom
All I want is to be in recovery mode on stock fw 314.
When I turn my phone off and start it and waiting for the lightbar to show up for me to press either volume up or volume down several times to get into recovery mode, but my lightbar never light up and the sony loggo comes up and the phone starts normal.
I have also tried to go into recovery mode through my PC with USB debugging and ADB on on my phone and using an script and the phone just starts normal.
I have also tried an app called Quick Boot from Google Play but the phone starts normal.
My Phone:
Bootloader unlocked.
Rooted: Yes
FW: Stock 314. (I dont want any other than stock FW)
ok I fixed mine, recovery did not support partition upon boot hence why it did not load
I'm facing the same problems on .438 with an unlocked BL. Button presses doesn't work and the LED doesn't glow during boot anyway.
EDIT: Stupid question but is recovery lost after a FTF flash? Anyway, I solved my problem by running the XZDualRecovery installer.

Unbrick Xperia Z2

OK, I decided to put a custom ROM on my Z2 today. I did not unlock bootloader, but installed NUT's Dual Recovery. It booted, installed ROM fine. I decided I wanted to reinstall to change some settings, wiped data and davlik, rebooted (by accident), and now I'm just suck at SONY logo on boot. Please help, not sure how to fix this. I can power off by Power Button + Volume Up, or the red button on left side. I just want to get it back into recovery so I can reflash, or whatever I need to do to revive it. Searched around, not finding much to fix it. Please help!

OK, I at least got that far using proper instructions, still doesn't boot though, stuck at SONY logo.
Nevermind, it worked now. It was telling me some weird instructions, had to have it in fastboot, unplug and plug back in again without doing anything. It's booting now. Why would this happen? Maybe I just need to unlock my bootloader?

No, it has nothing to do with unlocking your bootloader. If you were using flashtool you probably didn't plug it in in the correct mode.
As for unlocking your bootloader, read the instructions on any ROM's OP. It will tell you whether it needs an unlocked bootloader or not. Sony stock based ROMs sometimes do and sometimes don't. AOSP based ROMs do need an unlocked bootloader as that is needed to flash a custom kernel. If you do want to unlock your bootloader, read up on how to root your device first without unlocking and then read up on how to back up the TA partition of your device. This partition is effectively your warranty and contains the DRM keys to all of Sony's proprietary software. If you unlock your bootloader without a backup, you lose your DRM keys and they are non retrievable. Thus, if you want to send the device off for a repair, without restoring the TA partition you cannot restore your warranty and it will be declined. Having your TA partition backed up means that if you ever need to send it off, you can restore it and this locks your bootloader and reverses any DRM key loss.
