Hi all,
I need help with my wife's Note i717.
I was on a custom ICS ROM, and I tried to flash CM10 ROM.
I've been flashing ROMs for a few years now on various phone, so this is no different ... flashing went smooth, but after flash CM10 I discovered the phone would freeze on certain screen ... like when I go to Task Manager, or when I hit certain menu's.
After a bit of searching, seems like a few others have the same problem ... I figure maybe ROM isn't very stable, so I did a NANDOID restore to my ICS ROM, and all is good.
Tried to flash again, this time I also wiped my internal SD, and flashed a new UCLF6 radio when I flashed a newer version of CM10.
This is when all hell breaks loose. I run into even more severe problems of freezing after flashing CM10, and I can't even make phone calls anymore as the phone I call would ring, but the Note would freeze to a point the other side can't hear me.
So again I did a NANDOID restore of my ICS ROM, but this time I'm not so lucky. After restore, my Note is VERY SLOW ... it'd take seconds going from one menu to the other, hitting "OK" buttons and the phone freezes for a few seconds before it goes to the next menu.
So I did a clean wipe, starting with a ODIN flashed the stock AT&T image. But rightaway after flashing the AT&T stock ODIN image, after the phone boots up again I knew I got the same problem. Even on the setup wizard by AT&T the phone reacts VERY SLOW like before, or downright freezes.
I followed up with rooting it, flashing CWM, then TWRP recovery, and tried to flash different ROMs ... all give me the same problem. I also tried NANDROID restore again, but same thing!
Any suggestion on what I can do next? I thought flashing AT&T ODIN is already the cleanest wipe I can do to restore my phone ... any help is appreciated!!!
did you make sure you wiped cache, davilik cache and did a factory reset? if you didnt do all 3 then flash again sounds like a dirty flash is what you have been doing
Yes always wipe cache, dalvik and factory reset 3 times before flashing any rom, not to mention I thought ODIN flashing stock rom would get me back to square 1 regardless of previous flashing?
Try using Kies recovery through your computer.

Kies recovery eh? I can give it a try but how is that different from ODIN?
I had similar issues this past summer...I would try various roms and get crashing and instability, calling issues, etc.
Make absolutely sure that your modem is flashed...I had to do it via Odin. Get a stock one for your carrier. I assumed that when I flashed a new rom that the modem got updated as well but I was wrong. I went from FJs rom to CM10 and got the same issues as you. Went back to FJs rom and the issues persisted. Did a nandroid restore to stock GB and still had the same issues. Then I used the 'muglf4' version for my carrier (Bell), flashed the modem separately and all went well since.
Might not be your issue of course but its something to verify (that the modem and kernel are being flashed).

Can you point me to where I can find the tar file for MGLF4 radio? mine is also a Bell unit and I want to ODIN flash the radio to see if it would fix my problems.
Thanks!
chriskwarren has the answer. Your LF6 radio download was corrupted. This happens frequently, so just redownload it and flash it again either with odin or CWM.
If the phone is at&t use LF6, if Bell use the Bell radio.

It could be, but I can't seem to find the Bell radio for ODIN flashing, even with a lot of searching ... if someone can point me to it it'll be greatly appreciated.
BTW, having done some more tests I think the problems are caused by either a corrupted radio and/or corrupted kernel.
- If I run the phone in airplane mode, without turning on the radio, the phone works fine, for the most part
- What guarantees the phone to freeze and have all kinds of problems is if I try to make a phone call. The phone will either give me "Call cannot be sent" error message, or it will dial, the other number will ring, but can't hear a word at all, and the Note will freeze.
I have tried flashing different radio's I find, but most radios I find are CWM ZIPs, not ODIN TARs. I don't know if CWM can't do a 'complete overwrite' or something, but flashing different radio's don't help. I want to try to flash radio via ODIN, but can only find 1 appropriate ODIN file, and that tar file might be corrupted in itself because it fails trying to flash it through ODIN.
I suspect it may also be a corrupted kernel, because in trying to make CM10 work I flashed both a different radio and a different kernel, which causes all the problems I have.
I have a Bell Note i717M ... what is the safest radio and kernel I can use with ICS ROM? If someone can point me or send me the ODIN tar's it will be greatly appreciated. I searched and searched but can't find much for ODIN on xda!
Check the "note super everything thread "....
At the top of the general section ...
About half way down the page you will see the modem section .....and bell is there ....g
Try a stock kernel. If else fails, try a bell modem.

Thanks for all the advices guys.
I have tried different radio's, all of them CWM zips. None of them seems to work ... the supposedly "stock" kernel makes it worse actually.
I wonder if ODIN would flash 'cleaner' ... but so far, can't find any ODIN modem.
As stated earlier, your modem you flashed was corrupted and you need the Bell modem.
If it is in CWM zip format, unzip the file on your pc, and use the mdm.bin or modem.bin file in the unzipped folder. That goes in the Phone slot of Odin3.

Ahhhh I see ... thanks a lot. I'll try that tonight.
Thanks a lot that did the trick!! As soon as I flashed modem.bin everything works.
How about amss.bin? Do I need to flash it too?
Noooo.
Similar issue - Note very sluggish
Hey guys, I'm having a similar issue as the OP. I've tried updating my Note to ICS without success and was working fine on stock ATT GB. I tried again today to update to ICS and failed, reverted to stock ATT GB from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330, and now my Note is sluggish as heck!
Right at the ATT setup flow, the touchscreen seems very unresponsive and screen taps take a few seconds to register. The soft keys are pretty much unusable - if I hit back or home, the whole thing freezes and randomly resets.
I made sure I wiped cache, wiped Dalvik cache and factory reset and then flashed the stock ROM again, but same thing. I found the stock ATT modem and flashed that as well by putting mdm.bin in the Phone field in Odin, but no luck...
Any idea what else could be wrong here?
Appreciate any help guys! I'm close to having a large ungainly paperweight here...

Did you by chance flash the "[MOD] Google Wallet TW 4.3 Fix (ALL VARIANTS) [DEODEXED or ODEXED]" wallet mod into the STOCK slot using Safestrap? If so, the only way to recover wifi is to re-flash it. I tried several times on MK2 and MJ7 and it just hosed WiFi. The developer did not appreciate me pointing out that saying "ALL VARIANTS" in all caps wasn't exactly true.
I was able to flash the no-wipe MJ7 to recover my phone, so that's what you should be trying first. So, typical set of questions: does anything show up in the Device Manager when you plug the phone in? Did you try a different USB cable?

I am currently using the MJ9 radio and I am convinced that service and signal strength has been worse ever since. I realize I would also have to go back to Beans 22 or another older rom. I couldn't remember if I flashed I605VRAMC3 Modem or ODIN it. I assume since it's a ZIP and that ODIN wouldn't recognize it that I can flash it?

i assume inside the zip there is no .tar just meta folder and modem.img. i think since its a .zip and no .tar inside, you can flash it.

nutpn - XDA member Zif posted a recovery flashable MJ9 modem that I’ve been using for the last couple of months with no problems. I’m still on build number JZO54K.I605VRAMC3, but this let me easily update my baseband version to VRUEMJ9. I feel like it gives me a little better performance than the VRAMC3 modem did… it seems like it locks onto 4G a little better and it quickly switches between 4g and 3g when I’m in an area with a weak 4g signal. I can also get a 3g signal down in the basement at work where I used to have trouble getting a data signal at all in the basement. I never did any performance tests to “prove” that it works better for me… this is just my personal belief based on the above experiences. If you want to give Zif’s zip a try, go to this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...b0ad9e7bb4468139f954f703dc7bbc13#post48871165 (Zif's repackaged .zip file is at the VERY BOTTOM of his post.... it's the VRUEMJ9_zif zip file).
I would encourage anyone who tries out the zip to first verify the MD5 or SHA1 before flashing it. (Zif has them posted under the download link). Also, I can not promise that this will work well for everybody, so flash at your own risk.
Also, here’s a link to some good advice on how to properly flash the modem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43217826&highlight=how+install#post43217826
If Zif’s and Dr. Droidberg’s posts help you out, I’d encourage you to give them a thanks.
Good luck.
:fingers-crossed:
Thankyou I appreciate it
So wait. So there is a flashable mj9 out now so We no longer have to flash mj9 with Odin?
Or do we still have to Odin mj9 firmware?
Or is this just another modem that came out recently. I haven't been on the boards for a while. Trying to get caught up on my info.

@iflip, I'm not sure if the flashable MJ9 modem would work if you were upgrading to a 4.3 ROM like N3bula, Alliance, etc... I am still on 4.1.2 running Beanstown106's build 22 ROM. I wanted to try out the MJ9 modem... and the recovery flashable MJ9 works great for me with my current setup. If I was going to upgrade to a 4.3 ROM, I would probably go ahead and ODIN flash the full MJ9 firmware just to make sure that everything was set up properly.

I just received a replacement motherboard for my VZW Note II, its on MJ9 and working perfectly. But I still want to have LL4 modem on it. The phone is OTA 4.3 rooted. Can I down the modem baseband? Thanks in advance.
Hi dr.faramroze -
It seems possible to downgrade the modem to VRALL4 ... but I don't know if everything would work properly on 4.3. I am just curious, but what would be the benefit of downgrading to an older modem? Do you think you might get better reception? If you decide to try to downgrade, I would definitely make a backup of the EFS Partition and keep it somewhere safe.
There are probably a few ways to do this.... but this might be one way to downgrade the modem--- You could try installing Safestrap recovery and and then flash the VRALL4 modem from there. I would first make backups of everything (The stock rom, efs partition, modem, etc...) and keep copies of the backups on your computer or another device if needed for later. (I would guess you could always ODIN back to stock 4.3 if things get really messed up....). Then you will need to wipe Dalvik and cache before flashing the VRALL4 modem.
(If you want to really be careful to make sure you have a good EFS backup, you could also do a secondary backup using one of these tools and save it somewhere safe).

Instructions on how to flash different modem in recovery were provided by Dr. Droidberg here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43217826&highlight=how+install#post43217826
-----------------
Again, I do not know if this would work and it could mess up your device to where you no longer get service. Unless there is a clear benefit to changing over to VRA4LL that justifies the risk, it might be better to just stay with the MJ9 modem that's there already. (Also, I don't take any credit for any of these developer's work-- so I would encourage you to hit the Thanks button for each of them if their work helps you).
Good luck.
Sorry so long to reply to anyone sick. Ugh so anyway the downgrade works and I actually have data in the office and at my sis in laws. When MJ9 was installed, at the office and sis in laws I would have the same bars and signal strength but intermittent to no data at all. The worse part about the office if I literally walk 4ft away I have full signal strength and 20meg download. I'm behind a kitchen and a cooler, plus sorta underground. To my knowledge MJ9 is required for any 4.3 roms or you'll lose bluetooth and Wifi. A buddy of mind's wife has a locked unroot note 2 with signal issues and Verizon told him they are having tower issues.

So I rooted a Note II,which had never been updated from VRALJB. using the NO YOU casual injection

Waiting on the red screen for about 20 minutes now. Should I have changed the kernel from what it was originally (never took an update)? I want to be sure the bootloader doesn't get relocked. I'm hoping I didn't need to update the kernel before I installed this ROM. No one really said what to do, so I went ahead with it.
Of course my post count is less than 10 so I can't ask those who are actually installing now. And because I'm in a rush, and the rules of the forums, I left off the title. So if you get to the bottom of this and realize you just wasted 5 minutes, sorry, thank a spammer.
do you have STOCK ROM with Odin??
Stock ROM with Odin?
You probably just need to flash MJ9 firmware via ODIN and repeat process. Read Beans (Alliance) thread or others for directions. I would probably update to the latest of TWRP though, double check that though.
It originally was stock VRALJB. rooted via Casual NO YOU method. After I rooted via casual method, I didn't replace the stock with a different ROM via Odin, but according the the threads to root, I could have just flashed new ROMs via TWRP. I was taking the advice per Adam Outler in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045563 which he suggest don't use Odin unless absolutely necessary. And I've been upgrading my motherboard on my workstation, which is what I normally use to connect to phone. My laptop can't hold a steady connection to the samsung because of drivers, it's pretty frustrating and something I gave up since I figured out that it was just easier to have the desktop do it, but right now thats not an option because it's in pieces.
But my problem is exactly the same as this guy, post #93 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2765021&page=10
I did manage to follow the steps he used (post #99), which was to wipe, wipe, ROM, then Agni kernel. It took, and seemingly no problems. But when I go to get on wifi this morning, it wouldn't start. Trying to toggle the switch wouldn't work, and trying to hotspot it led to "error".
Thanks for helping out.
I'll look around to see if I can find the Red Beans Alliance thread. I thought maybe I needed an MJ9 FW, but I wasn't sure how to put it on (trying to stay away from Odin). That guy posted that he was coming from 4.1.2, which I was coming from 4.1.1.
thanks again.

Well it may work once the ND7 firmware is released. From an update to the thread you linked it should be tomorrow.

Well the ND7 takes care of part of it. But with the ROM, then I no longer have root. And using the built ROM, I was having the same problems as others. I'll report back, I thought it might have something to do with TWRP, because even when I flashed the update superSu from Beans thread, still couldn't get root back.
Requesting help. I am not a noob by any means, I have installed custom roms many times, and rooted many phones, and installed and used safestrap on several phones, but I cannot get ANY custom rom to install properly on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, which is (was) rooted, with Safestrap 3.72, and MK2 firmware.
I was running the stock 4.3/mk2 firmware, with the latest busybox and supersu, and the latest safestrap, and safe root installed. I was able to successfully root the phone, and install safestrap, but even when I created a rom slot, gave it a name, wiped it completely, and then try to install one of the many 4.3/mk2 "Safe" roms, no rom will boot, once installed. It is so frustrating! I read somewhere that with the Verizon S4, and MK2 firmware, you could only install a rom in the stock rom slot, so I tried that, and now safestrap is gone, and the phone boots to a light blue screen with little green checkmarks. So I'm in the process of downloading the original MK2 firmware from Samsung and using Odin to restore. Anybody have any ideas? I'm thinking of quickly getting rid of the S4 while it still has some value.

3.72 is for 4.4 KitKat and was made for the AT&T version of the S4, therefore, you are not able to create slots. You would need to install 3.71 and only flash 4.3 based roms. If you want 4.4 based roms you need to upgrade to NC5 and install 3.72, but you are only able to flash to the stock side.
There's plenty of info for you to read in the General section.

Thank you for your response. Actually what I failed to mention is I did have 3.71 installed first, and I had the exact same problem. So it's not an issue with the safestrap version. And I have tried about 12 different ROMs. Including BajaROM-S4-Release-v-2.2 and BoneStock4.3_S4v2.1. As I said, I'm not a newbie at all, and I'm not about to hunt and peck for information again (which is what I've been doing for two days now). I wouldn't have asked for help if I had been successful in my search.
I have never had an issue installing any safestrap compatible rom...3.72 is strictly for android 4.4 and no rom slots...so no way you would ever get a rom installed using 3.72 on MK2 base build. As for 3.71...never heard of any issue with SS compatible roms for 3.71 not installing right. Really difficult to figure out what you are doing wrong from what you are giving us...

I'm 100% knowledgeable on CM, but when it comes to Safestrap or TWRP base Recoveries I'm far from noon but not an expert so to say... Here's my issue. I have the NC5 firmware and once had the Hyperdrive RLS17.1 KK S4 Final.zip... I went back to the I545VRUFNC5-Stock-Root-Deodex.zip.... I recently attempted to download another ROM, (based on the same firmware of course) as soon as I attempted to flash it (which only took about 1 min and didn't work) I figured something was wrong. So I just decided to go back to my recovery that I've made a few moments ago. When I tried to do that. The msg " E: Unable to mount '/system' " appeared.
Now I've notice since then Wiping and Flashing return the same results.
There is no longer an OS on my S4... I can not Mount the System.
So I believe in stuck in Safestrap 3.72.
(Please let me know what other info you need, I spent the last couple of days trying to figure this out on my own, so far I'm losing the battle)
Please help guys.

Similar Issue
I know there must be a way... If only I can get it to mount the "system" and "systemorig"...
I'm going to play around with the Slots and the datas Size's and see what I come up with.
Pretty sure you will need to Odin the stock NC5 image and start over.

If possible, could you please send a link?
Thanks in advance

I only just saw these posts, I have not been on here for a week or so but if you are still having issues... As far as what went wrong to begin with, did you factory reset/advanvanced wipe all but the internal sd before flashing? Are you only installing into the 'stock' slot on SafeStrap? As far as the fix, if you are suck in Safestrap, you will need to boot into recovery mode, if possible and wipe/factory reset and then boot into download mode and flash one of these http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172 in Odin.

Thanks a lot man. The is has been resolved...
I had to Odin the stock NC5 (exactly what you've just mentioned in your response.) I had to flash it twice actually. The first time only took about 3 mins. I then tried to restore my backup, but during the time it restari SS (when the flash was approximately 90% done) I then went to restart the system and then received the notice "No OS loaded). So I wiped all except my SD card and then I just thought to myself to just try and Odin the stock NC5 one more time (it was getting late and I was about to give up). On the 2nd attempi it took almost 3 times the length as before (15-20mins) when it finished, it bypass the " unlock Samsung screen " and displayed the stock splash screen and audio then the Verizon screen. ( I was happier the a crackhead at a free crack-give-away)...
So I want to thank you for responding, I was determined not to give up,, and it was really close before I was about throw in the towel... Thanks a bunch. (You're response was exactly what I did last night)... I was about to update my issue as soon as I fixed it las night was it was so late and I was really sleepy, then I wake up to your message with the exact fix.
Thanks a lot ☺☺
