Android use for media only? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to use an older android device for use with my chrome cast only. I have a lot of purchased movies and music through the play store that I would like my while family to have access to. But I don't want them to access my gmail or be able to install apps.
How can I accomplish this...?
Thanks in advance.

Grab an old android with minimal of 512mb of ram and at least OK developer support and root it, then remove anything Google-like other than what you need.
Also I would recommend one with an SD card to support all those movies.
Maybe the nexus one?

I have a gs3. The goal is to keep play movies and music but disable the ability to install apps and block access to any other Google services.
I'm pretty sure play movies and music need the play store which is an issue.

I just ran a test, used titanium backup to freeze play store than tried to listen to my music (cloud) from play music, worked great. Then I tried play movies and I kept getting connection error. I defrosted play store then went back to movies and it worked, then froze play store again it kept working.
So it looks like you need play store running when you first connect and play music and movies, but once you are connected you can remove play store for good.
So your s3 should work just fine

Thanks, guess a just have to try and see what happens. Was hoping someone ashtray had a tried solution.
Thanks again

Google Play Movies

I don't use google play movies or music so I used Titanium Backup to freeze both. However, Play Movies seems to be unfreezing itself whenever an update is published on Play. Has anyone else had this problem or found a workaround? I could just uninstall the app but I don't want to risk it messing anything up.

Google Play Movies missing!

Hello everybody,
ICS on P7510 amazes me again, this time with Google Play Movies. It came with ICS (UK update), my son made a short movie, which showed in the filelist in Play Movies. Suddenly, the Google Play Movies shortcut disappeared from my Tab, although in my app list in Google Play, it appeared as installed. But the shortcut could not be found (my son hadn't played with the P7510 since recording the movie, so having him accidentally removing the app is ruled out), neither was the movie shot by my son. I removed the app an reinstalled it. After two days, the shortcut disappeared again (after Google having updated Maps). Have you experienced something similar? Could it be, that Google Play Movies might not be licensed for my country (Romania)? What I find most intriguing is, that the movie by my son also disappeared. Remote acces on my P7510 is also ruled out, so it leaves only Google having removed the shortcut (or even the app).
Thank you

for the moment in romania are available only applications. but if more like me and you send mail to google play support to activate all Movies, Tvshows and books , probably they will give full access to the content. but we hope to be , for movies and tvshows with subtitles in our language, othervise is usleess in my opinion. I don,t want to pay for not subtitles tvshows and movies. IT IS NOT FAIR
probably google play movie not available in your country..

[Q] Any way to play Google Drive MP3s in the background?

Hi -- I've got a bunch of MP3s in Google Drive, and I'd like to be able to play them on my Android. The problem is that when I play an MP3 on the phone, no matter what app I choose to use to play it (and I've tried a bunch!) the MP3 opens in such a way that if I then switch to another app, playback stops. In other words, the Google Drive MP3 won't play in the background.
Is there any way to make MP3s play from Google Drive in such a way that they WILL play in the background? I've found some awkward workaround to do this -- like downloading the MP3 from the Google Drive web app, or like pinning the MP3 in the Google Drive Android app and then using an Android file manager to find the file and copy it to a folder that the music player searches -- but I really wish there was a better way!!! Anyone know one?
Thanks,
Alan

For some bizarre reason, no - you can't do it. I'd strongly recommend getting Google Music. It'll hold up to 20,000 songs and you can stream or download to your phone with the Google Music player. That' just like a regular music player so it still runs in the background.
Thank you! Yeah, I use the Google Music player for my own stuff; the MP3s in Google Drive are in shared folders from organizations I work with. So, yes, I can copy those over to Google Music when I get to my PC, but I wish there was a better way to listen on my phone to something in Google Drive that I haven't yet moved over.
I wish there was a way to just make Google Drive open the full Google Music app to play these files rather than the little embedded version!

I've just installed an app called music drive which is dedicated to playing music off the Google drive, works for me, esp as I want to keep all music on the drive

Thank you for the tip! I've been trying this, but it's really not working for me: it crashes constantly and has no search function, which makes dealing with all of the tracks in my Google Drive pretty impossible.

Hi! Not sure if you still need a solution.. But I managed to link my Google Drive to a file manager called ES File Explorer and then used the built in music player to play the music off my Google Drive.

Thanks! It's actually much easier to deal with this with the newer versions of the Google Play Music app: they automatically seem to turn up tracks downloaded by Google Drive.

[Q] Google Play Music All Access Music Downloading Question

Okay, so I purchased a great deal of songs from Google Play All Access and would like to play them on other media players without the need of buying GmusicFS as it is still buggy. Is there anything I can do so that I may enjoy the music I bought and not play them on a low quality player like Google Play Music app? Or am I just TOO hopeful?

Rydeen DV638A & Google Play Music

So I just bought and installed a Rydeen DV638A in my car. It's an in-dash receiver running pure Android, specifically Froyo.
Been using it for a few days and I absolutely love it. Would recommend it to anyone. It's got a Cortex A7 processor, is very quick and responsive, and it boots up in just a few seconds. It also comes pre-loaded with the Google Play store and has access to most Froyo compatible apps.
I've got virtually all my Google Apps installed. Drive, Movies & TV, Keep, etc. all of these work flawlessly. What is annoying me is this. I have Google Play Music installed, but when I click on it, it launches the stock music app. No matter what I try I can't get it to launch Google Play Music instead of the stock Froyo music player.
Since I have all my music on Google Play, I'd like to fix this, but I really don't want to attempt to root the unit... anyone know what I could do to solve it?
Okay, so I played with it more and here's what's happening now. I noticed that I had 10 authorized devices on my Google Play Music account, so I removed some, and that helped. Now, if I press Google Music, it actually opens Google Music - 50% of the time. The other 50% of the time it still opens the stock Froyo app, but if I exit that app and try again, it works. Weird.
Thinking about setting something up with Tasker. Maybe make it so that any time the stock music player launches, it auto launches Google Music. Any ideas?
