[Q] WIFI/GPS issues Stock then Slimkat 4.4.4 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Device: Galaxy S3
ROM: Slimkat
ROM version: Slim-4.4.4.build.6-OFFICIAL-5242
Build: slim_d2lte-userdebug 4.4.4 KTU84P 5242 test-keys
Kernel: 3.4.95-cyanogenmod-gd56ed95
I purchased my S3 in April of last year (4.1 Jellybean), and at the time the wifi worked perfectly. After the first (or second?) OTA that was pushed to my device, my wifi started acting up. It would cut out and I would have to cycle the wifi off and back on in hopes it would work again. I have been patient hoping they would push an OTA that would finally fix it. A year or so and a few OTA (I don't recall how many, or which versions) later and it still doesn't work properly, so I decided to finally try a custom rom to see if it would solve the issue. The last stock version of android I was using was the 4.4.2 OTA.
I rooted my device using towelroot, flashed CWM Recovery (CWM_6.0.4.7_Non-Touch_GT-I9300) using ODIN 3.04, then proceeded to flash the Slimkat rom listed above using CWM recovery. The wifi seems to be better, but it still cuts out and is unresponsive even though it says I have full wifi signal. A wifi cycle seems to fix it temporarily, but I'd like to solve this issue.
So as far as I can tell the last working modem I had was stock 4.1 or so. So I guess my question is, can I flash previous modems to try to get a working one with this rom? I have tried using WIFI Fixer from play store, and even with full signal on WIFI I get signal poor, signal hop scan messages spammed. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

wifi fix

Ok. So here's a little tidbit of info.
I had a tenderloin ics build (the first ics one, 0.4 based).
Everything worked fine. But every time i would upgrade to a newer nightly build based off .6 or whatever, wifi would never work.
It would just not turn on, you could toggle it on but it just wouldn't do anything.
I was using CWM to update, and after every update i would have to back down to that first ics build to turn on wifi.
So i practically gave up for a week or so. Then i broke down and tried the ACMEInstaller2 method. Booted to the latest nightly build and presto, wifi turned on first try.
So those who are stuck with a broken wifi, try that install method. Not sure what's different. Maybe i have a broken CWM that doesn't update everything. Maybe it's some sort of bug, not too sure.
Enjoy.
report back after a week and if you didn't encounter any issues at all i'll do that

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 stuck on 'turning WI-FI on'

Hi Team,
I have a GT-19100T which had the carriers firmware (Vodafail AU) 4.1.3 (rooted) running with no problems until recently (2 wks ago), prior to the fault I have had this phone for years no glitches great phone for its age.
I had let the battery drain, upon re-energizing the phone and attempting to turn on the wireless i noticed it just reported "Turning WI-FI on" and the toggle switch was greyed out. this would last all day. switching the phone off and on would not stop the process of the phone attempting to turn wi-fi on.
I immediately went searching forums and people suggested hardware fault or perform factory wipe through CWM.
Troubleshooting I have performed so far is:
- factory wipe and cache cleanup (not resolved)
- flashed to CM 10.1.3 (not resolved) (multiple times)
++++
OS: 4.2.2
Baseband: 1900TDULP4
kernal version: 3.0.64-cm-g9c2e2bc
++++
I have found from research that the Bluetooth and wi-fi are the same module (I maybe wrong) and Bluetooth is working fine.
So this leads me to suspect a software/firmware fault.
I'm currently downloading I9100TDVLSM_I9100TVAULSF_VAU.zip from (sam mobile) the latest release for this phone from the carrier to see if firmware will resolve the problem.
In the mean time any suggestion, advice, help or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe if someone knows of a file i can flash specifically for wi-fi module that I could try.
Thanks in advance

I have same problem few weeks ago when my galaxy on Stock Rom 4.1.2.
Later, I try to reflash again through Odin, then install CWM and I flash CM 10.2 4.3 through CWM and it solved.
I think you should try to flash Newer Rom version, example CM10.2 or SlimKat.
Good luck

Thanks mate for your reply,
I installed cm 11, this did not resolve it.
need the file for the radio/modem, i'm hoping this will fix it but not sure exactly what I am looking for.
**Update***
Just finished installing I9100TDVLSM_I9100TVAULSF_VAU (latest release from Sam Mobile) 4.1.2
Still wi-fi not working.
will try and install cm 10.2 on your recommendation huytrandinh
Okay latest nightly of CM is installed cm-10.2-20131216-NIGHTLY-i9100.
Still has not resolved the wi-fi issue.
anyone have a potential solution?
there is this post for S4, but obviously only viable for S4

There is also this video tutorial which is for S4

Try to flash a modem using odin,
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Modem won't solve the issue as WiFi/BT drivers are in the kernel on the S2. OP was on the right track, but for whatever reason a clean install of stock didn't fix the problem.
Maybe try the 3 part firmware in Hopper8's Odin Troubleshooting thread, then a clean install of the Voda stock rom after that ?
There's 'WiFi fixes' (which are actually the LTE modem) for the I9505 as it actually has two separate modems, and the LTE modem also controls WiFi (which isn't the case with the S2 as per my comment above).

I tried the modems from here:
##hxxtp://###.veyka.co.uk/sgs2/radios/## (unable to post links ffs)
and few other random links from the forums

Thanks Mistahbungle,
I checked out that thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2345831
Nothing i could really use.
But I did try a few other kernels:
Siyah-s2-v5.0.1
Unfortunately as soon as flashing with other kernels the screen would go black after the initial boot logo.
Only way to resolve it not booting into the OS was to roll back to:
1. GT-I9100_JB_ClockworkMod-Recovery_6.0.2.9 (flashed with odin)
2. flash CWM-SuperSU-v0.97 with CWMRecovery
3. install cm-10.2-20131216-NIGHTLY-i9100
4. then your general cleaup through cwmrecovery
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong when trying to apply another kernel.
anyone able to offer assistance please with right kernel?
cheers

Just found a post in that thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2345831&page=6
Will try the 3 part rom XXLSJ for GT-I9100.
Fingers crossed
Yeah, that's what I suggested in my PP. Sorry, seems the 3 part was on HotFile & Hopper didn't have his own copy up somewhere.
The rationale was - there's possibly something from a previous installation causing your issues, and flashing the 3 part would wipe your phone. I realise you've done this manually, but at this stage you're fast running out of ideas before you declare it a possible hardware issue, and it was worth a shot.
So...What I'd try is - while you have a rooted phone, go into CWRecovery and format everything/ (not EFS though obviously, or your external card if you have one), then try re-flashing whatever stock firmware you have with Odin in download mode.
Edit - Also, maybe do a Google search for that 3 part firmware (details are still on Samfirmware, just that the files are gone), you never know, you might find it somewhere.

Okay just finished testing the rom by installing it via odin (3 part)
still has not yielded any favorable results .
Little disapointed as this was a great backup phone and served for the past 12 months as a mp3 player
Guess as they say; It is all planned obsolescent which is fracked ...
Thanks for the suggestion/help anyway.
I know this is an old thread but my gs2 had this problem and I was able to fix it. Using es file explorer made my way to /data/misc/wifi pulled up the properties to wpa_supplicant.conf and changed group to wifi...then wifi finished initializing...hope this helps somebody
Sent from my SM-T310 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
for consideration.
I have this phone. the GT-i9100. Had this issue also. I took it apart. The little onboard battery had blown and corrosion got all over all it.
and guess where WiFi hard is. Right Next door. I cleaned it up real good. Put it back together and WiFi came back to life.
So give it some thought guys.

Wifi issue persists with KitKat?

A few days ago, the wifi connection to my Verizon Note II stopped working. I see a strong signal from my router, and it attempts to connect, but inevitably gets "Authentication Error". It did the same thing with other networks, so it's not just my home wireless.
This is a well-known problem with 4.1.2 - and has been for a while. Google it. I did, and quickly went down a rabbit hole, leaving me frustrated, confused and still no closer to a fix. So I installed a 4.3 ROM, which also required an updated firmware.
I was using Jelly Beans 22 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032447)
I wiped everything and installed JellyWiz 4.3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2564495) with TWRP and VRUEMJ9 WIfI Firmware via Odin.
And still the error persists.
F** it. I'll jump to KitKat.
So I wiped everything again, updated TWRP, and installed Gummy (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2592339)
STILL NO WORKING WIFI. Same "Authentication" error
In between the above steps, I have tried literally everything I could find to fix this problem. Restarting my router (duh), changing settings in the wifi menu, the hidden "service mode" menu, energy saving, even dropping the /etc/wifi directory and replacing with a copy from 4.1.1.
What silly, stupid, inane detail did I miss?
SCH-I605
Android Version 4.4.2
Baseband I605VRUEMJ9
Kernel 3.0.64-gummy...
Have you updated to the mj9 firmware?
Fine. I'm done dealing with this, I thought, and nuked the phone back to the stone age.
Using Odin and instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207 I flashed back to 4.1.1 and a full factory reset.
Still. No. F***g. Wifi.
I have now spent the entire weekend upgrading and downgrading my Note II, to no effect. I'm almost *almost* convinced it's a hardware problem. If it didn't match so many other examples of a 4.1.2 wifi bug, to a T.
Anyhow, to the Verizon store I shall venture on the morrow, and demand satisfaction.

Yep. As part of flashing to 4.3 and Jelly Wiz.
No dice.
Did you use Odin or the flashable zip? ONLY the Odin method works. I tried using the zip, and while my phone said it was on mj9, it didn't update anything but the modem. This left me unable to use my WiFi on anything over 4.1. I hope this can be of some help

stock wifi issue

Ok guys. I browsed through the forums for this but can only find my issue on custom Roms. My issue is with my wife's phone on the Stock Rom. I rooted her phone the other night and since then her phone has no wifi signal til a reboot then her wifi comes back in nice and strong.
Is this a known root issue? Her phone is on 4.0.1, which I believe is the latest firmware for this phone to date. The only thing I did after rooting was, of course, install apps necessary for root and flashed a security program. Nothing else.

Root went wrong, NO RIL, NO 4G (SIII I9305, Android 5.1.1)

Phone: S3 I9305
ROM: Resurrection-Remix-LP-v5.4.8
Baseband: I9305XXUFNI3
RIL: Unknown
Dear forum, I rooted and updated my phone a while ago, and it went wrong. I hope you can help me understand what I did wrong and hopefully to get it back to work.
My problem is that everything works except for the 4G, so I can call and text, and wifi works for the Internet. Battery time is much better, but I do have a lot of problems with google services that doesnt work, so I am also in need to update to the latest resurrection update.
My question is: How do I repair the 4G / destroyed RIL?
What I did a month ago:
I used TWRP to do a recovery. I first used version 2.8.7.0. and destroyed the 4G. After that I did a recovery using TWRP 2.8.5.0., used Odin to install [ROM][I9305][5.1.1]*22.11.2015* RESURRECTION REMIX 5.5.9[OFFICIAL][FINAL] and used gapps from opengapps (stock)
I have read a lot, to try to understand how to solve the problem:
1. Would a EFS repair hel?
2. Is it possible to go back to stock and fix stuff?
As I have no idea what caused the problem (but it happened after the use of TWRP if I remember correctly) I hope somebody can help.
