Custom ROMS Question - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been flashing custom ROMs for a few years now and I've noticed something that I've always been meaning to ask about. At first a lot of ROMs are great. As daily drivers they work with very few if any bugs. Now I'm talking "stable" ROMs, not beta or nightly. But over time it seems like they become buggy. Does anyone else experience this? Even if you don't flash the updated kernel or newest gapps.... it just starts to get buggy. Anyone else experience this?

Only UCLF6 roms are stable

Whenever I flash a rom that's not stock based I get all kinds of trouble (force closing, random restarts, etc) any idea of what's causing these problems? Thanks

That is a long list my friend....
the causes of rom issues are many, but likely the biggest reason is this.
Stock roms and their variants are generally very stable, due in large part, to the fact that the builds were designed for our particular device.
They are programmed to simply work.
Now if you are using a rom that is ported over for our note, it likely contains bugs, missing data, drivers etc. that the stock rom already has working.
Many builds are alpha level quality, and "will" give you problems..but developers, rom cookers, will fix these issues one by one, until a stable build is reached.
If you want a solid and reliable rom, you simply need a stock build, or one of it's variants, that will contain the needed data to make the device run as it should...
I hope this helps explain the issues a bit more for you.....g
I have no issues on ParanoidAndroid 2 with KKO.8 kernel. Do you wipe all directories when installing the non-touchwiz ROM?
There are so many different reasons, just because we have the same phone/model does not mean we will have the same effects. Different apps, for different users...
As ICS is stable and Official, the newness of JBean is there, there are plenty of great stable Jbean ROMs out, you have to ensure you are following the OPs in detail without any deviation.
Thank You

[Q] instability because of kernel?

Hi all,
Until recently I have been having very unstable results with my SGS2 (gt-i9100), every time the phone would freeze, overheat, use most of the battery in 2 seconds (figuratively speaking that is) or rebooting itself.
Some people on this forum told me to try a different kernel or roms, something I did and well no real improvement, I tried combinations of ressurection remix, omega and kernels such as siyah and dorimanx (I tried more but these are the ones I still remember by name)
Luckily (or unfortunately) I love my phone and android so I didn't really want to change hardware.
Couple of weeks ago, I figured that maybe I should try yet another rom and... SUCCESS!!
Ever since flashing AOKP milestone 1 everything is the way it should be (well to be honest first thing I always do when getting a new phone is rooting it and getting a new rom, so I am not sure how "normal" out of the box operating of an android is :silly
So basically my question to you is:
does the instability have anything to do with the kernel? currently using 3.0.31-cm-00008 (which incidentally, is that CyanogenMod?)
if it is related to the kernel, anyone has any suggestions to make dorimanx/siyah work (as they seem to be pretty popular here on xda, I'm guessing it has more to do with me)
and less kernel related, if a rom is AOKP based (or CM or whatever), does that mean that this rom has all the bugs from the base + the things the specific rom has?
Thanks!

1. May or may not be, usually it's kernel related, yeah that is the usual kernel made for CyanogenMod
2. The latest dorimanx does work fine with xwlsn and so does the latest siyah for xwlss.
3. An AOKP rom has different frameworks and usually is more buggier than stock rom, because of closed source codes (blame Samsung) several features are disabled or improperly functioning.

AOKP or CM?

Any word on nighties starting for CM? Is AOKP in the works for this device?
Haven't seen or heard anything, but I'm reallllly hoping something happens soon
Until all the bugs are worked out in the stock ROM I wouldn't expect anything soon
I saw something about CM 11 being uploaded, but there weren't any other details.

which ROM should I use?

Hi all,
I'm currently using the stock firmware 4.2.2 and I don't have any problem yet, it seems fast and everything but I heard custom rom are usually faster.
I have checked a few roms and I'd like to try them but what I usually see when trying to decide what rom to install is that features that are improved are usually listed but there's not a list of things that don't work or don't work as good we in the stock firmware.
For example, it seems like some rom have problems with gps, other with audio, some with wireless.
There are two roms I would like to choose from
-HTC OneX+ INTER CM10.2 (4.3) Nightlies & M1
and
-CarbonRom UNOFFICIAL JB 4.3.1 - 2013_11_11
which one would you advise? and what problems do they have?
is it there something else that you would advise me to install instead?
Thank you
What ROM to use is very subjective and really varies user by user. The best way to get information is to start reading the ROM threads and then when you have enough information flash it and see if it works for you.

Miui v5

I have found this posted on the Miui site and I can make calls but no data. Any help would be great.

These kinds of builds are generally kind of buggy the first few releases. I would flash something else for now and come back later. Love me some miui mmm
