Gear S or Gear 2? - Samsung Gear S

Hi Guys. I skipped both gear 1 and gear 2 but finally decided to buy a gear. What would you recommend. Should I look for Gear S or go for Gear 2?

curved screen and 2" looking nice

I would go with the Gear S. That curved screen looks amazing. I also like the build in Flesky Keyboard. I have the 1st gear with Null Rom and used the keyboard to reply to text messages using Tablet talk.

But the price will be higher than Gear 2

I'm totally in on the gear s as my first smart watch but my only concern is how much the data plan will be.

The Gear S is looking good for my first smart watch, although I really like the look of the moto 360..........circle watch with square interface though.........
decisions decisions..........

Have they released pricing and availability of the gear s?

I was in the same boat as you .. but the moment I saw the flat tyre "design" in the moto360 and the notifications/messages being cut off at the flat tyre portion ... that did it for me .. it's Gear S for sure ... the flat tyre is really an eye sore ..whoever at Motorola whom decided to allow the flat tyre design should be given the boot ..

I have the Gear 2 now I had the Gear 1 I want the Gear S but the lack of camera and IR blaster I think I'll stick with my Gear 2 a while longer many the Gear S2 will come in march with the S6 and include camera and IR blaster

Galaxy Gear or Pebble for Note 3?

I'm about to upgrade to the Note 3 and am seriously considering a smart watch for notifications as the many layers of protective clothing I have to wear will make getting the Note out a John Cleese scene.
I've been looking at 3, the Sony. The g g and the pebble. Obviously the hg is the one made specifically for this phone but I am baulking at the price which is an eye watering £250...about $400 US. No idea why Samsung UK have priced this so high. Might be cheaper in the Euro Zone.
I'm a wee bit cautious about the galaxy gear as mist reviews haven't been great and it looks a bit unadaptable for an android device, were the price lower I would probably go for it.
As I can get a pebble for half the price, and I've been really impressed at the 3rd party content etc. I'm leaning towards pebble + a plantronics pro headset rather than a gear with the guilt in **** Tracey speaker.
Is the galaxy gear as bad as all that?

The only downside ever to the Gear is that it only supports Galaxy devices - but you will be using a Note 3, so it's the better option.
HOWEVER, the Gear 2 is probably coming very, very soon.
Thanks, I might wait to see what the gear 2 looks like, after all if I get a pebble it will likely be the steel one and they recently launched here and costing top dollar.

Pebble. I myself is rocking a pebble with note 3 and it is excellent. Plus new appstore coming on Monday enables u to dl apps much easier. Gear has lousy battery life too...

The SmartQ Z-Watch is another option that I am looking at.
I also have been using my Pebble with my Note 3. Have you had any luck getting the one - handed operation to work when the phone is connected to the Pebble?

Looked at the Sony as well but the pebble does do them on price. I've got a few issues with the watch functionality of the gear. If I'm going to wear this rather than my Seiko sports military watch, a lovely automatic , it has to be able to tell you the time without having to be woken up.
The gear 2 if sold at this price point is probably out of contention for me, unless it is a significantly splendid gadget, I simply wouldn't spend 250 quid on a watch that will date in 18 months, far better to spend half that on a pebble, the sheer volume of 3rd party pebble apps is a good indicator of support, I don't see Sony getting there and like Sony's tablets and phones, its a well screwed together item let down by clunky oem skin and apps.

I am planning to get the Pebble in white to match my white note 3, the Pebble has a good battery life, the time is always displayed, and you can put any 22mm strap on it, if the strap breaks on the Gear, then you have had it, as it's not replaceable and it houses the camera.
Go for Gear, if you have come across this far to customise Note 3 you will never be disappointed if you drop by http://forum.xda-developers.com/smartwatch/samsung-galaxy-gear to do what others can not.
You can compare Peeble battery with Gear which only stand for 2 days but what about features and mods to browse Internet, games, gps, video chat it`s like comparing your old Nokia to your new Note 3 which the old Nokia can extend battery to one week compare to Note 3 for only 2 days.
Read the Gear threads to find parts not only strap.

Thanks. I'm reasonably confident at rooting phones, my current htc is rooted. I might read up the galaxy gear forum as you suggest. At the end if the day the issues I have apart from cost are the sort if issues you can fix by rooting which is why I did my HTC. I could always buy a second hand one off the bay and see how I get on. This would also negate having to wait for the gear 2 to come out. I drive an old jaguar and an old Citroen CX precisely because it is tried and tested technology and anything you can possibly have to face with either vehicle has been faced by others who have documented the fix.

Ok, plan will be to get a gear and root it to another theme that sorts some of the issues.
Neither. Try a Citizen Nighthawk for something similarly priced. Better yet try a Submariner or Seamaster.

go for gear. i've been using this about 1 week and i am happy with its speed, and battery is not so bad. fully compatible with note and elegant look than the others.
so go for it...
I think I gona wait until the galaxy gear 2 comes available in stores

Had the gear and returned it and got the pebble. The pebble is absolutely amazing. Week of battery. And the Tasker Integration brings the functionality of this watch to a whole new level.

I have the Gear, and I have rarely used it. It's not what I expected but it is a first attempt by Samsung, I am also considering swapping mine for a Pebble especially now the pebble store is going live soon.
Does either watch have a heavy duty 3rd party removable protective case eg like the trident ones for the 'phones? I have several restoration projects coming up that see me in workshops and building sites etc. I want the watch so the phone can live under my protective gear and I will use a platronics headset. I guess the pebble steel might be the toughest option. Can spotify and audible apps extension be mounted on the pebble?

Torn between the martian, the GG, and the sony2, and maybe even the quallcom TOQ. As for the gear, price is dropping, best buy is already down to 250. If it gets to 200 even, I'm getting it.

Just bought a nearly new Gear from eBay. I see that Pebbles are now down to 100 quid in the UK with 2nd hand decent ones coming in at 75. I might buy a pebble as well due to its waterproofing, I'm outside at work a lot in wet Scotland. But I might wait till the pebble steel becomes a bit more available, its the first 'normal' smart watch and the steel construction is a winner re protection

Gear 2 vs Gear Fit

I cannot seem to find any forums for the new gear 2 and am looking for a companion for my SM-G900F.
Is there anything the Fit can do that the gear 2 can't?
Samsung mentions the fit can also track sleep, but did not deny that the gear 2 cannot.
who has any of these devices and can advice me further?
My Gear 2 Neo will be here Tuesday, but basically the difference in Gear 2 and the Fit is that you cannot develop apps for the Fit. Samsung has released an SDK for the Gear 2 so developers can create apps for the Gear 2. The other difference is Gear 2 has a camera on it, Gear 2 Neo doesn't, nor does the Fit.

You have to realise that the Gear Fit is running a RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) for more accurate measurements and less battery use. The Gear Fit is not intended to be a smartwatch like the Gear 2 or Gear 2 Neo, but more like a fitness band (with some extra functions though).
If you truly want a nice smartwatch (like I do) I suggest you wait to see what LG and Moto 360 have to offer later this year.
At any rate, I'm still going to buy the Gear Fit because of it's awesome fitness tracking abilities and neat design.

I've been wearing mine since about 1pm yesterday. It looks and feels great on my wrist. I didn't have the G1, so I can't compare it. It has a faint vibration when it's alerting you. Every text, call or email..well you can set it to alert you for any app you have installed. I found that "Alarm clock plus" does not alert. I set the stock clock alarm and it even comes across the phone and acts as an alarm to wake you.
What I have done is turn the volume down pretty low on my phone, so i don't hear it as easily when something happens, since I am getting notified by the watch. There are limited watch faces and no app to create your own like on the G1.
The biggest dislike is you cannot turn the camera shutter sound off and it's louder than my phone. No spy photo taking is possible at all.
The Plesky keyboard is not available yet, so you can only respond to texts using templates that you create in Gear manager. I added like 6 more than stock to satisfy my situations.
The battery life seems great so far. There's a motion wake setting that will make the screen come on every time you move your wrist. It was cool at first and then I thought about battery life considering I move my arm 1000 times a day and there was no need for the watch to come on every time. I turned that off and now I have to hit the button to have it come on or it does on it's own if it's getting an alert.
I made one test call and the speaker is nice and loud. The person I was talking to said I sounded clear. I was indoors. Didn't test outside. The screen is pretty visible outside in sunlight.
The S Health pedometer automatically syncs to your phone.
Overall, I am satisfied with it. Not sure what more you would get from something like the Moto360 or than directions.
Hope that helps. Ask me specific questions and I'll answer.

well i was thinking of getting a neo so the camera won't matter to me
anyways, does the watch store data on itself, like if i go for a run/walk without my phone, does it sync to my s5 after i come back within range. (something like a fitbit)
oh and does it get as hot as the s5? and i tried to google plesky keyboard, but didnt get any results, is that some small keyb for the watch?

Anyways, it doesn't get hot at all. Feels like a normal watch. As for the walking, you can set the sync intervals. I have mine set to sync every three hours, which is the soonest. You can also hit sync and do it right away.

lol no wonder i couldn't find it.
thats good i guess. i will most likely comment after i get my neo this friday.
Sorry, needed more time to give some feedback. I also have not had a G1.
I have a Neo and it feels great on my wrist. Build quality is good and doesn't feel cheapy and looks good. I love that it integrates with music from my phone like Google Music, so I can change tracks or see what track is playing, adjust volume, etc.it works great and syncs very well with my phone. Battery life is great. I used it pretty heavily and dropped about 30% in a day. Answered a call on my Gear2 and talked to my wife while I was sitting on the couch and it sounded so good she thought I was on the phone - not the gear2. Very loud and clear! My biggest use is for email viewing. I get a ton of emails cause of my work and its really nice to be able to check them on my watch without always bringing my phone out of my pocket all of them time.
Downsides:
-As mentioned, no keyboard for it yet, so it just has template responses or s voice or emoji.
-Pedometer syncs with phone, but doesn't combine with phone - it keeps a separate counter for each device. I was hoping it would just stay in sync with my phone for a total number, but it appears to keep them separate, so I will just use my phone and not the Gear2 pedometer, oh well.
I am excited to see what apps get made for it, but really the device itself is really great for the money IMO. Anything more to it and it's just icing on the cake.

well, after my exams i can probably mess with the tizen sdk. and after i get my device lol
I really wish you could set a Flag status from the Gear 2 since it marks emails as read, that way I would remember to follow-up with someone if I view the email when I'm not able to respond.

[Q] What's the Gear Fit like?

I'm interested to know what the Gear Fit is like. I currently have the Gear 2, but this looks pretty good and I'm thinking about purchasing it. Would you say the Gear Fit is as good as the Gear 2 or are they completely different?
Thanks!

Different.
Gear fit doesn't have camera, no direct replying of calls from the watch, no standalone music player, no speakers, no IR blaster.
Both have the usual fitness features, timer and stopwatch features, and notification access on the watch.

i think the gear fit has everything you need and is not as bulky as the gear 2..much better battery life and it's cheaper too. :good:
but they are very different indeed the fit is more like a fitness tracker with smartwatch features xD
hello folks!!
i wanna buy a galaxy gear fit.
i loved all the features!
but i read a lot of complaints like no after sales support from samsung ,infinite boot looping gear fits, dead after a few months etc.
this scared the crap out of me!
im investing almost 10K INR roughly 170$ which is a huge amount for me!
so id like some valid reviews please!
you're insights shall influence my final purchase!
P.S i own a samsung galaxy S5.

Gear Fit 2?

I want to get a fitness tracker and am leaning Samsung since I have an S6 Edge. I've seen mixed reviews on the Gear Fit so I'm wondering if I should wait for a newer version. I'd rather have a device that's not so much a watch since I won't be going without a real watch. I've had the FitBit Force and Charge HR.
Should I wait for a Gear Fit 2? Is there an updated Gear Fit coming out soon?
I think the fit 2, whatever it ends up being, will be much less with less features. I love my fit. Granted I use it more for the notifications than a fit device, but i think it does well in most areas as a cheaper fit device. Plus the integration with a Samsung device is nice. I got mine refurbed from an online retailer for under $50. It's a great wearable for someone who doesn't want to talk into their watch. If you want to get into the wearable game cheap to see if you'll like it this is the way to go.

Gear S vs S2?

Anyone own both?
I'm torn between which one to keep.
Gear S:
Pros
-Bigger screen
-Looks futuristic
-Curved glass
-Loud speaker
-Durable
Cons:
-A bit big for my girl baby wrist
-Gets sweaty when running
-Occasional hiccups aka lag
-You know you have it on. Typing on your computer's keyboard with it on for long bouts is annoying
-Charging cradle blows
Gear S2 3G
(Some pros are also cons imo)
Pros:
-Sleek
-Rotating bezel
-Possible Samsung Pay (last Q of 2016)
-More responsive
-Charging wirelessly is bause
-More than one button
-Clearer speaker
Cons
-Speaker isn't as loud
-Looks cheap
-Band looks cheap
-The rotating bezel should've had some ridges on them for a better tackle feel while turning. It slips a ton. I end up just using the swiping feature the most.
-Lay out isn't as great for notifications as on the Solo imo
-Maybe too many input functions? Rotating bezel, swiping and the buttons? Can't really input with the bezel, you have to touch the screen anyways so meh.
-Looks like a toy watch (except when the screen is on).
-Maybe not as bright as the solo?
I'm leaning towards the Gear S.
Input?
:ghosttown:
I would choose the gear S.

I also have the Gear S2 3G but I still like the Gear S better!!!!
I have both and I like the S better. The S2 is great, but the S can be rooted, unlocked, and themed with custom icons and sounds(At least the T-mo version). Plus it's more comfortable on my wrist and is has more app options, Opera works on it but isn't available for the S2.
I'm honestly thinking about selling my S2.
Lasted 5 days with my Gear S2. It's not an upgrade from the Gear S I felt I lost more than I gained. The way i see it, the gear S2 is perfect for 1st time smartwatch buyers but not for people like some of us who've had other versions of the gear in the past. Especially the gear S. The only thing I liked about the s2 is that I could see the album art for play music whereas I can't see it on the gear s, even after the latest update which sucks but it is samsung.
