[Q] Bummed... trying to save data :/ - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hello all, new to the forum but a long time reader. You guys have helped me many times in the past, and I am very grateful. This time however, I'm pretty sure I'm SOL.
So, my last droid razr's LCD cracked about 2 weeks ago. The phone was old, as I had purchased it when they first came out. I was running Jelly Bean and wasn't rooted, but had some how kept my free hotspot from my previous ICS root. The battery was on its last leg, and the thing would go in and out of HDMI mode. I would give it a good smack (lol) and it would straighten out. Well.... I smacked it a little too hard one day. LCD cracked under glass, and I couldn't see anything.
I purchased another LCD and did the swap, but now its boot looped and wont come out. When I hold down all the keys and try to boot in recovery, I get the little icon with the droid guy laying down and an exclamation point.
Does this mean I'm totally screwed? I'm you've all heard it a million times... Ive got a ton of data on there (vids and pics) that were stored internally that mean a lot to me. I sure would like to be able to recover this data somehow. Ive read of doing factory resets and all of that, but wouldnt that wipe my pics/vids? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
-Kenny
***Update: Not sure if this helps, but my battery is done and wouldnt even hold enough charge to power the phone. Just to let you guys know I am running the phone off a variable power supply (3.8 volts) like the battery would. I just decided to plug the factory USB in to my PC and see if I could access the internal memory even though its looping... it installs moto-cast, but wont come up as a storage device so I can access those files. I'm screwed, aren't I...

Only seeing motocast probably means your drivers are not set up right. I helped my friend fix his xt912 last week and it took 30 minutes to fix his phone not counting the 2 hours+ it took to get the internal storage to show up as mtp or mass storage. Motocast was all I could see before I found the right driver. I can look for the link to the drivers when I get home later if you need it.

THANK you so much for your reply. I'll take any advice I can get! I'd love to hear your procedures and will attempt to load any drivers you believe are necessary.

Was away from forum for most of the past couple of days. This thread has a link to drivers and fastboot tools, etc.
CAUTION WARNING: user below reported that the link at this thread results in viruses: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1539192
I used Motorola Device Manager and it worked for me.
Good luck with it.

Last time I needed to unbrick a Droid RAZR it was the XT912 and I used the MotorolaDeviceManager_2.4.5.exe for drivers and I downloaded that directly from Motorola. I also used mattlgroff's utility belt ("batman") tool set and it had RSD_lite included in it.

USB Mode for Rooting ( Charge ONLY )

To root phone must be in Charge Only mode under USB Connection. If it is still in Motorola Phone Portal you will not be able to root. It took me a couple of Hours to figure this out. And im sure some people who are new to rooting or new to rooting Motorola Android Devices will have the same problem.
Yea umm...are you releasing something? Or just being informative?! Lollololololo..I believe this would be posted in the general section?

This is helpful, but the issue i was having is that i couldn't get the damn phone out of Phone Portal. I'd hit Charge Only and within in seconds phone portal starts up and i get the connected and i'd recieve an ip address notification on the phone.
I did some reading and saw that it is in the drivers i installed on the computer (64bit), and i was told to uninstall and reinstall and it would work. Well, reinstalling didn't rid the issue and i think it may be due to the 64 bit drivers.
anyways, i eventually got rooted the other day and so far so good running Alien. I was having a noob moment when i was trying to run fastboot commands while the phone was in the OS and not fastboot... almost pulled my hair out, and then i had one of those "what the f*** was i thinking" moments. I tend to forget little things after a few beers, thank god i'm not a vodka drinker, i'd have a mopho-ing brick

Selling my Droid Razr - Bricked/won't charge

Hey,
I didn't feel like going through the trouble of buying the Motorola factory charger or whatever you need to charge the phone when it said *battery low* *cannot program* when trying to use the RSD program (might have spelled it wrong) to restore to factory settings. My battery must have been low and in the middle of the restore, it stopped and now Im unable to get to either recovery or charge it.
I had insurance luckily so I just got my galaxy nexus back and should be to me tomorrow. Do yall think someone will buy this phone like that? i have 2 nandroid backups on there so it's probably not safe to sale with that stuff accessible.. smh.. that's why i liked the samsung galaxy s and galaxy s 2 devices because you can use Odin which makes the phones virtually unbrickable. The phone's in PERFECT condition. Would be nice if there was a way around that man
how much? just curiosity...
That's why its always recommened to have full charge when rooting or installing custom rom. I hope someone here in the forum can help you solve this issue.
you can make one looks like here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403100
if you want to give it a go, will cost you a $3 cable if you mess it up, and will gain you a $300 phone if you do it right.

Yeah but you know when you're a frequent flasher and are sure it only takes about 10 percent batter at the most, you don't charge it to the max but I just made a boo boo by not reading the part that said *You must be running a the rom already before flashing the update portion*.. that caused the bootloop..
Thanks a lot though. You're right

Get phone in to ap fastboot and go down to bp tools and then press vol+.
Phone should reboot in to a sort of recovered state (last firmware that was on phone) and allow you to charge up.
Once 100% retry flashing.
I screwed my phone several times already and thought I wouldnt recover. Through some chat help have always recovered. Same for my Charge after a few times you figure out all the tricks.
You can recover it. I've done it twice
If you check out my post it shows you a alternative and easier way charge your phone again and make it back to stock rom and no root. Then you can sell your phone for a better price or just keep it!
Ill give you $150 for it...
Ill trade you a Samsung Charge for it. Seriously though you should be able to recover.

I get that on mine when I let it die completely (after cocking up flashing!) ... what I do is connect it to pc...get solid white light..... press up/down/power.....boots to the other screen (cant remember what its called).....gives the option for normal boot......press up to get into normal moto boot logo..... VERY QUICKLY replug to a desktop charger.... Seems to work for me! I really must try reflashing with a clean rom!
There are several ways to recover from bricked because of dead low battery. Im sure there are easier but Im just gonna post a few.

Stuck in RSD, after failed OTA, sprint dealer can't fix it

Hi Everyone,
This is my wife's phone, so i'm not very familar with it. She handed it to me today saying to won't boot. If connected to a charger, the screen would come on saying "RDS protocol starting..." and "Battery too low to flash".
After doing a little research her, I asked her if it had asked to do an update. She said yes, but that she's been hitting "no". So i guess it's been asking her for a while. I'm assuming she either hit yes, or it went ahead and did a force install anyway.
I took it to Sprint and they told me there was nothing they could do but replace it, which they have ordered the replacement, but that they cannot recovery anything from the internal memory (pictures, contacts, etc). So all I need to do is get the phone working enough to get data off of it, if at all possible.
The phone has NEVER been rooted. The bootloader is NOT unlocked. She's never let me touch it before.
I have no idea what version it was on (think it was 2.3.4) nor what version the OTA was trying to install.
I recharged the battery a little using a usb cable with the end cutoff and attached the red/black wires to the +/- pins. (about 30 mins or so). The "Battery too low to flash' message is gone and the phone is recognized in RDS Lite (good sign I hope).
Can I just flash "1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-154_5-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US.zip" to it using RDS Lite? Or should I use a later version like 198_7? I downloaded the 154_5 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20331570&postcount=3)
I eagerly await a helping hand.
Thanks,
EB

Thanks.. looking forward to hearing from you. All I really need is to be able to get pictures and contacts off of it.. and perhaps SMS history. I don't care if any of the services work, since Sprint is sending us a replacement phone.

Contacts are synced to googles servers, so that's not a problem. As far as pictures, were they on the sd card or internal phone storage? If on sdcard, just put the card in a card reader on a laptop or pc. Or you may be able to install bootstrap recovery and mount either internal or sdcard. Or, if you were on 2.3.4, flashing any of those sbfs will work.
You can block the update by changing a line in the buildprop. But that would require being rooted. Id sbf then do the update immediately after since she obviously doesn't care about root or unlock.
Thanks.. I'm sure the pictures are on the internal sdcard. It's the pictures taken by the camera over the past few months. I already have older ones copied to my PC.
peetr_ sent me a custom sbf for an unlocked bootloader + twrp. I'll try that when I get home to see if i can get into that way. (Thanks peetr_)
I'll keep everyone posted.
What line in the build.prop file do I change?

Can't remember ill try to find out for ya.
HUGE thanks to peetr_ for all the help he gave me. I managed to get it booted into Electrify and saved everything I needed. *whew*
I now believe the whole issue was not a failed update, but a sticky volume button that's causing it to go to RSD mode. Whenever I power it down, then backup, it always goes direct to RSD mode. But then I can pull the battery, put it back in.. then hit the non-volume side of the phone against the heel of my hand (fairly hard) 5 or 6 times, then power it on, and it boots normally. Then while it's running, I'll see the volumne adjust up and down randomly.
Then if i reboot it, it's back to the RSD mode.
It doesn't work every time, but I've managed to boot it several times like that.

[Q] Phone won't boot, enter Recovery Mode, nor connect to PC - what do?

I followed a root-guide a couple of weeks ago and my phone worked perfectly.
I have no memory of what ROM I used, nor do I remember if I flashed a Kernel or not. I'm pretty new at this.
Now, today, my phone sent a notification that a new firmware update was available. Stupid as I am I just press "install" right away. Not much later my phone tried to reboot and suddenly was stuck at the Samsung logo screen. I tried pulling out the battery to reboot and it still wouldn't work. If I connected it to my PC it shows a battery but the spinning arrow-thingy is frozen.
After searching these forums and other places I found several guides on how to fix stuff like this, by either flashing with a new kernel - or rom or w/e I don't know - or going into recovery mode and do something funky. The problem is that I can't reach recovery mode at all, and when I enter download mode it's just frozen at "Downloading..." and I can't get it to connect to my PC at all (tried both with and without Kies). In Odin the ID:COM cells won't update when I connect my phone.
Do you guys have any idea how to resolve this? Do I have to take it to a service centre?
Edit: The phone is out of battery, suddenly, apparently, so I tried to charge it, but that doesn't work either. What the **** has happened to my phone? Please help if you can!

*shameful bump*
As I have no chance of replacing this phone (because I'm pretty much broke) I really need to fix this on my own if I can. Last resort is borrowing money to send it to service.
If you have any suggestions or theories PLEASE reply ASAP. I will truly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance
So Atm what does your phone do? Can you get to download mode? Vol-home and power does it go into that?
Buy a new motherboard. And with your memory, why not borrow the money lol.
-------------------------------------------
maybe your an iphone expert
------------------------------------------
I also stupidly pressed one of those "install update" stuff. Then i had the same symptoms until i removed the battery, then it wouldn't turn on - so i suspected hardbrick.
Lucky enough my warranty still had a month letf and they apparently didn't notice that i had rooted my device and thus vioded my warranty.
Are you sure all Kies' background tasks were closed?
Do you have access to a JIG?
There's anotehr way to get into download mode (other than vol down+power+home) i'll see if i can find it.
If it hardbricks maybe you also can make up a story and give it to them? (just a suggestion, nothing i can say but just mentioning since it worked for me)

Yep, I even tried with a 100% uninstall and removal of it; still didn't work. No I do not, but I've considered buying one on ebay - they're like $1 with free shipping from China.

It has most definitely hardbricked. I've considered this: Go down there, act dumb, say after installing the firmware update my phone wouldn't boot and a yellow triangle suddenly appeared out of nowhere, or something like that.
I've only had this phone for half a year so I really wanna fix this if possible!
Thanks a lot for the feedback - please reply with more if you've got some suggestions/recommendations/tips/solutions!

Of course this is a drivers thing, you need your pc to see the device.

Oh so you don't think I've googled for hours to find solutions for this problem? Think again. Every "solution" i read is either take out the battery, enter recovery mode or use an USB jig. 2 of them don't work and the third is at the moment not possible as I don't have a jig.
No need to be rude.

Root without pc?

This device is EOL I realize but I would like to root it. Problem is I can't get any pc's to even acknowledge it is plugged in. Can I get this thing rooted again without ADB???
My bootloader is unlocked from when I first got the device.
EDIT: So it was the USB port that was bad. Ordered a daughter board from E-Bay and now I have working ADB. I'm going to leave this thread open in case someone does figure out a way to get root without adb...

If you can't get the drivers set up, try Wug's NRT toolkit. He has a walk-through on setting up/removing/reinstalling drivers. You don't need ADB to root, but you do need to boot into a custom recovery to install a root program (I use SuperSu). You can boot a recovery via CMD from fastboot as long as the recovery is in your adb/fastboot data folder.
FWIW, NRT can do all.

I'm really thinking it is my connector. Sometimes it doesn't even charge. I guess I could try to boot one of my pc's into a live Linux distro. I never had issues when I ran Arch. Actually I could try it on my server. It is an Odroid XU4 though but it runs Arch... Thanks.

Linux doesn't recognize it either. I assume it is the port/cable. The original cable is long gone but I have many brand new Anker and other brands but none work for connecting... Guess I'm screwed. Really wanted root because I'm having issues with battery drain again and the screen not coming on. I wanted to get a custom kernel running... Oh well.
I use off-brand cable exclusively. Have you tried uninstalling all Android USB connections then allowing an auto re-install? I've had to do that with my N9 at times. A few times, the driver showed up in device hardware but nothing further (connection). I right-clicked and updated driver-just went through the process with no new driver just basically re-install. Once, it was the cable but all others worked.

I tried removing everything. It never even acknowledges it is even plugged in. I also tried on 1 brand new Windows system. Same deal. I did a live boot of Linux and nothing. I tried on my Odroid and nothing. I'm not new to this and have many PC's and other devices but none work.
Only thing I noticed is under developer options it comes up as ptp or mtp but if I try changing it I will always say charging no matter what I pick.... So I never even get a USB permission dialog...
As this isn't new territory, you know some cables don't have pin config for data transfer.
Are you able to get recognition of your device with ADB devices command?--recognized but unauthorized?
[C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\sdk\platform-tools>adb devices
List of devices attached
007667324ccb229b unauthorized]

Yup... And I'm doing it again now. This time both in Android then from the bootloader (pwr+dn).
Also apparently when I flash stock back on this a year ago for my son to use I never flashed the recovery image, or not correctly because there is no recovery at all. Just hboot... When I select recovery I get the dead Android..
I altered my previous response. Andy lying on his back is the stock recovery portal. You have to hold power button then push/release vol+. It can be tricky, but pretty sure that's the sequence. I'll flash stock recovery to double check if needed.

Doh! I'm so spoiled with rooted devices and twrp I forget you have to jump through hoops to get into some recoveries... So, I did the Android reset, Hboot reset and stock recovery hard reset. And no changes. Still only charges. Oh, well. Thanks again.
Quick update... Ordered a usb daughter board from e-bay. Last $10 I'll spend on this device...

My USB started acting up on mine too. Watching a movie with a USB otg and it just stopped. I then discovered the only way for it to work was to jiggle it then hold it in a certain angle. I'm guessing something is loose. I haven't opened her up yet. I'd like to grab a new USB port for mine. Is it soldered to the daughterboard? Seems like changing the daughterboard will be easier.

A few screws... I had to fix my camera because I pulled the back off wrong trying to disconnect the battery a while ago. Just gotta be careful. When the part comes in I'll update.

I looked it up and saw it. I noticed the rear camera was attached. Thanks for the info. I changed the screen on my n7 2013, but never thought to change the port on this one. D'oh.
@madbat99 @ritchea
Got the daughter board from China. About 25 minutes to install (I'm getting real good at taking this device apart now...lol). Powered up and connected to my Windows machine. And... It is recognized now! Can't believe I fought so long thinking it was a driver/windows issue.
After taking it out I can see why it would wear out/break. Cheap plastic and it has such a large opening on the outside my son probably tried all the time to plug it in wrong...
@ritchea thanks for your help!
@andyroidking,
I did nothing but super glad you were able to fix it!...and share it with the community.

I ordered one from the link you provided. Coming from China so I hope it doesn't take too long. Can't wait. The port is waaaay to big, too much room to jiggle around. Hope this fixed my problem too.
