I'm with Verizon and looking to get a new phone with a unlocked bootloader . I am currently on s4 using safestrap. Any suggestions would be appreciated
If you want an unlocked boot loader, don't use Verizon...
Hmm, buy from Google play store?

You have a few decent choices. Mine was stock rooted with a few Xposed mods. Worked flawlessly.

Very nice.
djrbliss, would this enable the flashing of a patched aboot? That way it achieves a similar setup like with the Verizon S3.
this just seemed obvious. http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=483
are we ever gonna get an unlocked bootloader? I'm seriously considering just getting a new phone, its been almost two years :x Thanks!

Most likely gonna switch to AT&T or T-Mobile and get an S5 or maybe even an LG G2. I saw an LG G2 last night and it honestly blew me away, S4 was fun while it lasted

Yeah i understand the frustration with the locked boot loader.. No Aosp Roms is fine with me but no kernels sucks .. I should have researched a little more before buying this phone but i only paid $185 for it two months ago so its not a big deal . I can still sell for a profit it i decide to get a different phone...Might check out the g2 but will probably end up with GS5
I'm beginning to lose hope that the bootloader is going to be unlocked. Not because the devs here aren't fantastic - they are undoubtedly incredible. But based on my prior experiences with locked phones, this one seems to be unusually challenging. So what do folks think the odds are at this point?
PS: Forgive me if this belongs in another thread but I figured it's less about the process or the bounty and more about likelihood....

lol for real though, I may be going to the HTC One, if the boot loader isn't unlocked in a couple months.
I would prefer a One Max IF you can unlock the bootloader on HTC's site.
I'm already trying to trade my S4 for a Note 2. Little patience I have. Which leads me to my next question... Does anybody know if the Note 2 is a nightmare or have the Dev's got that one figured out?

I owned one before the s4. No problems unlocking bootloader etc on the note 2. Everything was pretty stable as well as far as aosp roms.

Maybe I'm just a noob but how would that work?
I think it is going to be the only solution going forward. I don't see any of the manufacturers or providers easing back on locking down these devices. If anything they will get tighter.

I am not totally sure, but I felt the CM team was indicating something in the way Google was implementing security and the code that really allows things to be done without the intrusion of root. I am not a developer and likely never would acquire the skills to be more than a guinea pig for them (don't mind) and I learned a lot from folks here especially with my HTC One DE which was a rockin device. I just wished AT&T service was better in my area and I could live with it. Some day I will likely try them again but I just can't do it right now. The big reason I did was to get unlocked phones, but given the sheer lack of LTE for US on the international phones its clear the OEM's are NOT making global phones on LTE today. It could be 10 years before we truly see global LTE phones.
Personalty, It's not about CM to me, I wasn't full access to my phone, if I have HTC I was S-OFF, if this phone I was the boot loader unlock.
Things take time and money, check the bounty, who knows for all I know they have a boot loader unlock and are waiting for it to hit $10G or some other number.
It's hard to say really. But I hope that Verizon still allows their HTC phone to at least get HTC -Dev unlock to allow custom recovery and ROM-Ming, and as for Samsung, if a Dev. edition is the only option, I will buy the phone for at Verizon (whatever one I can sell for the most on Swappa), sell it, make about enough money to buy the Dev. edition at only $200 after selling the device.
Just some ranting, sorry.
After all this me7 crap I'm wondering if the developer edition is unlocked? Boot loader I mean. I guess I'm just wondering what's so special about it?

I bought the DEV version because I was in the market for a new S4, and I wanted to keep my unlimited data. Furthermore I didn't want to risk buying the consumer edition from Verizon, because I didn't want to receive a device with ME7 firmware. The cost of the DEV version was the same as the consumer version, except it's unlocked. So it's a no-brainer for me.
I guess I was just plain stupid. I came from the galaxy s3 and I just assumed that all phones were as easy. I won't make that mistake twice! I don't have much faith in the bootloader getting exploited so I think I will buy the DEV and sell the other on Ebay.

The thing people often forget is an insecure boot loader was leaked. The stock firmware released boot loader was never cracked for the S3. This same method worked on the Note 2.

Hi All,
I'm a little new here but I've done a lot of searching and haven't been able to find anything recent on this topic. From what I can see there has been no progress unlocking the bootloader to flash custom Roms on the i545vruame7 s4 in a few months. I just got my S4 yesterday and when I received it, it already had i545vruame7 installed. I am able to gain root access but not unlock the bootloader to flash any custom roms. Have I missed something? Is there any way to flash back to the old version?
Thanks,
Peter

Welcome to the S4! So long as you are not on mj7 firmware you can still install Safestrap which allows you to run touchwiz based ROMs. Just search for it in development. If I'm not mistaken, it works with the Google Play Edition ROM too, so you can have a little bit of AOSP goodness.
Just to be curious, where did you get your phone from?

Thanks for the info! I've been thinking about getting involved in the development side, I develop android apps but have never touched anything as far as Roms and bootloaders. I just want it working so I can install CM on my phone so I figured it might be worth a shot.
I installed Safestrap and then stupidly tried to flash a rom slot with CM 10.1 which didn't work. Is there a list available anywhere of touchwiz based ROMs?

Makes sense, I used titanium to freeze the SDM app so I'm hoping that will stop it from auto updating, along with a whole bunch of other crapware.

The S5 is even more pointless if you ask me. It's going to come even more locked down than these s4's
Sure people will work hard at finding exploits but its not going to be any easier. Its getting to the point where more an more people will jump ship over to Sprint where you can still unlock the bootloaders.
So what if Knox gets mad and keeps telling you in tiny yellow and red letters during each reboot.

That's a joke right sprint?
People will jump to Tmobile. Unlockable and actually decent and fast service.
Granted the S5 (on vzw and att) will come more locked than the S4 but people (dan rosenberg or someone else) will initially come onboard and find a 2nd init or kexec method. Also vz has the most coverage around the US.
