Is there an app available that will display the current screen brightness setting either in a widget of in the notification bar? I don't need an app that changes the screen brightness. I need an app that will display what the current screen brightness percentage is and update the percentage readout as the screen brightness is altered by autobrightness.

I noticed everytime I swipe to check my notifications my brightness levels change forcing me to set them again. I don't like the auto brightness optiom so I wanted to know if there was an app that would lock the brightness levels
Not that I know of. There are widgets that let you toggle brightness options, but don't lock them there.
It sounds like your solution is to stop sliding your finger from left to right on the notification bar. That's what's changing your brightness. Just pull it straight down when you need it.
I may be misunderstanding the issue, but it sounds like the power saving setting under settings> sound and display. The option is at the bottom by tv out. Alternatively turn off auto brightness (assuming you haven't already.)
Edit: there's also a brightness setting in the browser (menu> more> brightness setting)

It seems that TouchWiz has a brightness toggle built into the notification bar. If you just barely pull down, then slide sideways, you change the brightness. Just pull down faster and/or straighter to avoid it.
i got cm7 on my htc inspire. i set my screen to adjust brightness by swiping across the status bar. but when i swipe it, brightness stays the same. just to let you know, the screen is not set to automatic brightness. how do i fix this?
Hi! My question is: Is there a BIG difference between leaving lowest brightness setting and auto-brightness? If so, how much? (Hours, battery usage, etc)
Thanks! I hope this thread will be informative for everyone..
Auto-brightness consumes more battery because it is constantly changing brightness, if you want the best battery power just use the lowest brightness
as aaitken said auto brightness consumes more battery . its better to use low brightness and use a brightness control widget from market and change the brightness manually when required

If you have a stock firmware, or a stock based ROM, you can adjust brightness anywhere you can access the notification bar. This is built into TouchWiz. Just hold your finger on the notification bar until you see the pull-down shade, and slide your finger left or right to adjust brightness.
I leave my brightness on lowest and adjust as necessary with this, i.e. when I'm in a bright setting, and need to turn my brightness up.
Also there is brightness options in AOKP with the toggles and in CM9 (and most other AOSP roms) as a power save widget bala_gamer's option's also a good way
Thank you very much for your helpful answers..
Is there a way to show the current display brightness set by Android's "auto" brightness?
I'd like to analyze sometimes in what level it's being set by the light sensor so I could consider controlling manually.
Sometimes it's just too high for the ambient, and could be using less battery.
I tried some apps on Google Play, like Brightness Motion, that show current screen brightness on widget or status bar but when in auto mode they'll only display "auto" instead of the percentage.

Have you tried this one? And here's another one.
Let us know if you find something that works.

Hi guys,
How do I adjust the screen brightness upon screen on when using wave control app? The screen is on but the light is not. So the screen is very dim for checking for any notifications on the status bar.
Thanks!!!
There is no 'light' behind the screen, that isn't how these work. The screen brightness is simply too low to read.
Disable the app and turn it up, simple.
If you don't like how it works in the app then contact the app maker and tell them.
Thank you!!!
