backup and root - AT&T HTC One (M8)

I have a htc m8 on at&t. I've been thinking of rooting my phone. I do have a warranty on the phone and I don't wanna void that. Is there a guide on here (for super NOOBS like myself) on how to create a back up and how to root?

Indeed there is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618
but if you really dont feel comfortable with doing this stuff, by all means don't. Some things (S-off for instance, which is required to flash upgraded firmwares not specific to your carrier branded device) have a high potential to turn your new toy into a paperweight if done incorrectly. Just read up, follow the instructions to the letter, and come back here with questions. Most of the time someone will be nice enough to assist you

I do wanna root just so I can get rid of this app that's keeping my phone awake. I've read about the sunshine root. Some of the stuff I read is a bit confusing. On the website it says that the update won't require towelroot (is that the right term?) for me to be able to use sunshine. But in here it says that I need to root my device before using it.

I personally nothing about Sunshine. I unlocked my bootloader with the HTCDev site when I got the phone (was shipped to me since AT&T couldnt sell it in the brick and mortar stores for the first month or something like that)

You need to slow down, as it seems that you are rushing ahead with very little understanding of what you are doing. I recommend any newcomer (even experienced HTC users) to this phone spend at least a couple hours reading and learning before doing any mods to the phone. If a total n00b to Android, root, etc. then more time should be taken to research and learn. Reading includes the sticky threads, basic guides, and also my Index thread has a lot of information organized: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
Sunshine is an s-off method, not root.
If you unlocked the bootloader, all you need to root is flash SU/SuperSU or a rooted ROM. S-off is not required for root.
Backing up the stock ROM, recovery, etc. is not required for the AT&T version, as you can RUU back to stock.
Also, AT&T (directly through them, not HTC) will only void your warranty for physical or water damage; not for mods.

I read some more and I rooted my phone already. Thanks for the link

Redpoint is 100% correct. If this all seems foreign to you, or anyone else for that matter, research, research then research some more! Before I do ANYTHING that I haven't done in the past (hell I have flashed many firmwares and it STILL scares me), I do alot of reading and see if its something I really want to do, plus it will help prevent me from coming back and saying "Halp, my phone is a brick now!". Once I have a basic understanding to it, then I go on

That's why I decided to root my phone because I've read enough to know the basics and I was successful. I'm reading on flashing custom Roms now and it seems fairly easy but I won't just flash a ROM without reading more about it. Thanks for the replies.

Personally I use ARHD 10.2, Its as close to stock as any other, but I have been using Mikes roms since my M7. In order to use it without any of the annoying boot bugs etc, you will have to flash a new firmware but that is one I would recommend, but also read up on firmware flashing and the steps to do it properly

dunno if its just EURO, but since ATT lags behind in updates, and Mike keeps his updated with whatever releases are out, its my preferred one to use
I like how all the bloat is removed, regardless if its a WWE or US based rom

There is a debloated ATT 4.4.3 build thats tailored to AT&T already in the AT&T section. International section is not only place ROMS are released these days...

[Q] Updating a Videotron Amaze 4G to ICS without S:Off

Hey, Seems like Videotron is lazy when it comes to updating their user to the latest OS.
My friend has this phone and since I know a lot when it comes to do simple things like flashing roms and kernel, he wanted me to help him to update his phone. Thing is, I can't get, for the love of Morgan Freeman (AKA god), to S-Off his Amaze 4G. So I'll try the alternative since he doesn't need anything fancy other than the regular stuff.
I know that I can flash manually the OTA for carriers that has it but I don't know if I should try a Telus, T-Mobile rom and so on.
So what can I do about that?
And something else too, the last time I updated from OTA, it was when I received my Nexus S so I don't know if it factory resets and I need to create some backup in case.
You will HAVE to s-off if you want to update via another carriers ICS rom file, it's not possible with s-on, check the pin hole on his amaze, you may have to take a sharp pin and dig inside of it a bit, there seems to be a plastic covering it at times. Try s-off again after that, use a a paper clip with some tape insulating it, it works really great compared to wires. S-offed an evo 3d on the very first try today using one.
Okay, cool. Thanks for tips I will try it out.

This part is still unanswered and as I am in the same situation I ask the same question
I don't think the phone carrier matters once s-off since we usually don't flash the radio but especially for OTA upgrades maybe you have to be superCID and/or use a carrier that uses the same frequencies, 1700/2100 in Videotron's case?
Are there any other crucial differences than the radio between one carrier and another? Do we absolutely need to go by the OTA of another carrier to get to ICS or is there a way to flash any ICS based ROM and fix it manually after? I searched that but I can't even find the question asked... If we can't, then why? What are the modified parts from stock GB to stock ICS on the same carrier?
Maybe should I start a new question thread... Does xda uses that one question per thread rule? Don't remember to have seen it in the rules.
Thanks in advance!

All amaze devices basically have the same band, all the carriers we have here use the same band, so the choice of software is upto you since they basically have the same options, the only exception being T-Mobile, they are the only carrier that add in their own apps and modify a few things about the firmware and thanks to the htc/apple issue they changed the app association as well, so if you want the pure software with everything stock HTC the way it would be on an international version, then the Telus option would be best for you.
Good for the carrier specific software. Or in this case the absence of specificity
One detail is that Videotron installs a single app it's called "Portail Videotron" for renting and stream movies over the 4G network, a good way to have users using an enormous amount of data. But as long as the radio that comes with the Telus ROM is the same this app wich I don't even use I really don't care.
Will start a new thread for the other questions. Or won't if you think it won't be useful.

Ok so my questions are basically already in my first post. It is not that I don't understand the procedure to upgrade to ICS by dl the OTA, rename it to PH85IMG.zip and let hboot do the rest, it is just that I would like to be free to go back and forth between GB and ICS as I have always did with other phones. I can't see wich part of the system can be modified only by the OTA and not manually.
Edit: one may find it useless, it is just that I dislike much to be dependent on the OTA's

Due to signatures and encryption and in the cases of the things we just don't wanna touch like the radio, it's risky to mess with things like the radio and since we don't have a PH85IMG for every carrier like we do for tmobile we have to depend on the OTA files, in order for you to switch between GB and ICS as you wish you will have to s-off, that's the only way. Once you're s-off and super cid, you can upgrade, downgrade, swap hboots, swap roms, try out other carrier roms, all without restrictions.
Ok I tried to flash ICS EnergyRom with s-off, now that I am supercid I try once again.

Make sure you update your device to ICS first before you flash a custom rom, certain background files like radio, hboot etc have to be the ICS version for it to work.
That is what I don't like... But just to make it clear, with ICS version of hboot radio etc both GB and ICS are supported while with GB version ICS is not?
For now I feel a bit lazy so I will use the usual way and will look back at this at some moment.
Thanks

The Videotron RUU is supposed to work. You have to be in the bootloader wich you can access by removing your battery and then vol-down + power, relocked (not in recovery). I don't know if it has to be stock CID, don't think so.

[Q] Rooting and making backup

Hi there,
I've been using symbian for 2 years, did flashing and custom CFW and so on... Not a newbie in this. Actually just finished university in Europe and got a degree of Computer engineer and programmer.
Last week I bought an HTC Evo 3D, rly happy about it just want to use it to the max.
I want to root it for some games and apps but know know how and what ROM and ware to get it.
I have a 2 year warranty and I don't want to lose it.
I need information on rooting. How to backup stock ROM so I can restore it to keep my warranty just in case something happens. Which ROM to choose for my needs and how to do it.
Any other knowledgeable info would be great.
Spill me everything you know about this phone and for this phone.
Thank you for your time
NOTE: I live in Lithuania WiFi is not widely spread and free. 3G net is not an option, too expensive.
I use USB net on phone and sometimes WiFi at coffee shops or work.
We use SIM cards I think its GSM type not rly sure never cared.

Are you checking the stickies? The guides are all in there. Unless you tell us your hboot version, we can't provide you a link to a guide for that.
Stock roms are in the GSM Dev section.
Read few of them, still kinda afraid to brick my phone.
Where I live there is no sprint or other services like in htcdev.com so not sure what to pick.

HOX+ Boot Loop

Hi All,
I've tried searching but to no avail. I got an HOX+ from ATT today and was excited to root it I got through rooting it no problem. But then I installed ClockworkMod Recovery. Now the phone wont boot at all. I can get in to fast boot and recovery. But it says no SD Card exists when I try to access the SD card. Other then that I get nothing but the HTC Logo. If anyone could help it would be great! At this point I wouldn't mind going back to stock.
More than likely you flashed a non-ATT recovery since there is not one out now for ATT. I did the same and swapped out this afternoon rather than wait for a HTC release.

Ok but that doesn't explain how you rooted with no custom recovery for AT&T available, in other words how did you flash SU zip? I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants to know the answer to this question I'd be greatly appreciative to know how it was done so I can root the stock and be done with it for while until the kinks get worked out. **** I seen they started a thread to donate for a Dev to get the international HOX+ why was'nt an AT&T donate thread started so we can buy a dev one too? Ok but that doesn't explain how you rooted with no custom recovery for AT&T available, in other words how did you flash SU zip? I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants to know the answer to this question I'd be greatly appreciative to know how it was done so I can root the stock and be done with it for while until the kinks get worked out. **** I seen they started a thread to donate for a Dev to get the international HOX+ why was'nt an AT&T donate thread started so we can buy a dev one too? I'll chip in and I'm sure many others will too.

All I did was unlock the phone. Not sure of I got root or what. I just followed the instructions in the all in one. Phone asked me if I really wanted to unlock it I said yes. Then I tired flashing Clockwork. Based on all the reading I've done I'm almost positive I didn't root it. Just screwed my phone up. Going to have to go to ATT tomm and see what can be done.

He means he took it to AT&T and said it died on him so they gave him a new one. I did the same thing. As of right now, there is no RUU (ROM Update Utility) provided by AT&T. I emailed HTC and they said that they no-longer choose when that gets uploaded and it usually takes about 10 days for the approval process and upload of the RUU. It's up to AT&T so you could be waiting a while for it.

He never got that far. He flashed recovery and the phone never booted up because it can't mount the filesystem. Same issue as everyone else with an AT&T HOX+

You don't need to donate a AT&T one x. The devices are really not that different. Lloir with the one x we donated will be able to do everything he does for us for you at&t boys. If anything you guys should be grateful we donated one so you don't have to. Back on topic, you don't need a RUU, just the stock AT&T boot.img. Flash that and device will boot again.

Oh I'm not ungrateful at all I just wish a dev had an AT&T HOX+ because it would be easier to figure out a way to get the SU binaries on the phone to gain root, just wishful thinking i guess.

AFAIK Lloir has nearly finished your recovery. It's just because you guys have a different kernel to us.

I'm running a version of CWM that he provided on my One X+ right now, but unfortunately it's useless at the moment since it can't mount /sdcard/... But it doesn't bork the phone either.

[Q] Flashing International ROMs.

Is it safe to use anything from the international forum to flash on my AT&T M8? Are there any limitations as to what is safe and what is not, or is everything in there safe for use on my model. Coming from the GS3, flashing anything that was not device specific was a nono, so I just want to make sure it is ok. Thanks!

Yes and no. If it's a sense based Rom you should be okay. There is bootloop issues with some roms , this is due to recovery issues and other things. Just don't flash anything that has a radio. Always make a backup and keep a copy on your PC just to be safe.
I'm running insert coin from the international section with no issues.

Thanks for the reply! So if I understand correctly, ROMs = ok; radios = not ok. What about recoveries, and RUUs? I know we don't have RUUs yet, but just curious.

Roms , no harm to try them if you are comfortable with adb, fastboot etc etc. I don't think the RUU is available yet. If you are familiar with Samsung then your probably also familiar with Odin. A RUU comes in a exe package now that is executed from your PC and restores everything back to its original state, well most of the time lol. Just make sure your unlocked and have the latest recovery installed , with that said trial and error is pretty safe if you no how to get yourself out of a sticky situation, not to say you are.

Thanks again, I appreciate all the info. I'm comfortable with adb and all that comes with trial and error. I just wanted to make sure that it was ok to mix and match some of the stuff from the international version. The last thing I want is a brand new brick. Like I said, sammy got me a little nervous about mixing and matching. Back on the Inspire 4G I used to use alot of things from the Desire HD forum. I guess I was just looking for confirmation that the same thing was possible with the M8's.
Also never flash a OTA or any new leak till you see it posted on XDA . You never no with ATT, they can push a OTA, that locks us back down .
This is all common sense. However,my father always used to tell me "common sense ain't common" ;-p I'm not calling you dumb I'm just adding this for anyone that may stumble on this thread. If you have anymore questions ,drop me a PM.

Yeah. I went ahead and unlocked with no intention of updating until we (hopefully) receive s-off. On my S3 they pulled a fast one with the 4.3 ota, witch I never did, or will, accept.
Edit: I always like to say "Nowadays common sense is a effin super power".

[Q] Updating the M8 to 4.4.4?

I have an M8 from AT&T, unlocked bootloader, rooted, and S-Off. Phone is running 4.4.3... the 2.23 sense, I got the update right before they pulled it. I want to go to newer roms, but they all use the 3.28 update, and AT&T hasn't gotten the update yet, but i'm having some major withdraws. I was just asking how to I go about updating? I saw a few posts but I am beyond confused.

Here I go again with an alternative that may be easier.
Being S-OFF is a plus but no mention of Supercid.
Below is super simple and requires the use of your external sdcard

If someone can't handle fastboot commands, they should be flashing firmware at all.
It should be understood that flashing firmware is one of the riskier mods to do; and not to be taken lightly. Unlike flashing a ROM, root, etc., you can actually brick the phone flashing firmware, if you don't fully understand what you are doing.
@redpoint73
No need to quote me as I've agreed with you over and over about this very subject in multiple threads my friend. I can remember being new to all this and how intimidating anything to do with adb/fastboot or even the word commands would make me feel.we seem to end up following each other around quit a bit so let's not make it personal man as it do respect you.

The easiest way to upgrade the firmware is to get supercid and run the 3.28.1540.5 dev ed RUU. Worked like a charm for my AT&T m8
Supercid is not needed, BS_US001 or BS_US002 works fine

Supercid will work for all cids. It's easier, Bc then you don't have to worry about changing it all the time to do different things. As wonders_never_cease mentioned, it's not necessary, however.
@mattprice86
Thank you for the answer ,I don't recall it mentioned that Supercid would work.
I figure why change it to a specific Cid if I can change it once

I am free to respond or quote others if I choose to (as are you). I was just raising a point, that IMO firmware (as I already explicitly mentioned) is not something to be taken lightly, and not something that should be made "easier". But just my opinion (and no more or less valid an opinion than yours).
There is nothing "personal" in my post directed toward you. Not a single thing that could be construed as a personal attack, insult, disrespectful, etc. If you took it that way, its your own interpretation.
There aren't all that many folks in the AT&T specific forum section willing to contribute help on a consistent basis, as you likely already noticed. The fact that I have responded to you on multiple occasions is merely a matter if that circumstance (just coincidence, really). Believe it or not, I'm not stalking you or anything. I would have responded/quoted you the same way regardless of whether I recognized your nickname or not.
Your contribution is certainly appreciated. I was just throwing in my 2 cents.
