Hi,
my girl friends S3 is actually completely stock and it's so laggish. Many people seem to have this problem. Everywhere they say "install cyanogenmod and it's fast". OK, but CM has no good camera app. For my GF the camera with its filters was the reason for buying it.
So is there a ROM which offers the Samsung Camera app AND fast experience?
(For example, I watched the video of S5 Sensation ROM and it seems to be laggish too.)
No asking for best rom etc. Try them out yourself.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app
If it would be my phone, I would do so.
Perhaps someone here has had the same issue and found a way out by using another ROM and could share his experience.
It's wrong: CM camera is good, simply the stock one is much better... then is true that on CM builds there is no HDR/HDR+ filter support.
And yes, CM is tremendously faster than any stock or custom Samsung rom (be wary of enthusiasts who say the opposite).
"Thanks" to the TouchWiz, Samsung devices may be laggy, especially when you find that you want a bit more by a smartphone.
TouchWiz is the unremovable proprietary launcher who provide features (often useless) like many gestures and more others.
It's known by me and everyone as a "performance killer".
If an "excellent" camera is the priority, flash the MIUI rom, it provides almost the same Samsung experience and has good reviews.
It's based on the old 4.1.x Android, but receives frequently updates.

It doesn't have much features or filters. That's the problem. And other camera apps from the Play Store are mostly not userfriendly and/or do not have good filters. Personally I prefer the Sony camera app. My GF likes the "antique warm", "antique cold" and "blue point" (translated)

Please no specific rom calling or I might have to call a mod here. Just give tips in general types of roms like sammy, aosp etc. Hehe

Nor Samsung stock camera.
Under photo editing (both when and after taking photo) I find grateful the best rated camera apps, and there are a lot.
This probably because developement is concerned only to an app, not to an entire rom such Samsung, CM, MIUI, etc.
So it's an easier work, so you're luckless if you tell me the opposite about, do newly some research.
Then your mentioned three filters who exist in Cyanogen camera too!
And is easy to have lags on a Samsung stock/custom rom, especially when you use many apps, ram is already enough satured by TouchWiz and other proprietary ****ty processes.
Without root permissions you can remove very few things.
While important software upgrades (e.g. from Android 4.1.2 to 4.3) without a data wipe from recovery, are the first cause of lags.

I know the filters from CMs edit function but are you sure these samsung filters are there? I don't have a CM phone here so I can't test it. But as I remember they aren't. Or can you make a screenshot of those filters?
Of course the camera is only an app in a ROM but most stock camera apps can't be used in non-stock ROMs. If I could, I would install CM and install Samsungs or Sonys camera app.
And at last: I did some research for camera apps. Because I wanted to switch to CM too. But there is none which gets me the functions and filters in a user friendly way like the stock app does. But this is a different story.

She doesn't have many apps and I disabled and uninstalled everything she doesn't need. The lag is there and there seems to be no solution to fix it on non-rooted stock. And as told here, there might be no solution with rooted stock :/

Sadly in most of cases it's impossible.
For Samsung camera it's surely impossible due to the ****ing TouchWiz dependence, for Sony camera... may be a port I don't know, search about in XDA-Developers.

Then... you uninstalled "everything she doesn't need", but never Samsung bloatware, nor TouchWiz, because are undeletable without root permissions.
Therefore a Samsung rom without TouchWiz should be unstable and mainly unusable... almost all Samsung system things need TW.

AOSP roms do not have the superior image quality compared to touchwiz so keep that in mind. They look the same quality with Touchwiz in the camera app but after you take it, the quality becomes bad.

Ah ok, so your gf need to be persuaded... there are two way of full backup: Nandroid via recovery (with root) and "adb" via computer (without need to root).
I never used last method, so device must be rooted.
You have simply to flash CF-Root via Odin and be sure that latest Samsung drivers are installed in your PC.
Will be flashed also the SuperSU root manager... and a CWM recovery, which is all your gf need to backup [emoji41]
Boot in recovery and choose backup and restore voice by moving menu with volume keys and clicking with power button.
At least choose if you prefer internal or external memory: I don't know gf data, but almost 3-4 free GB are surely required.
When operation is completed, flash the coming CyanogenMod 11 M10 (some day and will be released, be patient! [emoji6]).
If she'll hate CM, a simple Nandroid restore by recovery... but note that device will be already rooted.
At this point I suggest your gf to switch to a custom Samsung rom, always better than the stock due to different many optimizations and updates provided by developer (prohibited by Samsung for rooted devices).
ARHD, Omega, Imperium, ArchiDroid (for a 4.4 rom ported from Note 2, may be less stable)... a great choice!
I hope I was exhaustive... and don't forget to tell your gf about the geek hero who have spent a lot of time for her [emoji6]
Have a good day

You are extreme about.
In 3 weeks of holiday I did lots of photos.
The only AOSP camera limits actually are the worst stabilization and potential banding in night photos, but with steady hand in favorable ambient conditions I obtained masterpieces.
Is true, as camera quality Samsung is "a bit" better, but speak about "bad quality" referred to AOSP, is a bull****.
I said enough, I can leave this topic... be careful not to ramble.

Is there any rom out there, that have a stock ICS people application, and all other features of samsung rom?
Questions go in the Q/A section Thread moved.
If I understand you correctly you`re looking for custom rom that looks like stock? So, Alliance base or VillainRom would be the answer
Yes I am looking for a custom rom, but i need the samsung camera with zero shutter lag, video calling support, and the ICS stock contatct application.

I know this doesn't exactly answer you, but if you want the interface looking like stock ICS then you should download Nova Launcher from the Play Store.
I prefer it over TouchWiz, especially after I'd got used to the ICS ROMs on my GT-I9000 over the last 6 months.
The only problem is some of the Samsung widgets don't work, some of them do but not all of them.
Strangely there are a couple of things I do prefer about Samsung's software though, including the calendar and contacts apps.
I have been using a rooted IncS for more than a year now and finally want to make the switch from HTC to Samsung. One of the biggest drawbacks for me when using a rooted IncS was that I had to use a Sense based ROM to maximise the my camera experience. I understand some .apk relating to the camera has not been released by HTC hence AOKP/ASOP ROMs are unable to offer the same camera experience as Sense ROM.
My question is whether the same restrictions apply to a Samsung phone and would I be required to use a touchwiz based rom to best utilise my camera? Or would I be able to get the same camera experience in AOKP/ASOP ROMs.
I did try looking for an answer but was unable to locate one. In the event I missed out on it and end of repeating this question I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

Unfortunately there's not one single AOSP/AOKP rom on the S3 that functions properly due to undocumented Exynos platform and partially working (or not working) hwcomposer. There are always glitches in the camera, when switching front to back and lack of support for modes that you have in stock firmwares like hdr, hires panorama mode etc. Stick to stock if you need your phone's full functionality. If you can live with some basic apps force closing try the newest CM10 nightly you shouldn't be too disappointed.
I just recently started using custom roms thanks to a friend of mine. I'm currently using Cyanogenmod, I believe the most recent one (flashed to the one released today) but I noticed a few things were missing. The biggest concern of mine is that I don't seem to have Google Now on my phone, and I seem to have lost S-Voice (which I assume Google Now replaces). Voice search also doesn't seem to be working either. Whenever I try using voice search, it immediately crashes. Lastly, I don't get 4g HSPA+ anymore. I'm not in an LTE area but we do get H+ here. I noticed that I am on 3g all the time. Just wondering if there were any fixes for these problems. Not a huge issue, just an inconvenience I'd like to see fixed if possible.

Cyanogenmod has a discussion thread in the general section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035141
you're best to go there and ask - but before you do, a quote from the cm10.1 thread you downloaded the rom from
- Camera: Recording effects broken
- Camera: Touch 2 focus issues with enabled flashlight
- Bluetooth: audio streaming sometimes becomes laggy or stops at a distance > 1m
- FM Radio: unsupported
- TV Out: unsupported, will never work (proprietary, undocumented)
- Lots of missing and yet unimplemented features
- and a lot more
these are known issues.
Actually we have two kind of roms. Based on Stock Samsung Rom and based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project). It isn't the same and AOSP roms mostly are missing much things added by Samsung, for example Smart Stay, Samsung Apps etc. CyanogenMod is based on AOSP.
If you ask me I'd stick with roms based on Samsung, mostly because I believe it's much more compatible than "clean" AOSP itself. But it's up to you, I'd suggest flashing some stock rom (f.e. Android Revolution HD) and make a decision which one you prefer.

I tried Viper rom and it was a little heavy themed for my liking. I love Vision X rom, he has a great rom. It is about stock with a lot of improvements and he is great at updating and improving little at a time with what we like in the rom. Being rooted you can debloat and keep what you want not having to search for what you want or need to place back in. You can always check them out and if you don't like them flash back to what you have, that being said make sure you make a backup before jumping to a new rom. Good luck, let us know what you go with and why this way others can read about it with the same questions.

I have tried it as well but was not a fan of it note sure off all the settings and I did not think it made a big difference to me. I use a audio mod/hack to get it louder for my lack of hearing ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2761053 ), I use the slightly more than normal and it works great, thanks to GamerOnOne. but if you are looking to improve quality a lot of the apps have at least a 5 stage equalizer that works great for general use. As well you have to have a kernel that supports that and you would have to look that up.

Yes. That app works great. Make sure you know who to set it up properly. You have to create Viper4Android folder on your INTERNAL SD card. Case sensitive. Then put kernel inside that folder. Again case sensitive. Just create the folders using your file explorer. Then download some irs packs to put inside the kernel folder. This will give you different sound optimizations. I recommend installing xhifi as well as it will give you better highs and mids. Enable it in system settings under sounds. If you install xhifi make sure you pick the last option on driver. Cortex w/neon or something like that. It's easy. Oh and enable expert ui in the viper options of the app to get all the sound options. The viper thread on xda has all the downloads for the apps and links to some free irs modules.

I'm not making a value statement on your mod, because I've used it and like it, but I'll try to explain why people like apps over mods...
For most users, mods are a lot more intimidating than apps. I'll make a list of the various things that would be intimidating:
Android Compatibility
Most mods inherently mess around with system files. That's typically why it's packaged as a mod and not an app. The problem with this is that the mod author has to test and document which android versions work with it (JB, KK, etc) as well as the various phone versions (Sprint vs. Verizon vs. AT&T vs. International). Also, will it work on AOSP and TW, or just one or the other? Unless the mod author is very clear (which most aren't), I won't install it.
ROM Compatibility
Similar to the previous one, there are tons of ROMs out there. Each ROM has it's own mods baked in. Various system files are changed and each ROM could have a different set-up, so when a Mod is installed, it could break other parts of the ROM. It's impractical to test out each Mod on each ROM for every possible negative interaction. So again, it leads to a lot of questions about compatibility. It's not the fault of the modders, but it's a barrier to users.
Mods are typically Permanent
Because Mods typically modify (or replace) system files, it makes it difficult to revert back to the ROM pre-mod. Yes, I always do a nandroid backup, but other users don't. I've been helping people on these forums for the past three years who have never backed up, so I can attest that non-backer-uppers are the majority. Most people don't want to take the 5-10 minutes (and 1.5-2.5 Gigs) it takes to backup before flashing anything. Anyways, I digress. Almost all mods do not provide a "revert back to stock" zip. The reason for this is because if they are replacing an already modified system file (from a ROM), then they can't provide a restore for it (unless they provide a restore zip for each ROM, which is impractical). In comparison, apps are typically easy to uninstall and don't mess around with system files (typically, that is)
Anyways, with all that said, your Mod post is very clear and has an easy solution to revert back to "stock" (instead of replacing the original file, rename it to a .bak file).
Your mod is, in my opinion, much easier to use than other ones I've seen on here, precisely for the reasons above. But for "causal" users, an app would still be more appealing.

One, it's for the sprint note 3.
Two, it's been tested with tw/stockish roms and works.
Still waiting to test for aosp.
Three, I recently posted up a stock volume to return to.
Four, no one should ever flash a daily without making a back up period. It's like Android law!
Five, there is no more replacing a file. I have made a easy to use flash in recovery file today.
Six, don't get me wrong I liked this app but it wasn't reaching the levels I want in some areas.
So to recap, a simple 2 minute back up, and no need to tweak with a app.

Where is Viper ROM? Can you please provide a link? I can't find it. Thanks.

I will give this a shot on my next day off. Thanks. I did notice today the volume mod has helped. When my notifications came through my ears piece it nearly blew my ear drums LoL.

Q&A for [ROM] [OFFICIAL] [5.0.2] [LS990] Dirty Unicorns v9.0
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [ROM] [OFFICIAL] [5.0.2] [LS990] Dirty Unicorns v9.0. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
xposed framework
I tried to install xposed framework but it wasn't compatible. How soon will we possibly see this becoming compatible?

Probably not for awhile, if at all. It isn't compatible with the ART runtime which is native on any 5.0 builds. If you want to run xposed you will have to go back to kitkat.

Thanks, what kitkat ROM do you recommended, I'm one of those people who likes sticking to one ROM rather then trying different ones.

It all depends on what you're looking for. If you want a close to stock experience, I'd suggest BarRin:

Depends on what you want out of your device. If you want stock experience you'd go the BarRin route. If you want aosp I'd go with Pac-Man or Vanir, those are my favorites. You really can't go wrong either route.
Every time I try to create and save a new contact, it saves the contact but then I get a popup that says contacts has stopped. Its weird, but the contact saves regardless...
Just thought I'd mention it. Other than that, this ROM is fantastic, have had no issues, even while using my g watch it never skips a beat!
Thanks!

You need to switch the SELinux from Enforcing to Permissive. Download SELinux Mode Changer from the play store, and it should work. It works on every Lollipop ROM I've tried.
Here's the stock LG G3 quick remote ported for AOSP http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/themes-apps/app-quickremote-port-aosp-t2929146
First, just wanna say i'm getting kinda annoyed with the whole "you have less than 10 posts" thing forcing you to come to this thread, which no one else will ever actually 'check on' because if their stuff is working, why check a Q/A thread? I have more than 10 posts but still shoves me here anyway...
Oh well.. anyway...
Real question is:
What works and what doesn't? Plain and simple. I read some 'nice' things about this ROM from the actual thread, but there isn't anything that states a "this works, this works, that works. this doesn't work, that doesn't work" kind of thing... Every other LP ROM I've tried, has broken NFC which KILLS battery life. Has broken Bluetooth that causes Kernel Panics every time you turn Bluetooth off before disconnecting your devices. And some have issues with music playback.
I'm not a person to just randomly trust my devices to some person/people who've created custom code and yet doesn't actually post what the code is, what it does, and what it doesn't do. Sure it has a change log that seems pretty expansive, but there is only ONE log on there... nothing to tell me what has been worked on and what hasn't, and what works and what doesn't. Not gonna flash a new ROM, losing all my settings that are just right atm (except a few that can't be saved at all cause they're broken), just to find out that the same problems still exist, either worse or the same.
Currently have the CM12 Unofficial installed and it has broken NFC, Bluetooth Kernel Panics all the time (gotten less though since the jan 5th update), random/sporadic volume spikes if using Bluetooth/Headphones and a phonecall comes in. and a few other issues.
But currently there's no way to actually tell what is going on with this ROM at all. only thing i've seen that has anything to do with what works and such is someone says something like "only thing Illusion was missing was Bluetooth, and this has it". So idk if that is to mean NFC and everything works, or if its just a generalized statement. Some people seem to be reporting playback issues with default media player and google's music player. some have issues with camera it seems. but only very few people are actually saying anything..

Every aosp rom is going to have the same issues. Bluetooth partially working, NFC isn't working, and some people report different issues that other people don't have. As well if you look at the day it was released there has only been one release of it so far so there is your answer to the log. It's pretty easy to make a nandroid and flash something else and if you don't like it or it is worse then then your last rom revert to your nandroid.
Also if you freeze NFC in titanium backup you won't have to worry about NFC draining battery. Other then that everything that is broken in any lollipop will be broken in the any bother lollipop roms.
As far as your post count it says you only have 5. Also the point of these threads are so people don't spam the DEVELOPMENT thread with known issues that have been repeated ten thousand times. Now granted some developers would rather not have a Q and A section but some do. We all had to abide by the same rules as you.
Also for the code if you go to their Gerrit you can check their source. If there code was bad Dirty Unicorns would be a hugely popular rom across multiple devices eg LG, HTC, Samsung, etc, etc.

Posted alot more than 5, but eh, maybe something was deleted somewhere and thus maybe takes away from total post count? idk. I understand the reason for a Q/A thread, it does make sense. what doesn't, is the need to have such a requirement for 10+ posts. what if someone actually had something to contribute to the 'development'? now they're stuck posting in here instead.
I know about DU from back when I used it as my daily driver for the Evo 3D, and it was amazing. But you can't judge the quality of a ROM based on a different device all together. Yes I know they make 'quality' ROMs, but still proper documentation should be done to let potential users know what's going on. Whether or not an issue is something that's common with all AOSP ROMs, it should still be listed because if its not, and they somehow had them working, then no one would know. and if they did get those things working and did post it, then we wouldn't have this issue in the first place.
the nandroid situation doesn't always fix things. i regularly use Torque with a highly customized layout for the cars me and my brother work on. even with a nandroid, you lose all the data and the layouts. you can export the data and layouts, but they dont import back in once the nandroid is restored for whatever reason. forcing a 3rd party app on a desktop or something to be able to access the data, and having to manually redo the layouts each time. and its not the only issue i've experienced with restoring from a nandroid.
Titanium Backup does solve the NFC issue, but it still drains the battery, though MUCH less than if it was unfrozen. But the issue there, is that unless its been changed, you must buy the full app to be able to freeze system processes and such. So knowing if it was already disabled by default from within the ROM, helps people know if they need to locate the NFC process and freeze it or not.
I really dont mean for any of my postings to sound dickish or 'finger pointing'. Just that information is key with everything. There is no real excuse for having lack of information about something when they know everything they've done to their 'product'. Many people's livelihoods rely on their mobile devices, so being able to know just what they're doing to their device is something to be taken quite seriously..

Have you looked into the multirom manager thread in the Android development section. Perhaps you should set that up if you haven't. It allows you to flash multiple roms and be able to select which one you want to load when you restart your phone. Granted you would lose you setup for cm12 but you can always set it up one more time. It would also allow to you flash roms and see what works for you and doesn't without losing anything. I currently run BarRin as my primary with 7 different roms for secondary roms. So when I Reboot my phone I have 8 different roms to select from without having to flash anything.

I've heard of multirom before, but it was forever ago and to be honest, didn't know that was actually what it did. Way I had understood it was that it just allowed you to easily install ROMs, not that it allowed you to boot into whichever one you wanted at boot up. That actually does sound kind of interesting. Might just check that out in a bit. Thanks for the link! =D

This might be a dumb question. But is Wi-Fi calling available in this ROM? I don't think it is but in hoping to be wrong.

Just a few comments here. I can relate to your frustration with these Q&A threads in that they are often full of questions and no answers. At least you got some good information in response to yours. I've seen threads with pages of questions and no replies. The devs, who would know best, almost never respond to these. Tesla, engine, and randompooka are the exceptions.
With regard to your final paragraph, I don't think your point about some people's reliance on their cell phones has merit. At best, these builds are works in progress. I thought it was understood that you put up with bugs in exchange for software advancements you can't get from your carrier. If I relied on my phone for my livelihood, I wouldn't root and flash custom roms, at least not until they were stable builds way down the road. I'd stay stock for now if I depended on them.
Personally, I'm thrilled with what we have after only a few months with a workaround bootloader. IMO, the exchange of custom roms for some unreliable features is a big win for me.
