eBook reader app - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Themes and Apps

I have a very large reading library (18k) of publications most in epub format that I converted using calibre. I've tried Mantano, Aldiko, cool reader, and moon reader. I store my books on dropbox.
Moon reader crashes when trying to access such a large library. Aldiko tries to move all of my books to my unit. I've not messed around with Cool reader or Moon reader much yet.
What I'm looking for is a reader that I can use to do a search of the meta data without loading all of my books onto my note. I'm open to work around too.

I also use Calibre and have a large collection. I was playing around with Giogle Play Books. From my PC I was able to upload some of my ebooks (mind you, I was only playing around and didn't upload them all). Once uploaded, they showed up on my phone and tablet.

You can upload your calibre library on say Dropbox and then access it with moon reader or fbreader.

Can you search the metatarsal of the books stored on dropbox?

Nope, v2.6.4 MoonReader and I can only search the titles

You'll be amazed by SideBooks
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.tokyo_ip.SideBooks

Moon Reader + Calibre Server.
Can browse or search by; Newest, Title, Author, Language, Publisher, Rating, Series and Tags.
Does everything I need and no problems accessing a very large collection.

Did you try ezpdf?

Google Books ?
I don't have a huge collection like you but I upload all my .EPUBs and .PDFs to Google Books and they sync to all my devices fine.

Given the better integration that's finally taken place between Drive/Books, I think it would be compelling to make a copy of your library in Google Drive and use Play Books as your reader. That's what I do, but I haven't done extensive searching yet. What I will say is that it's pretty seamless to load anything from my library, from PC or Drive mobile, it looks absolutely beautiful, Drive and Google Play books are searchable from Google Now, which means you have access to any notation/quote Google does. Drive has come so far and integrates with reading now so well I ended up leaving Dropbox, it just makes more sense for an Android user.

i loved using drive, and even kindle, as an ebook reader. the only thing i didn't like is the lack of customization. if i can't have a black background with red text then i can't use the reader. i read mostly at night and don't like the harsh lights (i keep my brightness less than zero with lux).
my main reader has been moon but i use calibre companion also.

E-readers - Aldiko or Laputa?

I've seen both these on the market and they both look good. However I've seen a lot of free titles for Laputa on the market too. Am I right in thinking that Aldiko can read any 3rd party e-pub books, whilst Laputa can only read its own files?
Most public ebooks are classics.. however Laputa seems to have some modern titles. If I were to use Aldiko, would I be able to open Laputa files?
Cheers in adv.
Haven't tried Laputa (am downloading it now), but do own Aldiko Premium.
Aldiko does indeed read any non-DRM .epub file you throw into it's import filter. If you use Calibre e-Book Management (free) on your PC, you can convert nearly any format (including test, rich text, and pdf) to .epub.
Have you tried FBReader (free in the market)? It can also read any non DRM .epub books.
+1 for Calibre for creating .epub's.

Laputa Reader can also read .epub fileformat!
I've tried both Laputa Reader and Aldiko Reader, and I think that Laputa is the best choice!
Laputa Reader is also more updated with new features, improvements etc., than Aldiko Reader.
Read more about the two Reader apps on their websites:
Laputa Reader: laputareader.com
Aldiko Reader: aldiko.com
(Check the 'Features' page, too!)
laputa
i cant find laputa on android market? how can i get it?
i think moon+ reader is perfect.
I've been using Aldiko for a while...no problems so far
personally prefer Coolreader(even has a pc version)..
All the ones mentioned here failed in some way to read some formats or one specific book...but Coolreader never did nor does as yet... And it's FREE
Fan of Aldiko personally.... Integrates extremely well with Calibre also..
Aldiko Permium and Moon Reader Pro are the best ebook reader for android. Try any one of your choice. I like aldiko to read while i use moon reader to download ebooks cause it has many free ebooks catalogs included....

Media server that also serves ebooks?

Only saw one thread on ps3? Server. How are people serving content to their nook? Any good apps that also support ebooks/pdfs, streaming video?

It's early days for the android version of PLEX, which has been out for iOS things for a while .. it should do the job but documentation is very thin for android right now ...
The nice thing about ebooks is you don't really need to stream them because of the files size. I just use Opera Unite to access my home file server with all my ebooks.
unite.opera.com/overview/
For music, im currently using subsonic which seems to be working pretty good, but I probably wont end up purchasing the license.
UPnPlay + Rockplayer in NC and PS3 media server in desktop - combo works great for music and video streaming. I haven't tried ebooks yet.
While e books don't really need "serving" due to size I for instance have the entire Project Gutenberg library and sorting though it to see what I want to read on the NC can be a hassle. To that end I use calibre server installed on my hp475 Home Server to push out any book and the stock WHS for any song/movie/image/sw/apk/etc. via browser on WAN and es file manager or mount mgr/CIFS on home LAN. If you don't have a home server then calibre will run from any workstation and you can use ddns for WAN access.
Like aklyz, I use Calibre. Handles my entire library, allows me to find cover art easily and can be set up as a catalog in Aldiko.
It can do a lot more than that, but it only does ebooks.
check out AudioGalaxy for music.
i just got it yesterday and it is AWESOME, if you are trying to stream your music from your computer. used it on my droid eris at the gym today. all my music (30+ gb) no space required on droid. and its FREE!!!
I set up VLC convert and stream last night and it works great for music/video. Nice thing is that it will transcode all of your video to h.264 so that it works on the Nook, no need to convert the video. Most other servers need you to convert the video to an NC compatible format. It worked with every video I tried: mpg, avi, wmv. It also allows you to use the Nook as a remote for your computer, which is pretty sweet. The free version will transcode up to 480 width - pro version allows 640 width and picture support as well. I may end up purchasing it as it's nice not to have to copy anything to the NC. If I can get it to support recorded TV shows from media center, it'll be perfect (I think it will, just need to change the extension).

Yeah Cailbre is awesome. I like how it auto finds covers if you put in the ISBN
eBook server access
Hi,
Calibre (open source) (http: // calibre - ebook . com) is great for organizing
the eBooks on PC end, getting covers, reviews, tagging them etc.
You can download and manage eBooks on the device mounted as a drive
directly from Calibre, or upload them to Dropbox for later download on the device.
There is also a paid app on the Android end "Calibre Library" that works with
Calibre to pull books to the Android device. Still under development, but very
usable. It can search library, sort by author, title etc.

I setup my calibre library folder as folder within Dropbox. Every book I have is now easily accessible from all of my devices. My calibre library is only about 500 megs ...

[Q] A Book Organizer?

is there any app that shows me my books organized by its metadata (in shelves would be great) and that allows to use 3rd party readers?
for example, i like aldiko look, and i like it for epubs, but i dont like its pdf reader
i'd love to be able to lauch repligo for pdf
basically, what i need is a ebook organizer app, not a ebook reader app
I haven't found anything that runs on android. I use Calibre on my PC and then load what I want on each device from there. I have used aldiko also, and just started using fbreader... I really like the way fbreader works.
I use Calibre e-Book Manager
Sorry not enough posts to do a link but Google is your friend here.
Sadly, I haven't found anything like this either (and I'd love to launch my Cisco Press books in ezpdf). Best workaround I've found is putting (astro) shortcuts to the books on the launcher via Desktop VisualizeR, and letting the default "open with" bindings for PDF take control. If you do find something, please update the thread; you're definitely not the only one who wants this functionality!
The stock reader lets you create shelves, but it doesn't do it automatically for you unfortunately. Calibre lets you edit your metadata on your computer. Not really what you're looking for though.

[Q] ebook reader?

Hello, I'm searching for an app, who will put my PDF books like they are real ebooks.
Basically i'm looking for kindle like app but for my own collection ebooks not the books from some store. I know there is PDF reader but it just isn't the same feeling .
atm theres nothing to turn your pdf's into an ebook equivalent, why you have to do is install calibre onto you computer, then use that to convert the .pdf file into a .epub file, after that then you can install aldiko onto your device, and open the epubs and book, just like a book reader
hope this helps
i'm using amazon kindle read prc file
try ezPDF reader its really good and has what you need

I like EBookDroid very much. Mainly because I can invert colors with it.

zinio or what else to have books and pdf docs in the samereader library

I'm trying to find a reader able to manage magazines (like Zinio), e-books and pdf docs stored on the Sony tablet s sd card ("sdcar" and also "sdcard2". Is this really impossible? Until now, no solution... I bought various magazines using zinio but I'd like to have a library with al kinds of docs/magazines... in the same app...
