[Q] Choppy Sound w/ USB DAC - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys - having some issues recently with my Z2 and USB DAC output; though frankly hi res output hasn't worked properly unless I use USB Audio Recorder app.
But usually, if I keep Hi Res Audio via USB unchecked, Pandora & Beats Music will output properly. That's been the case through .402 firmware. I have .314 installed right now and with the USB option checked or unchecked, music starts off smooth and then becomes choppy. I'm on .314 rooted with the bootloader locked (it has been unlocked in the past ... just used the locked bootloader root method the last time I upgraded the firmware).
The only mod I have installed is the dual stereo speakers for speakerphone. Any suggestions? Should I do a clean FTF install or something? Go back to .402 maybe?
Thanks,
Praz

UPDATE:
I did a fresh install of the US/Canada .314 firmware and then rooted via the exploit (kept the bootloader locked). Aside from USB Audio Player Pro, any other output via USB ends up in choppy audio. I dropped Sony support an e-mail and they were useless, so I'm at a loss as to what's causing the issue - the phone or something else?
Those who unlocked your bootloaders and / or rooted, and are using USB DACs w/ the Z2 - is everything working ok?
Thanks,
Praz.

UPDATE 2:
Did a full repair via PC Companion, only installed Spotify and tested w/ DAC. Same issue with or without USB enhancement enabled. Hmm. Running out of ideas.

UPDATE 3:
So after much ado, it just looks like there are some compatibility issues with the Z2 and Fiio X5 in DAC mode. I came home and connected the Z2 to my full size Schitt Gungnir DAC's USB input and everything works perfectly. Then I grabbed my HRT Microstreamer and ....it's working perfectly now too! I hadn't actually tried it for several weeks so may have been something to do with prior setup I guess.
Anyway ..tentatively, looks like I'm good mostly. X5 bad. Microstreamer good.

Out of curiosity did you get any crackling noises with the microstreamer? That's what I'm experiencing now. Happens after about 4 minutes of play time.

Yes, eventually it did start crackling. Someone on head-fi explained it to me here:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/720785/sony-xperia-z2-vs-nw-zx1-walkman
Still, I never had problems with my Note 2 or Note 3, so perhaps they're using different USB drivers. If you use USB Audio Player Pro, though, there's no crackling. It's only if you're using the native Sony Walkman app or any streaming app like Pandora / Spotify / etc.
Hope that helps!

Hrm interesting I've been getting the same issue running cm11 based ROMs on z2, though I would describe the sound as more of a clicking.
I wonder if the native USB DAC support in android L will rectify the issue.

Can someone tell me if this problem is solved? or will it work with a fiio e17 without the choppy sound? i would like to use it with spotify

Bluetooth issue - streaming to speaker

I have just bought a bluetooth speaker (JBL Charge) it usually works fine for a little while wioth my S3, then the connection seems to have issues, the music splutters and sometimes slows down or speeds up. I have tried connecting iphones and my nexus 10 which work fine, so I know its not the speakers.
I am using Omega ROM 45 4.2.2 but also on the 4.1.2 firmware it did the same I have done a full wipe etc.
Do you think a kernal change might solve the issue or would it be ROM related or just a dodgy bluetooth chip?
Has anyone else had issues with bluetooth sound peripherals?
Thanks for your help
Is there anyone who has no issues with Bluetooth streaming?

It might be something with ROM. usually kernel dont create problems with that unless you changed settings in kernel for amplifying the sound in bluetooth. or if you are using third party equalizers. try uninstalling third party equalizers first.
I've been streaming music to my JVC RV-NB90B with no problems.

I just got my SBH52 and test on ZU, failed to listen to music and I was thinking about the SBH52 device issue.
then I connected the SBH52 to iphone 5 with iOS7. no problem at all.
I think we need Sony to fix this firmware.

I don't see any problem about the sound quality so far . But look like after update the new version of "Smart Connect" on Google Play, the connection between ZU and SBH-52 with full function such as phone log, messages...that access on SBH-52 does not establish. Then I've removed the update version and it back to normal again!.
My ZU and SBH52 has same problem (cannot access clock, call log, message, listen music and call only), i have uninstall update of Smart Connect then my SBH52 connected normally

I have Sony SBH-50 and two devices Nexus 7 2012 (Android 4.4) and Sony Xperia SP (C5302 Android 4.1)
I have similar sound quality issue with my Nexus 7 device but with Sony Xperia SP I have no issues.
Just in case somebody checked BT sound quality on other devices with Androind 4.3+.
Maybe the issue related to Android's BT enhancmets?
Having similar issues my self there is a crackling when running music tracks and pairing up issues too. This all started after the 4.3 update.
I have unistalled and re installed the app couple times but to no positive results.
for me I hear a very slight hickup about every ten minutes when i stream audio over bluetooth, I did not have this before on 4.1
I did a factory reset when I installed the 4.3 and I dont know why this is happenning when I use my iphone on my car stereo it plays flawless
it seems there are issues with bluetooth in 4.3
aptx
I was on. 290 and didn't had any issue with my sennheiser mm400x which has aptx bluetooth profile. Just to let you know

Xperia Z2 Audio driver issue.

Hi guys. When Z2 was at 4.4, it worked perfectly. But after 5.0 update they broke sound driver. There is two issues - equaliser works only in Sony Walkman, but it doesn't matter in comparison with other one.
Everyone knows about heaphone profiles, right? They are working like they were outjected from ass while ago. I found best profile on my own taste, but it works only at current song, if I select next, it forgets to modify sound. Settings is still keeping setup, but it's dummy. If I reselect profile, it works again. It's annoying. Anyone else got the same issue? It highly affects audio - without profiles it feels like girl with out boobs. And Clear Bass is also does nothing, at least.
My headphones are Sennheiser CX 300 II and Xiaomi Piston III. I was hope that Sony would fix it at 5.1 update, but nothing.
P.S Same feature at Xiaomi Mi Pad and Mi Note works perfectly, but Xperia is main phone.
P.P.S Phone is stock, I have never flashed it and rooted. I have root at Xiaomies.

Bluetooth audio stuttering

Hi everyone,
does anyone else also have problems with bluetooth audio? I'm using my z5c with two different audio devices (car stereo and a jbl bluetooth box) and the audio signal is stuttering quite often. I tried using different apps (so far Audible and Deezer) and with both I get the stuttering. When I disable and enable bluetooth again sometimes it works fine for a while and then it turns bad again. Most of the times the stuttering is back immediately after reconnecting. The same happens after restarting the app. When I'm switching to headphones or the internal speaker I don't have any stuttering at all.
Any ideas on how to fix this? If it stays with Android 6.0 I might have to send the phone in.

Had that happen a few times. Stuttering not related to distance or other apparent reasons. Also phone slows down like crszy sometimes. I think stock rom is plain ****.
Happens very often when using Garmin Fenix 2 with HR monitor in the same time. If the watch is to close to phone then sometimes I hear nothing - but I think it's Garmin's fault.
Doesn't happen at all in my case
I have not noticed any stuttering while connected to the Bluetooth in my car (Acura TSX) or my Homewerks Bluetooth speakers in my house.
This is CONSTANT for me while using a variety of bluetooth headphones/speakers. Usually if I pause the music for a moment, it'll stop doing it for a while. But it's driving me insane today. I do usually have the phone paired with a Moto 360 as well, but I haven't noticed a difference whether it's connected or not.
Strange. I use BT audio all the time with 3 different BT devices, and never experience stuttering. I do use a 3rd party player (GoneMAD Music Player), not sure if that is part of it.
I had this issue constantly with my Z Ultra, had no issue with my Z3 Compact, after ~4 months started having it constantly with my S6 Edge, and I noticed it twice with my Z5 Compact.
I think it's something Android related rather than something Sony-specific (and definitely not phone-specific).
I use it with a wireless Sony loudspeaker. My z3 compact never stuttered. My z5 compact (with the same speaker) does stutter a little, especially if i hold it. If it's on a table it is fine.

I don't experience stuttering at all, but I do however have the problem that the audio is too loud... Even on the lowest setting, audio through bluetooth headphones is almost too loud to listen to
Having connected the Z5 Compact to a Sony SBH-20 Bluetooth headset, I can confirm the stuttering issue. With music coming from Play Music the stutter happens sometimes and will not stop appearing until I stop and start the music. This also happens with navigation voices from Maps app.
Is this a Z5 Compact specific error or Android 5.x? My Motorola Razr i (4.4) never had this issue.

Not sure if this applies to every case, but the stuttering in my case I found out was due to accidentally touching or holding the phone near the fingerprint sensor.
What this generates is a music playback gap (no phone vibration or other sound, which makes hard to understand what is happening). Tested with bluetooth headphones, Sony AS600BT.
I am having all kind of issues using audio on Bluetooth devices... And I have to do the pairing again every time I want to use one of these devices. It never connects automatically. I don't know if the app Throw or Smart connect have something to do with it.
Is this issue commonplace? I regularly use several pairs of Bluetooth headphones to listen to music with my phones. I've never had an issue with any Android devices stuttering over Bluetooth (Not since the Droid X2, anyways.), so I'm concerned by this. I had a Lumia 950 XL that had the issue, but a replacement seemed to solve that.
Just wondering, as I'm expecting my Z5c to be delivered Monday. Sorry for the necro!
I have the same issue with my Sony Z5 Compact, Audio through Bluetooth was working perfectly fine before Android 6.0 Software update, since the update the audio is very choppy/stuttering quite badly, even if the bluetooth earphones/reciever (Sony SBH20) is sat untop of the phone, I have tried different recievers/earphones, tried turning all apps off, turning wifi off, switching bluetooth on/off etc tried different music apps... tried most things, it happens at home/office and happens outside too, so my guess it's a Sony Bluetooth issue that has been effected by the Android Update.
Stuttering/chopping badly here as well... Using BT to a 2016 Volvo. Especially if the phone is used at the same time, no matter the load.
Had no problem before Marshmallow.
it's interesting... the last 5.x update solved the problem on my phone and the marshmallow update didn't change the fact... have you tried to reflash the firmware?
Found a possible solution which at least works temporarily in my case. Stuttering didn't happen since I performed the following:

Hi everyone,
I resolved Bluetooth audio stuttering on my Z5 Compact by wiping the cache partition.
This can be done the following way:
1. Go to Home screen
2. Press and hold both keys 5 seconds : Power + Volume Up
3. The smartphone should vibrate 3 times when done, and shutdown
4. Power on
The issue should be fixed.
This works on my Z5 Compact, I hope this can help you too.

Problem with bluetooth audio

First of all, hello!
Ok, so I've been having this problem with the phone since I received it: When I want to transfer the audio of the phone to an LG Home Cinema via Bluetooth, the audio doesn't sound properly (sometimes nothing comes out of the speakers and sometimes half of a second of the song plays but very distorted, but in the phone it is displayed that the song is playing). I tried to pair the audio of the phone with a mini speaker that also supports Bluetooth and the Redmi Note 2 works just fine with it.
I've changed the rom several times since I bought the phone (MIUI always, I'm currently on 7.1.0 Stable) but the issue is still there.
My previous phone, a Mi3, worked well with the Home Cinema and also every other phone that I link to the speakers also work well so it's definitely a problem with the Redmi Note 2 and this LG Home Cinema in particular.
Any suggestions or thoughts on this?
Thank you!
I am having the same issue with bluetooth headphones...audio stuttering is horrible + some peak distortion...I`ve tried anything (change build.prop, disable wifi, disable bluetooth log) but no change.
The headphones are not defective as they work properly with PC or other device with android 4.2.2.
Same here. Annoying stuttering in bluetooth headset.
I'm using weekly dev builds from xiaomi.eu
No problems here with the global developer version. Works like a charm with Bose Soundlink Mini and Creative T12 Wireless.

Does work fine with miui though... BUT.
For me so far, bluetooth audio stutters very rarely, but it does stutter now and then. No distortion, however.
Currently on xiaomi.eu v6.2.25 about to move on to v6.3.24 beta
