Several ROM threads have links to Odin 3.09. You didn't really search much.
Also since you posted a question to the development forum, I've asked a mod to move it to the Q&A section.

Did you check my guide in the general section? There is a link in section 1&5. Versions 1.3, 1.83. Pick one and profit.

I'm at work right now, but I can dropbox it when I get home. I'm not sure what version I have though
Hi,
I'm in China and have a genuine S5830. However, typical of foreign firmware, it's all designed and geared to Chinese.
What I want:
English apps and the phone recognized as English, not Chinese, as the default install language. (I have the English language option, but most apps assume I'm Chinese. Also, there's no Android Market in China.)
I'm guessing that my IP address is sometimes to blame, but I'd like an English firmware to reduce the problem. I'm hoping a full-blown English-market firmware will install more in English.
What I've tried:
Downloaded this file: S5830XWKS3_S5830XWKS2_S5830VIRKP1_HOME.tar.md5
from http://www.samfirmware.com/ as a UK 2.3.5 single-file install
Opened ODIN Odin3 v1.85 and followed the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
But it sticks on 'setupconnection'.
I've searched elsewhere and tried changing USB ports and re-checked the sequence; as well as being quick with the process.
The phone is always on "Downloading" but no progress bar.
Odin reports various COM numbers - highlighted yellow - depending on the USB ports I try.
But nothing happens. I can close ODIN, or just pull the USB and the phone is unharmed - nothing has happened.
Any ideas? Is there a better flash program now?
Will an English firmware solve the all-Chinese apps on the Samsung Apps and Android Market (when I get it)?
I plan to try a windows 7 32-bit machine tomorrow. Currently on Win7 64.
Thanks in advance for any help.
David.
A letter to newbies.
You have a s5830, so please stick to the guides here on XDA specially made for it, than everything should be fine.
=> [TUTORIAL] How to upgrade, root, flash ... by hubix
As you can see: The ODIN version 4.38 is the recommended one to flash Samsung stock roms.
There you can even watch the video how to accomplish the task.
Next you should read and try to understand this:
=> A Newbie Guide for your Galaxy Ace by EmoBoiix3
Those are pinned threads in their subforums. It's always a good starting point to read up this threads first. That's the reason, why they're stickies in the first place.
If you can't understand everything after the first time going through the guides, than things will be clearer on the second or third round. Try to google the informations you need more clarifications on. Maybe you can help other new members and add some missing or more clear instructions.
If you're at the end of your research and can't find any solution on your own, than other XDA members surely will help to solve the problem you've encountered by posting a new relevant thread.

Sorry, I thought development was for developers, as in developing apps etc. for the android. I've flashed various bit of hardware over time (Still not an expert) and usually found the information in a rooting/modding forum.

I had already seen this, but it has massive bold lettering which seemed to suggest it didn't work. I did read through the thread, but found no new information and it was messier than the link in my first post that I had already found by searching this forum.

Yes. I'm fully aware. However, my search didn't find this page, it found the page in my first post. Google searches kept bringing me back to your forum, which is a wonderfully complex treasure trove of information.

Already did. Over 2 hours spent searching and your forum link in the first post was the best I found, and ODIN was mentioned in many forums. A search for ODIN on google gave me a forum that linked to the latest Odin as this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/teamacid/files/fb/flash/Odin3 v1.85.zip/download?use_mirror=tenet and as it was sourceforge, I assumed it was the latest.

I understand you get many new people on here who never search. Your forum is massive. I made the mistake of not looking specifically in "development" as you look like an app developer site. Developers get heavily involved in stuff I know nothing about and, as I said, I usually find firmware updates in a modding/rooting forum.
I'll look at the details here, which seems to have links to files and be exactly what I'm looking for. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034145
However, the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=570045&d=1302939745 to the Odin multidownloader is only 257 bytes and doesn't work.
Please bear in mind I'm in China and although my proxy can get Facebook, Youtube and most other sites to work, we cannot use multiupload/megaupload on any browser with any proxy.
Thank you for your help.
David.
Edit: So far all links searching for Odin 4.38 are on multiupload.com and I cannot access them. Frustrating!
did you get the cooper.ops file?

Thanks SGA. I want to follow the instructions on the link Tossan gave (C. Flashing the newest firmware, but I can't download Odin. For some reason it is <300 bytes in size; although reporting as a .rar file, nothing can open it.
The Odin I downloaded from sourcefourge (v1.85) is 417KB and opens/runs properly.
I have the firmware; checksum verified.
Where can I find the other files, not on mega/multiupload?
David.
The Odin you want is 4.38. Searching "Odin Multi 4.38" on Google you should find it. It's 444kb in size, and often an rar file extension. You'll need cooper_v1.ops too.
I'd post a link but I'm on my phone, sorry...

If you've managed to download the rom from samfirmware.com, than you should also try to download Odin directly from there (-> Flashprograms / Flashguides).
You should report to hubix in his thread about the Odin file attachement problem, to give him a chance to correct it and other users to benefit from your discovery.

Sorry, I couldn't download from there, I looked at the file ID and searched online; finally found it on Hotfile.
I'll let hubix know regards the files. Thanks for the suggestion.
The good news is it worked! My wife is very happy to be able to read English on her phone now.
Regards,
David.
Edit: I learned I needed "Odin Multi Downloader v4.38" for the S5830, and as I had a one package install I had to:
1) On ODIN click the OPS button and load the Cooper_v1.0.ops file on it that I downloaded.
2) Click on the One Package button then select and load the Single S5830XWKS3_S5830XWKS2_S5830VIRKP1_HOME.tar.md5 file.
3) Click start and let it do it's magic.

Hey, everyone needs a good laugh. don't be a sour noob.
First of all do you have Odin? Did you read Intratech's Odin thread? Did you even go to his thread? If not, read up here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278&highlight=stock+firmware
If links don't work for ROMs (I suggest downloading LA4 if you want Gingerbread, best Gingerbread ROM out there) then google the firmware name and look for a mirror. Ever since the whole download site crackdown, it's been hard to keep good mirrors, which is why you have so many dead links.
BATMAN-- OUT!
I have odin and i have looked at Intratech's thread and have read it multiple times trying to figure it out but not helping..the more i read, the more confusing it gets...sorry for being a sour noob...just frustrated
I flashed the phone using odin the gingerbread rom and then when i was following Intratech's guide on rooting the phone, the program he has listed both freeze and stop responding

Hi, I'm sure I'm beeing a n00b but I had my phone rooted and I just updated to the latest firmware via KIES and now I have the Kernal Version XWLPI and I can't find any instructions that I understand on how to get rooted agian. When I had a different kernal version there were heaps of tutorials and now I'm not sure what to do.
Any help would be much appreciated. I have the NZ version of the phone.
Cheers
A Google search for your exact thread title ("How to root XWLPI") would have returned results that would work for you.
But here, I'm feeling generous. Go to the CF-root thread. There is an LPI kernel there, and instructions are in post 1.
If you don't want to replace the kernel, this works as well (and can be reversed quite easily!):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
It is very simple, just involves copying 2 files to the (external!) SD-Card and following the instructions for CWM.

Well firstly, please use common sense and write logical topic titles. "Pls help" and other such silly titles mean absolutely nothing to people who are browsing the forum. Titles are supposed to be descriptive, ie describe the topic briefly.
Secondly you cant have looked very far because there is plenty of ICS based kernels in the Dev area. Just go grab the Siyah kernel and flash via ODIN and your done.
