Hi, I've had the M8 for 4 months now and can't help but notice how buttery smooth it is on reports from other people, but mine is just plagued with performance issues. I don't have any CPU intensive apps running in the background or anything and sometimes when I try to turn the screen on, it vibrates as if it turned on but nothing, this can go on for 30 secs or more until it finally turns on.
Another example is app switching. I can be on SMS app and switching to chrome can just freeze my phone for upwards of 15 seconds, pressing lock button doesn't work either when it's frozen like this, and if it does work, then the above happens.
This happens everyday, no matter what I'm doing. I have even tried setting High Performance in developer options, but the only change it does is use more battery.
Also, I noticed that opening the Camera app takes time as well, so it's impossible to capture those one of a kind moments because I have to wait 10+ seconds for the camera app to be useful.
I have 10+GB of free space.
Is the phone stock, not modded, rooted, bootloader unlocked, etc.?
Something is definitely not right. Have you tried to backup your personal data, and doing a factory reset?
Or see if the problem persists in safe mode? To boot in safe mode, reboot, and while the white boot screen is showing, hold down the vol down rocker until the phone shows the home or lock screen with SAFE MODE i the lower left corner. This will boot the phone with no 3rd party apps, so you can't try to reproduce the Chrome issue you mentioned. But you can at least check the screen-on issue. If the phone seems okay in safe mode, you may have a 3rd party app that is causing issues.
Either you have some sort of software or hardware issue, cause the issue you mentioned are certainly not normal for this phone.
+1 to above.
What launcher are you using?
The phone is completely stock. I haven't tried the factory reset or safe mode. What main items do I need to backup before a factory reset?

What "state" is your phone in:
Pure unrooted stock?
Rooted?
Custom recovery?
S-off or s-on?
Pure unrooted stock straight from the AT&T store.

Depends on what you want to keep, and where its stored. If its going to freak you out to loose it, then back it up.
Photos and videos you took are a must. Either move them to the SD (if not already) or backup on computer. And if on SD, I'd still back them up on your computer or to the cloud, anyway (just in case).
Similarly, any documents or other items that are not easily replaceable. The internal storage (virtual SD) should survive a factory reset. But if its important, I'd back it up on your computer anyway.
If you keep your contacts on Gmail (which I recommend) then that is already saved to the cloud (will auto sync back to the phone after you factory reset). If you have contacts, email, etc. that is not on Gmail, you might want to back those up. Its really up to you.
If you have a lot of app data and other stuff you want to keep, you can try Helium: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup

I would definitely try a factory reset first, as that is probably the first thing they will do at the store if you take it there, anyway.
But if factory reset doesn't work, it may be a hardware issue and a warranty replacement if recommended. But since its 4 months old, OP can't take it back to the store. OP has to go through warranty exchange by mail, or to a Device Support Center (if one is nearby). You can only do exchanges in-store within the first 14 days.
Has this happend since day one? I agree, you either have an app that's acting crazy or an actual HW issue. I'd try the factory reset.
BTW - Where are the developer options on the United Stated AT&T variant? I have not found them.
I tried the factory reset and it's working fine for now. I'm going to be selectively installing back the apps as I need them so I don't end up with a rogue app again.
The only things I had changed were the runtime from Dalvik to ART. I also had only 1 app running in the background (CleanMaster) and was using Sense 6.0 launcher or Nova.
I'm going to keep it in Dalvik and not install that app and see how it goes.
Thanks for your responses.
PS: theandies, to unlock the developer options go to About -> Software Information -> More -> and click about 7 times on the build number.

I had the same issue. Once I switch back to DALVIK from ART my issues were corrected.

This is the only way I can describe it. I am on stock, no mods yet. It first started like it was having a seizure when I was setting a wallpaper. Live wallpaper settings started to blink so fast, that you couldn't X out, or choose anything. I shut down and restarted, and it did the same thing 3 times before I was able to change the live wallpaper. It also did it when setting static wallpaper- it was blinking so fast I couldn't get out of it and I pulled the battery. Did the same with google music and the heart rate app. Pulled the battery and restarted.
Anyone else having these issues on total stock?
I'm wondering if I need to swap it out?
That sounds really messed up...I would get that exchanged..

I would do a master reset and I bet it fixes your issues. The first thing I do when I get a new phone is a hard reset.

Sometimes if you power it off & then turn it back on holding both the volume down button & power button at the same time will get things working right. It's basically a soft reset.

Thank you for this info. I'll try this first.
What is the difference between this soft reset and the hard reset?
Is pulling the battery while the device is still powered on the same as the vol down and power option to power up? Does it do the same thing as a soft reset?
Thank you both very much for your answers. Hope it fixes it. I really don't want to have to swap out.
factory reset=hard reset. A total phone wipe. That I understand!!! That's as last resort. A soft reset just clears out the memory. I like that better!!
Sad to report a soft rest did not fix the problem. Google music settings went haywire again. I just did a hard reset- phone wipe via privacy, reset all data. The only thing I have checked is live wallpapers and google music. Seems OK. Now to set up all over again. Boy do I miss titanium BU!

Glad you were able to get it fixed.
Speaking of Google Music. I hate how it has the tablet interface and not the phone interface. Hopefully that gets fixed soon.
Vlingo is Pre-installed
I don't know if this had anything to do with my instability- but when I reset, and started to reset up my settings, came across the voice input and output settings- voice recognition powered by VLINGO. All the settings were the exact same Vlingo settings. I did not know vlingo was a systems install, and I installed Vlingo via market. They might have been fighting each other and causing my instability. Just my theory.
So to anybody reading, do not install vlingo- it's already on the Note via Samsung systems.
And thank you for all your suggestions.

I was having similar issues. The screen would randomly refresh, then some of my icons that I'd moved partially to SD would be missing altogether. @[email protected] Anyhow, I hard reset, and so far everything works 100x better. Will keep that in mind for future phones, I guess, as a preemptive measure to standard out-of-the-box loads. Thanks for the info, everyone. =D
I received a message about a software update this morning. Foolishly, I downloaded the update without thinking. It's not that I was going to root or anything, I'm content at the moment.
When I tried using the dedicated camera button, it wouldn't work. Then an error report notification came up and I sent the error report. The camera button works sometimes. When I was taking pictures, I tried the rapid-fire picture taking and it didn't work and also gave me an error report, which I sent. The rapid-fire now works sometimes too. I'm not sure what's happening.
It seems like they changed Task Manager too. Now it shows Available and Total. Did it used to show Used and Available? I can't remember. The items listed are now in bold. If I end all the tasks, I usually get to around 400 MB available out of 1024 MB it says. What could be using up all this memory?
Have you guys run into anything with the update? I just wanted to have a discussion about it.
You may need to factory reset. If there were any glitches in the download, it will screw up your phone, like your camera, but a factory reset should fix it. I did the update last week then factory reset. My camera is functioning properly. I cannot speak on the task mgr as I don't really use it.

It will not delete pics in your gallery if they are saved on your SD card. I recommended My Backup Pro to save your apps. 3rd party messaging apps often have back up and restore functions or you can use SMS Backup to back texts up to your email.

I don't use Google Wallet, but I cleared all data from Settings.
I think I'm going to back up everything to a microSD card and whatever apps and then reset. I'll see if it fixes things for me. Is there anything else I should be aware of? Maybe I'll root after resetting. I'll look into that.
Regawmod has finally been updated and makes it all easier. I would still recommend unlocking the manual way because it requires extra steps that makes things a little easier to understand. Some people are getting stuck in loops and the only way to fix is to fastboot but since regawmod handles everything they don't have the adb tools package or how to use it
Did the factory reset fix your camera button issue?
I ordered a micro SD card and I'll backup my stuff when I get it. Everything is fine atm.

Hi,
I had not rooted or unlocked my phone. I decided to do it but that was after I took the update . Well I found out I cannot get s-off now. I was able to unlock and root with Regawmod. I had to manually put it into recovery a few times but it works great.
Okay, so I have restored all my apps, data, and text messages after the factory reset. It seems that Sense doesn't like remembering my Home settings. MyBackup Pro didn't backup Android Home perfectly so I redid my Home screen. I have apps arranged into groups and I removed all the other panels so that I only have one panel. When I restarted my phone, the other panels were still there and the groups of apps weren't there. I created my own Scene and restarted and it' been fine. I haven't gotten any error reports or anything.
I have an issue that I cannot pinpoint the cause of figure out a solution to. Maybe someone here can help.
My Sprint G3 is always crashing and rebooting the launcher (phone doesn't turn off, just closes evwrything). I'd be in the middle of any app and it will randomly close every single app. The running apps page always displays after every crash. It's as if too much ram is being used, but it will happen even after a fresh phone restart and launching something simple like WhatsApp.
My phone is rooted via the Stump one click method. I don't have any type of rooted mods enabled, only Adfree. I use Nova launcher (paid & updated).
Is there some sort of event viewer that will log the activity of the phone so I probably someone here can see what might be causing the phone to crash? I'm tempted to Unroot and restore back to stock... But if I can avoid that, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks. I've reverted my adfree hosts file and uninstalled it. But I think the issue persists. If I try to use any app that clears cache, specifically Clean Master, when it's doing the scan of apps it'll crash midway through the scan. If I go to system settings > Apps & wait for all the downloaded apps to load the details, it'll crash there too.
This is the oddest thing.
Edit:
This visual may help. It's a video of me running Clean Master & seeing how it just crashes. I can replicate this issue every time like this, but the crashes are random when using other apps.

Ok, so I began uninstalling some apps that I thought may have been the issue... Which they weren't as the crashing still continues. I decided to reboot under safe mode and the problem occurs there too.
I honestly cannot recall if this began before or after rooting with stump. I may have to Unroot & factory restore. =/

I'm at a loss... The 2 things I mentioned can be the culprits, but not for you I guess. Some other ideas?
Did you uninstall Stump after getting root?
Have you froze or uninstalled any system apps/ priv-apps?
It might even be Nova is having issues.
That's all I got.

Tried to unroot but the phone doesn't move past the "Firmware Update. Do not unplug the phone..." screen after holding Volume Up & plugging into the computer. I installed the drivers before hand. But the "CDC Serial" doesn't update. I attempted to manually update the driver by browsing for the folder, but no go.
I may end up having to go to Sprint and exchange the phone for another one.

TL;DR version = Yes, I did fix it. Factory restore did the trick.
A few days after my last post the phone wasn't as bad as the video. It would still crash and reset but mainly after heavy app usage or when trying to clear app cache using any app like Clean Master.
Once my storage reached about 40% used and I couldn't clear the cache, I began to get constant Play Store error messages. No apps would update. I think it was error 483 or something close to hat number.
Since I couldn't flash back to stock because the drivers wouldn't install, I gave up and tried a factory reset. I nearly sh-t myself bc once I confirmed the restore, the phone didn't want to automatically reset per the instructions. I pressed the button multiple times and nothing. I pulled the battery and when I turned it back on, I got the initial screen with the "powered by android" and then black. It did not wanna do anything. Pulled battery again, same outcome. It left it for maybe 10min and still nothing.
I was ready to go back to sprint and see if I could exchange the phone. While researching the closest store, the phone beeped and the initial android setup screen appeared. This was about 25min of waiting on a black screen.
The phone is now back to working order and it's still rooted. There must have been a corrupt file that was erased/restored once the g3 decided to behave.

Congrats!
My G3 is crashing in the similar manner as the video you uploaded.
Except that it only happens when I'm in office connected to office wifi with almost no cellular reception.
On top of that, as far as I could tell... only two apps are causing the launcher to crash... the game Clash of Clans and LINE.
Very very strange....

Also my navigation bar cannot be set to black anymore -> any help?

From what I noticed, the navigation bar can be set black with a black theme, however, it still becomes white in certain apps (eg. Chrome).
I didn't see a way to make it black universally.

there are so many apps (like home banking) that are linked to the phone and cannot be backed up... I try to avoid that. But I guess it is time to switch to Samsung S10 soon was hoping to wait a little longer till the prices go down.....

Well, the battery drain is just another reason to factory reset and it's kinda ironic that you'll have to set your new phone anyway.I told you to factory reset because I solved a lot of problems on my phones through the years after major updates. It's not mandatory but very advisable. At the end it's your phone and your will to do it and set it again.

it is probably what I have to d. but it sure makes it easier to move away from a 15 month old phone.... I just didn't expect LG pushing me away. I was loyal for some time, and I really think this is one of the most beautiful phones of its time; but it sure does not perform well (anymore).
is there any "small" cache reset that will not delete everything?
in case it is interesting for someone:
Last SOT test from a few days ago (before the update) was 4:45 with normal use, mostly indoors, which is not great, but good enough, since I use my phone alot and sometimes charge 2-3 times a day.
will try a regular test with pie in a few days, but I am too busy to have it under similar conditions...

a clean install is actually difficult; (as well as to switching to other brand phones)
- my messaging apps loose all there messages (some have manual backup)
- banking apps loose there unique keys -> need to be reauthorized with the bank
- two factor auth apps need to carefully be restored
...
of course if you have a few plain games that are cloud synced, this does not matter; but if you actually use the phone it is not so easy to restore all data; (especially ensuring that nothing of importance gets lost)
I will go as far as wipe cache partition i/o factory reset. Every phone has it flaws at some point.
sure.
its just bad that there is not a streamlined backup method; LGs "mobile switch" is a mess, and gets stuck regularly on messaging apps with many files(?)
best results with preinstalled apps was actually with Huawei/honor; they seem to work quite well (but I don't like there aggressive power management)
I don't like to reset a phone before I have everything setup in a different phone (2 factor etc...) because I would hate to loose data and money.
so now I either get a cheap crap phone; or another LGV30 (cheap as hell at the moment, but getting old), or a new samsung, which I didn't plan on before autumn and new phones released....

of course if you have a few plain games that are cloud synced, this does not matter; but if you actually use the phone it is not so easy to restore all data; (especially ensuring that nothing of importance gets lost)

I had the same struggles you have.
Ultimately I had to give up and switch back to Android Messenger. It backs up all messages. For 2-factor authentication I use Authy so it can restore my codes from the cloud. But you are correct, I use Android on my Chromebook and setup a 2nd two factor method (email) in my accounts before I reset my phone. I'm annoyed by games, I had to restart so many already even though Google Play Games promises to save the progress. Hope you find another way.

it is probably what I have to d. but it sure makes it easier to move away from a 15 month old phone.... I just didn't expect LG pushing me away. I was loyal for some time, and I really think this is one of the most beautiful phones of its time; but it sure does not perform well (anymore).

This is pretty much mandatory on any device. When flashing a new OS zip in TWRP, it's always a clean install. 7-8 and 8-9.
Even if not rooted and take an OTA, you either have to let the update settle or just factory reset. I've seen MANY people throughout the years on XDA complain about the newest OS version.
The general reply will always be factory reset.

You are very misinformed here. 2factor will just send you a text. If you are that worried, turn it off till you setup the device again.

I have severa websites that are set up to use 2 factor authentification. If I delete the app before I remove 2factor on those sites or set it up new, I am looked out.
If I loose the key to interpret the text correctly I am ****ed

I noticed that the PIE update fixed issues with the camera; that pictures would not get saved, when closing the app (too fast) after taking a picture.

And we told you to stop doing that. The fix for that was to leave the camera open in the background, until the camera finished its process.

You were taking a picture and immediately force closing the camera before the HDR function could finish.
You also complained about the January update to AOD.

You are misinformed because pretend this is a new phone you are setting up.
How would you go about that? You would use the same two factor authentication on the new phone. You can't say two factor authentication wouldn't work on new phone or nobody could ever get a new phone...
Plus, there are SMS Backup and restore apps. WhatsApp has cloud backup if you turn it on Many messaging apps like Hangouts sync across different devices.
If you're rooted, there's TWRP and Titanium Backup -- where you can restore data to ALL apps.

Hi,
this update (V30 to pie, recieved today) just destroyed all of my home screen configurations (folders, arrangements, widgets, links to websites) -> really annoying.

1) I use Nova launcher and periodically export configuration backups to Gmail or Google Drive. You can also store them on your device, like microSD card. At any point in time, on this phone or another, then you can download and restore those home screens/desktops. I have 5 screens with apps arranged by most use (home screen), spreading out then by categories.
2) A little too late now, but Google also makes backups of your home screen configuration and when you Factory Reset your phone or buy a new phone, and you first sign in, Google will ask if you wish to restore that most recent configuration remembered from your most recent device. However, by this point in time, Google has now backed up the "new" Pie configuration you do not want. This is why you should have factory reset at the very beginning.
So... No one mentioned LG backup here? I find it suprisingly good

Is there any kind that actually works? I keep fishing around on Google play and everything is either old, doesn't work, or is full of sh*t, or a combination of all 3.
Welcome to XDA
If you're running Android 9 or higher simply do a factory reset. There are no known rootkits that can worm out of the user partition, once that data is wiped so is the malware.
Don't reload it again after the factory reset.

Thank you for the welcome. Sorry bout the late reply. I don't suppose there's another way is there? Im literally fresh out the box, I've never done a factory reset.

You're welcome. The other way is to find the malware and delete it completely.

Which would be how? Would I need a app or something for the pc? And if so do you have any recommendations? I have the mixsilver file manager on my phone (pixel 6 "Not pro"). Would there be a way I could find it thru there? Also my device is not rooted. So would I need to root? I'm sorry if this gets on your nerves. If so tell me, won't hurt my feelings. I'm literally a noob at this stuff. I've been trying to teach myself and just do trial and error but im getting in over my head and don't wanna accidentally brick my phone or worse.
What makes you sure you have spy/malware? Or do you mean adware?
Cheers
Tom
With Avast or AVG Antivirus you can do a pretty good scan of your apps, even system apps if you want.
For Factory reset see here https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/4596836
or go here on a PC (you need your Pixel connected by usb to the PC then): https://pixelrepair.withgoogle.com/carrier_selection

Chrome ****tin out 3 gigs of data a day. I have unlimited so it's not that big of a deal but still.....and some of the options I had in settings like "permissions, enable/disable, clear data/cache" that I know for a fact I had not too long ago are now greyed out or nonexistent. Also sometimes when I bring up "location" thru the settings menu everything is supposed to be "off" but there's 2 or 3 that look like they are switching back to say "off" as soon as the page shows. 1 of them outright takes several seconds to display any "on or off" setting at all. I've found a "Verizon" system app on my phone, some kind of Samsung telephony thing. And it seems like I can input a change to settings or something and when I look at my phone in the morning everything I had set up is back to it's previous settings.

Thank you. Umm.....stupid question but I've never done a full reset before so.....how and would I need to move my apps to another storage or could I just go back thru the play store and redownload? And any paid apps and subscriptions?
It probably explains all that in those links doesn't it?
Just do factory reset and you are okay.. Then start using phone as new..

For what it's worth, the Verizon system app comes with the phone in case you use a Verizon sim.
If you end up clean flashing or factory resetting, I would not restore any apps from backups. I would reinstall everything fresh or you could just be putting the malware back on your phone, if that indeed is what you have.

Just redownload them. Google remembers your bought apps or subscriptions in your Google account, so as long as you use the same email/account for logging in to Playstore after Factory reset you're good.
Your contacts normally are also synced to your Google Account, so you get them back also then.

It comes with the phone by default just in case you do use Verizon. Basically that app helps give the phone Verizon support, of sorts. It's disabled by default if you don't use Verizon so there's really nothing to worry about with that app.

Man thank you. There's stuff on here that I don't understand and I've been thinking it's something I've downloaded or whatever. I'm new to all of this.
