Firstly, let me just say I love the Hero.
Although I really can't believe I need to keep my phone switched on for the alarm to work? Even my Nokia banana phone had a blummin' alarm that worked when the phone was off! It seems that the Hero needs to be powered on or the alarm won't sound.
Am I missing something?
This feature was very common, pre-smartphone, but I think you'll find the vast majority of what we now call smartphones (WinMo-based, iPhone, Android etc) don't actually support this any more as they are really little computers with phone functionality. It also wasn't that long ago when my phones battery used to last 10+ days on standby, but then again it didn't even do 1% of what my Hero can do - it's the price we pay for progress.
I believe many Symbian based phones do still allow this, since an alarm clock is essentially built into the "BIOS" of the device itself.
Please don't take any of this as gospel though.

Do you mean when the phone has the screen switched off (short press of power button), or completely shut down (press and hold power, then select power off)? If the latter, then as above this is effectively like shutting a computer down, it is completely asleep. If the former it should work fine.

I'm pretty sure he means completely shut down...
My girlfriend had a Siemens SL55 some years ago, and it moved with us in a box from appartment to house, and then suddenly one day it sounded an alarm!!!!
2 years earlier she had put a reminder for an anniversary in her calendar

So effectively when you forgot to connect Your phone to the charger before going to sleep you might be late for work in the morning? Thats not a very SMART phone, is it?
From what I know devices like the Hero also have bios and it is far much more sophisticated than old Nokias. Also the Hero doesnt turn off when the battery is completely empty so it would have some juice to sound an alarm. When You turn the phone back on, it remembers the date and time so the clock is running when its switched off. IMO this is just the developers being lazy - thats all
I would imagine that this can be a deal-breaker feature for some. Unfortunately its not included in the phone specs and most people (including me) would be 100% sure that it would wake them up when turned off. AFAIK all Nokia symbians have this.

If you honestly bought an HTC Hero in order to have an alarm clock you might wanna consider selling it again...
Just put the phone in flight mode and set the alarm...
My recurring alarm didn't go off this morning, very late for work....

Are you using a task manager to kill processes? If it kills the clock the alarm won't go off.

Flight mode turns off all radio receiving and transmission on the phone.
Basically when turning flight mode on your left with a PDA without the phone part.

I have to say it is a pain that the alarm will not wake even the handset! All nokia's still do this, come to think of it is only HTC handsets & iphone (i think) that will not sound the alarm when the phone is off....
Simple things like this wouldbe so easy to implement. Oh well.

I expected that the Hero will sustain the basic features of traditional phones that most people treat as a given default and I just simply don't agree that it's impossible or hard to implement. Thats all.
I didnt buy the Hero for the alarm clock but it seems like I would have to consider buying a separate alarm clock just in case

Unfortunately, as Android is still a very young OS you can't take anything for granted....like the bluetooth!

maybe that would be a good idea....In my experience, most mobile phones are too darn quiet to wake me up anyway!!
It should be said that this is going to be more a function of the hardware, than the software. For those phones that do this, there is essentially a hardware timer that the overlying OS will program that switches on the device (effectively part of the system clock) when a particular time is reached. If the Hero has the necessary hardware, it should be possible to do this, but it would definitely require OS support since Android abstracts out the hardware so that applications can't reach it directly (except for NDK apps anyway).

Yes, but I don't close all of the apps. I close stuff manually. Perhaps I did close it on that day. Maybe I need to put it in the ignore list just incase!
Can confirm this is a bug
This is a bug, but I havent tracked down exactly what causes it.
When switched off, I mean the screen is switched off, not the whole phone.
When I go the phone on Thursday, I set the alarm for Monday through to Friday, 10.30am.
Friday morning, the phone wakes and the alarm goes off at 10.30. Fine.
Monday morning, nothing happens. Go into the settings, check alarm set for the correct time and day.
Tuesday morning, works fine, phone wakes and alarm goes off at 10.30, fine.
This morning, nothing.
My other phone alarm wakes me at 10.34. I switch on the Hero's screen, and immediately the alarm goes off, 4 minutes late!
Will try to see if it is because I wasnt in the home screen when it was switched off, or because it was a recurring alarm, or because it was charging.
Nonetheless this is a bug. Worked fine on my older phones, including several WinMo.
I will see if there is an Android alarm clock app available, and if it has the same problems.

This is a different issue to the one being discussed here. We are talking about when the phone is shutdown completely.

I got my HTC HD2 recently but I am really puzzled why and how they put such an inconvenient clock.
Is it anybody here who can solve my problem.I just want a clock which will work even when device is powered off, like any cell phone.

If the device is powered off, then the display will be too, how will you see the clock?
I think what he means is he wants the phone to switch on the when the alarm time comes round. Sounds simple. But as it was explained to me that requires a separate device to be built into the handset that operates as a clock independant of the phone functions. Sadly the HD2 uses a software device which switches off with the rest of the phone features.
Nokias do it. But then nokias dont do the things the HD2 does. Its a trade off. Get an alarm clock from your local market for £3.99. Or a watch.

well,no matter if the display is shut down when time is set then the display turns on and you see the desired time while alarm is snoozing.When you dismiss display turns off.
Thats how it works in all cell phones.
Is there any computer geek who could fix that missing feature?

Ok, seems i misunderstood you. When I press my power button, the screen comes on, and a clock is on my lock screen, so I see the time. Just like that.
No way to bypass that software?Switching off everything but the clock?
nope. the clock requires winmo to be active and running to operate.
And no way to mix with winmo?
If the next winmo7 works like that I wont get it

Why not just leave the phone on and put it on silent, you will still hear the alarm and the display will light up whilst the alarm goes off.
wow, one little feature, most of us didn't even realize that some cellphones had would turn you off of WinMo forever??? Wow...
And to think, I've been making due with a little battery powered alarm clock for the last 15 years....
i knew it was missing. i check all my phones for it. i miss it. but its not a deal breaker. actually its been some years since i had a phone that did it. still miss it though.

Yes I know but there is still these wave lenghts...My cell phone is not very far from me, less than one yard, when I sleep.If I let it on within a few time I'll begin to feel some dizziness....

Just put the phone in Flight Mode
I am also surprised phones do not 'wake up' with alarm when turned off..
I still use my old ****ty phones (Sony ericsson, nokias) as alarm clocks, coz they are so loud and so good and never fail to wake up.
HTC never got their clocks/alarm system working on their phones, its a real pity. I dont trust my HTC as an alarm clock
Right now, im having a clock problem, the phone keeps changing the time by itself, always adding 2 hours... its a real pain... need to find a solutioin to this.

I can understand why you believe it works while off if you're coming from 2006+ish dumbphones. But unfortunately, this is not the case for most Android phones.

This actually is not a phone but rather a computer just like one you had 5 years ago under your desk except it also has phone ability.
Now set alarm on your desktop comp in Windows and then turn comp off. I can imagine that alarm won't go on if the system that alarm is part of is turned off! Right?
And why do you even need to turn it off during the night? Leave it on! Are you also turning off your fridge during the nigh?

Blay0 is pretty much straight to the point, You cant really do it as the phone needs to be in standby at least for it to wake up..When/if it's finished the 2.3.3 with sense 2.1 (Alpha at the mo) has a hibernate mode which will let you do exactly that.If you are a developer you could always help with the port..Otherwise, sell your legend and buy an old Nokia 6600
I presume you turn it off because of battery life or something.
So just leave it plugged in, on a bed-side table next to you
Hmm, I always thought that hibernation in computer world is just saving active RAM pages to some kind of storage and turn the device off. After next powe on cycle those pages are restored back from storage to RAM and you en up with the system like just before "hibernation". That doesn't mean that alarm would work in this situation.
The most power effective scenario for the night is flight mode + sleep... it should drain at most 1 or 2% of your battery.

I have a good one for anyone, I have a Evo3D which I am going to do all those wicked things to.. but last night or rather this am around 645. this Evo turned its self on and set off a alarm in which I had never set. when I was trying to shut off the alarm it started clicking away at the camera.. but there is no sd card in it, so it did not save them. and I had to pull the battery to shut the cell off again. the button on the top would not function the cell. this was a very strange occurrence while I was 3/4 asleep.. the cell is not activated and its banded sprint.. has anyone ever heard of this before? I have currently taken the battery out of the cell in case of ghostly occurrences.

never heard of anything like this .. if the cell isnt activated, then nobody could be remotely controlling it via the cell radio.
was it connected via wifi?
is the device internal memory write protection unlocked? rooted? are you running any type of custom ROM or software on the device?
sure sounds like a very odd occurance .. my only guess would be maybe you were a bit sleepy?
No this thing is stock.. and I'm not the only one who heard the alarm. my partner who was in bed with me heard it also.. and this morning we both said how freakin weird..

ok here is the thing, I had taken the battery out and put it back in, and never turned the cell on. it was just laying there waiting for me to decide what to do to it.. IE root, rom mgr etc. When the damn thing just did this.. a self starting phone that rang the alarm at 645 am.. and when I picked it up the camera started acting wacky and I had to pull the battery to shut it back off.. weird huh.

would be the best invention? LOL My old phone Moto ROKR E6 have that ability. You know the phone was released in 2006.
heres the follow up. HTC whom i contacted said " that the on off button and the hardware in the notifications for the alarm was in a stuck loop meaning that it needs repaired . so its still under warranty and is on its way back to them. hopefully it will be fixed and returned. that they have seen this on this model. Im glad someone knew what the world is up.
oh and also i'm sorry I was not smoking anything, isn't my style.. sorry
This is happening on CM7DX2. Never happened before, but it is very annoying and can potential cause me minor trouble in class. I will test it again to check if it is still doing it.
What a piece of turd. This phone should get an award or something for the worst piece of ****ty tech in the whole wide world. Unless there is a setting somewhere that I set incorrectly. But why would such a setting exist? It is useless and I think my phone is misbehaving here..
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I use silent mode 2-3 times per week while in meetings that can last up to 3 hours and have never had this problem. And those times when I forget to turn it off it stays silent. I also don't have it set to vibrate at any time so if you have that on it may be part of the "scenario" that causes your problem. Sorry i don't have any more info to offer.

I've had that problem for a long time. I'm on stock 2.4. Seems to go out of silen mode most often when the battery is drained to less than 70%. I have a habit now of double-checking every now and then that it's not slipped out of silent mode. It makes for some embarrassing situations when it does. It's also against company policy where I work to let your cell phone be heard during meetings.
I have only had that issue at work a couple of times but I think it happens when I hit the volume button by mistake. I keep my volume off while at work since I am in and out of meetings all day.
Im on cm7dx2, my phone is on silent /vibrate 85% of the time, ive never had this issue.

Hmm I'll check it. Next time it does it I'll push the volume button once up, then if this is the cause, it should be on the second volume increment.
