[Q] I think I bricked my C6806 GPE - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Ok, I bought an Experia Z Ultra C6806 GPE. In stupidly trying to install a recovery that worked I flashed a kernel that wouldn't boot, after having unlocked the bootloader (at Sony). Then I tried to go back to stock and forgot that I'd left the bootloader unlocked. It seemed to flash successfully (FlashTool said it succeeded) but won't boot now, no lights come on and I can't get into Flashmode or anything else. It seems to be well and truly bricked. Is there anything I could do with a jtag or a hard reset or SOMETHING to bring it back to life? I'm willing to open it up if someone can hand hold me a bit in the process-I really like this phone. Any help at all would be much appreciated!

It WAS a sony FTF...but I think flashing it ontop of the unlocked bootloader was a BAD THING....
It won't fastboot or ANYTHING.

The partitions are different which for sure will cause hard brick, not sure if the boot loader would have mattered.

Ouchy... We should summon @DooMLoRD and see if he knows what's up.

Never flash a [full] FTF to a GPe ZU, locked or unlocked. I think we have seen this 4 or 5 times now, none of them have recovered them that I know of.
@DooMLoRD may be able to help now that he has one or the other way is to read the hardbricked Z1/ZU thread and see if the_laser could help

Well, ya wins some and ya loses some...this is my first real actual brick. Guess I should have done more reading....think I'll see if the warranty is good or not. Thanks for the help guys.

Next question..assuming I get the phone back in stock condition...how do I do a backup? I couldn't get CWM or TWRP to install on this phone, which is what led to my dilemma originally. Unlock bootloader, yes, root it, yes..backup TA or backup ROM, no.
Is the GPe not back up-able?

You're scaring me. You're like a madman (madgirl?) on a bike, heading for a cliff and tells you "meh" Just keep in mind that Xperia and GPe ROMs, kernels and recoveries are not compatible with each other, so don't flash stuff unless it specifically says "GPe" in the title.

Thanks for the help-I know that now. Wish I'd done a bit more reading then so I wouldn't have to know it so much I suspect that, when I get it back all I want to do is root, get a recovery working, do a backup and then let it be. Unless there's some compelling reason to change it, the GPe stock rooted will suit me fine. Waiting a while for the info on what can and can't be done to firm up won't bother me a bit. This is my very first Sony phone, the first 5 or 6 were all HTC or Samsung starting with the original G1.
Oh, and I really am a madwoman on a bike-I have a homebuilt Yuba Mundo with a 52 volt/40 amp battery pack
Off to do copious reading of threads so as to not make anymore noob mistakes.....

What I ended up doing that bricked the phone was flashed a sony stock FTF on a GPe phone (C6806) not knowing at the time that the partition sizes were different. It is indeed hard bricked and will be going back for (hopefully) warranty replacement. What I was having trouble with before that was flashing a recovery..which seemed to work, except that I didn't know about the up/down button to choose a recovery when the led flashes. I thought it hadn't installed correctly and wasn't able to get into recovery to do a backup....which led to me flashing an (Ultra) kernel that wouldn't boot the rom, which led to me flashing a stock sony rom....I was far too eager and thought I knew what I was doing. I can only plead stupid and stand mute to the court
It might be helpful if someone could start a GPe only section, as I didn't find that (at first, I have now) and ended up in the regular Ultra section...evidently some of the things that can be done on those don't apply to the GPe.
This is actually my very first brick-I've passed a milestone...probably not one I want to see again, either.

[Q] Tried going back to OTA 4.5.91 via RSDLite, stuck in boot-loop, can't get out.

OK fellas. Had newest version of CM7 on the phone (phone is unlocked, rooted, etc). Keep getting random shut-offs while in stand-by. Decided to go back to official AT&T ROM.
Started flashing phone via RSD Lite. Got an error, no changes were made. Flashed again, got a different error. Stuck in boot loop. Erased cache and userdata via Fastboot, flashed AGAIN. Stuck in boot loop STILL.
Basically I can't get into the phones stock recovery, I get to the triangle screen and pressing above the search button does nothing. The phone loads up to the AT&T screen, then reboots and keeps looping at the animated "M" logo - not the M Dual Core logo. Any ideas fellas? 'cause I'm out of them. I even tried flashing a different recovery with the Atrix Fastboot Tool I found on here and got an error.

once you unlock your bootloader, it burns a fuse that motorola can check on to see if the device has been tampered with. that's why people say once unlocked, always unlocked.
it's possible to hide the 'unlocked' text at boot, but it's not possible to hide the burned fuse.

I'm sorry to reply so much and take your time, (by the way thanks for the information, really appreciate it)
I've been having (i'm assuming) hardware issues with this phone and I only got it yesterday so I want to swap it at a local ATT store tomorrow. Can I do that without worries in my current state? Will they eventually notice and bill me? Or will I be safe?

pudding has the 'fastboot oem unlock' function built into it, the stock bootloader doesn't. so when you reflashed gingerbread, you replaced the bootloader which caused the phone to believe that it's locked again (even though it isn't)
this causes your phone to have a 'locked' bootloader in every function, except that your fuse is still burned.
after flashing pudding, you should stay away from RSDlite completely and use fruitcakes for all of your stock needs.

i personally hard bricked my first Atrix while attempting to unlock the bootloader, AT&T replaced it without any questions. not to say that they'll do this for anyone, but just my personal experience.
as far as i know, AT&T will replace your phone as long as it's a hardware malfunction, and not anything caused by flashing custom firmware onto your device.

Thanks so much man. I have a replacement phone on the way due to the random shut offs considering people have been reporting it with the stock GB rom too, and it's believed to be a hardware malfunction, I just wanted it to appear more "stock" when they received it to avoid any question asking. Would really suck if I bricked it before hand haha.
I actually like the stock ROM on this phone anyway, probably won't be going back to CM7 once the new one comes in. It's rebooting now with the pudding SBF, we'll see if she still loops or not. If it still loops, I'll flash the modified CWM and the fruitcake ROM and report back. You guys are super helpful, thanks again!
you're welcome, both of you. glad i could help, when i was new i had a lot of help from the community here and i like to give back as much as possible. since i'm no programmer, all i can do is help answer questions for people and make sure they don't screw up their devices.
i hope you get your problems worked out, this is an amazing phone with awesome developers.
also, if you enjoy the stock ROM i would highly suggest for you to check out Aura, it's simply amazing for being a moto-based ROM.

well i'm glad you got your problem sorted out! before you flash any ROMs though, be sure to do a complete backup of your phone as it is right now. it'll help you in case of PDS corruption later on.
What exactly is PDS corruption? And what do you recommend I do a backup with? I've actually never done a backup for any of my many android devices.
EDIT: guessing nandroid, lol google ftw

i'm sure you have CWM installed by now, use Romracer's and do a full backup of your device. just keep it on your phone, with a copy of it backed up on your computer.
the PDS partition is a place on our phone that holds a lot of information about our device, if it gets corrupted you can experience a lot of touchscreen issues. just better to be safe. i flash my phone every 2-3 days and haven't experienced anything, but other people have, so like i already said; better safe than sorry

[Q] Bricked Z Ultra

Hello,
I just got my Z ultra yesterday. Set up everything, installed dual recovery and rooted, backed up TA partition, backed up via Titanium and Helium, and then through recovery, and then attempted to flash PA 4+. Now my phone will not turn on. When I press the power button it vibrates once but nothing happens. I can get the blue led to turn on for flash mode but screen is still off. I read through the PA 4+ and did not find anything, how can I fix it, will it be done with Flashtool? This is the first time I have had problems as I could usually always find a fix on the forum for my note 2.
Edit: Sony C6833 running kitkat .108 with a locked bootloader. Backups are all on the EXT SD Card.

You didn't research before trying to flash a custom ROM did you?
I did the same damn thing day one but I got lucky. Hopefully this will show as a lesson to others that just jump in. But then again I guess that's how all learn.
Well I read one post that stated that as long as you kept the stock kernel you could flash. Just didn't realize only some roms worked. Also everything I'd different from my old Verizon note 2.

OK, I decided to put a custom ROM on my Z2 today. I did not unlock bootloader, but installed NUT's Dual Recovery. It booted, installed ROM fine. I decided I wanted to reinstall to change some settings, wiped data and davlik, rebooted (by accident), and now I'm just suck at SONY logo on boot. Please help, not sure how to fix this. I can power off by Power Button + Volume Up, or the red button on left side. I just want to get it back into recovery so I can reflash, or whatever I need to do to revive it. Searched around, not finding much to fix it. Please help!

OK, I at least got that far using proper instructions, still doesn't boot though, stuck at SONY logo.
Nevermind, it worked now. It was telling me some weird instructions, had to have it in fastboot, unplug and plug back in again without doing anything. It's booting now. Why would this happen? Maybe I just need to unlock my bootloader?

No, it has nothing to do with unlocking your bootloader. If you were using flashtool you probably didn't plug it in in the correct mode.
As for unlocking your bootloader, read the instructions on any ROM's OP. It will tell you whether it needs an unlocked bootloader or not. Sony stock based ROMs sometimes do and sometimes don't. AOSP based ROMs do need an unlocked bootloader as that is needed to flash a custom kernel. If you do want to unlock your bootloader, read up on how to root your device first without unlocking and then read up on how to back up the TA partition of your device. This partition is effectively your warranty and contains the DRM keys to all of Sony's proprietary software. If you unlock your bootloader without a backup, you lose your DRM keys and they are non retrievable. Thus, if you want to send the device off for a repair, without restoring the TA partition you cannot restore your warranty and it will be declined. Having your TA partition backed up means that if you ever need to send it off, you can restore it and this locks your bootloader and reverses any DRM key loss.
If you have any further questions please ask before doing anything. We can only help answer questions if you ask them :highfive:
Please post questions and help in the Q&A/Troubleshooting section. You will receive replies much more quickly if you do so.

[Q] Video Unlimited Broken After Bootloader Unlock....

Hi All,
I've just unlocked my Z2's bootloader and flashed AuRom V4
Since doing so, my Video Unlimited seems to be broken, I keep getting 'Network Unavailable' when trying to sign in...
Does anyone have a definitive solution for this or is this a definite side effect of unlocking the bootloader?
I couldn't seem to find a definitive answer but I would very much like to get it working again as I have lots of content on Video Unlimited I'd like to enjoy on the phone.
I did backup my TA Partition, but the problem remains!
Any help would be appreciated!
Side effect, it relies on the drm keys in the ta partition

Hmm, well I think I've just made my first n00b mistake...
I backed up the TA partition before I left Stock.
Because I wanted to get video unlimited back I figured I may as well restore the partition and the keys, so I plugged in the usb cable and pushed restore TA partition.
The integrity checks said restore success, restart phone? Now the phone won't boot, not even to the xperia logo I just get a vibration and nothing else...
Please don't tell me I've bricked the thing If I have I guess I should have read more carefully :/

The experience of holding a dead Z2 in my hand was not a pleasent one so it has put me off custom romming for a while on this device until I do a bit more reading as coming from a Samsung Note 2 where I never had a bricking episode...
Basically as I had nothing to lose, I downloaded Stock Generic DE firmware .314 and flashed it using flashtool and it has not only revived the phone but my movies unlimited and everything else is working.
I am guessing because I restored the TA partition (bricking my phone) my TA partition was then intact and then upon installing the stock firmware everything is back to normal
Pity really, my battery life was better with the Custom Rom, but it's a tough toss up as I am an avid user of movies unlimited!

Recovering misused Z2

Hello all, I have a rather difficult problem due to lack of knowledge I have on the device.
I have my old Z2 which I have recovered after someone I lent it to (not me, I promise) attempted to 'fix' the root on the device. The last time I saw the device it had PhilZ recovery and a custom ROM on the device.
I got the device back again after about a year apart. First thing is first, I factory reset the device from the bootloader. Oops, now it doesn't boot into rom correctly...
Well time to flash a new rom right? I use recovery to "wipe to prepare for new rom". I attempted to flash 'ressurection remix' rom or something similar for the Z2 via sideload. Only, the bootloader refused to sideload flash because "this zip is for [insert list of z2 devices, one of which I know this phone is], but this device is a leo". Huh? Quick bit of googling and I find a thread where apparently leo means the phone thinks it is a z3? Not great.
Well maybe since we are here I should try to get the device to be running TWRP which I am more familiar with. Now I'm not exactly sure what I did here, but the Z2 really didnt like it. I think I went into fastboot/flashboot (im not sure on the difference, which is probably why it is kill), and attempted to use adb/fastboot to flash a boot.img, as well as a recovery.img, in whatever order. Nothing seemed to happen at all.
TL;DR: So onto the present situation. I am no longer able to boot into recovery. The light will flash green for a tenth of a second and then phone will die. I can however hold volume up+power+USBcablein to make the device go into bootloader?/fastboot?/flashmode? Not sure which, but my computer beeps for a connection and the Z2 has a constant blue light, with no screen. adb does not see the device, nor does fastboot, although I am updating my drivers to see if this helps.
What should I do from here? I'm not sure what flashtool is, but I think this is my next step (although every google result says something different...). I'm not sure where to download this from because all available sites look dodgy.
Device info:
It is a UK device that used the carrier ORANGE in 2015.
It was running PhilZ recovery

The first thing you had to do before you did all that craziness, was to back to stock using flashtool. There are guides here, guides on Google, and guides on YouTube about how to using flashtool. It's very more easy than flashing a custom ROM and all that stuff. Just download the FTF KK firmware, then root, then recovery, and then download FTF of Marshmallow and you will be done.
It's been 3 days ago that you posted this. I hope you solved the problem. This is my little contribution.
Excuse my English, it's not the best.

Hi Snevil,
I havent fixed the issue yet because I really had no idea where to go from where I put myself. Do you know of a good place to download Flashtool, each link I find is either expired or seems really dodgy.?
Thanks for helping out
