Change default keyboard in ported rom? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have ported MIUI V5 to my phone but the default keyboard is all in chinese.
I've tried deleting the APK from system/apps and adding another keyboard APK before zipping and flashing but that results in having no keyboard at all.

I am using MUIU too. But the keyboard is English. Were you able to select the right language when you installed your ROM?

You can visit this thread :

Here is solution

First you have to decompile thekeyboard.apk you want to use for rom some contains LIB files you have to copy them into lib folder of rom
then recompile the app , sign and put into system\app

Display Chinese or Asian languages in ICS Slim Rom

I saw a few posts asking about how to view/display Chinese or Asian languages in ICS Slim Rom.
I wanted to post in that thread but I was not allowed to since I am a new member.
Anyway, here is how I solved the issue. Do the following BEFORE you flash the ICS Slim ROM:
1. Find another ROM which can display Chinese or other Asian languages.
2. Unzip that rom file, and extract the file "DroidSansFallback.ttf" in the /systems/fonts directory in that zip file.
3. Replace the original DroidSansFallback.ttf files with this extracted DroidSansFallback.ttf file in the /systems/fonts directory of the zip file of the ICS Slim Rom.
Note: The original DroidSansFallback.ttf in ICS Slim Rom is about 700kB in size, where as the one I found from another custom rom that supports Chinese is about 5.3MB.
4. Flash ICS Slim zip file with the replaced DroidSansFallback.ttf.
With this, i can view Chinese and Japanese in ICS Slim Rom.
To input Chinese, you just need to install chinese ime.
Did the same trick on Samsung Galaxy S II, and it worked .
or you can just install the additional fonts found under add-ons in the pre-installed app "updateme"

Thanks for this thread. I grabbed a 5.05mb DroidSansFallback.ttf I had lying around, used Root Browser Lite to manually delete the 703kb file in system/fonts and replaced it with the 5.05mb file. A reboot and the Asian characters showed up ok.
Good!
Great Job!!! :good::good::good: I just want that rom but there is no support for Chinese.

Remove the default one and add which ever you want to the same folder.
If the current launcher on bootup is z apk delete that apk from system app folder and include the apk of the launcher that you want
Ohh many thanks for gives an idea

I don't warranty this, use at your risk
Best way is to find stock keyboard in forum & install or flash it.
2nd solution :
Grab "Latin ime " from a deodexed rom (root/system /app / Latin ime. Apk )
#if Latin ime.odex exist so rom is odexed, you must deodex it or try another rom
Install extracted .apk like normal app.
->If you wanna make it as a system app so you must clear dalvik cache too.(if any problems pm me, cause there are more important things that u must know)

hello,
can you point me to the right direction?
i extracted latinime.apk and touchpal.apk from a stock rom (android 2.2.1 for Huawei U8150) both with an odex file, tried to:
- install touchpal (the keyboard i want) as a normal apk with no luck
- copy it to /system/app then reboot, no luck,
- universal deodexer v3 to deodex the apk, something went wrong 'cause i got some "0 files were copied" messages from it so... no luck
can you tell me what am not doing right? i dont want the market version of TouchPal since it doesn't has the 12-key layout, so i want to extract this stock rom keyboard

You copy touchpal.apk and touchpal.odex to system/app and set the permissions to 644 (rw-r-r). There may be additional files you may need to get language settings etc, which could be in system/usr and even maybe a lib or two in system/lib. But try it as i said first

Done
- files copied to /system/app (using total commander with root permission)
- permissions changed to 644 using a terminal emulator (in the phone)
- rebooted
Result:
- not showing yet under the language & keyboard settings
- not listed as an avaible keyboard on text boxes (when you hold the finger over and input method option shows)
What's the next step?

Chances are an android version 2.2 keyboard won't work on an ICS rom (I assume it's ICS). Maybe they've got a keyboard replacement in the forum for your phone

[Q] Can i use other keyboard on CM 9?

As title says - can i install new and may be better keyboard on CM9? Someone using another one?
I see there are JB keyboards, 4.1.2 Xperia Keyboards?

You can install any keyboard you like Just install the apk or copy over the apk & needed libs to your phone (app in /system/app and libs in the corresponding directory ) and set permissions 644 to get it working
Searching here would give you access to many different ones Reply here if you are looking for one in particular

extract swype from stock?

i'm running cm7.2 ultimate and previously used swype beta. however, this has expired as of today.
i'm wondering if i can extract the built in swype from the stock rom file(s).
i have a multiple files stock rom which contains swype (with the correct language included).
in which file can i find the swype.apk?
and it i succeed in extracting swype from te stock rom, will i be able to use it in my cm7.2 rom?
i read about a check that swype performs with build.prop so how can i make swype actually work on my ace with cm7.2?
(what should i edit in build.prop to succeed in the check and does it corrupt my rom when i edit my build.prop file?)
Brother install stock rom first and then create backup of swype file using root uninstaller ( i use that) and install it with correcting permissions using root explorer
Try lucky patcher on your expired beta of swype it may work
Hit thanks cos you wont die
Next time use Q&A THREAD, keep general thread clear!

thanks all,
I must say my question was not clear enough. I had a stock rom available and from that rom I've extracted the Stock Swype. I tried to get it to work using the instruction from Marine for another Phone. But unfortunately, It didn't work.
I'm on the ultimatum rom and extracted the swype from a 2.3.6 stock rom.
place the apk and libswypecore.so in the right folder and fixed permissions. i synced the files and rebooted the Phone as instructed but after that, Swype is available but doesn't work.
Anyone know what else I can do to fix this? Should I edit my build.prop?

What do you mean with "is available but doesn't work"??
When you switch in swipe keyboard it crashes? It force closes?

no forced closes. I can swype, but it doesn't show the words I swype. My entry field stays empty.
I've checked the apk / swype files and all the dictionary files are in there.
I read another thread here at XDA which told something about swype checking the build.prop file. So i've checked my build.prop with the build.prop in the stock rom. There were some differences (cooper instead of GT-S5830). So i've editted my build.prop, saved it and rebooted. After that, my phone wouldn't boot anymore so now i'm busy downloading the latest version of The Ultimatum rom to get my ace working again..
so editting build.prop isn't really the best option to do (unless you really confident that you know what you're doing, which I'm not).

try better keyboards like swiftkey or x touchpal ( i recommend x touchpal as u can conver that app to system and working, will not take space in internal memory as our ace is low with internal). hope i helped u
I don't think so...
Both Swiftkey and Touchpal X take up a heck lot of space, unlike what you claimed.
For example
Touchpal X : ~15MB
Stock Swype : ~3MB
And the stock Swype is better, in my opinion.
