More then likely, the VPN is detecting the tethering connection causing it to try to encrypt that as well as the actual data connection.
I take it you're using an app to establish a connection to the VPN? try using the native VPN connection inside android. I have used a VPN with tethering before and I believe that was my setup.

You will need to get the server destination address and other information from your VPN client.

Hey if I was to use wifi tethering app from the market for rooted devices then a vpn app set up would work right? I just need to use the built-in vpn setup when using my native wifi hotspot? I that right. Thanks.

Nope. You need the built-in VPN setup any time you tether. Whats happening is the VPN App is detecting the WiFi connection and you data connection as being "internet connections" therefore it tries to encrypt the WiFi and Data connections double encrypting the data. Or, its not sure what network to port the data through. Using the built-in VPN setup only allows the data connection to be "VPNed"
I used to use WiFi Tether For Root Users on my S4 but still had troubles with VPN until I manually set up the VPN in android.

Shouldn't be too hard. Just contact your VPN service provider, and ask them for the specific connection options you need. For instance, I know Private Internet Access allows you to connect without using their app. They have a webpage setup that has all the info you need depending which server you wish to connect to

Good tether app?

Any one found a good internet tethering app? It can be wireless or usb, both would be good. I'm rooted. I've seena few apis on the market but wondered if anyone had a good one they would recommend

not tested it extensively though
Thanks, I'll check it out

Yeah Barnacle works. I tried a few others which didn't. On my 2.1 streak many reported no netfilter in the kernel and wouldn't run, but Barnacle worked fine.
Many thanks I checked it out. Unfortunately it does not do usb. I have pcs without wireless.
Don't want to use PDAnet, I might get a bluetooth dongle and use the barnacle app.

Get a wifi dongle, faster, more reliable, and can be had for about $10 (USD) if you poke around.
And +1 for Barnacle Legacy wifi - works great, perfect price!
any word on a usb tethering application yet?
I've tried the few that I worked with before and they all claim that there is no kernel support. Barnacle works great for wifi, but I tether my laptop from work and since I can't turn off SSID broadcast I would rather not have network security poking around asking where a rogue WAP came from.
Thanks ahead of time.

I am using EasyTether right now while I am waiting for my home internet to be connected. Ive managed to get through many Gb of data (sorry phone provider). It is free but if you dont pay for it then you wont be able to access https:// sites after a while.

Would Barnacle allow the streak to connect to a home network? I've tried to use it but it only seems to use WEP encryption and I'd need it to use WPA.

Barnacle is for sharing your 3G connection over wifi, not connecting to wifi. The Streak should connect to your wifi with wpa just fine.
Barnacle seems to be blocked by AT&T so I can't get to in through the app store. Anyone have a link directly to the sdk??

Yes the Streak connects to the router but I wanted to be able to access the nas on my home network from the Streak, hoped Barnacle would facilitate that.
Thanks for the link! Was wondering why I could not find it...
Which version of Barnacle is recommended? There are two files there. And does one need root for this to work?
Thanks!
Bbarnacle does require your phone to be rooted. The two files might be two different update versions or for different android OS's (1.6, 2.1, etc.)
Barnacle providing only local access. aka no internet
Can someone help me to get my barnacle app working? I have a rooted Dell Streak running 1.6 US. The app connects to my laptop fine but it only allows local access. I tried looking through the FAQ and settings in the app but I can't find anything that would fix the issue.

[Q] make telephone think its connected to Wi-fi while using 3g data

hi...i usually connect my lg optimus 2x to PC with USB and use computer's internet connection (reverse USB teethering). but i want to know if its possible to force telephone that it thinks that it is connected to wi-fi, while using 3g data connection. i want use that especially when games want to download data over the wifi...
If your device is rooted, you could get a wireless hotspot app from the market, start the hotspot on your phone, then connect to it (connect your device to itself ).
I don't think you can connect to your own hotspot.

tried but its not working..i think that androids dont support wifi multitasking like iphones do,so they cant receiving and teethering connection at the same time..

Actually you can. I've said that before to other people who wanted to download gameloft data and for some other purposes which require wifi, and it worked.
I want to do this too.... but the Mobile Hotspot app on my phone turns off WiFi if it is one, and if I turn on Wifi while Mobile Hotpsot is on, it disables the Hotspot.
Any other solution ? An app maybe ? A tweak ?
what wifi hotspot app was used?.. and to the OP, how did you reverse tether via usb?

How? I've been searching for a workaround to this for some time now.
Please tell me how...
I have a rooted Bionic, Eclipse ICS 4.0.4. I use FoxFi Full version for my hotspot. I need my phone to connect to the mobile hotspot it's currently transmitting. (I think that's what I need)
Why? I want an advanced ability to monitor who is using my mobile hotspot, using DroidSheep to monitor what they're using the connection for. Trouble is, DroidSheep (And al similar programs) only work if the phone (with the app) is actually connected to the wifi network. It won't work if it's the one transmitting the signal.

Both together isn't possible.

Best regards

i never relied on inbuilt tether function. i always used this
its pretty easy to setup & no rooting is required. till now i used with almost every kind of android version & with tablets also.
Easiest method I've found is to set up a wifi hotspot with the phone and use that.. No cable required!

Doesn't that suck battery like hell on both devices?
You can use the wifi tether to share the connection. It is really easy to set up and no cable is required. The drawback is that it causes heavy battery drain. USB tether is also working fine. You will need cable to do it but this way you can even charge your battery while browsing. See what works better for you and use it.
My network prohibits tethering, but branded .62 has the feature inbuilt. So the question is, can they detect it?
You might want to consider the huawei e586 wifi hotspot. It can support 5 devices on wifi. Just add your 3g data sim card.
i have the concept of wifi hotspot (sharing the mobile data via WiFi), but it is different from tethering. The only way to get WiFi tether is to use apps that require root access?
Thanks!

for the tethering i should use this APN: web.vodafone.it
using the smartphone as hotspot wi-fi it not goes to "web.vodafone.it" but through "mobile.vodafone.it" only sharing the smartphone’s normal network
i notice this since with mobile.vodafone.it i pay 0,30€/100mb

Yes, you need a PC running all the time as a VPN server. PPTP is the most easiest to get it working but it's blocked by companies all the time so you will never able to connect from your office to home. I use OpenVPN where it supports encryption and you can configure the port you like to use but not just PPTP. Using 443 or any other secured ports are preferred.
Here is a good guide I found to setup OpenVPN.

Correct, the idea is to VPN from your phone back to your home PC to make your phone or the FIOS Mobile app think you are still at home. That's why you need VPN.
You need:
1. Port forwarding from your router to your PC running OpenVPN as VPN server.
2. OpenVPN app installed on your phone.
3. FIOS Mobile app
4. VPN from your phone back to your home, redirect all traffic back to home and obtain an IP from your home.
5. Run FIOS Mobile app. If VPN is working properly, you will see all available live channels, if not, you will only see a few one and there is a warning message telling you that you can view more channels at home.
That's it and enjoy your TV anywhere.
PPTP is much easier because by default it routes all traffic back to your home and the FIOS Mobile app should work fine.

Check Windows Firewall service if it's running as well. Also a quick note to that PPTP uses IP protocol 47 (GRE) as well. Just opening port 1723 will not be enough. GRE is not tcp/udp but it's an IP protocol. Just FYI.
Windows Vista supports PPTP server as well.

I have Verizon FIOS router as well and it's a pretty old one.
It should be at Firewall Settings --> Port Forwarding --> Find or type the IP of your PC and select "Application to forward" --> pick PPTP
Save, and you should see a rule something like this.
PPTP
TCP Any -> 1723
GRE

I have had no luck trying to get my vpn to work on my g3. It will connect and run but after a minute or so I will be unable to download or upload any data. I use a paid vpn with unlimited bandwidth so the server isn't the problem. Its client side. It doesn't work from the app from the provider or manually from settings.
Does anyone know ofbany workarounds. The compression usually gives me moderately better speeds and I pay $30 a year for this service and I am now unable to use it.
Any help appreciated.

Try Cisco's Anyconnect. It's free. It works on my Nexus 7 and my G3.
In general, you don't need to connect through a third party app as android has a built-in VPN client. So try to use the built-in one and if you still face the stability problem, switch the protocols from pptp to l2tp or vice versa.
Also, make sure the network router/firewall permits GRE protocol 47 (You will want to find and enable a "PPTP passthrough" feature on your router that knows how to handle the GRE packets). In fact both port 1723 and GRE protocol shoyld be opened/enabled to establish VPN connectivity by using PPTP.
Hope it could solve the problem.
