I'm buying a phone for the wife to replace an aging and dying Droid X. Will be purchasing at full retail to keep my current Nationwide 450 with Unlimited Data plan.
Having trouble deciding whether to purchase the 16GB Developer Edition from Samsung ($650) or purchase the 32GB from Verizon for only $50 more ($700). Also, since this is off contract, is it even worthwhile to consider purchasing the 16GB from Verizon for the warranty?
I'm going to want to tether so I suppose I'll need root access. Wife has not yet needed a SD card but with the limited storage on the 16GB I'm going to have to install one. With 32GB I don't think I'll need to purchase a memory card.
I would appreciate your opinions! What's the best investment when purchasing at full retail?
If I were you I would go with the dev edition. The only compelling reason to buy from VZW would be if you 'must have' their insurance. If you buy from Samsung, you can still get Square Trade and save yourself a bunch of money in the long run. The main difference is Verizon covers loss/theft.
Anyway, in practice there won't be a whole lot of difference unless the Verizon version gets locked down with an OTA at some point.

I would go with the 32gb from Verizon. You don't need to root to tether there are apps that can tether without root. And if something is wrong then Verizon will replace the phone faster then Samsung

The Dev edition just went on sale, so even if people have gotten their units there can't be much experience to draw from yet. That is also something to consider, there will be very few people with the dev edition compared to the Verizon version. If that concerns you, then it could be the deciding factor for you.

Understood! I just got my Dev Edition today and root failed based on that method posted. I only ran Motochopper and though it said it was successful and installed SuperSu, it could not install binary.
There must be another method.
Now, if I did the full method by exchanging the kernels, wouldn't that really give me a locked bootloader instead of the unlocked bootloader?
Any and all advice is appreciated.
My phone states:
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-562219 dated May 15th
Build Number: JDQ439.I545OYUAMDK
Baseband: I545OYUAMDK
Google Wallet
Does the developer edition have Google Wallet enabled?
I can tell you how to upgrade a line and keep unlimited data. I just got the S4 on VZW and still have unlimited data.
I'd get the dev edition as you could still install tw roms. Theres no sense not to get the dev if paying full price.

checked att website pre-order your pricing is right but when check out it still ask for what plan to add? why is that?
So what exactly would be the benefit of buying the no-contract model from AT&T vs. buying the Developer Edition from HTC?
Obviously, none?
Maybe there are some crazy people who want the ATT model, not the unlocked Developer edition one?

I am paying full price, and am opting for the AT&T model over the developer version. Why? One word- SUPPORT. If there is any issue with the phone, I bring it in to AT&T and have them swap it out. Can't do that if I order the dev version from HTC. I had to swap my One X out something like 5 times. The peace of mind is worth dealing with a temporarily locked down phone.
you guys shouldn't complain, the phone costs the equivalent of 840USD here in France, probably many other European countries as well... and that's the 32gb version
Wish i could get one from the US man

Precisely! Besides, we'll have root soon enough given this crowd.
Talking tap from dis here brainy fone!
Being Canadian, I won't have easy access to the Dev version unless I can find one "reasonably priced" on eBay or CL (that isn't fraudulent!). Conversely, I can drive 90 minutes south to an AT&T store and get the AT&T version.
For the sake of clarity, Canadians do have access to the HTC One from at least 2 local carriers, but it's only the 32GB version at this point.
Price seems a bit high. I'm not eligible for an upgrade, but I could switch carriers to Verizon if they get the phone, pay the ETF fee, and still probably come out cheaper.

Same here. Was really disappointed to see the price. It's $60-70 more than I was expecting to spend (after tax). Well, I'm selling my iPhone 5 with accessories for $580, so it shouldn't hurt my wallet much.

ha! That's what I'm doing too, I'm going to unlock mine and sell it with a White/Green Otterbox Defender for $550+ I just got it this week so I could sell it for the One, and the $100 from the HTC Trade-In would still give me a few dollars profit, and if I can score a HD Media Link then I can eBay that junk for $70 and buy a box of Magic The Gathering Cards 8)
How are you guys disappointed by the price? Considering that I paid $850 for my piece of junk 64gb iPhone 5, I think $650 for a BADASS 64gb HTC phone is quite the steal. I was expecting it to be $100 more and was quite surprised when I saw it was only $650. Happy day for me!

Hey guys. I've been tossing an idea around in my head for getting my hands on a One Developer Edition (currently sold out on HTC.com).
I have an upgrade ready on May 1, 2013... just a week away. I want to stick with AT&T and their LTE network.
My idea is to get a brand new phone using my upgrade and turn around and sell it on ebay as a brand new, never used phone and put THAT money toward a developer ed. One.
- I assume the best money I can get with my upgrade is with the 16 GB iPhone 5. Most recent sell of a brand new i5 was $515.00. Would you guys assume this is the best money I can get from my upgrade?
Total comes to -$200 (iPhone5), +$515 (sell on ebay), -$650.00 (HTC One dev.) = $335.00 HTC One Dev.
Does this sound like a good plan? Would you guys know of a better way to turn my upgrade in to cash
I'm in the same boat.
Buying and flipping an IPhone 5 will bring you the best return. Especially if you can get it unlocked before you sell it. That said, if you're burning an upgrade anyway, and sticking with AT&T, I'd suggest just buying the subsidized 64 gb. It's the same phone as the development edition and will cost the same without the hassle of dealing with eBay.

Hey thanks for the info gunnyman. I had no idea the AT&T 64 gb was bootloader unlocked and unbranded. Cool.
It's not. But unlocking on HTC dev and rooting and romming gives you the same end result.
If the bootloader was not unlock able on the att phone I could see spending the money on the dev phone.

I guess I can use my car keys to scratch off that AT&T logo kidding...
I'll keep the idea in mind though. It looks like the 64 gb would be 50 bucks cheaper than going with my plan above. My only thought is that HTC might push updates quicker through their own channels than AT&T, if I wanted to stay with the factory image for some reason.
I just went to htctradeup.com and it says I can get $150.00 back for an old iPhone 4 32 gb. So next week I'll order the 64gb HTC One as an upgrade for 299.00 and then I'll get $150 back from HTC!
Guys can you tell me if this is worth the trouble. I recently signed up for AT&T service along with this fine phone that has zero flaws. But now I find myself interested in the developers edition. I know I could sell this phone on ebay for the same price I could get the developers edition but my question is, is really worth the hassle? My phone is already unlocked and I know its not the same as having S-off which I believe is the only difference between the AT&T version and developers edition. So is that phone really worth all the hassle?

The dev is the same as the AT&T version plus we have unlocked bootloader and rooting method for our version of the One. Save you're money and spend $200 - $300 on a nice AT&T one.

The downside to the dev edition is that for any warranty issues you have to go through HTC and they flat out suck!
I had an international One X that needed replacement and I had to mail it to HTC. They had it 2 weeks and mailed it back with the exact same problem. Sent it to them again and they finally sent a replacement device. Total time was over 4 weeks to simply get a replacement.
Never again!
I paid full price for my AT&T One and will never buy another device again that needs to be sent directly to HTC. At least with AT&T they send you a replacement right away and you mail back the defective one after you get the replacement in the mail.
If you are okay dealing with HTC and their horrible replacement / exchange policy then the dev version is fine. Beware they will NOT send you a replacement 1st and wait for you to return the defective device.
With HTC you mail it to them. They inspect it and see if they can repair it. If they can it gets repaired and returned to you. If they can't repair it then they send you a replacement. This process can take anywhere from a week (if you are lucky) but average turn around time in my experience is 2 to 3 weeks.
The regular 32gb HTC One for AT&T is going for about $630 on eBay new. Prob more than u would get for a crappy boring iphone

As the title stated I have a Note 3 that I "can" donate to Adam. Please in response to this thread do NOT make mention of $ donations, pay-pal, or your favorite pets piggy bank. Kush of any kind, side shooters and hashish are also not to be mentioned. With that being said I would like to donate (for a good cause) my Verizon Galaxy Note 3 to Outler. Also this phone is my daily driver but I have a galaxy note 2 that I could be using if it were no longer broken. It needs the complete screen assembly. So if someone happened to have extra parts laying around or knew of extremely cheap parts for sale, I could fix my note 2 and ship out my note 3 to a cool guy that does cool stuff with hardware on awesome phones. I live in the Dallas area.
I re read the XDA rules and this post does not appear to violate any of them, but I also understand that interpretation is 93% of any rule/law. I am however not asking for donations for any reason and I am NOT asking for money at all. Thank you and good day.

Not sure what's wrong with your note 2, but if its the digitizer sensor board ~$14
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Digitiz...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item3cd73f961d
or the lens ~$13

If its the LCD, then those are running like $140+
From your post sounds like all 3, but figured i'd drop those for reference.

While I do thank you for the kindness and gesture, I am able to get in touch with him. I may have to wait a week or two until I can get parts for my note 2, but the moment my note 2 is operational I will FedEx the Note 3 overnight to him. The note 3 was free to me so I'm not at a loss in re-gifting it. I will upgrade my other line in due time to another 3 when and if the boot loader is unlocked or a custom recovery/kernel is flashable.
Like I said before, if you have a Note 2 laying around or parts to fix mine, I am not against paying for the parts but I don't have much money..... (3 kids @ Baylor are keeping me at the poverty line) literally.

I don't think I have posted that before...
I think people should start considering their intentions before purchasing a model, if they want unlocked they need to support the dev versions. It is showing the carriers which products are wanted. If they see a larger number of dev units on their network, they are more likely to give them greater support.

Some people can't pay the 700 and something deductible. And the only way they probable could is buy the note 3 and keep it in the box then to and it on swappa. Then wait until it to get sold, then purchase it from sammy. And 9/10 times it's out of stock.

I totally agree with this; however, I was in the situation where I purchased the retail version before I knew there was going to be a dev version. Unfortunately I was too sick of my older slower phone and I purchased the Note 3 right away. Maybe someone mentioned the dev phone prior to the release or maybe that's a trend, but I unfortunately did not read it or did not know to expect it. From now on I will not buy a device unless it is a dev model. That doesn't help my current situation, so I thank anyone spending time on solving this one. I know it might not ever be solved, but efforts towards that end are appreciated. Thank you @drag&fly for being willing to contribute to the cause.

Carriers? Besides Play Edition devices, the only carrier offering development devices is Verizon, and even then, they don't offer them. Motorola and Samsung are attempting to band-aid our market share they don't want to lose to another manufacturer like HTC or Sony. With the exception of AT&T and VZW, everyone else has the freedom to do as they please. I strongly disagree, as a couple thousand developer devices vs. millions of retail devices, they don't care one bit. This whole 'Dev Device' business model is Samsung's attempt at a band-aid Verizon's position on device modification. They should start differentiating corporate devices vs. consumer devices. Verizon caters heavily to the enterprise market, especially government organizations and large corporations, so the need for enterprise security created the bastard child known as Samsung Knox and LG Gate. RIM's fall from it's Blackberry throne really stung. Samsung wanted a piece of the pie. If we want to do something about it, switch carriers, not devices. Leave Verizon and AT&T en masse. I mean Verizon charges for 2GB of data instead of unlimited (was same price for me) because they insist this is what consumers wanted. What a joke. T-Mobile now offers international data for free off your data plan, in addition to acquiring the lower 700Mhz block, which will only help them even more with greater signal penetration (something they were struggling with outside of urban/suburban environments.) It's also not very realistic for people in the United States to adopt to the lower tariff/higher device cost model like Europe has. They've engrained subsidization deeply into the mobile industry, although some are starting to shake loose. Motorola is helping quite a bit. It's a complex issue, but truly Verizon is the enemy, and we should all abandon ship. Oh, and AT&T sucks too.

As @AdamOutler once said
Why not just buy a developer edition?
GTFO! Not a single person got started developing by buying a developer phone. They started developing because they were unhappy with the features of their device and wanted something better. They wanted something more. This developer phone is a tax on developer innovation. We do not stand for that. We will break the security and we will enable XDA-Developers to do what they do best.
Until security is broken and available for everyone, this device will get updates last, users will be unhappy because there are no additional features and Samsung violates the spirit of Open Source and copyright laws. Personally I think carrier should let customers choose between Regular phone or Dev phone and if you choose dev phone and brick it, then its your responsibility.
Hey, Im kinda new to Galaxy devices and i was wondering, how does this usually go based on what has happened in the past for Galaxy Devices, because coming from a Nexus (I know why would i ever leave a nexus) i really didn't think anything of the OTA update because on a Nexus, it really doesn't matter if you update or not, but will there ever be some sort of Downgrade from the NC5 Kitkat update? Will i ever be able to get Root? or will i be stuck with this so called safe strap which makes no sense to me. Im sorry im seeming like a noob, but all this extra stuff to aquire root is new to me. Do i wait for some sorta exploit? Do I try a Downgrade method? or could i possibly return my device for another one? Cuz its brand-new and its not rooted at all and it has warranty... What are my options because i'm totally lost admist the millions of posts. All i need is root and ability to get rid of these bloatware apps (and twrp would be nice, but i'm fine with stock rooted & xposed)
Device:
VZW Galaxy S4 SCH-i545 16Gb

It is possible to do a partial downgrade, root, and return to Kitkat with root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726868
If you're really fine with TouchWiz then that may be all you want.
Personally, I'd return it though. If you ever want AOSP or updates before Verizon decides to release them, you'll need a different phone. You can get an MDK (pretty much unlocked, loki exploit) or Developer Edition (unlocked) S4 on Swappa for $300-$335.

Well i bought my phone under contract and i'm kinda stuck with it in their system. Do you think verizon would replace it with a brand-new replacement with MDK bootloader on it? Because when i originally got the device a few weeks ago, it unfortunately had MDK bootloader on it, but i was stupid and i updated. I have no money to replace it so i don't know what i could do. If i did sell the one thats setup thru my contract, wouldn't that give it a bad esn? Also, i am fine with touchwiz as long as i can have xposed and root to change what i don't like, and if i really wanted to install a custom rom, i can use my N7 for that. The biggest problem i probably would have though is waiting for verizon updates. Because i know that sucks

If you just bought it, I think you have 14 days to return and cancel the contract. I don't think the Verizon S4 is worth a 2 year contract at all - if you're content with a locked one, you can easily get one for around $250 (e.g. this one that just sold) in good/great condition.
You could get an S5 for $99, sell it on Swappa for $500 - $10 Swappa Fee, -$15 Paypal Fee, -$15 Shipping.
So 500 in, 140 out. About $360 net profit. (Note this is just an estimate.)
Then buy a locked S4 on Swappa for $250 and still have over $100 profit. Or an MDK/Dev one and a bit less profit.
Do note that you have to be careful about where you buy a contract phone, many places will sneak in their own secondary contract with its own ETF if you change anything within x months. Bestbuy doesn't have any nonsense like that. Verizon directly also doesn't, of course.
However, that does take a bit of effort so it's definitely not as simple as just buying at Verizon. Swappa is pretty nice about making buying and selling safely easy though.

No, many people buy under contract and then sell when new phones are released (e.g. S5, M8) if they're happy with their current phone and just want to make a bit of money off the contract for service they'd use anyways. The phone would only become bad ESN if you reported it lost/stolen. (Also maybe if you later defaulted on the contract, but I'm not sure on that.)

Are you sure it was MDK? More likely to be MI1 or MK2. I suppose it would be possible, but probably very unlikely.

Thanks to Surge1223 and k1mu, you can have root even on the newest OTA (so far). Verizon updates do suck though - it looks pretty clear that they held back the S4's kitkat update for a long time just so that they could advertise the S5 as having newer software.

Problem Solved. (at least for me anyway) i was able to trade in my phone at verizon and i exchanged it for a HTC one M8... that i rooted within the first 2 hours of getting it.. lol. Anyway, if any Moderator or admin wants to delete this post, they can
Check out this thread on the GS5 section. This would be for any Verizon device. It's regarding interest in users paying a fee to have your bootloader unlocked and device rooted..

I think it's legit that he heard back from the exec vp's office once, but if anything comes out of fruition from this is yet to be seen.
What about those who pay full retail. They want even more money to allow unlock?

Wouldn't make sense since they sell Dev editions for the same price full retail, probably only applies to subsidized phones
