[Q] PhilZ-CWM installation - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have some questions concerning the installation of PhilZ-CWM. My phone details are at the end of the message. Thanks in advance for your help !
1) Kernel overwrite
From what I understood of traditional CWM, when installing on an i9100, it overwrites the current kernel (which would mean my actual ROM, very old one, would become unusable). Does PhilZ-CWM behave the same ?
2) What to download ?
I looked at the PhilZ-CWM thread for Galaxy S2 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/development-derivatives/philz-cwm6-stock-kernel-cwm6-root-exfat-t1877270 ) but I'm not sure what to download. I saw there are 2 installation methods : via zip on external sd or via odin. It seems the first method also roots the phone and I would like to avoid that (at least on the short term, as my phone OS is out of control).
What version do I need to download on Goo.im ? The latest one (6.48.4) ? Or are there any incompatibilities with my actual phone setup (particularly the fact that it's running gingerbread) and I need to download an old one ?
3) 2.3.3 support ?
After installation, will I be able to boot into my ROM and have a fully functional phone ? Or will I have to do a full backup and install a compatible ROM ?
PS : what I can do right now with my phone (apart from recovery menu actions) is very limited because of its current state ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/low-memory-uninstall-app-connect-adb-t2836974 )
Phone details :
Galaxy S2 (i9100)
Android 2.3.3 / official ROM (as always, customized by the cellular company, but only on apps I suppose)
Version : Gingerbread.XWKE2
Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE2-CL187606 [email protected] #2

Everytime you flash a Recovery, the kernel also gets overwritten. The Kernel and the Recovery are tied together.
However, the PhilZ-CWM you mentioned, is using a Stock-Kernel, which is very stable and safe.
The Kernel Version is sometimes important.
If you are planning to upgrade to ICS/JB, I would use (at least) an ICS Kernel.
If you are planning to keep Gingerbread, I would use a Gingerbread Kernel, to avoid instabilities.

Usually the method doesn't matter, but in this case the updater-script might be doing more, than the odin flash.
But as far as I know, the rooting behaviour can be changed using philz_installer.
I prefer the "zip on external sd" method, because this method is using an updater-script, which have some safety checks.
But you should also be safe, when using odin.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm afraid, that there is no gingerbread version, in this thread.
If you want a Stock Kernel and CWM you can try this thread. Don't be afraid of the rooting, you can always unroot your device at any time(*).
There is also a package which is using your Kernel (KE2). This package would therefore flash the same kernel, and you should have no problems with your ROM.
But any Gingerbread Kernel from this thread would be ok, I guess.
(*) When you root your device, a system binary called "su" is installed to /system/bin and a symbolic link at /system/xbin is created.
Nothing more, nothing less. If you remove these files, your phone is unrooted.

Flashing a GB Kernel and using a GB Rom should cause you no problems.
I'm not quite sure about ICS Kernels and GB Roms.
As far as I know, ICS is using a new file system (ext4), and it's very likely that you will not be able to boot your GB Rom.
Backup is always recommended.

You can root your device using a One-Click-Root for i9100 (this app is using the Exynos Exploit), and then delete the apps yourself with Root Explorer or ES Explorer.
You can delete the "su" binaries afterwards, and you have the same system as before.
Furthermore, flashing a Custom Recovery isn't necessary at all.
You could flash a Gingerbread Custom Recovery of your choice, make the changes you want in your system.
Then unroot the device and flash your Stock Kernel again. You can extract the Stock Kernel from the Official Firmware Updates.
Sidenote:
Flashing a custom kernel, can increase your custom binary counter (visible in Download Mode).
A stock kernel, shouldn't increase that counter. If your counter gets increased you can use the TriangleAway App.
However in my experience, flashing a Custom Recovery + Stock Kernel didn't increase my counter.
Hope this helps :victory:

It's always good practise to update your phone to the latest official release first then install a custom rom. I would recommend doing this to prevent any issues along the way of flashing a new rom.

Galaxy S 2 Android 2.3.3 Battery Drain

Hello,
I'm a noob, and I just want to fix my battery drain problem - that's it.
I have battery drain on my Android 2.3.3, and I've read a few threads about it which said that users should upgrade to 2.3.4.
I have a few questions:
1.How do I backup my factory firmware if I wish to go restore it in the future?
2.From where do I download Android 2.3.4? Samsung Kies says 2.3.3 is the newest one.
Thank you!

To be able to do a complete system backup, you will have to root your phone.
As you are a noob, I recommend to use the easiest rooting method => flashing a rooted kernel.
You may use Chainfire's CF-Root kernel from here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root
If using CF-Root kernel, you have to find the corresponding version for your ROM - like described in Chainfire's first post.
Alternatively, you can use another rooted kernel, such as SpeedMod kernel from here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498&highlight=Speedmod
CF-Root kernel is more "stock" (like the original/official kernel), whereas SpeedMod kernel is customized for a higher performance (speed) and better battery life.
As you want to get better battery life, SpeedMod kernel could be the better choice for you.
But it is your choice.
So, download the rooted kernel, flash it using Odin (like described in first post of the corresponding thread).
Both kernels will provide root access and ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery mode.
This is an extended recovery mode in which you have additional features such as complete system backup&restore, flash kernels/zip files, etc.
To boot into CWM recovery mode ...
1. Shut down the phone.
2. Press Volume UP + Home + Power buttons until the recovery mode appears.
Then choose backup&restore => backup to do a complete system / nandroid backup.
This will be saved on the internal sd card in "clockworkmod/backup" folder.
To restore this backup, you only have to flash a kernel containing CWM recovery mode to your phone, start CWM recovery mode and choose backup&restore => restore, then select the backup you want to restore.
P.S.: To get the latest official ROMs for the SGS2, have a look at Intratech's Official Firmware thread here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I recommend the latest official, stable and non-wipe ROM => XWKJ3.
As the Frankenstein versions in the third post are prepared for being combined with any Modem and/or CSC files, I prefer to flash those.
Good luck !

Rommanager , CWM on SGS2

Hello XDA-community,
I've rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2.
Model : GT-L9100
Android version : 4.0.3
Baseband : L9100XXLPW
Kernelversion : 3.0.15-L9100XWLPD-CL524746 [email protected] #3
Build : IML74K.XWLPD
I've read that I could get CWM on my phone by installing ROMmanager.
When I go in ROMmanager and use the option to install CWM.
It freezes around 95% , the app stops and give the option to quit rommanager.
After restarting Rommanager I see that i have "succesfully"installed CWM , but when I click on the start recovery my phone Freezes which only stops by pulling the battery.
What should I do to get CWM running.
There is a halve CWM on my phone , which I don't know how to remove.
And how do I get a working CWM since I need it for installing ROMS.
Also I dont trust ROMmanager atm so is there another app which could flash a rom , or is there a way to fix the rommanager?

Run away from ROM manager, it's not fully compatible with our phone.
You need ROOT access inorder to get CWM recovery.
Visit this THREAD for the safest rooting method
then flash this Siyah or Speedmod via CWM recovery in order to have a permanent CWM recovery (optional)

I am following the guide that you send me.
I've installed the CWM , but when I continue CWM blinks for a second resetting to the first option.
I have still acces to my phone or whatéver
I've found out that using the volume buttons makes it reset , but the touch screen works.
Now im backing up my phone and install root files.
But i get a message no sd-ex found and can't install the rooting file

@Jokesy - Just a quick info..Even i did a backup using CWM backup and it was successful. I am on stock ICS 4.0.3 XWLP7.
I think the phone would get bricked if you try backup using CWM on a phone that has stock ICS 4.0.4. Correct me if i am wrong here.

You are partially right.
**If you're trying to do a ROM backup in CWM recovery**
1. Yes, the phone will be bricked if you are running stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM with stock/stock-based kernel
2. No, even if you 1. is applicable to you but you have a sane emmc chip.
-The only reason why I don't want people to risk it even after confirming their emmc chip is sane, is because I want them to be 100% safe.
I'll juststop here because Other points might lead to greater confusion.

[Q] Safest way to avoid superbrick bug?

Galaxy S2 i9100.
Bad chip.
Bad Firmware: Stock 4.0.4 with (Stock) Kernel XWLPT.
Rooted with S2Root+Using SuperSU.
Searched forums, only similar thread is for Galaxy Tab. I'm assuming it's not relevant enough for me to follow it directly.
If possible, explain it like I'm 5:
What is the safest way to install a custom ROM? (Ideally, I want to install CM9 and later CM10 when it is more stable). I've seen people saying to flash Siyah kernel first, then do whatever afterwards. How can I do this? Almost a complete noob here, what buttons do I press in Odin and what procedure do I follow to flash a safe kernel then a custom ROM.
NB: USB is a little buggy, on-device flashing preferred for that reason.

Yes,, you need to flash a custom kernel.
1. First post your full ROM details
2. Can you confirm that you have ROOT access?
3. If your USB is buggy, you still flash Siyah kernel using mobile Odin, or the temporary CWM recovery. Root access is needed.
Thanks for the really fast reply.

1. Stock 4.0.4 from samsung; Kernel version 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023
2. 100% have root access. Running Droidwall (which is working) among other things
3. I'm unsure if it's the phone, USB port or drivers which are buggy.
Is it possible to get a definitive procedure to flashing Siyah with mobile Odin? (presuming it's safe to do so). After that, is it safe to just flash the full CM9 ROM with CWM?
The safest way to avoid the emmc bug is to flash a custom kernel. Like siyah or dorimanx. If you have root access, and CWM, you can install one of them. Do you have CWM? well then follow these steps.
-Download a custom kernel. Eg the .ZIP file of the latest version of siyah kernel for S2 from gokhanmoral's site.
-Store it in your internal SD card on your phone.
-Boot into recovery. ( Vol-up + Home + Power button )
-Go to: install zip from SD -> install zip from internal SD
-select the kernel's zip file
-select 'yes'
Let the phone reboot once your done. You should have a custom kernel and no chance of the emmc bug bricking your phone.
The reason I suggest using CWM rather than Odin, is incase you have a faulty usb port, that might pose a problem while installing via Odin.
Hope this helps.

I have root access but no CWM. When I originally rooted the phone the sole reason was for droidwall.
Is it safe to install CWM and flash a custom kernel as long as I don't do any data wipes?
Can I install a custom kernel and have the phone as is (without noticeable differences) until I flash a custom ROM?
What happens to SuperSU and it's settings when I flash a custom kernel (and will I still have root access)?
Finally, if anything screws up what is the recovery procedure? I don't have a copy of this kernel/firmware as I installed it as an OTA update.

You can make a nandroid backup with cwm. That will create an image of the current state of your phone to restore incase necessary. Just make sure u have a custom kernel and follow steps mentioned in the guides on this site and you shouldn't need to worry

I've installed Mobile Odin (v3.35)
I've installed FlashKernel (v2), there was a v1 higher up the page but I'm going to assume that v2 has some bug fixes or other updates (please correct me if I should be using FlashKernel-I9100-v1 rather than v2.
Now, I'm not sure where to go: Should I install CWM or flash straight to Siyah kernel. CWM seems safer since I can do a backup and hopefully have some access if anything goes wrong.
How do I flash CWM with Mobile Odin? Which flash (mode? partition? not sure about terminology here) do I choose (Kernel, ..., etc) and probably importantly: which version of CWM should I be using? I've seen many threads talking about CWM4/5/6. Are they simply updated versions? designed for different kernels/android versions? Are there any specific versions which try to mitigate the superbrick bug?

Flash Siyah kernel straight using mobile Odin. It comes with a permanent CWM recovery too.
Todays almost all kenels are safe
so resure yourself
And be careful, when you flash rom in recoverymod
if. battery is off when flash rom, your device have hard brick
so you must have change your main board

Siyah kernel flashed and working perfectly. Didn't realise how instant it would be. Thanks again to everyone, this community is friendly and helpful.
I'm just wondering as I'm in the same boat as the OP was once in.
When it comes to choosing the Kernel does it matter if its JB based or ICS because I'm on the stock ICS rom.

You don't have root access, right? Flash a custom kernel with Odin (like Siyah), but make sure it's compatible with your firmware. So if you're flashing Siyah, flash the version (v4 and/or v5 is what I thought) that's meant for ICS, otherwise your phone won't work.

Actually I used another method that allowed me to gain root access, but I'm on stock kernel and rom. I kind of feel safer when flashing a kernel and rom from recovery.
So say I use Siyah ICS for my Stock ICS rom, If I wanted to flash a JB rom like the one leaked from samsung would I need to also flash the Siyah kernel for JB too?
I have I9100T as well and 4.0.4 on it, what do I do? Will Siyah work for me?

[Q] galaxy s 3 advice required

Dear fellow members
Device :samsung galaxy s 3 gt-i9300
android version : 4.1.2
baseband version :xxemg4
build number jzo54k.i9300xxemg4
I am a newbie to rooting and custom rom flashing.
Recently I decided to install a custom rom in my phone as i was tired of the slowness and the lag from the samsung orignal jb version 4.1.2
I started of by rooting my phone on 27/9/13 usin odin 3 v 1.85 and the file CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar by selecting it in the pda options. i read the intrustions from android rooting .com .
but when i began to create a back up it gave me a warning in cwm manager v 3.60 that this version of cwm manager should be used with cf-cwm v1.1 or newer. it appears you are running a different recovery.various features have been disabled.
further when i restarted my fone in to creating back up mode it said cannot mount path.
Now i want a cool new custom rom in my phone and i dont want to screw up my phone.
I need advice on what should i do next?
is backing up my phone is really that important ?
now that my phone is rooted should i flash a custom rom?
if so which custom rom is the best in my case scenario?
i am completely new to this and i immediately stopped after doing what i just explained above.
Thankyou in advance for your suggestions and help.

never use cwm manager to flash roms/recoveries! as the phone is already rooted, flash philz recovery via odin(a newer version 3.07 might be better). then flash any custom rom(can not recommend one). check out the rom features in the respective thread and flash it on yours.

Your phone is now rooted but as it says unable to mount path. What do you mean to say unable to mount SD card??
well this had happened to me too... What I did is enabled the debugging mode from settings and again followed the steps of rooting phone assuming the phone isn't rooted. make sure your sd card is inserted while rooting.. after successful rooting you can again check it works or not... hope this helps you...

Cannot boot into custom recovery mode - Android 2.3.3

I have a Galaxy SII i9100 (Canadian model from Bell) which I have rooted but is still on the stock ROM of Android 2.3.3. As many apps these days require Android 4 or above, I would like to upgrade to a newer ROM.
However, I have been unable to boot into custom recovery mode to start the process and make a backup of the current system. I have Clockwork Mod and ROM Manager installed, but every time I try booting into recovery mode (either using the 3 button combination or the option in the CWM and ROM Manager software), I end up with Android's recovery mode. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I can do to fix it?
In addition to getting help with this, I would also like to ask what ROM people recommend upgrading to. It does not need to be an official ROM from Samsung. I would like something stable, full-featured, and without much bloatware. Someone mentioned a Chameleon ROM, which sounds like a good option.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Maybe flash CWM with odin again.
Try another version.
Or try the Philz-Kernel.
ROM: I recommend "Beanstalk 5.0" to you.
If you what to be up to date: Ressurrection Remix newest version.

Thanks! How would I get another version of CWM and/or flash it with Odin? And what is the Philz-Kernel?

Search "CMW I9100" f.e.
LP or above use Version 6.
Philz-Kernel gives you root and a useable CMW in one step with odin.
search "philz I9100" f.e.
Finding Philz file

Okay. I would like to try installing PhilZ, but I have no idea which version I would need. How do I figure it out? I'm on a Galaxy S2 i9100 running Android 2.3.3. Does the Android version matter? Thank you again.
