Hey Guys and Gals
Smartwatches have been gathering pace for the past few months, but with IFA 2014 just around the corner, we're bound to see a lot more hit the streets this coming season. We have just heard about the leaked specs for the LG G watch R and the Samsung Gear S, so lets take some time to compare the two devices. Both companies have taken a very different approach on their latest releases, LG opting to ditch the square screen in favor of a circular display, while Samsung have raised the bar of the traditional, and opted to use its curved screen technology. The practicality of both has yet to be decided, so comparing these two should be interesting.
So lets compare some of the devices features:
Connectivity:
The Gear S is the first smartwatch to feature full 3G connectivity, enabling it to function independently of its "parent" device. It's still unknown which devices will be compatible with the gear S, but with SIM support, this one has to go to the Gear S.
Display Size:
The G Watch R's circular display looks great, giving it a "classic" watch look, but this is at the expense of screen real estate. With the Gear S having approximately 44% greater screen size, the Gear S is the clear victor.
Display Shape:
Here is where the two companies have taken a very different approach. The circular display of the LG G Watch R gives it that retro look, but we're yet to see how practical these circular displays will be. Sure they look great as a watch, but will all of the smartwatch functions transfer well to the round display. The same could be said of the Gear S, its curved display is a first and how this will translate to everyday function is yet to be seen. Until we get some hands on, we will go on looks alone. Given both have a very "unique" look, we're going to have to call it a tie, as its down to personal preference.
Display PPI:
With both devices sporting ppi of over 200, they both should be reasonably sharp. The Gear S does jump slightly ahead with a ppi of 300, the G Watch R trailing behind with around 250 ppi Numbers don't lie, winner Gear S.
Software:
Here's the biggest difference between the two, one running Samsung's own Tizen OS and LG's on Google's Android Wear. Wears's superior voice command has always been better than Samsung's offering, but as the Gear S will be receiving an updated version, we're yet to see how well they will compare. The Tizen OS does allow direct voice calls with the smartwatch, something we're yet to see in Google's Android Wear. Until we get a hands on, this one is a draw.
Heart Rate Monitor:
LG has added a heart rate meter over its predecessor, so ticks for both.
Fitness Tracking:
Big thumbs up for both of these devices, they can track overall daily steps, or individual workouts. Great to keep track of distance traveled and calories burnt.
Water Resistance:
Both devices feature full IP67 water and dust resistance.
Processor, RAM:
Without more information, we're going to have to go from the raw numbers here. The G watch packs a 1.2GHz quad core processor, with the Samsung a 1GHz dual core. As LG lists the Snapdragon 400 chipset, its likely to be the same as the first G watch. Both devices have 512MB of RAM. From the numbers, winner G Watch R.
Thanks to TotalTechWar for the Vid
Looking forward to hearing members thoughts on how these devices compare, both have taken a very different approach on the smartwatch. who will be victorious?

The only issue I have, okay issues I have, with Android Wear is that the devices do not have a speaker and so you're looking at the device for EVEERRYYYTHIINNNG ... I hate that. I want my watch to tell me itself, not to have to read a bunch of teeny-tiny text. I'm not everyone, of course.
One other thing I'd note is that I find Android to be clunky and ... yes, bloated. So, it requires a lot more processor power to run an Android Wear device than it does a Tizen smartwatch, and maybe because Samsung started from the ground up with Tizen on the Gears. Tizen is much lighter and quicker than Android ever was on the Galaxy Gear, so the processor doesn't have to be as powerful. Maybe it's all of those frilly animations Android Wear has ... which Samsung trades off for real processing tasks like phone calls, and S-Voice, and all of those wacky sensors.

I agree, screen is the only thing that I like as well, 720p looks good. 4.65in is also pretty nice, dont know if its really worth it now? probably not. I was expecting a better CPU speed atleast...
But its not worth the wait for AT&T users (atleast me). Good that I went with GS2
I wonder if the CPU and GPU are the same ones used on the S2.
The screens sounds amazing, but having just bought an S2 I'll be keeping it for a while. Maybe I'll get a Galaxy S3 or whatever next year.
Screen might be "HD" but it uses pen tile matrix as opposed to real RGB matrix
http://www.displayblog.com/2011/02/...us-dumps-pentile-matrix-goes-real-stripe-rgb/
So it might display more stuff on screen but the res isn't gonna be true HD.. Much like the original SGS...
its not for me. If it was a real step up from the SGS2 id consider selling mine for it but the only real upgrade is ICS. Id rather wait till that comes out for the devs to play with i think.
Everything else bar the camera looks good but i couldn't justify (or afford) to upgrade if the camera is only 5 mega pixel when i have an 8 mega pixel camera on the SGSII.

Idea For Next Prime

Ever thought of a pad Without bezel border? Maybe that is why Acer and Apple's pad use such high resolution. They Fill the entire surface screen with Pixels!
The Ideal is to have Virtual bezel that will only go full screen when watching movies or dynamic bezel borders that depends on programs or environment.
just thought of it and think it's a good idea...
a) where would you put your hand when holding the device?
b) The transformer has a higher resolution than the iPad and >= any tablet that acer produces, so I don't have a clue what you are talking about there.
1) still has Bezel in main screen. only when watching movies the bezel will disappear. and u can still hold it, but won't effect it. That is what i mean by Dynamic bezel.
2) the new resolution will be 1920X1200, that is extreme packed density. So bigger area will result better yield in display and a seamless border. Like the new High end LED TV
Just a Thought, and thought it will be Different.
the resolution for the ACER Tergra 3 confirmed to have 1920x1200

I believe he's referring to the iPad 3 and Acer's upcoming 2012 tablet (that indeed will have 1920 x 1200 resolution): http://androidcommunity.com/acer-iconia-tab-a700-sends-photos-from-russia-with-love-20111229/
I'm not sure exactly what he wants out of a "virtual" bezel, but I'm pretty confident the trend will be towards smaller bezels.
I wonder if Tegra3 is powerfull enough for such resolution... The resolution is quite nice though - not need to worry about HDMI output because it's the same as your TV/LCD (apart from more pixels in height) etc.
1) I hope if they can add 2GB RAM to support window$ 8 and higher!
2) 3D screen

Virtual bezel would be interesting. But it would only work with an AMOLED screen. LCD screens when "black" draw too much power. Edge to edge display that has a 1/2 inch virtual bezel that could be controlled by the user...pretty crazy idea.
Do not want virtual bezel.
I have large, meaty hands. My pads wrap around the devices I am carrying. Already I have problems with touching the screen when I don't mean to because of this. And I do not want to change the way I grip things because my grip, while very gentle (after 12+ years working with military grade electronics), is quite secure.
>where would you put your hand when holding the device?
This is a pet peeve of mine wrt tablets. Why must we grip it with the thumb (on the bezel)? It puts a lot of pressure on the thumb, which means faster hand fatigue. Why not have a built-in (removable) handgrip at the back? Like this below:

I am pretty much pleased with Prime's display, dont need it any bigger than current size. Bezel size is also not that big, but the dynamic bezel would be a good innovation, if done right.
What I would really want in next prime is :
- 3g or LTE of some sort
- Wi-fi Direct (I am not sure if it can be enabled by s/w fix)
- Stereo speakers
- IR sensor (I know it is oldschool, but I like this thing on Sony's tablet S)
- Bluetooth 4.0 (I really dont know why I want it)
I am not so worried about USB 3.0, as I believe Wi-Di is the way to go. If future cameras or SD cards comes with built in Wi-Di, it should be able to send the pictures directly to the tablet, for editing and sharing.

Look very great on the xperia P, could you provide a download link to the wallpaper?
Sent from my LT26i using XDA
Things look FAR better on the Xperia P. I tried to not bias myself in as many shots as possible by not identifying which phone it was before deciding which was better, and in every single one I found the Xperia to be the superior display.
I do hope they're able to either overcome the size limitation of the white magic displays for LCDs, or at least continue this work on future OLED displays.
Wow. the quality of the xperia p display is unreal. Wish the xperia s came with white magic as well

I have neither phone and stumbled onto this thread by accident so no ax to grind but there are some problems with comparisons of this sort in general and I have trouble accepting the statement as to bias quoted here.
As to the bias: it is impossible for me to not immediately know which phone display I'm looking at simply because the size difference of the image is painfully apparent in each and every instance with that of the Note being significantly larger. Even someone such as my self who "has no ax" can't avoid bias it's built into the human animal and can't be removed except by carefully designed double blind trials where there can be no hint of identity. No one could claim the conditions of the samples here are "double blind" in fact there is zero level of disguising which is which, ergo bias is an unavoidable consequence.
Regarding the comparison itself:No information is given regarding the displayed images. The resolution the original images were shot at is just one example of possible problems with the comparison. If the originals were shot at any other than the native resolution of the particular device in question it could appear distorted when scaled to the non-native display parameters. For example, if it were shot at qHD then blown to HD it would certainly suffer in the translation because the larger display simply can't offer more information than was contained in the original and might simply make any flaws larger and thus more apparent. A multitude of other artifacts could be introduced depending on conditions and even on the display of the screen of the device you are looking at the thread with.
In the image of the Headphones the words on the earpiece are very much clearer on the larger image on my computer screen ditto with the netting in the fruit image. On the other hand the colors and white balance appears to be better on my screen on the smaller images.
Is one better than the other? Very subjective.
Of course it's subjective. That's why we have some people out there who prefer to look of OLED displays to LCD, and vice versa. As for the comparison, yeah there are some pics where the size gives it away, but IIRC there were a couple where the sizes were similar. The pics aren't all loading properly for me now for some reason so I can't identify which one those are, but before making my post I did view the pics on both my tablet, 40" LCD TV and 55" LCD TV and in all cases I prefer the Xperia Ps screen.

What'yall think of this

http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/08/hisense-x1-smartphone/
Who in their right mind would buy a phone over about 5.5 in, any bigger and you look like a twat with it to tour ear
You know, I'd love the bigger screen, and those specs make it rival the Z Ultra. It's appearance also seems nice, though I've never heard of Hisense, so I have no clue about their build quality.
But... It's coming out in the Summer with those specs. What would roughly be a full year after the Z Ultra. By that point I'm hoping we either have or are hearing about (Depending on if we have a new chipset out that makes it worth the upgrade) a Z Ultra Refresh. Plus, the bezels on that thing look worse than the Z Ultra's- If people are complaining about those bezels now, this won't be drawing any support.
All that, and we haven't been told how big the screen is, which is arguably the sole draw of the Z Ultra.
Basically, unless it's hella cheap or is basically a nerd phone's dream (Something like 64GB internal storage AND an micro SD card slot) with a couple of other bells and whistles, I don't see this being a competition for the Z Ultra when it gets released.
Looked quite nice until I saw some of the images showing quite a gap between the plastic top (looks like aluminium) and the glass.
Then continuing to view the other images it looks like an old phone. Not that its worn, but that its dated. Like it should have been released last year.
Im still banking on the Z2 Ultra. Hoping it will have the issues ironed out. Namely the build, and components improved.
DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
Hisense is just one of dump Chinese phone producers in China. Their phones have bad quality and services. The phone comes with Android 4.2, maybe you won't get update to 4.4 for rest of your life. Since the user group is small, there is rarely custom roms and do not even think of CM.
Who? Those that want screens bigger than 5.5 and are secure enough not to give a f**k what other people think when talking on them.

Wasn't aware of that if it's truly the Hisense product history.
The device will be released by Sliver in the US and with 4.4 according to reps at CES.
Hardest thing would be leaving this hardware...which is the classiest thing in the industry.
And I agree...banking on the Ultra2 can't be a bad strategy. Wonder about overall sales tho, given the small niche this size device serves, and if it'd prompt Sony to even release an Ultra2.

I really don't mind big phones that's why I bought the ultra. but if this phone do not offers nothing better then the ultra but a bigger screen.... no I don't think so. but if it offers good specs then i'll see.

Chose a Feature for the Note 8! (fngrprnt scanner under display useless?)

I keep reading in all tech news about how the Galaxy Note 8 will miss the "Game Changing" fingerprint scanner under the display (example article link below). I don't get it. And here's why:
A fingerprint scanner is a mean to unlock your phone. It's not an actual feature you use. It's not something that will give you a better experience when you actually use your phone. For example, if you prefer the iris scanner, or you don't even lock your phone, that's it. You won't even be using it. And you will not be missing on anything since it's not a feature based on usage experience. It's not even something that should be advertise as a "game changing" feature. It doesn't change anything.
There are way more important game changing feature that the Note 8 could have:
- Dual Speakers for better hearing experience when sharing music with your friends, or just listening to music when working or chilling, especially when you do not want to use headphones. Dual Speakers means stereo music experience. This is a true improvement.
- 4K Display would mean better VR experience without the screen door effect. Now that's an improvement I kept advertising in previous threads already.
- Dual Camera or even Stereoscopic Cameras for optical zoom and 3D shooting when needed. And even 180 degree 3D camera. Now that's "game changing". It gives you the option, if you wish so, to shoot in 3D or in 180 degree. It's something more you can do with your phone. It's a new feature.
But for some reason way beyond me, the whole tech media prefers to focus on a "Fingerprint scanner under the display"...
----------- One could argue that "Yeah but a fingerprint scanner under the display is also an improvement".
It would be naive to think so. Because it is not. A Fingerprint scanner under a display doesn't improve in anyways your experience when unlocking your phone. Let me explain:
There are no technical differences between unlocking your phone by pressing a home button with integrated fingerprint scanner or pressing an area of the display with a fingerprint sensor under it. For you it's the exact same gesture, the same "unlocking experience". You put your finger in a specific area, and the phone unlock.
In fact, it doesn't even make a technical difference if the sensor is under a home button, under a display, under a speaker, on the back of the phone, under the camera, on the side of the phone, on the top bottom left, very little to the right, yes right there, etc... You still have to put your finger on that area for the phone to unlock.
An improvement would be "The Phone Unlocks Wherever you Press on the Display". Ok. Now that would be an improvement I would accept to argue against. "Hey, wherever I touch my phone, it unlocks immediately". Now yes. This is an improved experience. I still wouldn't care for it, but i would accept it as an improvement.
But tech is not there yet. And you, pressing a specific area under a display or anywhere else, doesn't make any difference and is NOT Game Changing.
--------------- But enough of what I think. Maybe I am missing something. So that's why I started a Poll. Please vote and please share your opinions.
PS: Here's a link to one of the articles I am talking about. There are many like this one.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordon...ice-cost-expensive-release-date/#38711146202b
I could careless about finger print at the back, its bad but I will use the Iris scanner Or pattern its not a huge deal when you find alternative. I also do not care about 6 of RAM That much unless samsung figures out how to take advantage of it. I also do not care for 3300 Mah battery since the new processors are reducing power consumption and s8 plus taught us a lesson about lower mah with larger screen on time.
What I would love to see:
- Better battery life (6 Hours Minmum even on Full HD At least!)
- New S Pen features That are innovative
- Faster
- that it doesn't explode or suffer in water resistance test
- that it comes with 128 gb sd card gift
- That bixby some how interacts with the S Pen.
- The the S Pen got the ability to read Text for me.
Other Wise I am not really complaining no thing to complain in the Note 8 it looks almost perfect (ignore finger print that has an alternative or 4k because it drains the battery). as for Dual Horizontal camera samsung must have a reason for this. 4k sucks because VR Is pointless for me at moment, it will increase the battery and display resolution causing cost problems and battery drain for the back I don't care how pretty or ugly it is. it can't be any worse than the Note 5.
What I am loving so far :
- The fact it supports SD Cards. I am buying 200 GB SD Card with the 64 GB Model giving me a total of 230 GB Of Storage (because sd card will be 180 GB total and the 64 gb model will need about 10 GB Of storage for the Stock ROM). Pretty enough for me!
- The fact the screen is Huge and Bezeless Perfect to write on using the S Pen!
I am waiting until samsung surprises me with the Software features of the Note 8.
P.S : Here is the Rumored S Pen :

Ive long wanted to see front firing speakers in samsung devcies...would be awesome.
Now that apple sort of does it samsung should really step up.
I prefer the fingerprint sensor on the back ever since my nexus 6p but not up by the camera like on my s8 plus...its not bad but not ideal either
I didnt like the front sensors on my s6, s7 edge and note 7 because you had to press to turn the screen on then unlock which is stupid.
