I have the Sony noise cancelling earbuds MDR-NC31EM that came bundled with my Z2. Yesterday the right side went dead and when I jiggle the plug at the connection to the phone it comes on and off as if there is a broken wire inside.
The only problem is that they only do this with my Z2. I've tried to get them to do the same thing on 3 other devices and they work fine. I have also tried 3 other sets of headphones in my Z2, thinking it may be the phones headphone jack and they worked perfectly.
I'm confused as to what's going on. Any thoughts?

i think its a manufacturing issue, it sounds like some of the connector rings are loose
if its bugging you, you can contact sony customer support as all Xperia Devices come with a 2 year warrenty, your problem should be covered as it is a problem other people have had from brand new phones

I had problems with the apple headphones w/mic, but the apple ones without the mic worked perfectly... it must be something to do with the mic, cause now im using skullcandy inkd (no mic) and so far Ive had no problems.

yes
the problem is with the mic on the SE headset...i connected it to my blackberry...still same problem
connected headphones to ipod via the mic..same problem...without mic no problem
so mic is the culprit
On normal headphones there are three contacts on the jack: left right and ground.
On on headsets that also have a microphone there are four: left right ground and mic.
If you have to press the button for the audio to be normal then mic and ground need to be switched. All of the SE headsets are like this by default but they suck, so we can get an extension cable and cut it and reconnect it switching ground and mic. If such a cable exists. I cant find one and scrapped a variety of adapters to make an equivalent. If you would like to give it a shot you have to switch the two contacts farthest from the tip.
All of my normal headphones work no problem, so if anyone has problems with those it's a mystery to me.
Anyways we can all thank SE for this.
its okay
i bought a MW600 and ended all my problems
working fine
I found a fix for the Titan's but it does include soldering and possibly losing the mic function but if you're not bothered about that then give this a shot!
What I did was to open up the mic module and play around by bridging certain areas together. What I found was that on 1 side of the circuit inside there is a tiny resistor/cap which when bridged brings the sound of the headphones back to normal so what I did was simply solder over the cap/resistor which then brought my headphones back to life!
The reason that people have problems with these headphones is because they are set up for Apple devices and because of this 2 wires are switched around, mic and ground I believe! So, If you go out specifically to buy any of these type of headphones then make sure that they're not Apple specific and that they are universal otherwise you'll come across the above problem.
This quick fix may work for other Skullcandy headphones that are designed for Apple products but i can't guarantee it as I only have the Titan's!
Hope this helps some of you out and saves you a few penny's in the long run!
I got new headphones about a week ago (shure se535) and had been using them with my note for at least twenty hours already. Yesterday while walking to work I was using them with my note and they were working just fine, and same with right after. Then when I was getting ready for bed I wanted to listen to some music so I popped them in and picked a song and only the left side worked! so I threw them in my laptop and they both worked. Tried them in the note.. only the left works.
When I push on the headphone jack slightly to one side, the signal returns to the other ear.. I checked for lint in the hole but it still looked brand new. It seems as if the little connector inside the jack for the right side has somehow become almost flush with the rest of the jack, if not pushed in somehow. The weird thing is, when I tried it with the stock headphones with mic, both sides worked! wtf!. It doesn't make any sense lol.
What should I do? Send phone in for warranty repair? Has anyone else had similar problems?
It happens to me too. But it's random.
ParaNOTE Android
I had the same issue with my old Shure headphones the other day. The Samsung headset works fine with the Note. The Shures work fine with my laptop. It's intermittent though with the Note.
This is discouraging to hear. 3.5mm jacks have been in use for so freaking long that you'd think there wouldn't be any problems...
I'm worried that if I do go to Telus and get a repair done that they will say there is no problem and not even touch it. I wonder why my $500 shures out of the blue lost connection, yet the cheapo OEM headphones work lol. I'm very careful to not let anything put pressure on the jack when plugged in..
Sigh.

hello every one;
yesterday i went to a mobile show room to by a handsfree to my xperia s. Then a shop keeper took my XS from my hand and he plugged tha handsfree into my XS audio jack but, unfortunately it did not support to my XS then the shop keeper removed it and again he started to plug in that same handsfree like hard core at high speed 10 to 12 times again and again. Guys will it be a problem for my xperia s audio jack i mean does the pins inside tha audio jack will get any loose conections? Ha guys? I am so scared guys i did not sleep the whole night because of thinking about this
thank you in advance

Use only Sony branded headset.
OK. So I have looked ALL over the forums and interwebs and I haven't found anything that relates to the problem i'm having!
I have had my S2 for almost 2 years and it has never failed me. Let's say about a year ago I was using my official samsung headphones when the right side stopped working. Considering that it could be the phone's problem I used the headphones in other devices (inclusing pc) and realised that the headphones had the same problem, right side was dead.
So, I tried my sister's headphones (official), worked great for about a week, then the same happened. Right headphoned died!
Then I bought some similar headphones, worked great for 2 days, then....caput! Right side dies!!!
I have tried settings, looking inside audio jack, fiddle around with headphone cable. I HAVE NO CLUE!
Is anyone finding this a problem? Has it happened to anyone else? Is this a common problem with the S2?
I am running Android Jellybean 4.1.2.
I am not rooted and I don't want to take my phone apart. I'm starting to think the S2 is eating away at headphones in general, only the right side.
Thanks in advance!
I've used the stock earphones and a better quality Sony pair....and I'm also using a mod that significantly increases overall volume and bass etc........and so far, my earphones seem to be surviving......when you were using these earphones, did you notice any significant difference in the sound balance between left and right?
Edit......
Just a question......
With the stock earphones, you have the main (single) cable between the plug and the mic.....and then from the mic, you have a short left cable and a long right cable......were the other earphones you used of the same design, or were they the more traditional type where the left and right cables are the same length?

Nope! Sound quality was perfect every time. Settings were set to stereo and never had to change the equaliser. All earphones would work flawlessly in any music player, video player, youtube...etc. Then quite randomly they would lose sound in the right earphone and never work again on that side in any device. That's 4 sets of headphones I have gone through that have all broken in the same way. I haven't touched a damned thing!
Do you have your earphones in your pocket? Maybe the cable just breaks. Had this a couple of times.

The stock earphones cost maybe $2 to manufacture. I think that might have a lot more to do with it than the phone itself.

Yes. That is a factor I have taken into account. But the headphones have always been wrapped neatly and never bent. It's strange how it only seems to lose audio on the RIGHT side earphone though.

Have used earphones of great quality, costing much more than that. And the same thing has happened.
Are u using the headphones for a lot of things? ( I mean not just your phone) If that is the case, try using the headphones ONLY with your phone and laptop, i've had some problems before like this when i plugged my headphones to my friend's phone and those mini tv things on the bus.

ALL headphones I had were only ever used for the phone! I have great headphones for laptop so the phone ones were never needed.
Then there may indeed be a problem with your phone, maybe it short-circuits or something, you can try s2 nuke from hawkerpaul: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100558
If this doesn't solve the problem,it's probably hardware and there is nothing you can do, give it to a samsung center.
Don't wait anymore
After going through the OP and ALL the replies, I just want to second the opinion that it is indeed a hardware problem specific to your device only.. So try not to put the fifth pair of headphones in, just visit your nearest Samsung service centre and I am sure they will know how to go about your problem..
Hey there,
Today I decided to eventually officially get the xperia z2 so I opened the headphones and plugged them in. They're absolutely amazing, better than anything I've had so far in terms of in-ear headphones. However, I noticed a problem. Not sure if it's just me with faulty headphones but when they're plugged in and they're not like leaning a certain way, there's extreme noise, songs randomly change, Google Search app randomly opens etc. If I spin the headphones while they're plugged in as in just turn the 3.5mm jack around while it's in the hole, songs stop playing, there's really loud noise too. Have I got faulty headphones or a faulty headphone jack/phone?
Thanks in advance for any help! If some of you could please try reproduce this with your noise cancelling headphones and report back I'd appreciate it tremendously!
P.s it might be worth nothing I did put the phone in a bit of water for about 10 seconds just to test it is waterproof and I assume the headphone jack is too so it shouldn't be that right?
Jack might take upto few hours to dry up, says so in user manual

That's weird. I did the whole water thing yesterday afternoon so it's easily been over 24 hours and it has been heating up like crazy today because I've been using it so much so it should've dried up by now surely?
Thanks for your reply! :good:
Yeah it should be fine by now, then probably faulty jack or headphones as this is first time i hear this problem.

Just tried a standard pair of headphones they seem to work fine with no interference and no random music stoppages. If I spin the NC headphones while it is plugged in, I hear noise only in the right headphone. The noise specifically sounds like how it would if you were on the phone to someone and they were tapping their headphone mic on their end then the music stops. Hmm guess I'll be going back to get them swapped tomorrow!
Thanks again!
Edit: Just tried the headphones on my laptop and they seem to be working fine regardless of position. I think it may be the jack after all. Will be taking phone in to be swapped/repaired tomorrow.
Im no professor in these things, but i think nc headphones have more contact points compared to usual headphones, so if say 1 of those extra contacts were messed up, only z2 would react to it while laptop would ignore it and use them as conventional headphones. Just my theory, dont know how valid it is

Yeah I feel like either one of the points are messed up on the headphones or one of the contact points in the jack is messed up. I'll have to go in store tomorrow and try another pair of 5 contact point headphones as I don't have any others with me. I'll update tomorrow afternoon thanks again for trying to help! :good::highfive:
I have exactly the same problem, 10 - 15 minutes after a brief bit of radio in the bathroom, but the phone wasn't inside the actual shower, I plugged my noise cancelling headphones in and immediately heard a couple of small pops. Thought nothing of it to be honest, but as my journey to work went on the noises got louder and more distorted and seemed to be being caused by the background noise itself. Then the phone just went mental, started getting very hot and taking me to the Smart Connect App for no reason, the speakers stopped working completely, could call people, but not hear anything (dial tone or voice), even after multiple re-starts nothing. Tried calling my phone from my desk phone and the speakers were working for ringtone/notification, but not music and voice! Then after turning it off and leaving it for a while, things seemed to come back to normal, but then I tried plugging the headphones in and once again the phone went mental. Running stock ROM, unrooted on 17.1.A.2.55 (STILL!) I'm a bit miffed to say the least. The phone has in some respects exceeded my expectations, but sometimes feels like a half-baked product.
Now the phone isn't recognising the noise cancelling headphones at all and the phone has mad battery drain and random volume issues (alarms are refusing to silence and quiet, then loud speaker volume) considering I was in a steamy room and not actually immersing the device in water.. This totally sucks going to Sony store tomorrow..
OK just an update on what's been happening with my phone/headphones since my last post. Went to Sony store (and three store) and was basically told "meh, phone Sony" so I called 08705237237 and the girl on the phone told me to "repair the software" first and if this don't fix the problem then send headphones in for repair! As for the headphones, they are no longer recognised as noise cancelling ones for 99% of the time, when they are recognised, they make the phone go utterly mental and freeze up! Very annoying. Will try software repair and report back. Will this error affect the use of the stm10 mic I have on preorder, will have to see..
