[Q] "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" message after loading modded setting APK - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

[Q] "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" message after loading modded setting APK
I tried to black out some things per this guide:
www [dot] gs5 [dot] wonderhowto [dot] com/how-to/black-out-system-apps-your-samsung-galaxy-s5-for-better-battery-life-0156502/
It involves replacing some original apk's with some modded black themed ones. I was stupid and didn't back up any of the original apk's. It was all for nothing as nothing got blacked out and the original apk's stuck, however, I can no longer access my settings. I get the "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." message every time I attempt to open the setting menu.
What should I do to fix this? I looked for the original SecSettings.apk for our phone to try and reverse what I had done and I could not find it online. Would this fix the problem? If so where can I find this? If not, what can I do?
Help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you are rooted since you modified some apk's, without knowing which ones you changed and since you didn't save them to just put them back, you may want to run a nandroid assuming you have one and then just rename the apk's you want to change to .bak and then try again.

Only the Settings one got messed up and won't open. I didn't backup. I'm pretty much just looking for SecSettings.apk for T-Mo GS5 at this point. I can't think of another solution.

Download root Explorer, easiest one to use, goto where you changed the apk, long press on the apk you changed and set the permission to the same as all the others, look at the permissions of one you didn't mess with first and then set the permissions. The reboot. If you are not rooted, root Explorer will not work for you...

And I would highly recommend before you screw with your phone anymore, subscribe to the T-Mobile forums and read read read, you don't want to screw your phone up, and if you still don't get it, ask people, there are plenty of people here willing to help but many will blast you for not doing a little research yourself. And avoid websites for phone hacks and stuff, stick to the forum, these are well tested and experienced devs that build for us, appreciate all they do.

Your post didn't give us a lot of detail about how you went about the changes, which makes it difficult to provide targeted help. But probably if you wipe the cache from recovery mode, then go to the application manager in the settings menu and clear the cache and data for the system app in question, it will more than likely resolve the error message.
In the alternative, download the full stock firmware and extract the stock .apk so that you can revert to a stable system. And remember to make a backup next time.
Also, there are literally hundreds of threads on this subject, so I can only presume that you didn't bother searching before posting. A search should always be your first step since existing threads invariably have a wealth of information and in the majority of cases give you an immediate answer.
Good luck

Uninstalling CM7

Hi all,
I have used the uninstaller that is posted within the Rootwiki page, it seemed to do its buisness ( pages of script rolling down the screen),so after it reboots i used Webos doctor....... i still have all the files and folders still from the CM7 install, so i am guessing the uninstall did not remove the partition so not acheived i believe what it is meant to, or just me, any ideas to put back to stock Webos......Loved CM7 but will wait until the final release,

Well, I did the dual boot install and can't find anything wrong with it other than a wifi disconnect over night which a toggle off and on fixed. Even bluetooth worked and I transfered files from laptop! Next thing is to check if it will see an external BT GPS receiver.
If you are going to wait for a "more stable" release why not leave everything as is and be all ready for it?
Yeah i thought the same, but i have a bit of OCD and need things as they should be sometimes, however after trolling the internet and other forums websites i tried using various webos apps and it looks like the partitions have gone, as it could not find them, however after another session with doctor, still see the tenderloin referance in internals but i do have a full 16gb showing as storage, so manually deleted the files from internalz....... so to cap it i believe even the uninstall and a doctordo not delete fully all the files i.e boof referances.

Help w/kitting and staging 200 HTC Views

Hi all,
I have about 200 HTC Views that need to be identical for our customers.
Is there a way to save an image of a completed view and load that image onto the reaming 199 devices?
Each Device needs to be identical and have the following:
•charge the battery
•create a screen pass
•encrypt the tablet
•create a gmail account
I figure I would have to manually configure the steps above and load an image for the steps below?
•delete all desktop icons
I have been deleting each app one by one is there an easier way to clear screens of apps?
•change the screen timeout value to 10 minutes
•Allow Unknown Sources in Applications
•install 9 applications-preloaded on an SD card
•place 10 shortcuts & 1 bookmark on the home screen and the next screen.
Is it possible to delete the screens on the view? I only need 2 of them.
•set black wallpaper
Hi Everyone.
I just wanted to ask if I was posting my questions in the wrong section??
You should be able to setup up one machine and load a nandroid backup of it (from clockwork mod recovery) to flash the other machines. I think you'd need to go through the steps of revolutionary s-off, which flashes clock work mod, after that it should be easy enough.
Views/flyers are easy to work with.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that any method to save or flash an image or backup of anything other than the stock updates onto the View will require root access on each device.
Some of what you are asking requires changes in the Base OS which will mean rooting, and having a developer build you a rom. Once you have a built rom you can just flash it onto all of your devices, although I don't fully understand why it's imperative to remove all apps/widgets from the screen.

Nope. When you boot it up first time, HTC makes the tablet follow certain things which can't be changed without some tweaks. Plus, why do you want all that bloatware to be on there bogging down the memory?
Thanks for all your help! My work wants all the apps removed from the screens and setup a certain way.
You may want to confirm work is ok with you rooting the devices... Some IT groups are very against that.
Honestly, I'd contact HTC.
I have been working with HTC and they can't offer much help since they don't have enough experience
with encrypting the tablets

Well your going to have to do it 1 by one if you choose not to s-off or dev unlock them, you don't necessarilly have to root them, just s-off or unlocked. S-off would probably be a hell of a lot faster.

removing superuser after ics update

Hi,
I finally got the XEU ICS update on my i9100-gt.
but now am stuck with a superuser app i cannot get rid of.
I don't want to root again but want to removed this app
any ideas?
Yes, please someone help. This is annoying me.
Download Android System Info(its free) from Google play. It has the option to uninstall superuser.
sorry just tried it and it does not uninstall.
From within the SuperSU app, go to settings, scroll down to cleanup then full unroot.
SuperSU will be uninstalled.
Just tried it and it works.
Superuser would have been pushed as a system app before the update. The update sounds like its removed root rights, leaving the Superuser app stock.
I don't think you'll be able to remove it without root, so use this guide below, it shows you how to root / unroot your device without flashing kernels. Hope it helps

Thx for replying! But which "instructions" do you mean? I am sorry I don't understand your comment ....
Regarding flashing, I have read numerous posts during the last days regarding how to do this, and I think I now know how to do it with heimdal (I have a Mac), but the question I have what should I flash?
I understand that I can flash only the partition I need to flash; there is no need to flash everything (less risks). I found the Rom for my phone (I9100XWLSD_I9100OXXLS6_NEE.zip, for Nordic countries in EU) and downloaded the pit file from the telephone. The pit file is a partition table, showing the different partitions of the phone: image, param, modem, factory's, sb1.bin, boot.bin, hidden, cache.img. I do not have all corresponding files in the zip file, but I have read this is no problem.
If the su app has put files in the root system (as reported in various posts), shouldn't I flash the "factoryfs" (=factory file system?) partition? It looks this one holds the system.
Does flashing the kernel ("zimage") do the trick? Or do I mix up what is contained in what?
If I don't need to flash, I would prefer not to do so (little scared..), so I would like to understand exactly what is described in the previous post. Unfortunately I do not understand the cryptical text. It's for sure simple for experts, but difficult for me, not being an expert like the rest of the people in this forum. Your explanations are appreciated !

the issue is that after flashing different kernel i am unable to switch from Dalvik to ART...i need a stock kernel so i can flash it and use ART.
Hope that helps!
I am also having few problems with these stock ROMs.
Icons on the lock screen are misplaced (little to the left).
Can't completely remove notification sounds (make them silent).
The AT&T and HTC images at the bootscreen are smaller (there is a big black frame).
I will post pictures when I get back home from work.
sorry guys if i bothered you with my stupid questions but i found the problem that was preventing me from switching Dalvik to ART. it was xposed framework that caused the issue and after i uninstalled the framework i was able to switch to ART thanks for your help anyway

wheres the rom? On the DL page, there is nothing but a list of devices, none of which seem to be htc, much less 610.
Ok, figured that out... My trouble is, I cant seem to get root working! I installed rooted rom, even the kernal that goes with it, but still can not remove apps from att. Thats kinda my whole goal, but not having much luck getting it going. Any ideas what Im doing wrong??

If you're using the at&t 610, flash the Rom and kernel. Go to the play store after signing into your Google account.
Download the kitkat sd card fix and titanium backup.
Make sure you have the latest busybox and root binaries before hand.
Use the sd card fix app, restart your phone. Once it turns back on, wait a solid minute as it runs the start up. Now go into titanium back up and start deleting apps.
That should do it.
If not, follow up with deleting the app and it's associated .apk in your system/apps folder.

I think now I can Root. Because my phone now have another rom . I got this new rom from official Jio Care . I went there because I bricked my device when tried to flash a recovery found from the internet. I tried this flashing because the 'factory test mode' was gone after I tried to root with king root .it was showing a 'no command' error when I am trying to go to 'factory test mode' I did that flashing only to restore that. But it ended in a bricked device. So I had to go there and they helped me. I also asked them for stock rom but they didn't give me. I didn't check king root yet with this rom. The current rom i have is same as yours. Ls 4006.
But I don't clearly think which I had before. I guess that was Ls 4007.

So have you uninstalled all those bloatwares from your phone .?
If you did so , you had any problems because of the so-called system app removal?.
I'm asking this because I used to disable all those useless system apps , but as a result this phone was restarting frequently without my knowledge. So I did suspect this app disabling and so I restored all these disableed apps. And then the problem solved. You had any issues like this,?
Now I heard about an bloatware removal tool and I wish to try that to get a rid of this bloatwares.
What you say?

I'm a little worried because I don't have any stock rom backup so if something went wrong like something I mentioned in the above post , I have to go again the LYF Care . So you please just check whether all those apps mentioned above are removed or not.
If you still have any apps mentioned above just take it's backup apk using SD Maid and uninstall those apps. So that you can check whether any system instability arises due to the uninstallation.
Please check right now and tell me. I'm waiting for your reply.

Ok. And you had no issues?
So Ok. Hope there won't be any problems. I will be proceeding to the uninstallation.

No .There will be no issues. I will suggest you uninstalling through lucky patcher.I found it best for such operations. You may encounter 'unfortunately stopping pop-up messages of applications' .so don't worry just restart your device.I did the same

You would probably be doing so for freeing up some system space.I will suggest you to update app to system(apps like play store, play services and some other useful system apps keep the original system stock app even if you update the application). So you should integrate update to system which will remove the old system app by updated one so you will have much more free space and whenever you factory reset your device ,you will get the updated system apps installed.

I have downloaded those files you have uploaded. I have a few questions about it.
Did you ever tried to flash it to phones other than yours. ?
If you have done it, did you flash it using just fastboot or used any other special software?
You have also provided a twrp recovery. But that recovery doesn't have boot.img and system.img missing. That doesn't seems okay . Are you sure about it ? Please check it.
How did you root your device?
I been trying Kingroot for a while but it's not working for me.
My build number is LYF_LS_01_12
I am also planning to build a custom ROM based on the stock ROM because in the latest update, they made the icons look really ugly . Also it will be a practice for me learn custom ROMing.
But before I proceed, your suggestions would be helpful for me.
So please make some time to answer those questions above.
Once again thank you very much for your effort to upload those files with that slow connection.
Very thank full to you

Not flashable ????
I'm no developer yet but I thought you are. I was so happy when I see those files. It's sad when you says not flashable.
But okay , I am learning about flashing and custom ROMing and I will do my level best to help you guys.
I will be soon starting a new thread with full details about those files given by you. Let's see what Devs here talks about it. I really need to root and custom ROM it. Only problem is that I don't have any other phone for testing. I got only this one for all of my needs. I thought you already flashed it in your phone.
Anyway, thanks for your help and let's see what I can do.
Bye. See you .
