dont know about the price but unlocking is free from the android market.
Just got back to the states from Hyderabad. Off contract expect to pay 650$ or about 32500 rupees. You can get one used for around 400$ to 450$. You can unlock the phone yourself and the phone works fine with vodaphone.

I would strongly recommend the I9100 in India - you will get warranty support for it, won't have to bother with unlocking, and you won't have to deal with carrier-mangling of firmware. Carrier-mangling has largely been neutralized for Gingerbread, but ICS is completely unknown.
He has a good point. The off contract price for the US version is about the same for the international version in India anyhow. Any particular reason you are looking for the AT&T version?

Thanks for reply guys. but on at&t site price is 150$ with contract.!!!! so after buying tht cell i can unlock it. is it ok or i shd buy from india ?
The 2 year on contract price will require a credit check and a US address for billing.

But what if i buy from us citizen & then unlock the same in india. ?
I do brokerage for US customs for imports.....I know the phone would require an FCC form. I'm not sure if India customs would require it because I don't do exports but its possible. Just a thought

The device is $550 without contract for a US-only warranty - no sane person is going to waste their contract subsidy (which comes along only once every 18-24 months) on giving you their $400 discount.
hey Terrold thanks for reply man. help me out man. please do some inquiry for me. as i am newbie for all this stuff. & if its possible to get the cell with contract & then unlock it & use d same in india. then explain how one can do tht. any help would be appreciated.

It's possible, but then you will be committed to paying for AT&T service which you won't be using.
That's the idea of the contract discount - AT&T gives you a $400 discount on the device, in exchange for being guaranteed that you will pay for their voice AND data service for two years.
This will cost you FAR more than paying full off-contract price. As an example, my total service bills come to $70/month or so after taxes - that is INCLUDING a pre-tax 25% discount on service I get through my employer.

It is cheaper to get an unlocked version. 2year contracts are expensive, that's why at&t can afford to sell it at discounted price.

get the gt-i9100.. you'll get updates quicker, and won't have to worry about all that shipping stuff. plus it won't be loaded with at&t's s*itware
Tons & tons thanks guys.
So basically you want someone in the US to get the phone on contract, and sell you the phone for $150, while they continue to pay the bill? Seems legit...

I don't think he understood that this is what would have to happen for him to get the device for $150.
Ok dud. My brother brought me a SGH-i777 just a week bfor..I stay in B'lore. Listen. There are 3 ways to buy it.
1st: With 2 years contract for approx $150 which I suggest you not to go with.
2nd:With NO CONTRACT(The phone will still be locked to AT&T) for approx $490...which my brother went for and is best way to go with.
3rd: Is to buy an unlocked SGH-i777 on Amazon or any other website which can be trusted..This too is an good option.
I chose 2nd option and hav unlocked it free by rooting it with Odin 1.85(App which is used for rooting) and by downloading Galaxy S Unlock app by Helroz which is available on Android Market for free..and u can root+unlock it perfectly within 10 mins..yes 10 mins or even less. Its damn easy procedure and you will get the rooting+unlocking guide. MAKE SURE YOU READ IT CORRECTLY. Here's the link:

Now I have provided you with every bit of info you needed. TC
You could get the att contract and then just freeze your account. You'll only be paying about 10 dollars a month. I do it when I go overseas for extended periods of time, since I work for a cruise line.

I live in Brazil, and a relative of mine is going to the US and I'm eager to get this phone.
I wonder if i can get it off Contract and Unlocked, or just simply off contract since i believe Unlocking it won't take long.
And i'm wondering if it will go for U$500 or close to it.
599 USD off contract but i dont know if is unlocked
I am in same situation.
On Verizon site is clear like cristal, 599 USD off contract
But i dont know if is unlocked too...and for me that is a real ****, cause i dont know how to unlock the beast so i need an answer, like u 2!
I am in the same situation, 'cause I'm italian...but I really, really want this phone, is absolutely amazing!

they should, i have bought many a phone from them in store and just told the sales rep to leave it boxed i will activate it at home. did have one try to tell me that they had to activate it before it could leave the store, so i just told them it was a gift. (which that one actually was)
Yes , looks like it is GSM unlocked , but dont forget those phones were all pre release models & the actual ones that come out on 21st may not have GSM Unlocked. I hope it is unlocked though
Only time will tell !
32GB - 599.99
64GB - 649.99
It's up on the ATT site now.
This makes me sad, i was really hoping for $550
checked att website pre-order your pricing is right but when check out it still ask for what plan to add? why is that?
So what exactly would be the benefit of buying the no-contract model from AT&T vs. buying the Developer Edition from HTC?
Obviously, none?
Maybe there are some crazy people who want the ATT model, not the unlocked Developer edition one?

I am paying full price, and am opting for the AT&T model over the developer version. Why? One word- SUPPORT. If there is any issue with the phone, I bring it in to AT&T and have them swap it out. Can't do that if I order the dev version from HTC. I had to swap my One X out something like 5 times. The peace of mind is worth dealing with a temporarily locked down phone.
you guys shouldn't complain, the phone costs the equivalent of 840USD here in France, probably many other European countries as well... and that's the 32gb version
Wish i could get one from the US man

Precisely! Besides, we'll have root soon enough given this crowd.
Talking tap from dis here brainy fone!
Being Canadian, I won't have easy access to the Dev version unless I can find one "reasonably priced" on eBay or CL (that isn't fraudulent!). Conversely, I can drive 90 minutes south to an AT&T store and get the AT&T version.
For the sake of clarity, Canadians do have access to the HTC One from at least 2 local carriers, but it's only the 32GB version at this point.
Price seems a bit high. I'm not eligible for an upgrade, but I could switch carriers to Verizon if they get the phone, pay the ETF fee, and still probably come out cheaper.

Same here. Was really disappointed to see the price. It's $60-70 more than I was expecting to spend (after tax). Well, I'm selling my iPhone 5 with accessories for $580, so it shouldn't hurt my wallet much.

ha! That's what I'm doing too, I'm going to unlock mine and sell it with a White/Green Otterbox Defender for $550+ I just got it this week so I could sell it for the One, and the $100 from the HTC Trade-In would still give me a few dollars profit, and if I can score a HD Media Link then I can eBay that junk for $70 and buy a box of Magic The Gathering Cards 8)
How are you guys disappointed by the price? Considering that I paid $850 for my piece of junk 64gb iPhone 5, I think $650 for a BADASS 64gb HTC phone is quite the steal. I was expecting it to be $100 more and was quite surprised when I saw it was only $650. Happy day for me!

Media Link is for 2 year contracts only. Also, when is the Dev edition supposed to allow a pre-order?
I'm buying a phone for the wife to replace an aging and dying Droid X. Will be purchasing at full retail to keep my current Nationwide 450 with Unlimited Data plan.
Having trouble deciding whether to purchase the 16GB Developer Edition from Samsung ($650) or purchase the 32GB from Verizon for only $50 more ($700). Also, since this is off contract, is it even worthwhile to consider purchasing the 16GB from Verizon for the warranty?
I'm going to want to tether so I suppose I'll need root access. Wife has not yet needed a SD card but with the limited storage on the 16GB I'm going to have to install one. With 32GB I don't think I'll need to purchase a memory card.
I would appreciate your opinions! What's the best investment when purchasing at full retail?
If I were you I would go with the dev edition. The only compelling reason to buy from VZW would be if you 'must have' their insurance. If you buy from Samsung, you can still get Square Trade and save yourself a bunch of money in the long run. The main difference is Verizon covers loss/theft.
Anyway, in practice there won't be a whole lot of difference unless the Verizon version gets locked down with an OTA at some point.

I would go with the 32gb from Verizon. You don't need to root to tether there are apps that can tether without root. And if something is wrong then Verizon will replace the phone faster then Samsung

The Dev edition just went on sale, so even if people have gotten their units there can't be much experience to draw from yet. That is also something to consider, there will be very few people with the dev edition compared to the Verizon version. If that concerns you, then it could be the deciding factor for you.

Understood! I just got my Dev Edition today and root failed based on that method posted. I only ran Motochopper and though it said it was successful and installed SuperSu, it could not install binary.
There must be another method.
Now, if I did the full method by exchanging the kernels, wouldn't that really give me a locked bootloader instead of the unlocked bootloader?
Any and all advice is appreciated.
My phone states:
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-562219 dated May 15th
Build Number: JDQ439.I545OYUAMDK
Baseband: I545OYUAMDK
Google Wallet
Does the developer edition have Google Wallet enabled?
I can tell you how to upgrade a line and keep unlimited data. I just got the S4 on VZW and still have unlimited data.
I'd get the dev edition as you could still install tw roms. Theres no sense not to get the dev if paying full price.

You can buy the phone from T-Mobile without a contract but you do need a plan.
Just talk to a different person imo.
If all else fails you can purchase it with a cheap pay as you go plan.
The cheapest I think is $3 for 30 min.
You however will have quite a few hurdles to jump through to get it unlocked from T mobile.
They require at least $100 to be spent on your account and 40 days of active service to unlock it.
You can get around those if you are lucky, some people have not been able to.
If you can do without warranty, your best option may be to use a service like swappa.com
You can buy new and used phones from people there.
Just make sure to check the condition of the phones before purchasing, also note if they are unlocked or not if you will be using a service other than T mobile.
If you must have a warranty of some kind, there are after purchase options available from places like squaretrade, however they are more expensive than I personally think they are worth.
Good luck finding your new phone.
You sure can buy it outright.

@L0x -- any luck??
I got mine from AT&T right after the release. I spent a bunch of time on various chats until I got someone who told me that I could get the phone unlocked within 3 to 5 days after purchase. Added to cart with the cheapest plan & ordered.
AT&T auto-activated the phone when it showed delivered. As I am using the phone in Europe on Vodafone, this was a problem. It took, all said and done, probably 8 hours across a month and a half on chat, twitter, and phone calls to get AT&T to send me the unlock code, cancel the plan, and wipe the account balance to zero. Unlock code was immediate, the rest took the longest. I didn't mind harassing them very much because I had my unlocked phone.
After it was all said and done, I have the AT&T variant with an unlock code, running on Vodafone, with nothing paid to AT&T except the cost of the phone. It takes time, persistence, and patience to make it happen.

Not yet per say. I'm about 2 weeks out from purchasing. Holiday kicked my ass. But I will update this thread when I purchase. I'm weighing right now actually going with a Tmobile plan. I use Metropcs right now. Just not liking the 20$ more a month for less data.
